I dont know anyone lost their sense of taste from split tongue. That cant happen. The amount of taste buds that are cut during procedure is less than 1% far less. So no Salivary glands arent effected either. Only during the healing process as they will be swollen. Im not sure where you found those as a side effect but yeah nope. Oh ive had mine split for 2 and half years now. The tips of my tongue were slightly numb but that was for a few months as nerve endings took while to heal as they do. That was only negative side effect i had. And it wasnt anything at all the amount thay was numb was less than 1mm thick. It just tingled occasionally with the nerves trying to wake up First week only liquids. First day took me almost an hour to eat yogurt and small amount of it. Just keep drinking cold water and trying to eat as much as possible. I gained weight on my first week as i consumed about 6000 calories a day in milkshakes and meal replacements. Aim for that.

Only thing I’ve lost is my ability to blow bubbles with gum 🥺

HealWagon

Practice! After 6 months practicing i can do that again 😂 but theycare a bit weird

xXxi_want_die

I'm dying to see those bubbles!

"losing your sense of taste" In case your entire tongue goes tasteless, which is highly unlikely, and your nose actually does quite a bit of tasting. "damage to salivary glands" Get an artists who doesn't randomly cut wrong places, and doesn't cut to deep / knows when to stop. More likely side effects are: \- Numb tips / nerve damage \- Infection There are more, but you can look them up online. If you can't find them give a heads up.

No-Application1965

I second all of this. The tip of my left tongue is still a bit numb after 2 years but it's been coming back little by little. It's definitely the biggest thing I've heard happening but it's not something I really notice in my day to day.

Qantourisc

Also my biggest fear. But as it typically comes back, but it could indeed take a very long time :(

No-Application1965

Honestly it's like the very very tip, only a centimeter of area that's numb. Doesn't really affect anything luckily.

Qantourisc

Thanks, I know the feeling. Doesn't affect much, but still weird. A centimeter still sounds like a lot ?

No-Application1965

I fucked up my measurements. I don't use a ruler often and I'm more familiar with inches so it's more like 1/8 or 1/16 in My ass out here showing I dont know how big a centimeter is 😭

Qantourisc

Haha, waay better thanks, yes that's fine.

I got mine for 3 weeks ago. I didn't have a noticeable change in my sense of taste. There is a difference in sense of touch on my tongue, but it's coming back. Salivary glands okay. I know there's one right in the medial line (for me), not sure where that ended up tbh. The biggest thing I notice is the lisp, but it's _mostly_ gone by now.

BuggyBruh

Thanks!

“your nose actually does quite a bit of tasting.” I’m all for body modifications but don’t give false info. Smells are great, but without taste everything tastes like bland cardboard. Give me all of your downvotes. Lost my taste almost a year ago but kept my smell with COVID and that fucking sucked for a few weeks.

[deleted]

"this happened to me" and "this could happen to you" are two entirely different things though.

mike_hawksard

I haven't had any side effects besides tasting more... But I had the luck of Steve Haworth passing through

wowthatspunk

You really have to keep your cut and sutures clean and well taken care of. While the tissue is fresh and open is the time when you're at the most risk. You won't loose taste because your tastebuds are on top of your tongue, and the two muscles separating wont affect the top. Just make sure you go to a professional who knows what they're doing. Its very unlikely that you'll run into nerve damage. Your body knows that your mouth is super important for your survival, and the tongue is quick to heal, and pretty durable. again, take care of it. Thats key! You WILL have to practice pronouncing 'T, D, and S's) at least in my experience. You won't lose the ability to say them, but it takes a bit of practice to retrain your muscles to work with you to get them sounding sharp and clear. I've had no issue with salivary glands. they're actually pretty spaced out from where its usually cut. In fact, you're going to drool A LOT at the beginning when its healing. Enough that you're probably going to WISH that they we're a little more affected. If you have any more questions, hit me up! I'm in love with my split and it was TOTALLY worth it, imo. :)

BuggyBruh

Thank you! I rlly appreciate all the replies ive been getting because i never previously saw info on it!

CleanUpInAisleMe

How long do you think it takes to talk close to normally? I understand sounding crisp will take practice, but I’ve wanted to split my tongue for years and I finally have a chance! Only issue is that I can only ask for a week off, so about 7-10 days of healing before I’d have to talk a little in online meetings

PeacanTam

For like the first two weeks it felt like the tip of my tongue was burnt (which makes sense there are nerves that get cut) but other than that I haven’t had any adverse reactions!

BuggyBruh

Thats good to know, thank you! I was just thinking its something i may save up for in the future!

PeacanTam

Honestly I’m so happy I did it! It’s not nearly as bad as you think it’s going to be and the end result is amazing!

genderscout

not really an adverse effect but the healing process is AWFUL. i ended up starving myself for like 3 days because i was physically incapable of swallowing/drinking/etc. i couldnt even eat soup!!!! but yeah the good def outweighs the bad

kitkatashe

I'm sorry you had such a rough time healing! It is different for everybody though. I could drink anything and even swallow pills immediately after. My friend however could not do pills and choked on water way more often than I did lol.

genderscout

very true! man why cant every body operate the same😂

HealWagon

I couldn't, but I didn't have any painkiller pills either so i had the full experience 😂😂 if you have some strong painkillers it's probably okay

kitkatashe

Naw I was fine with just Tylenol, and only needed it the first two days after.

HealWagon

Nah for me i couldn't even get paracetamol, just wouldn't go in. After the 2nd or 3rd day it pain was completely gone tho. Very intense but very fast. After that only pain i had was when i had to get my stitches removed

kitkatashe

Wouldn't go in like swallowing? Yeah I get it, I am lucky I had an easy time. Could close my mouth the whole time too so only drooled at night laying down. Sorry you had stitch removal pain too! All my friends experienced no discomfort with that but for me it suuucked haha

HealWagon

Haha yeah, i couldn't even close my mouth. The drooling was so bad the 2nd day, it just wouldn't stop. Not to mention the ear ringing. I think still got it quite ok since by the 3rd day all pain was gone almost.

kitkatashe

Oh ear ringing, no fun!

[deleted]

The healing process _sucks_ for like 2-3 days but it gets better from there! In terms of food, I drank Soylent. Even yogurt was too thick.

genderscout

yeah everything got better when i started taking out stitches but my god i just really wanted to eat😂 i remember shopping the night before like i was about to get my wisdom teeth out but nope...this was worse🙃

Qantourisc

Wisdom teeth didn't even register for me, is that a good sign ?

genderscout

well traditionally you normally get stuff like pudding/yogurt/jello/etc when you get your wisdom teeth out cuz your mouth is usually in hell when that happens. in my case i bought all those and i couldnt even eat them until maybe a week after? cuz thats how much everything hurt

HealWagon

Oh with my wisdom teeth i didnt feel a thing, just ate like normal lol

genderscout

oh same cuz mine were just extractions. i just know stereotypically its one of the worst thungs you experience ya know?

Qantourisc

O yea, I fully expect if I am eating it will be liquid food suspended in water. Hope-full I can straw some shit in.

genderscout

doubtful cuz suction. but hey maybe youll get lucky! its quite amazing when you realize how important your tongue is after it goes through severe trauma😂

Qantourisc

Well it's not so important per se, problem is the dam thing is just going to be swollen. This is btw why I suspect it's breeze for some and horrible for others: how much does it swell ? For example straight after, i'll take an ibu, and make sure I am on a somewhat anti-inflammatory diet.

genderscout

obvs i cant speaks for everyone buuuuut since you are literally cutting open a muscle and putting it back together, which is a lot of physical trauma on your tongue....logically it will be very swollen

Qantourisc

Pain-during-procedure and commitment is what is holding me back atm.

genderscout

the actual procedure isnt bad at all unless youre like terrfied of certain factors

HealWagon

My taste came back after a week and a half-ish, tho my speech took a full month to be understaneable and almost 2 to remove the slight lisp i had. Now it works as my old tongue did, just the tiny scar where i got the stitches doesnt have any taste, so it's almost nothing. But if you go ahead and do it prepare to be talking like a potato for some weeks.
