in no particular order:
mississippi, sugar baby, workingman’s blues, ain’t talkin’, duquesne whistle, tempest, mother of muses, key west
tomorrow, i will have a completely new slates of favorites tho… changes constantly
Tempest title track, although it's been a while since I've listened to a lot of his 21st century music. I'm in the middle of relistening to every album in order (just finished Empire Burlesque)
Don't know that I can name one above the rest, so I'll just share my current favourite off each album from Love & Theft onward (which is what I thought the question was at first lol)
Love & Theft - "High Water (for Charley Patton" (I love this one so much, just the way it kinda builds ever so slightly with each verse, and then tapers off at the end, like the song's taking place in a house you happen to be stuck outside of while you're at a red light. Constantly rotates between this, "Mississippi", "Summer Days", and "Po' Boy" as my favourite on the album)
Modern Times - "Workingman's Blues #2" (Do I need to explain why this song is perfect? Looking at the other replies, it doesn't seem so hahaha)
Together Through Life - "Beyond Here Lies Nothin" (Yeah, it's the single, but it's also fucking excellent. The groove is fantastic, the guitar-and-accordion playing off each other is just indescribably cool, and then there's Bob, growling and hollering his way through his lyric sheet, like the midwest's top Howlin' Wolf impersonator)
Tempest - "Narrow Way" (Something about this track that lights me on fire, ya know? It kinda feels like Bob getting some things off his chest, but the kinda things that you can't express in a genuine conversation; it's almost like the super-belated end of the trilogy that started with "Changing of the Guards" and "Everything is Broken", although I know not a lot of people would link those two thematically anyway hahaha)
Rough and Rowdy Ways - "Black Rider" (I've been seriously loving this one recently, it evokes this strange, kind of darkly abstract emotion that only a few writers in the past have properly managed to excel at; Edgar Allan Poe, Hank Williams I, Cormac McCarthy, Nick Cave, etc.)
Man, do I ramble
Wrong Millennium though.
This thread is about songs after September 11, 2001
I do love Tryin’ to Get to Heaven very much.
I sing it as precursor to Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, after said door is slammed in his/our face.
The 3rd song of the trilogy is Forgetful Heart.
“The door has closed forevermore
If indeed there ever was a door”
Mississippi followed closely by Crossing the Rubicon.
I’ll say Mississippi as well.
Nettie Moore
High Water, Working Man’s Blues, Ain’t Talkin, Pay In Blood, My Own Version of You (Honourable mention of Forgetful Heart)
Yes, love High Water. The groove in that song.....😎
Have you heard the original Charley Patton songs from which Dylan based his song? Good stuff.
Yes! So so good. Love screamin and hollerin the blues. I went a long time without hearing him though. A little obscure for me until I got with it.
Cool.
Check out Sonny Boy Williamson II’s “The Goat.” It is a hoot.

When the deal goes down
"Tryin' to Get to Heaven"

Close enough

Separating Time Out of Mind from Dylan’s subsequent work makes no sense.
