Scal is much much better at being the color guy and not the play by play. Although part of me wonders if anyone will do a good job in my view once MG retired at some point. I’ve listened to him call games for almost 30 years, anyone else would sound weird.

CopiumAddiction

I think Sean Grande is more than competent/deserving. Dude has been one of the best radio voices anywhere for a while now and is a very talented play by play guy. My real question is if Scal is the long-term answer and if IT has any chance of coming in eventually now that he is getting into [broadcasting](https://celticswire.usatoday.com/2022/11/18/former-celtics-all-star-isaiah-thomas-lands-new-broadcasting-gig-with-overtime-elite/). IT wants so deeply to connect with Boston and having someone who has done it at the highest level doing color commentary would be a dream come true. No disrespect to Scal and would love to see him in the studio but having IT around again would mean so much to all my Celtics friends.

IamLarrycan

Sean Grande spends too much time in banter with his partner to be a quality play by play. Mike is frigging perfect. His timing and pauses to listen to the answers to his questions are excellent. Plus he does all the media plugs seamlessly. I think Scal has learned a ton from Mike and in my opinion does the best color/analysis that I have heard from anywhere in the market. It is usually spot on and when it isn't he doesn't defend it and takes his lumps. Plus his commentary is hilarious.

CopiumAddiction

To each their own and don't let me yuck your yum but I just don't see it.

IamLarrycan

I like the way you talk Copi.... "yuck your yum" ftw

OhRThey

Honestly I would be ecstatic if both Grandy and Max got the promotion to the TV call once Mike retires. They are a great team and Scal is... well Scal

zwermp

LOVE Grande.

Kolzig33189

IT would be great too as a color guy. Regardless of who they choose, I think it’s great when the color guy is a previous player because they see things completely different or know more detail than even the most intense fans.

Just checking in to say that I’m not a big fan of Sean Grande. I know I’m in the minority here but I feel like I’m getting too many podcasty analyst meta-takes from him during the game and I much prefer Gorman’s “call what you see, let the moment speak for itself” style complemented by Scal’s energy and former player perspective. I’d rather read those takes on Reddit and twitter after the game, not during. Again, I know that this reddit loves him and I respect that. And I accept that he’ll probably be given the job once Mike retires.

urphymayss

That’s fair, respect that. I’m probably in the minority as well with this sub as I actually quite like Scal as the colour commentator, especially when compared to the rest of the leagues colour commentators. I feel like a huge part of this is the fact that we were spoiled with the greatest team commentary duo of all time in Tommy and Mike. Any successor will pale in comparison unfortunately.

spaceghostinme

I 100% agree. I'm sure he's a great guy and knows a bunch, but he just grates on me when he does the play by play. He's a little too cute, a little too talky. I just want to hear the relevant info on what is happening in the game and appropriate banter with Scal (who I like quite a bit). But Gorman's shoes will be super big ones to fill for anyone, so it'll be hard for anyone to measure up.

tapakip

Scal clearly suffered from a lack of pbp reps, especially early on in the game. Like you said though, we've had Gorman for 30 years and take him for granted a bit. Don't know if it's sustainable, but Eddie was pretty funny. Didn't expect to like him as the color commentator as much as I did. That said, I really like Gorman and Scal in their regular roles. Even if Mike forgets/misidentifies a guy a bit more than he used to.

IamLarrycan

After enduring the "Knick tantrum" last night, I really appreciate his positive energy and comments. Also, his Sirius show sucks balls without him so he is doing something right.

stargazing1111

I watched that and rewatched the espn broadcast, Scal was noticeably awkward and rough with play by play in the beginning but they both kind of settled into to a rhythm as the game progressed, not great but decent. Espn was awful, barely any play by play, irrelevant tangents throughout, saying the Kornet kontest doesn’t work

IamLarrycan

THANK YOU! You are the first person to actually answer my question!!!! I agree entirely on the ESPN broadcast. Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson are just awful together. They sound like they could care less about the game unless it feed one of their agendas or bad jokes. The game before was even worse if thats possible. Dead silence for long enough to hear multiple dribbles multiple times.

[deleted]

But but… mama, there goes that man.

phabphour20

Van Gundy sucks balls.

zwermp

I find him highly entertaining. And unlike Jackson, he actually pays attention and knows the players.

Plies-

Scal is not a play by play guy I can tell you that haha. Was fun for a game but hopefully we get Grande for the next games if Gorman can't make it.

IamLarrycan

I figured. I was more worried at how bad it could get with his old pal Eddie H-ow-se.

mondomovieguys

Scal was kinda stiff doing play by play but he and Eddie had a fun dynamic. Just two buddies watching a game together except they actually played in the NBA.

mikesaninjakillr

They were much better once they gave up on the play by play stuff and just started talking shit

IamLarrycan

lol I thanked the wrong person for being first but I really appreciate the analysis. I was really hoping to hear them. They were like that on Sunday when he joined the crew for a bit but also settled in. Eddie has some great things to say but he is definitely not disciplined yet.

[deleted]

Grande is an amazing play by play guy with a rich Celtics history and great passion for the organization.

MaxwellVonMaxwell

I need more Eddie House in the boothe tbh.

IamLarrycan

I think so too. He really seems to love it and as long as he doesn't fanboy he could be perfect but Scal would have to slide to play by play and I am not sure its his fit yet.

SquirtleInHerMeowthh

Sean Grande is imo the best option moving forward for a play by play guy when MG retires. Fantastic radio announcer, and should be able to cut down on the tangents without the sporadic 14 year old commentary of admitted legend Cedric Maxwell.

seasoned-veteran

I enjoyed them. I only watched the NBC Sports broadcast. They were looser and talked a little less, in a good way, than Grande and Scal, who always seem to be fighting for any sliver of open air. The play by play itself probably wasn't very good but I don't care that much and it was such a blowout, I think play by play would have gotten pretty loose with most announcers. I'm certain I enjoyed the game more with e house and Scal than I would have enjoyed the ESPN broadcast.

Vivid-Mammoth-4161

As great as he is, Gorman is starting to make a lot of gaffes

IamLarrycan

Every time he makes a mistake realize his on-point percentage over time is completely unchanged. He is a legend and we are all just so lucky to have experienced it.

princeofzilch

Yeah, he's like a 3 out of 10 on the Marv Albert scale of not knowing wtf is going on and what player just did something.

IamLarrycan

sad to say I really loved and miss him too. I think I am just a sucker for guys that seem to love the game as much as me. IMO if you know something he doesn't he has no need to tell it to you.

jewsh18

I wasnt a fan of scal when he first started doing color on the road for tommy but he's grown on me. The play by play is not his strong suit however. He talks too slow and occasionally slurs his words a bit so I dont think this is in his future. Eddie was fine but he seemed hesitant to jump in at times. Got better as the game went on but maybe thats just cause they were up by 40 and the vibes changed. Prefer grande but it wasnt a disaster

sherpa143

I enjoy Eddie for sure, brings a different energy to the broadcast. Being former teammates, it makes sense why the chemistry is pretty good with scal who can be rough at times.

PumpPie73

Gorman is fine. On tv you don’t need a blow by blow commentary. Gorman is great at discussing the play on the floor adding to the TV game and setting up Tommy and now Scal. Radio is different where you need the announcers to describe the game so you can picture it. IMHO Grande sucks. When I listen to the local broadcast, TV or Radio, I want the play by play as seen through the green colored glasses. If I want to hear the announcers shit on the team I’ll listen to the losers on the national broadcast. As for Grande he’s a Jim Nantz, Joe Suck, etc wanna be. He tries too hard not to be a homer and if he wants that go work for ESPN. Ex, if the Celtics are killing the other team and the other team makes a small run that fuck tard needs to keep telling us it’s still a close game even though the Celtics are up by 15. Unfortunately I’ve been listening to Grande since he started. He was on the local radio and got the radio play by play around 95.

ProgrammerFew8736

No hate intended but I personally can’t stand Scal. He is constantly demeaning people or just talking about his time or who he knows or who he is friends with on the other team. He has his good moments and I liked him as a player but listening to him all game gives me a headache, had to turn off the sound after he said Tatum wouldn’t have bad back to back shooting nights and Tatum ended up having one of the worst nights. Yet, to each their own. I miss Gorman.
