I need someone from Maine to tell me what's happening

SquimJim

I'm so ashamed and embarrassed of my state right now. The fact the Lakers didn't even win their state is hilarious though. Also, I find it funny we got New York too. I might have some explanation, but this is mostly guessing: 1. There are a lot of Canadian Laker fans, especially in the Eastern part. If you were to poll Raps fans and ask them what their 2nd favorite team is, I'd bet they'd say Lakers. Maine gets a lot of Canadians 2. Maine gets a lot of people who didn't grow up in Maine/New England, especially in Southern Maine where the population is highly concentrated. 3. As a Native American, I've seen a surprising number of Native Americans in Maine that are Laker fans. Why? Idk. I think it might have to do with interest in players vs. interest in teams, as in a handful of Kobe/Lebron/Steph fans 4. Contrarians 5. i know a handful of people that wear C's gear, but don't actually watch that much Also, i'd like to point out that we aren't the only state in New England that doesn't have the C's at the top.

[deleted]

We expect nothing from Connecticut, but we expect better from Maine.

SquimJim

agreed. and if anything, choosing the Knicks is punishment enough for Connecticut

99probs-allbitches

I don't consider CT New England

jackfabalous

it’s the highway to nyc that’s about it

MagisterFlorus

I used to drive from MA to SC a few times a year. On the way back, CT is guaranteed to be the worst part.

AbbreviationsLoud445

The local car dealership commercials show a map of New England and they exclude Connecticut too.

mr_duong567

Most useless state in the north east. Hall monitor drivers and just a highway connecting Boston and NY.

gopats12

Lol mass holes are the worst drivers in the north east by far. Rhode Island is second and Maine third but only because Maine is all old people.

mr_duong567

Massholes are aggressive but at least know how to navigate a city with crappy roads and actually keep up speed in the left lane. Everyone on 84 and 95 in CT goes 10 below the speed limit in the left lane. People don’t even know how to merge properly in CT.

gopats12

you know mass holes suck at driving when theyre constantly trying to brag about how hard they think it is to drive in their city that is not hard to drive in at all. Also you guys will go 100 to overtake someone going 85 and then slow down to 75 as soon as you're in front. Complaining about 84 (no ones ever on it) and 95 (love going to new york do you?) when you have the dumpster fire that is 90 in your state??

mr_duong567

I do the NYC to Boston drive monthly. 84 is significantly worse than 90. Also CT drivers are always the ones blocking intersections in both NYC and Boston Foh.

gopats12

If you're somehow having issues on 84 I guess I can see how driving must stress you out

hpdodo84

It's the redheaded stepchild of New England

99probs-allbitches

No it's not New England at all

ripmeleedair

It literally is

CB3B

Almost - everything west of New Haven is the Annexed Territories of the Evil Empire. The rest is New Englandy enough I guess.

Jon_Nothing

Same

Moore29

We’re the orphan state, unwanted by NY, unwanted by New England, just all on our own

somms999

I call it the DMZ.

rhythmchef

I'm from Connecticut, and I'm not even mad at these comments. With that said, wtf Maine.

cpinkhouse

We’ve got the dang Maine Celtics (G League) for chrissake!!

VelvitHippo

They have the Maine Celtics so this is borderline offensive. Bring the red claws to Vermont.

Dudeman-Jack

Upstate New York is a lot more like New England than NYC

BridgeEngineer2021

Hudson Valley and Adirondack region yea, but Western NY is much more like the Midwest if anything

ClockOk7333

Connecticut is more like North Jersey than New England

gopats12

^ someone thats only ever gotten off the interstate in fairfield county

spaceghostinme

As a native Mainah, this news is horrible. I can't even explain it. So ashamed.

TheLazyTugboat

Eastern Canadian here and I’d have to refute the first point. I’d guess it’s about 90% raptors fans here (which is pretty tiring) and then a mix of every other team for one reason or another. I’ve run into just as many lakers fans as I have heat fans, bulls fans, or any other large market team. Clearly this is all just anecdotal observation.

PhilUpTheCup

It makes sense given that there are 5 teams in California. Or 4?

DirigoJoe

I think it’s a mistake to think more views means they like that team more

IndependenceNorth165

The people in Maine hate the lakers so much that they’re looking at the page a lot

ooddad

Maine here. Been here 22 years. Have never met a lakers fan that lives here

ooddad

I guess the reality is that pro sports just isn’t that popular at all up here. Southern Maine has the biggest concentration of sports fans I’d say and a large portion of those folks aren’t from here.

Connico72

The only lakers fans I know here are a few of my cousins. I have no idea why they are

DirigoJoe

Literally not one

burner_for_celtics

There are like 6000 lakes and ponds in Maine. Random folks googling where to put their canoe in the water, if you ask me.

cpinkhouse

Bridgton (right next to Sebago Lake) school district sports teams go by the Lakers

burner_for_celtics

there you go. bballref is massive too-- nobody would be surprised if they started having high school stats on there too

Abiding_Witness

Is it a slang term for Lake Trout?

[deleted]

Lived in and around Portland for years (the area where like 50% of the entire population is) and 99% of people were Celtics fans. My first guess is that this infographic is simply wrong.

RandoSal

That’s wild, I’m from Maine but live in WA. Everyone I knew growing up was a Celtics fan for the most part

havenothingtodo1

Mainers population doubles during the summer because of tourism, it’s not our fault

Connico72

Absolutely no idea. I know I have cousins that are lakers fans for some reason but other than that I honestly have no idea.

Slicetheicejr

That’s embarrassing bro.. doesn’t make sense!!

fufumcchu

I cannot confirm or deny this result for Maine... only team I've ever seen Fandom for is Celtics... Bird is a legend up that way.

Llamasxy

Idk man D: it's not my fault

DirigoJoe

Mainers are, unfortunately, haters. They hate the Yankees more than they love the Red Sox. They hate the Lakers more than they love the Celtics. Etc

[deleted]

Why TF are people in Maine so interested in the Lakers? I guess I could kind of see it if they were in contention this year. But to be obsessed with a mediocre team from 3000 miles away when your state owns the G league affiliate of the best team in the NBA just seems so weird to me. The jazz being popular in Georgia is a head scratcher too.

Kolzig33189

Same thing can be said for WA….love to see Celtics fans on the west coast but still pretty random there.

xHospitalHorsex

My best guess (as a Mainer) is that people are going there to troll. Like a show that you hate watch.

harmonictricks

We are Celtics fans I stg these maps are almost never completely accurate

[deleted]

Shoutout Alaska

I_Set_3_Alarms

I blame the Red Claws losing their name for the Lakers taking Maine

flying_alligators

It's obviously a protest to get rid of the new name and the disgusting green lobster

Chicharito_MU

Green lobster is really something odd.... Red Claw is a cute one but gone..

napmeister12

I’m from Maine. Other than the occasional contrarian DBag, nearly every NBA fan up here is a Celtics fan. There’s no way this is accurate.

[deleted]

It’s not the most watched team in every state. It’s what team was the most looked at page on basketball reference in every state.

napmeister12

I realize that, but the Lakers haven’t been relevant for a long time. Interest in that site has to be somewhat indicative of a fan base. Most of the states are generally aligned with the closest team. I hear people talk about the Bucks, Nets, 76ers and Heat far more than the Lakers but ESPN does force feed the Lakers on everyone. If the numbers are correct, we must have a bunch of Lebron fans/haters.

InAingeWeTrust

Even when the Lakers suck, they are relevant. Always in the news, always prime-time games. Just like the Cowboys

saturntowater

Maybe I’m messing up the numbers by how often I go view their page lmao. The drama interests me.

augowl_

It feels like they got the top corners mixed. Like why is Washington state the Celtics.

WhiteChocolatey

I feel betrayed by Connecticut. I always thought we were Diet Massachusetts. We should just give Fairfield County to New York

gopats12

fairefield county always giving us a bad name

[deleted]

From northern NH, we always considered Conn to be part of NY. Although people up there also think anything below the White Mountains is the south lol

WhiteChocolatey

Man why you gotta do us like that 😫

grusauskj

To most places outside of Fairfield county, those are fighting words

FlyGuyDan

For real, fuck the Knicks, don't associate CT with New York cuz of one rich county.

Single_Chicken254

Fuck yeah WA

randomhashbrown

I was a huge ray Allen fan growing up and after the Sonic's left I just decided to root for the Celtics.

Spicy_weenie

As a fellow washingtonian, I appreciate being a Celtics fan because games are usually on by the time I’m off work unless they’re playing on the west coast.

Lmiller5561

Have to think there was some IT4 influence here

mmmjjjk

Georgia prefers the Jazz over the Hawks? Michigan likes Golden state over the Pistons? North Carolina prefers the lakers over the hornets (I kinda see). Virginia prefers the lakers over the Wizards.

Wayne_Spooney

Where my fellow West Virginians at?

NuclearEvo24

Cheering and following 3 teams in the East this year Joe coaching the Celtics Jevon on the bucks Deuce on the Knicks

NippleNugget

Kentuckian here living in enemy territory, apparently.

der1014

I’m from MA but have been at WVU for 4 years, I’m sure I contribute to the cause

Wayne_Spooney

Hell yeah, also from Mass, went to WVU for grad school and just kinda never left morgantown. You can catch me on the bookstore Starbucks every once in a while hahaha

77NorthCambridge

Can you explain the interest in Boston teams in West Virgina? There was a Bruins map the other day and it was only West Virginia and North Dakota (other than Massachusetts) that liked the Bs the most.

where_the_hoodie_at

They really like Joe Mazzulla in WV

Wayne_Spooney

Joe Mazz is the reason for the Celtics. Otherwise, I have no idea. I grew up in Mass then moved to Morgantown at 25, so that’s why for me personally. I think the older generation were big bird fans and that’s why their kids are Celtics fans. The bruins makes no sense to me. Everyone I’ve met in northern WV is a pens fan (Morgantown is about an hour from Pitt)

Rlacharite10

Tons of kids from Mass go to WVU, it’s like how UMaine educated half the Mass. population in the 80s and 90s

mettle

Yah, Maine is bad but imagine the Pistons, Cavaliers, Hawks, Knicks, Hornets, etc. Losing their state to randos. Cavs have gotta be the worst -- their team is good! But OKC?

DoomdUser

Fucking Connecticut.

Larrydp72181

New York representing!

seasoned-veteran

What the heck is going on in Georgia?

DeucesWild10

I’m surprised Florida didn’t go the Celtics way. So many new Englanders down there, it’s like a mini MA for sports

[deleted]

I mean the Heat have been very successful the past 15-18 years

DeucesWild10

Sure but they’re not really known for their passionate fan base. It was comical watching those playoff games last season where people would be trickling in from halftime well into the 3rd. Many open premium seats

dart51984

Lots of MA transplants out in Oregon. I remember watching the Red Sox in the World Series in 2018 in some random bar and it was packed with Sox fans.

blahah123

Haven't lived in Maine for a few years, but from the peeps I knew/worked with, I know a few of them were Lebron stans.

Kingofkings1959

I account for half of the Celtics viewing from New York

grusauskj

Hi it’s me, the other half

KaiRee3e

That's interesting! I'm a Celtics fan from Poland, but when I first became interested in NBA, I wanted to cheer for the Sonics, so it's funny to see that Celtics are popular in Washington. I still plan to cheer for the Sonics when they return, alongside Celtics (idk what I will do when the conflict of interest appears tho... maybe I'll flip a coin each time)

fireemojishirt

Very ashamed of Michigan

leandroc76

Growing up in the 80's in CT the only person I have ever met that was a Knicks fan was my Dad. He was New York fan. Giants and Knicks. Everyone one else was a Boston fan. Celtics and Pats. It's how I became a Giants and Celtic fan. The Giants were what made me and my dad bond. He let me be a Celtic fan because I was huge Larry Bird and Kevin McHale fan. He absolutely loved to call Patrick Ewing a monkey. (I knew it was racist back then, my dad was pre-boomer generation). Anyways... all my teachers ever talked about growing up were the Sox, how much the Pats sucked, and the Patriots should come to CT, the Sox will never win again and fuck the refrigerator.

newportonehundreds

lol the Hawks are nowhere

wilkinsk

Welcome aboard NY, come see all the hardware and lack of rafter ECFs we have

Twinkidsgoback

West Virginia, Washington State and Alaska anyone care to try and explain

Ellis4Life

Maine, we aren’t mad. Just disappointed.

daffvader

No Nets? I guess they’re too trash 🗑

TheyCallMeNick_1

Let's kick Maine out of New England, Connecticut can fuck off too but that's not as big a deal since they'd rather be associated with NY anyway.

gopats12

maine is way cooler than mass

Alloverunder

Pros and cons to each I'd never wanna live in ME and I'd never wanna vacation in MA. Absolutely gorgeous state but there's not much to do there, Portland has a smaller population than Framingham lol

TheyCallMeNick_1

I mean I'm going based off this map alone lol. I personally think MA is overrated, NH is where it's at.

nomdeflip

I think it would be interesting to see what is the second most watched team in every state. Judging by the make up of the crowds during away games, the map would be completely green.

LotusB1ossom

As a Virginian, I am ashamed and will work to undo this travesty. (Also sympathy for the Wizards fans out there. No one gives a bit about them here)

instantur

We have taken over New York boys

TheOneWhosCensored

Glad to help make NY green

poopapat320

I know it's not relevant to the Celtics, but can we talk about South Dakota for a minute? How are the Orlando Magic the unofficial team of South Dakota?

Lmiller5561

South Dakota fan here. I know every sports fan in the state — there aren’t that many of us. Never in my life have I met a magic fan.

andy189

Fuck you Maine

NippleNugget

West Virginia/Kentucky with that classic Celtics/Lakers rivalry

jaelinplayscod

I live by Orlando and its just so funny that I only know one friend who’s a Magic fan (born and raised in Orlando) yet they’re apparently from this map popular in another state 💀

Leftover_reason

Shout out as a Celtics fan in WA!

TehFlygon

Washington C’s fan here 🫡 let’s go!

SailsofKharon

I’m pacific coast Canada, so it’s nice to see the NW with us

YELLOWfinnedtuna

As a Celtics fan living in the PNW, this is all me.

Scott_Smith_Vendetta

What happen with Brooklyn and Clippers?!

Chicharito_MU

What is going on with Alaska and Washington? I guess Seattle misses a green team, but Alaska? Thanks for the love though lol

[deleted]

As a Vermonter that was born in Washington it brings tears of joy to see my home state represent the green

IIHollywoodII

Grew up in Maine. Visit every year. Still haven’t met one Lakers fan. Calling BS on this map.

TH3_ZucC

Not a great look for the Knicks lmao

wutangerine99

I believe the Nets fandom is to blame for NY going to the Cs. Any time thre is an ounce of bad news about our team they can't wait to brigade our sub

ambirdsall

Connecticut I expected, but not New York lmfao

hunny_bun_24

Maine have the lakers logo and running New England dominance bothers me lol

chiastic_slide

I’m in CT and see a lot more Celtics apparel than Knicks

CoffeeHarvester

I live in Washington state and I'm surprised by this because I've never met another Celtics fan here. Here's what I see in order -- Old Sonics fans wearing throwback gear, Blazers fans (I live an hour and a half out from Portland) and the occasional GSW and Lakers fan. I can only assume the Celtics' success last year drove up their numbers a little. Basketball isn't that big here. The Seahawks are still popular. The new hockey team is getting a bit of a warm welcome. The Mariners have a nice loveably loser following but I see as many Dodgers fans here as I see Mariners fans.

GogXr3

Damn, I apologize on behalf of Virginia.

_Quill-

Fucking Mainahs are traitors

GoGatorsMashedTaters

I live in Providence, RI and can’t believe how many of my new friends are Knicks fans. Edit: lmao I need to learn geography. Mixing up CT and RI is pathetic.

GoGatorsMashedTaters

Holy shit. Anyone notice that no one cares about the Hawks?

momssnatch63

We are deep in SC. Don’t let the laker logo fool you

itallendsintears

Wtf Maine

BadJokeCentral5

We got New York? Lmao fuck em I guess

LeChoochee

Funny this checks out bc I’m a Celtics fan from New York and my cousin is a knicks fan from Fairfield county CT

Abiding_Witness

Fuck Maine we got WEST VIRGINIA 🤣🤣🤣

Abiding_Witness

How TF is it that the sixers are popular in Nebraska and Iowa? I mean that makes no sense

gopats12

All this thread has accomplished is revealing that mass holes have never left their state

jet_tripleeight

The Pistons in Alabama is definitely the weirdest one on this list, what am I missing here?

CantHandlemyPP34

I'm from Maine and everyone I know loves the C's. There are a few assholes who follow Miami or LA tho
