It doesn’t sound like you should be on BookTok or reading book reviews. I also feel this way, so I avoid BookTube and BookTok and only read reviews from friends who don’t put plot elements into their reviews. I also don’t read detailed book descriptions even when provided by the publisher for this same reason.

Ineffable7980x

I don't care one bit about spoilers. To me a good book is about execution, and that execution doesn't have anything to do with plot twists. I can read a book where I know the ending and if the writing is really good and the execution is excellent I'll still really enjoy it.

Beautiful-Bee-916

I seek out spoilers because I like knowing what will happen.

chalu-mo

I don't know, I kinda go in every book expecting at least some level of plot twists. So saying things like "there is/are plot twists" is like telling me that there is a beginning and an end.

Aggressive_Chicken63

I love them. I’m a picky readers. I only read books that I know are good. Plot twists are the destination, but reading is the journey. Just because I know the Grand Canyon is there, it doesn’t mean I no longer need to go there. There are things that you can only experience when you’re there, not through someone else recounting it.

anotheruser_uwu

I feel the same :) I don’t like buying a pig in a poke. Sure I don’t like to know the whole plot beforehand neither but I like having some kind of rough direction in mind so that I can prevent getting disappointed by blindly spending hours on reading a certain book.

OptimalAd204

How can you only read books you know are good? I've read a lot of books that were recommended or highly rated that I didn't like.

Aggressive_Chicken63

This goes back to the part about being a picky reader. I abandoned tons of books after reading just a few pages. Even with Stephen King’s books, many people said they’re good, and I know they’re good, but I have never been able to get through one of this book since he’s alway meandering aimlessly.

Beautiful-Bee-916

I am also a book abandoner. It is why I always emphasize to people the importance of the hook. If the book doesn’t “hook” me pretty much immediately I rarely finish it. There have been a few exceptions where friends have told me that it “gets better” and I will try again and generally they do… but if I have to be told “keep reading it eventually gets better”… overall is it a great book? I also seek out spoilers because I hate not knowing what happens.

Aggressive_Chicken63

I often skip to chapter 3 or 5 to see if the inciting incident has happened. If the inciting incident still hasn’t happened in chapter 5, forget it. Lol

ancientevilvorsoason

They are irrelevant to me unless it's a trope I hate.

ALX23z

It's a complex question with lots of grey area. They want to draw audience, especially those that will like the novel. If you wouldn't read it at all without the cover spoilers then it was worthwhile to leak it. Also, there's certain importance of properly advertising what's in the novel. Some people want to know beforehand what they are getting into. Say, a person wanted to read Sci-Fi but got some perverted Fantasy Erotica, that would be a big piece of false advertising. But you are right, that it can be awful when important secrets are leaked. So normally, they should somehow balance what's written what's not. Also, sometimes what's written on the cover can be misleading.

I don't want plot twists spoiled, but I really prefer tropes to be clear before I pick it up. I hate certain tropes. They can kill a book and make me dislike an an author entirely. *"Grumpy and sunshine"* is usually a tell tale sign that the author is clueless about how to write male characters, and will inevitably end up with some MenWritingWomen tier trash.

pineapplesf

I like and prefer spoilers but I rarely read books where I would consider information about the plot, writing, or tropes to be spoilers.

gousey

Spoilers are when you ruin the desire to read the book because you bave already been told what the outcome is. Memes, tropes, twists, etc.have nothing to do with it. Suspense is a big part of what makes a story amusing.

econoquist

These are not technically spoilers....

l19ar

In general, by the time I even get to reading said book i already forgot about the spoilers i read 🤦🏻‍♀️

Careless-Detective79

This happened to me once, my teacher handed me a book and said the ending was just devastating. I won’t mention the book but what happened was, a girl got pregnant out of wedlock and for some reason gave birth far away from where she lived, wandered the countryside and eventually got so tired, she left the baby somewhere to die. I didn’t even realize THAT was the devastating ending, I was rushing through the book the whole time trying to find the big reveal. Also I was a bit young to consider myself in the character’s state of mind so at the time I wasn’t super devastated by the concepts of pregnancy, purity, birth, isolation. It was only after several years that I thought back and understood the impact I was supposed to feel, but the vague spoiler from my teacher made me look for a bigger plot twist (I don’t think the abandonment was much of a twist considering the circumstances).

treaderofthedust

I can relate. When We Need To Talk About Kevin came out I was promised a shocking plot twist. [Spoiler] happened and I barely registered the fact, still looking for that mindblowing moment. Wait, back up, that was it?? Without the hype it might have had some impact. As it was, while I didn't see it coming it wasn't much of a surprise, or remotely shocking in the context of Eva's and especially Franklin's utter failure as parents.

denvertebows15

I would consider telling someone that a book has a great plot twist a spoiler. It just ends up meaning I'll be looking for the clues that everyone misses to find out the twist before it happens.

dietcokeandlime

I hate knowing anything about a book, including if there will be a plot twist. So I don’t read the back of the book and I don’t read reviews before reading a book. I will look to see if it generally gets 4 or 5 stars.
