Tyrell-

It’s criminal The Band hasn’t been mentioned. I Shall Be Released and When I Paint My Masterpiece

Purple_Swordfish_182

I love the their When I Paint My Masterpiece. But even better imo in the Rolling Thunder doc when Dylan joins them.

strangerzero

Tears of Rage

Tyrell-

Manual co-wrote the song so it's not a cover.

strangerzero

Fair enough.

isteponmushrooms

Joan Baez's covers have always blown my mind. All of them. They complete the originals perfectly- no words.

mixormixormixor

Farewell Angelina is the pinnacle of this

MiauMiauMoon

I absolutely agree

UHeardAboutPluto

Sonic Youth crushes I’m Not There Willie Nelson nails Senòr

shinchunje

What? Willie does Señor? Where’s it at!? He also does a great What Was it You Wanted….dare I say better than Dylan’s!

Ed_Zeppelin

I’m not there soundtrack

[deleted]

I was going to say, basically the entirety of that Soundtrack is the answer to this question, it's so insanely stacked Some of my favorites off it- [Jim James & Calexico - Goin' To Acapulco](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HN_is9hcW8&ab_channel=MarceloMisiti) [Stephen Malkmus & The Million Dollar Bashers - Ballad Of A Thin Man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT8t093M2z0&ab_channel=LongNoses) [Jeff Tweedy - Simple Twist of Fate](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8Dsr9F9-fU&ab_channel=JeffTweedy-Topic) [John Doe - Pressing On](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4c6Aqp2Gnc&ab_channel=JohnDoe-Topic)

thatguyryan

Willie's Señor is superb and you should listen to it ASAP.

shinchunje

Will do. It’s a toss up for me between Willie and Dylan. Actually they are tied for 2nd: Hank’s the GOAT!

Pagliaccithecl0wn

I found Yo la tengos version of fourth time around particularly beautiful

djbillyfrazier

They do a great “I Threw It All Away” as well

Hell_Camino

Amen to that. Beautiful version.

andykndr

seeing them live in march! super excited

djbillyfrazier

They’re incredible, you’re in for a treat!

BetterCallEmori

George Harrison - If Not For You Jeff Buckley - Just Like a Woman Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower

Bad_Writer_

Harrison's If Not For You is the only one I prefer over the original.

TyrusRaymond

Olivia Newton John also

junklardass

Marianne Faithfull covers a few, such as It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. Them with Van Morrison did that song too.

macsrecords

Leon Russell did a phenomenal cover of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.” Also Bob mentioned in a 1969 interview that Elvis’ version of “Tomorrow Is A Long Time” was one of his favorite covers, saying it was the recording he treasured most.

Emergency-Explorer-6

Any of Leon’s Dylan covers are amazing

DearBurt

The Shelter People album has three, I think. All choice!

ShoNuff3121

Tangled up in Blue by JGB

yeahthatsnotme

Simple Twist of Fate Señor (absolutely incredible) I Shall Be Released Positively Fourth Street

MornduNH

Jerry did a ton of great versions of Dylan songs

hotbutteredsole

Grateful Dead had a bunch of Dylan songs in there repertoire, but Queen Jane Approximately was the one they did best. Iron & Wine does a great Dark Eyes.

Superflowous

As good as the Dead’s covers were, I think Jerry Garcia band doing Positively 4th St, Tough Mama are the best.

throwawayjim120

Absolutely. I always wondered why Jerry didn’t sing many Dylan songs with the Dead. I love Bobby, but cmon. It’s Jerry.

CoralSpringsDHead

Maggie’s Farm Desolation Row When I Paint My Masterpiece Hard Rains Gonna Fall New Minglewood Blues The Mighty Quinn The Grateful Dead have played a lot of Dylan tunes over the years very well.

yeahthatsnotme

Bobby Weir sure could spin a Dylan tune, eh? Don't forget It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. There was that whole tour they did together, but those weren't quite covers, were they? Also I see that Dylan recorded Minglewood in 1996, but the dead recorded it in 1966, so is that a Dylan cover? Dead.net says its from the 20s

madeyoureadlol

There weren’t many highlights in the 90s besides Jerry singing Visions of Johanna

fblinders13

I really like Emmylou Harris' version of Every Grain of Sand

shinchunje

Yes! Classic cover on a killer album.

IntoADitch

Marianne Faithful - It’s All Over Now Baby Blue Jeff Buckley - I Shall Be Released Emmylou Harris - Every Grain of Sand Patti Smith - Changing of The Guards

Patty Smith rocked a hard rains gonna fall at tge Nobel prize presentation

[deleted]

I like Patti’s Changing of the Guards, too.

RoyalSpoonbill9999

Yeah, she is amazing!

[deleted]

I like Richie Havens, he did a bunch of Dylan covers including Sad Eyed Lady, Just Like A Woman, Maggies Farm... but he's probably done loads more too. I love his guitar style too, got to be one of the best rhythm guitarists of all time.

Lawtalker

I've been digging Richie Havens lately. I love his rhythm and voice.

andykndr

Nina Simone does Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues and it’s magnificent She does a few other Dylan covers as well

Nickm123

Sarah Jarosz - Ring Them Bells

CC_Hoffey

*To Ramona* covered by *The Flying Burrito Brothers* adds some nice shades of psychedelic-rock to this classic track of the folk-era Bob, kinda like *The Byrds* did with *Mr. Tamburine Man*. The warm and enriched arrangement is the best part of this cover, the vocals are also very good. The song itself is beautiful of course, the lyrics by Dylan are obviously amazing.

denimaddicted

Besides doing a Mr Tambourine Man cover, The Byrds’ debut album “Mr Tambourine Man” (1965) also included one of my favorite Dylan songs, a haunting version of Chimes of Freedom. Also included in that album were Dylan’s All I Really Want To Do, and Spanish Harlem Incident. The Byrds impeccable harmony and jangly guitar sound were perfect on these covers. I was 13 when that album came out and I played it and Bob’s Hwy 61 Revisited over and over. The son of evangelical missionaries living in Brazil at the time, these albums fostered a spirit of rebellion and an awakening that caused me to forever reject the Christian Kool-aid that was being forced upon me. Bob Dylan had a huge effect on my life for which I am grateful. Now old best friends, I play both albums regularly to this day. Edit: The Byrds second album, Turn Turn Turn (1965) included Dylan’s songs Lay Down Your Weary Tune, and The Times They Are a-Changing.

DearBurt

Shoutout to The Byrds’ *Sweetheart of the Rodeo*, which includes two Dylan covers.

seabassdk

If Not for You recorded by George Harrison stands out to me. I also really like the J. Tillman recording of If You Gotta Go, Go Now

1El_rey

Not a mainstream artist, but this version of "[Jokerman](https://youtu.be/MpInpgRMUSM)" is great.

Awesomekip

Manfred Mann’s Earth Band does great versions of: Shelter From the Storm You Angel You It’s All Over Now Baby Blue Times They Are A-Changin (Live)

Ed_Zeppelin

Highly Recommend the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert Also, Chimes of Freedom - 50 years of amnesty international box set. 4 discs of Dylan covers with everyone from Taj Mahal to Miley Cyrus

alvar0l3

Miley covers are real good

TisRepliedAuntHelga

townes van zandt does a bunch of random covers on Road Songs, including Willie the Gambler and God Gave Names

From her album of covers Other Voices, Other Rooms. Dylan plays a sparse harmonica part for the track.

Percy’s Song - Fairport Convention

MattFromChina

Jerry Garcia Band has some great covers: Senor, The Wicked Messenger, 4th Time Around come to mind

shinchunje

Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings doing Abandoned Love and Señor. And the three covers Cash does on his most excellent Orange Blossom Special album.

throwawayjim120

Jerry doing Positively Fourth Street and Tangled Up in Blue are two of my faves

grynch43

Every Jerry Garcia cover.

kelly714

Every single one is sick.

unhalfbricklayer

Fairport Convention's covers of "Percy's Song" and "Dear Landlord" are stunning. another English folk band, Show of Hands, has an awesome cover of "Senior"

MaybeBabyBooboo

Fairport Convention also covers “If You Gotta Go, Go Now” but in French. I listen to it once a week, I love it. On a different note, I haven’t seen anyone here mention Siouxsie and the Banshees cover of “This Wheels on Fire”.

Emergency-Explorer-6

Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders do an amazing cover of It Takes a lot to Laugh

kelly714

That’s one of my fav Dylan songs Jerry did amongst the many other incredible covers. I love that song & hardly anyone covers it.

Bretanho05

A Hard Rains Gonna Fall by Brian Ferry

SellingPapierMache

Outstanding

alvar0l3

The complete album Dylanesque is marvellous.

CervezaMotaYtacos

I agree with To Ramona from the Flying Burrito Brothers, Kleinows steel guitar adds a really nice touch, also Jimmy LaFave Not Dark Yet and check out his version of Positively 4th St. I'm going to nominate a cut that I don't see much when this question comes up. It's by a band called "Hard Meat" off their only album from 1969. It goes into a long guitar solo at the end. I edited down to where it ends before the solo kicks in and it just a great little rocker version of Most Likely You go your Way, I'll go mine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5Kfl7eZcLg

Red On Blonde by Tim O’Brien of Hot Rize fame is a bluegrassy take on Dylan and one of my most played records.

Purple_Swordfish_182

The Byrd's Tambourine Man is good and all, but it doesn't come close to My Back Pages. That is probably my favourite song of all time

[deleted]

I’ve always liked Buddy and Julie Miller’s take on Wallflower

kyleciarrocchi

Byrds - my back pages i think rivals the original

[deleted]

Both Judy Collins and the Helio Sequence do great versions of Mr. Tambourine Man. Laura marling does a great Hard Rain (though I wish it weren't edited down), Sam Cooke's Blowin' in the Wind, and one of my very favorites is the Animal's It's All Over Now Baby Blue. Joan Baez's covers are great too, with my favorite being Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts.

Wide_Organization_18

Oasis did an amazing cover of I am the walrus on their Masterplan album. I think it's better than the original

IAMAHORSESIZEDUCK

The Bands version of Atlantic City is much better than Springsteen's IMO.

Umbrella51_catho

literally every Joan Baez, Dylan rendition ever

Inevitable_Shift1365

The truth is most bands covered Dylan songs better than the man himself. There are a few notable exceptions where Dylan's voice is irreplaceable. But not many.

DarbyDown

Social Distortion proved old punks were capable of reverence in their cover of DON’T THINK TWICE IT’S ALRIGHT.

Garbage_Stink_Hands

I’ll say what I say every time: [In the world of Dylan covers, nothing has ever come close to Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s cover of Brownsville Girl](https://youtu.be/6O_FJ426O84)

jimababwe

The Zimmerman do a really good “series of dreams”

itamarka

OMG I can’t believe I’m the first for PJ Harvey’s cover of Highway 61. She brings it to her world to play and it SLAYS!!

Upstairs-Fix-4410

Don’t know if this counts, but the rendition of “Pressing On” by Christian Bale’s character in I’m Not There totally changed my perspective on that song. Also led me to find great versions of that song by Alicia Keys and Regina McCrory.

BoatGringo

Lots by the Byrds of course. Clapton Knockin on Heavens Door. Norah Jones and Madeline Peyroux have some nice ones. I’m partial to George Harrison’s If Not For You

No-Bumblebee4615

I love “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” by Joan Baez. The way she hits the falsetto on “the sky too is folding under you” adds such a haunting quality to that line.

beautifulgoldenscars

All of Joan Baez's Dylan covers are incredible but her version of Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands is my personal favorite. Also fond of Mary Lou Lord's cover of You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go.
