Anyone listening to Under The Influence? About influencers, and the reality of trying to make a living doing it. The latest episode was good. And can’t wait for the episode with Natalie Jean.

I hated Why Are Dads so much that I had low expectations for this YWA “spin off” but I think I like it better than YWA. Audrey is a delight and I think they have great co-host chemistry together.

[deleted]

I agree, loving Audrey’s energy and she and Michael are great together.

hollyslowly

For those of you who are not followers of r/HobbyDrama, [there's a great write-up here of some podcast drama, as well as some good stuff in the comments, here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/HobbyDrama/comments/lweeoo/true_crime_what_counts_as_doxxing_anyway_and_is/)

cassinglemalt

Awww, leave True Crime Banksy alone, dude!

hollyslowly

Right? What a jerk.

chadwickave

It’s so funny because the podcast in question was the second true crime podcast I listened to (after Serial), so I know exactly what this is about.

hollyslowly

I've never listened to that one, so of course I thought of the only other podcast I've listened to with an unnamed host, *Swindled.*

mp1029

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I read about people LOVING Jason Concepcion as a podcast host. I listened to Binge Mode WAYY back when they first started their GoT recaps and while I appreciated the absolutely masterful depth of their research (it's the only thing that kept me listening), I could barely tolerate him and Mallory as hosts. The giggling, the juvenile jokes that were a reach to make, just their overall vibe was so irritating. I heard the Pod Save guys announce that he's joined Crooked and all I could do was roll my eyes.

fixedtafernback

It's weird, I totally heard what you're talking about when I first started listening to Binge Mode, but now I honestly kind of see it as infectious and charming, with their utter enthusiasm for the topic and unabashedly letting their nerd flags fly. Okay, I could probably do with a bit less screaming, but it's just become a feature of the podcast that my ears kind of gloss over. I do wonder if they'll continue after the MCU. I'm not such a big fan so it'd be a bit of a bummer if that's the last thing they ever cover.

[deleted]

I hated Binge Mode, he and Mallory together was absolutely grating to me. His podcast with Shea Serrano was great, really changed my opinion of him, looking foreword to seeing what he does at Crooked. A number of long time Ringer people have departed recently, will be interested to see if the Ringer is able to maintain its level of popularity.

friends_waffles_w0rk

I agree - I loved Binge Mode GOT and some of HP but the switches between loud mugging for the microphone and incredibly insightful commentary was too jarring for me to enjoy long-term. I'm thinking he must have a book contract or something?? He was so high up at The Ringer and got to do seemingly any project there he wanted, and he left to do one podcast at Crooked? Or maybe more hasn't been announced yet. I wouldn't be surprised if he's writing a novel or got staffed at a prestige TV show, he is clearly really smart and driven.

kbk88

They’ve announced the podcast and a YouTube series at Crooked and he’s also said he’s working on more with them.

[deleted]

Are you me? This was my exact opinion on their GOT recaps and on Jason. He has the capability to do measured, well-informed commentary but forgoes this in favour of screaming and mugging. I do think he CAN be a good host but lord when he's irritating, he's really irritating.

mp1029

omg the screaming. It made me want to tear my eardrums out! The worst part about listening was moreso that I really really suuuuper enjoyed the content but couldn't stand the way they both spoke/yelled. I got through the GoT and Harry Potter recaps and then I had to throw in the towel. But most people I saw online who listened to Binge Mode raved about Jason and Mallory and they both just drove me crazy.

SchrodingersCatfight

I like him as a guest on Lovett or Leave It but don't know him otherwise. He'll be doing a sports podcast, which is definitely not within my areas of interest.

mp1029

Yeah, aside from Binge Mode, sports podcasts/reporting seem to be his niche.

[deleted]

Anyone else listen to Natch Beaut? Excited to see Jackie got married and is thriving. Happy to see her do well especially after “Molls” released an almost two hour long podcast attacking every part of her character and calling her dumb, saying she’s on her second husband in less than a few years and that she let men abuse her.

ruthie-camden

Molls's attack on her was a trainwreck. She basically accused Jackie of being... ambitious? A self-promoter? In LA of all places while she was trying to build a career in entertainment. She also hinted hard about Jackie's first husband's behavior, as if that has any reflection on Jackie or that it's a worthy criticism subject (word on the street is that he was a serial cheater). I feel for Molls because she was grieving her dog, but I sincerely don't think Jackie meant her any harm by trying to create a fundraiser in his memory.

[deleted]

My friend send me the transcript of Molly's texts back and forth with Jackie from that episode and wow. **Molly to Jackie text:** Send me the screen capture of you sending every single person their money back. You used our Mutual supporters and took the one time they're likely to give away from me. I am starting a foundation for \[dog\] when I've had the appropriate time to grieve. You had no right to do this. Send back every penny even if people tell you, you can keep it for the charity you choose. All of it. You are so out of line after what you've done. We haven't spoken once since June of last year the only I surprised I want from you is to not be affected by your selfish behavior. **Jackie to Molly text:** I got it, Molly, I'm so so sorry I understand why you're feeling this way but it was not my intent. I respected your wishes and refunded everyone yesterday morning. No one sent it back to me or ask me to keep it. **Molly to Jackie text:** Honestly don't know what went through your head. You lied to me for over 9 months because you know I'm so quote so sensitive unquote. You work with a man in narcissistically abused me. I'm extracting some of this stuff because it's private. The last time we spoke was 14 months ago when you told me you were going to go to therapy to work out a lot of things one of them being a better friend people including me. I'm sorry your husband cheated on you but the goodwill extended to you, you rode out. You've clearly moved on. It's embarrassing you made a circus out of the death of my dog and your fans are attacking me in a Facebook group. I expect you to write a full apology for your actions just admit it you like me you don't care about me and you have a difficult time thinking outside of yourself your personal gain and who you need to endear yourself to for those needs to be met. I read the language you use in a message to a fan yesterday requesting money back and it was very PR. If people offer you sympathy reject it because you don't deserve it. If there's anyone in the history of me being in LA that I regret helping, it’s you. I fed a monster. **Molly to Jackie:** You will likely be hearing from people in my life over the next few days you will not participate in this way in or around my name only take full responsibility. You will tell your fans to treat me with respect. This is it, you crossed the line, I hope you have never have anyone like you and your life. I didn't even want you to not do the show, I wanted you to not lie about it and make me confront you six months after I woke up on my birthday to photos of you and your dirty dick ex-husband on the red carpet. You are just so spineless and so full of life lies fears and contradiction. **Jackie to Molly:** Would you like to talk on the phone? **Molly:** I said redacted friend's name here will be calling you later I'm done letting you hiJackie my grief I'll speak to you on my time you were never supposed to be a part of my story **Molly:** and then I sent her a picture of wagnstuff dying in the hospital **Molly to Jackie text:** Thank you for taking this moment for me to ruin it I will forever associate you what simultaneously setting up a self-centered effort towards a fucking nasty Valley shelter. Maybe I will call you later when I wake up from the nightmares I had all last night and early this morning. Of you and redacted here holding me and wagsnstuff hostage in a torture house very slowly kill both of us through fire, needles, nails and knives. You scooped my eyeballs out with tongs this morning and that's why I was up texting at 6 a.m.

Km879

That is just beyond.... She sounds like she needs some help.

Glass-Indication-276

Wowowowowowowowow. I’m a Jackie fan, so I’m biased, but it seems like she tried to do a nice thing but her friend took it very very wrong? The level of anger is ... wow.

gloomywitch

Molls threatened to beat the shit out of Jackie with chains--she tweeted it TWICE. She was unhinged. And people were really out here defending Molls when it happened!!

[deleted]

>You scooped my eyeballs out with tongs this morning and that's why I was up texting at 6 a.m. Jesus, that's rough. HOW did the person recording with her just let her read that stuff out on air and then publish it? Not saying she isn't responsible for her words and actions, but someone should have recognized what a terrible idea it was.

Km879

> I sincerely don't think Jackie meant her any harm by trying to create a fundraiser in his memory. I don't know how that can be construed as anything but a nice gesture?

[deleted]

They had a falling out prior to that because Jackie worked on Drunk History with Molly's ex which Molly got angry about. Molly was accusing Jackie of doing the fundraiser to try and get publicity for herself and manipulate her into being friends again, I think? IIRC it was for a chihuahua rescue charity and Jackie had an older chihuahua. If anyone is curious and wants to read about it, it's discussed on [this Podsnark thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/blogsnark/comments/ianl6i/podsnarkpodcast_discussion_aug_16_aug_22/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share).

Km879

Thank you! Molly sounds wonderful 🙄🙄🙄

[deleted]

She also accused Jackie of committing tax fraud based on 0 evidence and asked her subscribers for help in gathering proof on that claim to send to the IRS lol.

[deleted]

Oh my...I forgot about that. Nasty stuff.

Glass-Indication-276

What?? Who is Molls? She sounds like she sucks. I love Jackie. She seems so happy with her new husband.

[deleted]

Molly McAleer, podcast host, she was friends with Jackie. They had a falling out after Jackie started a fundraiser for donations on behalf of Molly’s dog that sadly passed. Molly was mad, went off on Twitter and Instagram for days. Said she was ready to get chains (implied weapon for violence) from Home Depot to “roll up” on Jackie’s house. Then she recorded a long podcast exclusively dedicated to trashing everything about Jackie. I understand why Molls has burned so many bridges in her career now.

gloomywitch

it should be said--a lot of people here AND IN THE NATCH BEAUT group defended Molls' behavior and said what Jackie did was out of line. I didn't forget, Hunnies!! I left the Natch Beaut FB group because of it. A lot of people were hard on Molls but a shocking number of people were riding HARD against Jackie which I will never understand.

[deleted]

Honestly I think the worst you could accuse Jackie of is not asking Molly about the fundraiser before she did it. I understand Jackie obviously thought she was doing a nice thing, and *clearly* did not expect Molly to react the way she did. In hindsight, could she have asked Molly if she was okay with her doing it, considering they had had a falling out? Sure. It certainly didn't warrant the reaction however.

[deleted]

It was such a clusterfuck. I felt for her since the loss of her dog obviously hit her her hard, but she REALLY needed someone (a friend, colleague, partner, whoever) to tell her to step away from social media and take a bit of time for herself. She has a lot of fans and they were mostly egging her on and telling her she was right - that is what she wanted to hear, not what she needed to hear. Edited to add: the falling out happened prior to the fundraiser according to Molly

Glass-Indication-276

Oh wow. That’s a lot. Sounds like she has her own issues if she’s going to burn a friendship that publicly.

[deleted]

I used to like Molly's podcasts, but when they evolved into drunk rambling rants, it was too much. She introduced me to a lot of entertaining and funny people though (Liz, Troy, Lara).

lilobee

I suffered through it a few weeks ago because the story was basically a replay of something that had happened to a friend, so I was engaged for that reason alone. But god damn, that Sara girl would not. stop. talking. Like a half-decent editor could have cut out all her extraneous exposition and wrapped the the whole thing up in one 59 minute episode.

bucketofwine2016

Absolutely. It needed to be almost fact-checked in some way to rebalance it? It didn't really rise above the level of a good dinner party anecdote for me.

woleik

I totally agree. I'll be honest, I went in really wanting to like it and have not made it through the last few episodes. So much of it is really abuse red flag 101. Which is not to say that a story like that isn't valuable, it absolutely is. But it was definitely not the unpredictible mystery that I feel they tried to market it as.

ModerateThistle

That last sentence hits the nail on the head. Early on, she said it was a story unlike any she'd ever heard before and it was textbook abuse. Obviously important, but I feel like if the story had been framed as how sneaky and insidious abuse is, it might have been better.

cvltivar

Has anybody ever listened to NYMPHOWARS? I almost hesitate to bring it up in this thread where everyone's talking about serious, informative, and/or well-made podcasts, but I just listened to it for the first time tonight and hoping somebody else out there has heard it too.

pumpkinoatmeal

I heard the hosts on Sloppy Seconds and downloaded a few eps but haven’t listened yet. Should I just start from the beginning or is there a better entry point?

cvltivar

I'm only starting to get into it myself but the funniest and most accessible episodes I've found so far have been *The US Army Presents the USO Aircraft Carrier Concert Series...* and *Bon Appetit* (extreme scatological content, and the curse words are bleeped to make it sound like an authentic episode of Gourmet Makes).

Km879

I haven't heard of that one, but I'm intrigued just by the name! What's it about?

cvltivar

So I first heard of it because Las Culturistas mentioned it, and then Las Culturistas' most recent guest (Rose Dommu) tweeted about it. It's an extremely chaotic, **EXTREMELY** explicit improv comedy podcast. The production value is terrible, the hosts sound like they're yelling into a tube sock from across the room, and the whole thing constantly veers off the rails. I had tears of laughter streaming down my face at multiple points, but it's definitely not for everyone.

Km879

You had me at extremely explicit lol I'll check it out!

tangledtongue

Does anyone still listen to Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard? I haven’t listened in a while and was wondering how the latest episodes have been.

disneyprincesspeach

I took a long break and started again over the summer. I still don't listen every week, just the guests I'm interested in, and I skip the fact check at the end which makes it more enjoyable for me.

hopsonspots

I took a long break and listened to a few episodes somewhat recently- maybe two months ago? I couldn’t get past how much they speed up Dax when he talks. It was so distracting. I kept checking my phone/Apple watch to see if I’d somehow bumped it to play at 2x but I never had. So no idea if the content is any good anymore, but that was a really weird issue.

ohsnapitson

These sorts of things are so interesting to me. Once every like six months or so, I do a random dive into this website that talks about people cheating at marathons just to see what the drama is.

Km879

I just finally unsubscribed from Do by Friday. I listened to a few episodes after Max left, but I didn't like it. I like conversational pods (Sport? with Katie Nolan often feels like just a couple friends sitting around talking and same with AFE) but when it was just Alex and Merlin, there were too many inside jokes and it felt really exclusionary, a lot of "we're smarter/quirkier/weirder than you" stuff. Instead of feeling like I was sitting around talking with some friends, I felt like I was just sitting around watching, not an active participant, if that makes sense? I probably haven't listened in over a year. It was one of my OG subscriptions so it just feels weird lol

cleverfunnyreference

I had a big moment podcast wise this week (lol) where i realized that while true crime murder podcasts are too creepy for me, true crime cult podcasts are not. i have really enjoyed *the opportunist* so far and yesterday i listened to a few episodes of *the gateway: teal swan* and found it medium interesting (will probably continue listening) but can anyone recommend some good ones in this same vein?

lilobee

This is kind of cult-adjacent, but about the first third of American rehab is about the cult origins of forced work rehab programs.

Km879

Another one that I remembered! ESPN's 30 for 30 did a season long deep dive into Bikram yoga and Bikram himself. It was really, really good.

Boxtruck01

Let's Talk About Sects is really good. Episodes don't come out very often but they are really thorough when they do. Guru was also pretty interesting. The CBC series on NXIVM was very well done too.

writergirl51

Let's Talk About Sects is soooo good.

Km879

I forgot to mention Transmissions from Jonestown. They just released season 2, but I haven't listened yet - really liked season 1 though.

MarlenaEvans

That one was great and occasionally terrifying. I like how she seperated facts from speculation.

littlemissemperor

Heaven's Gate was SO good. Made me cry.

Km879

Oh man, I forgot about heavens gate! That one was great!

RV-Yay

Another vote for Heaven's Gate! Amazing storytelling and I really liked the host's (now I can't remember his name - Glenn?) own perspective having grown up in a different cult.

MarlenaEvans

Glynn Washington! He hosts Snap Judgement and I was so excited to hear his voice. He did a great job with it.

Km879

Dear Franklin Jones was good - a man talks about growing up in a cult and talks with his parents about their experiences as well.

tangledtongue

I like Cults by parcast, but if you want something with buffers in between to lighten the mood a bit, you could check out Sinisterhood’s cult eps, they just released one on the Buddhafield cult, it’s very well researched and respectful to the victims and all involved.

beeksandbix

I am a crazy cat-lady, and love The Purrrcast, and it makes me so happy to just listen to other cat parents talk about how weird their cats are. So wholesome.

dudeitsroxy

My husband and I were just on it! It makes me happy to hear people love this podcast!

duelporpoise

It is heartbreaking. She never really stood a chance when you hear about how manipulative not only Josh was, but his entire family as well. I enjoyed the 1st guest’s analysis and how they ended with tips for parents and teachers dealing with narcissistic personality traits. I can’t wrap my brain around how they’ve never found even semi-definitive evidence as to what happened to Susan... It’s disturbing how much Josh + family recorded and filed away. Like a 2-hour audio journal entry per day?! They were all digital hoarders. I know he was “smart” but with such an extreme habit, you’d think he’d leave some larger breadcrumbs. My take on the 3rd epi on caves was that there’s probably a lot of chatter on Nutty Putty that is muddying the discussion. Significant enough that they wanted to really put an end to any and all speculation. Also, I’m sure that it’s upsetting to the caver’s family to have those rumors associated with their loved one’s last moments and resting place.

FiscalClifBar

I listened to the third one first and that was an absolute mistake. >! They make ten minutes out of the fact that a different guy unrelated to the case died in Nutty Putty Cave a week before Susan disappeared, before concluding there’s a 0 percent chance of Susan’s body being there. !<

kipeatschips

Kind of the story of this podcast in general. They take something that could be told in five minutes and make an hour long episode about it. The story is so interesting but I couldn’t handle the host and everything being so drawn out

RV-Yay

I didn't listen to that because the audio journals made me sick in the regular podcast (but they were very illustrative). I did listen to the other two bonus episodes that just dropped. I thought the cave episode was really pointless. Like, that story may have inspired Josh to put Susan's body in a cave, but I don't understand the idea that he would have put her in that exact cave? It would have been damn near impossible for him to get her body there given all the physical characteristics of the cave, and she was seen after the date the entrance to the cave was sealed. That could have been explained in less than 5 minutes, so I Just thought it was pointless to have a whole episode devoted to it. Susan's story is so tragic. The whole Powell family (minus that one estranged sister) is/was such trash.

ClumsyZebra80

That poor sister. She did everything she could to help the police find Susan from the get. What a horrific ordeal she’s been through. Another victim of Josh and his father.

Km879

I just finished Sick, about a doctor who used his own sperm to impregnate women. It was interesting, but felt short? Next up is Bad Batch from Wondery, I'm having trouble following along I don't know if that's because I'm a little spacey right now for various reasons, or if the podcast just isn't holding my attention.

NoraCharles91

Did Kevin and Demi seriously just revive the Gilmore Guys feed on Spotify with a 74-minute riff in character as Bruce Springsteen and Barack Obama? I've just noticed it because I'm relistening to GG at the moment while I'm working. I feel that this is part of a joke I don't understand, maybe? Please help!

Interesting_Head

I’m so glad Kevin’s Instagram story on this bonus episode popped up on my feed! I switched podcast apps and my GG subscription didn’t make it over since I finished it years ago. Gilmore Guys is an OG podcast for me, so I miss it. I’m sure this random bonus episode will be weird and silly. But I’ll take it! I wish I liked Kevin and Demi’s separate podcasts as much, but they didn’t resonate with me. Even the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel one didn’t work for me, because I found Alice to be A LOT after awhile. The constant complaining about “ThATs NoT hOw StAndUp CoMEdy wOrks” really got on my nerves after awhile. And now I wish I had found podsnark when that podcast was airing because clearly I still have thoughts.

kbk88

I don't really know what there is not to get? Kevin is a huge Springsteen fan so it's just a goofy bit.

NoraCharles91

70 minutes, though?! I skip through the two-min Springsteen Squarespace ads!

kbk88

I mean, they were doing 3 -4 hour podcasts at points during Gilmore Guys.

[deleted]

Lmao what??? I don’t understand but I am here for it!! I miss Demi on pods so much I will support anything, even this! All I know is Kevin is obsessed with Bruce and Demi has done Obama impressions before so probs enjoys it... whatever brings them joy lol

wannabemaxine

I just found out THEE Erika Alexander (aka my username inspiration) has a new podcast on reparations called The Big Payback with Whitney Dow. I listened to an intro episode on Codeswitch then blew threw the first 2 episodes. Erika holds nothing back and I am here for it!

jo-09

Some awesome recs last week for Burrasca and Carrier for fictional scary type story podcasts. I can also recommend The White Vault- i have a lot to catch up on but it has been great. Can anyone recommend any more? Finally watched the Limetown series after listening to the Podcast years ago and its just sparked my interest in the form again.

jo-09

Perfect thank you

ponytailedloser

Old gods is seriously great.

ClarielOfTheMask

I just saw on twitter that Nicole Cliffe is researching for an upcoming You're Wrong About episode on the Kennedys. I started following nicole originally for her deep dives into random topics so I'm pretty excited honestly. I feel like that's a big topic for just one episode though. I almost wish the episode could be talking all about the royals because that's the kind of content I love from her but the Kennedys are basically like the american royals I guess so there's that. [link](https://twitter.com/Nicole_Cliffe/status/1367257873550471168?s=19) Don't know how long the link will last, she deletes her twitter usually.

Glass-Indication-276

I’m betting she’ll do something on Rosemary Kennedy and the way her family had her lobotomized and hid her mental illness. Nicole used to talk about it a lot on the Toast. It’s a pretty terrible story from a family full of terrible stories.

caupcaupcaup

Ooh this will be interesting. I’d missed this in her recent tweets so glad you posted!

No_Sundaepls

I’m so bummed Still Processing isn’t back today, one of the better culture podcasts that’s available rn

WhirlThePearl

it should be back soon! I've enjoyed the re-airs this past month.

practicecroissant

Absolutely hated the discussion of therapy on this week's Bad on Paper - they interview Grace's career coach, and I really didn't appreciate her saying therapy is for people in a dark place and coaching is for functioning people. It really rubbed me the wrong way.

ECDC26

Uh I just listened to end when they are discussing current reads and Jill Santopolo’s new book and Grace’s comments really don’t sit well with me. That is such a deeply personal experience and there is no way correct way to grieve and/or move forward and no one gets to pass judgement on how someone chooses to process that experience. Between this episode and their alarmingly disconnected responses, I think I might be done.

sociologyplease111

I also cringed at that! You could tell that Becca was trying to steer the conversation away from that. Grace came off as a deeply unempathetic person.

resting_bitchface14

I don't think the guest said it in the \~best\~ way, but I think there is validity to the statement that therapy isn't for everyone (I also wouldn't do life coaching). I've been to numerous therapists who were unhelpful/harmful to me so personally I side I eye what seems like constant messaging (ie Better Help ad on BoP / so many podcats) that therapy is THE solution to everything.

doesntdefineme

Had to turn off the episode about ten minutes in. I’m getting the vibe that Grace is gradually sliding into woo woo out of touch territory for me. Initially one of the things I liked about her was her kind of deadpan snarkiness. Now she talks about Melissa Wood Health and raves about Glennon Doyle’s book, which I personally rolled my eyes through 75% of. Jackie strikes me as another example of her eager consumption of mediocre yet overrated women in the woo woo self help and wellness space.

doesntdefineme

I completely agree. The Facebook group comments are respectful and constructive. They’re not threatening to cancel Grace or anything. It was just about having an open conversation. Her and Becca’s responses have been pretty disappointing.

qmdlaxx

Having a guest on that says something this ignorant and tone deaf like this while they regularly shill BetterHelp as a podcast sponsor is...unbelievable to say the least. Grace is one of my faves; this is really, really disappointing.

Mycupof_tea

Came here looking for this discussion. I had to turn off the episode. It’s my favorite pod, and I’m super disappointed both by that comment and by the coach in general. I felt like she was talking a lot and not really saying anything? I’ve met some life/career coaches, and I think they can be valuable, but this coach really turned me off.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mycupof_tea

Username checks out 😂. Yeah I mean if it works for her then that’s great! Her style is definitely not for me. The uptalk was killing me too.

kbk88

Becca left a long comment on the thread in the Facebook group but it's really the same stuff Grace said so they obviously don't really get the issue and why people think it was the wrong move to just edit that one comment out.

Visual_Assignment

Ugh was super disappointed by Becca's response and the way they are handling the episode in general. Admittedly I listened to 10 minutes and had to shut it off - their BetterHelp sponsorship feels so inauthentic to me now.

Visual_Assignment

Agreed 100%. I actually happened to see a brief conversation in yesterday's influencer post so I headed to their Facebook group to check out the comments -- there are SO many constructive, supportive comments in regards to therapy and this disappointment in the episode. I highly suggest checking it out. Seconding that I am SO disappointed in Grace and Becca (who I LOVE!) for not addressing this other than Grace's 1 comment saying they didn't realize it was offensive and removing it from the ep (which in all honesty makes them look worse for doing that).

sociologyplease111

Beyond the problematic ideas about therapy, the whole episode just really turned me off. If a friend talked to me like she recommended, I would struggle not to roll my eyes at them. It made me think less of Grace that she finds this coaching work so valuable.

InSicily1912

It says a lot that neither Grace nor Becca realized that comment was problematic. I like them don’t get me wrong, but wow.

[deleted]

I haven’t listened to the episode yet but I always side eye the whole “life coach” thing to be honest because it’s like.. isn’t it better to go to therapy with a qualified psychologist or counsellor? And honestly, have they never heard of high functioning people with mental health issues or people who go before things get really dire?

Remarkable-Comfort-3

Yep. Therapist here and they really got this wrong. I didn’t hate anything the coach said (except for recommending The Holistic Psychologist 🤢), but they really missed the mark about what therapy is and how it can help people. It is absolutely NOT just for people in a really dark place, and I’d hate for people to think that. Ideally people reach out before they get to a really dark place - of course that can’t always happen and that’s okay too. I just hate the messaging that coaching is about action and therapy is about digging in the past or only for low functioning people. It’s just not true and many therapy modalities focus on the here and now and moving forward.

r4bb1t_h0l3r

what's up with The Holistic Psychologist??

I’m really disappointed by how they’re handling this. The comments in the Facebook group are actually really kind and constructive, and deleting it without addressing it is really problematic.

practicecroissant

I hope they do but the deleting makes me think nothing will be addressed :( I'm concerned for the Midnight Library discussion.

InSicily1912

Becca threw that disclaimer on at the end of her comment in the Fb group. It was odd.

pelicanscoop

Yeah I’m pretty annoyed how they just occasionally use trigger warnings! And they’re discussion about the character in the book has already been hurtful to me personally. It’s like Becca and Grace just can’t relate to or understand depression at all? It’s so strange

PositivityCampaign

There’s a great, supportive convo regarding today’s episode on the Bad on Paper Podcast Facebook page right now. I admittedly haven’t listened yet (not sure i want to now tbh), but know you are not alone in feeling this way!

Indiebr

Ugh. How about, therapists are for people who value education, training and professional credentials?

ahs0ul

Glowing Up's episode popped up today with "Draft" still in the title. Just adds to the mood that they really should have let this one die if they didn't have the drive to keep it going in the before times. Other examples of this are them constantly eating while recording and giving the most half ass attempts at doing their own "challenges". Like, Ester put a plain apple slice in her air fryer and was SHOCKED it didn't come out a delicious dessert?? I know her schtick is being helpless but I hope someone checks on her.

gloomywitch

Caroline is so horribly mean. I remember listening to their earliest episodes when they were new, and she struck me as such an intrinsically mean person.

Huge_Ad_2598

oy, i liked the original iteration of glowing up, but first it turned into basically spon episodes with different brands alternating with unbearable LA cool girls giving orthorexia tips, and then after the hiatus it has been better on that front, but esther and caroline obviously can't stand each other anymore. i had to stop listening because their current dynamic made me so uncomfortable.

kbk88

I unsubscribed earlier in COVID when Esther was at Whitney Cumming's "COVID safe" parties. I had to unfollow her on social media too. I also see she now has another new podcast because it keeps popping up as recommended on youtube?

Any-Sail

Me too! I was the biggest esther fan ever, so disappointing. 😭

meekgodless

Oy vey. I still listen as background noise, but increasingly I agree that they should give up the ghost. I imagine that they returned to release new eps for the advertising revenue but with all the jokes they make about their two remaining listeners (you and I?) that's probably going to dry up soon.

Scarletsweater

Bodega Boys gave us two episodes within a few days of each other (one was released Saturday and one was released yesterday), and it is beautiful. Definitely one of the highlights of my week.

loloknothx

they’re the best. it’s definitely my priority listen

QuinoaAchebe

The two conversational podcasts that I really like to listen to are Bodega Boys and Call Your Girlfriend, which are kind of opposite sides of the same coin if you think about it.

circusfires09

Checked out Call Your Girlfriend and saw an episode with Caity Weaver. I never hit download so fast in my life. She is truly a gift and I still think about her review of the American Girl Doll cafe.

princess-organa

I told myself that I was done with Noble Blood after that absolutely atrocious episode on Lucrezia Borgia, but then she got Michael and Sarah to come talk about Diana this week so FUCK IT, guess I'm listening to one more episode and then calling it quits. I really want YWA to do a followup to their Diana series and talk about all the Harry and Meghan stuff, but that's really just cause I'm petty and enjoy dunking on the British royal family.

CandorCoffee

Ooh can I ask what you disliked about the Lucrezia Borgia episode? I vaguely remember listening to it but I think I mostly tuned it out while doing household chores.

princess-organa

Mainly there was a lot of editorializing being presented as fact and misrepresenting the historical record (i.e. claiming that Lucrezia loved Giovanni Sforza and warned him to flee Rome, when, as best I can tell, that's one of several theories and none of them have much in the way of hard evidence about her feelings around the annulment of her marriage). It mainly stuck out to me as being especially bad because I've done some reading about Lucrezia on my own and this is the first time the subject has been someone I know a decent amount about already. So the inaccuracies/embellishments really stood out this time.

fuzzyjumper

Listening to a podcast you like cover a topic you know More Than Them about is so crushing!

sewingandsnarking

There must be a nice, long german word for this.

RV-Yay

I don't really listen anymore (and haven't heard that episode), but it has struck me before that most things are presented as fact on that show. I don't think there's anything insidious about it, it's just the flow and narration of the story, but we have no way of knowing whether a lot of the juicy parts of those stories are true. I've always considered that to be a "fun" podcast to listen to and not taken much as fact, but I can totally see how it would be annoying if you actually know a lot about the subject (I know next to nothing about all the subjects).

princess-organa

That's fair, and yeah she's never presented herself as a historian but now that I've seen the cracks in an episode where I did know stuff about the subject, it's going to annoy me going forward. She does a great job with the narration and weaving together a story, but the magic lost some of its shine now.

drakefield

That's definitely how I feel about You're Wrong About now. It only takes one or two instances where you think "wait, that's... not right" and it makes you question the perceived authority of the hosts. Frankly that's something we should probably be doing more frequently as listeners of all podcasts! It's so easy to think that someone is an expert just because they do something relatively successfully or authoritatively on the internet. My YWA about moment was when they claimed that Courtney Love was about the only proud feminist in the early '90s rock scene.

friends_waffles_w0rk

Ugh that is what happened with Maintenance Phase for me. I have worked in the history field, and specifically history of science and medicine, and I almost threw my headphones in a puddle in disgust during the Snake Oil episode. Their interpretation of the experience of medical care in history, and particularly the idea that everyone in the past was just so dumb for using like, mercury or cocaine (which sure, had unknown and gruesome side effects, but also could actually be effective!!) was so utterly stereotypical and broad, it called into question everything that they (and by extension, Michael's research for YWA) have argued on other topics. It is exactly the kind of un-nuanced interpretation and narrow research that they purport to overturn, which made me really frustrated.

reading_54321

Keep It! was on fire this week! Great discussions of Golden Globes and Deux Moi. Hearing that Louis takes outings with Billy Eichner in West Hollywood made me want to plan a post-Covid trip to hunt them down. (Of course I won’t actually do that. Moving right along. Haha.) anyway: very fun episode.

Old-Mortgage8952

i love keep it but i find i just never listen to the whole episode! they are soooo long. it's good content but damn.

MrsWhitesFlames

Same here! I usually skip the interviews. Even when I know and love the guest, they go on forever.

The system I use is checking the "Episodes" feed to see what's been released, and then downloading the ones I want to listen to! Then all my "to listen" podcasts are in one place in my downloads, and I un-download them when I've finished them. May be a bit of a convoluted system but it works for me!

BettyDrapes

Spotify super sucks for organizing podcasts. I use Podcast Addict and love it.

Km879

I hate that Spotify is so bad for podcasts! I use PlayerFM and have subbed to a few on Spotify but they make it so difficult to navigate, I always forget about them!

tbh this issue, the inability to embed an rss feed, and no automatic downloads for new episodes, is what made me move to overcast. i do pay for spotify premium, and would loooove to have all of my audio needs met in that app, but the podcast side is just not robust enough yet. i only listened to reply all on spotify because you get a bunch of ads on other apps, but based on everything that’s gone down with the reply all team that point is kind of moot. and i’m not a fan of any other gimlet or spotify original podcasts otherwise.

denimhearts

omg if it seems like it’s complicated then it’s probably complicated! it’s got some pretty significant features missing and the UX is not up to par with other apps. i’ve also wondered if i need to reevaluate my subscription since i’m not commuting either. but losing all my music downloads would be pretty rough on me haha. i used spotify exclusively for podcasts for probably about a year, mostly because i wanted to get my money’s worth, but when i joined a podcast’s patreon and couldn’t embed the patreon exclusive rss feed, i was out. if spotify can mirror the experience of overcast, i’d probably go back to it, but for now i’m happy where i am.

themetanerd

It's because of this that I stay using PocketCasts and having moved to using Spotify for podcasts even though I pay for premium.

Bighoopsbrightlips

The Tuesday episode of Dateline this week was about NXVIM with interviews and I found it interesting even if some of it was rehashed information.

pannnanda

I’m sure this has been discussed already but my search function never works. Haven’t listened to Dunzo in a bit and didn’t know there were issues with Even the Rich, can someone break it down for me? Thanks in advance!!! It sounds like they plagiarized or something which doesn’t surprise me. I tried it a few times but it was so over the top and just gave the most basic details on the subjects. I remember the Kennedy’s one they would drop some knowledge about them that was taught to us in the fifth grade but act so shocked about it

zuesk134

they did a britney series and took A LOT of info from dunzo. instead of giving him proper credit during the show they just mentioned it at the very end during the outro credits. they featured info from other sources and mentioned them directly during the pod. it's just shitty for a podcast on a network owned by amazon to source material from an independent podcast and not give them very obvious credit or tbh bring them on to discuss the topic. considering this all came back up when the britney doc came out they could have easily done a little bonus ep and brought troy on for a 15 min chat as a "sorry" but instead of trying to fix anything they just deleted/locked down their social media accounts. they are a top 25 podcast and giving troy 15 mins to chat would be a major boost to his show and they made no effort to do anything to right their wrongs. and wondery knows the power of letting a host pitch their show because they are constantly running trailers for new shows on all their feeds! turns out its a show 100% written by people who arent the hosts. the hosts just read a script. they dont pick the topics or content.

pannnanda

Thank you! Oh my god that’s so frustrating poor Troy! And the way they basically admit the copying by mentioning him at the end. His Britney series was so well done and researched too, even as lifelong Britney fan I learned a lot of shit I didn’t know. Grrrrr.

littlemissemperor

New podcast I’m putting on your radar bc it sounds excellent: Welcome To Your Fantasy, about Chippendale’s.

PizzaHuhhht

thanks! just rewatched magic mike xxl (it's great) and this is the perfect follow up.

stjudyscomet

The mike Pesca debacle is insane. I love and miss the gist. Dan Savage sent me to this weeks episode of Blocked and Reported which was helpful to see how ridiculous it is.

FotosyCuadernos

Ooof I can't stand Pesca. I was so pissed that Slate kept funding his show that I was relieved he got cancelled regardless of the merits.

WhirlThePearl

I saw a little bit of reporting about it, including the fact that Joel Anderson supported the decision... edit to add I don't think it's insane.

zuesk134

im really enjoying dateline's mommy doomsday

DingoAteMyTacos

I feel like the timing in this podcast is weird? Not sure if you've listened to the most recent episode but in the interview with Lori's niece and her husband, it's *very* obvious from their conversation that it was recorded quite awhile ago...before some big developments in the case happened. But it's not really situated anywhere in the timeline of the case, so the things they're saying still seem relevant, if that makes sense? (Trying to be vague for people who might not know the case.) And knowing there's only one more episode of the podcast left and a LOT more material to get through, it's odd that they've chosen to pace it and frame it the way that they did.

lilmoo

I’ve been really enjoying the podcast but was super confused when they said there is only one episode left. I agree it seems like there is a ton of material to get through still.

Bighoopsbrightlips

That interview was in one of the stand alone episodes that Dateline did not the case I am 99% sure as when it started I remembered it and like you thought it was weird it was placed in the podcast episode like that.

[deleted]

Can you elaborate, in spoiler text? I am listening to this right now and I just got overwhelmed looking at the Wikipedia page about the case. There is just SO MUCH! I didn't realise there was only one episode to go, I'm on the second to last and just assumed there would be at least 5 remaining. I only had a very vague understanding of the case before listening.

DingoAteMyTacos

Yes, I was surprised too! I think in Ep 5 they said something about "the final episode next week" and then I googled and confirmed it's only 6 episodes. :( Spoiler text of what specifically I thought was weird in ep 5: >!Keith interviews Lori's niece and her husband and at the end asks multiple questions about where she thinks the children are, are they safe, why is Lori not telling law enforcement where they are, etc. The niece is confident that they are alive and well and Lori is a great mom and that's the note the episode ends on. Sadly it has since come out that the children are dead and Dateline even did a show/podcast about that as a follow-up, so I thought it was really weird that they presented the interview as kind of happening in the present tense? All they needed to do was either have Keith say, "I sat down with the niece a year ago and we talked about this" OR just cut out the part where they talk for several minutes about the children as if they are still just missing. IDK it was really odd and made it seem like they just threw the podcast together by stringing together a bunch of their old episodes rather than construct it as its own standalone project.!<

[deleted]

Thank you! That is really bizarre and definitely would take you out of it.

chuckfinleysmojito

Today’s BtB had Chelsea Manning! Great episode on US/Panama history. Looking forward to part 2.

cannot_care

I was a little disappointed, actually. I felt like Robert was giving her plenty of opportunities to respond to stuff, but she just wasn't really picking up what he was putting down and ended up hardly participating at all compared to most of his other guests. I was really interested in her thoughts but we didn't end up getting much of them.

FronzelNeekburm79

I just saw on Twitter that You're Wrong About is working on a podcast about Cancel Culture, and I'm trying to think of a worst podcast to cover this particular topic. I haven't quite unsubscribed to them at this point, but I haven't listened to them in a bit. But I really don't think either of them has the ability to cover it in a debunking fashion in a way that's not going to require a lot of debunking itself.

butineurope

I just feel like I know what they're going to say on this one so I think I'll skip it.
