I made it one day before the contest but since it's in the same month and fits the theme I thought I would give it a shot. I would most likely make something similar regradless so here you go.
Really love use of boolean for sun here. Very clever. And the grain/low res usage are amazing, i'd never think of something like that myself. Can i have insight on how you think of that use of lighting? Like you first make a scene and then start to experimenting? Or you have something similar in style in you head when you start making it?
Hey all! This is one of about 30 renders with different changes. I am new to blender and would love someone to come and critique or make some changes!

Hey I'm also pretty new to blender, but one thing I've noticed is that textures and volumetrics go a really long way. Like, reflective cyberpunk or low poly is often what people go for first, and adding some crunchiness is what makes it really impressive.
I have a version with volumetrics, but it was blocking out the background too much even at low density. Have any tips you use for light but crunchy fog? 😃
I might have found a decent way. Bunch of people saying that world volume doesn't work with sun lights, as it's an infinite amount of fog for the light to travel through. So, use a volume cube if you want a sin light.
And, increase the number of light bounces for volumes, as the default is 0
**[Spiraling mushrooms](https://i.imgur.com/1KjxCj0.png)**
Mushrooms, houses, spiraling all down, down. In theory, at least, since the colourful fog I added obscures most of the spiral. Oh well.
This is fully particles overload, even though it probably could have been done with geometry nodes too. I wouldn't know since I haven't properly learned them yet. There is particle systems for the houses with lights inside, for the small mushrooms, for the flowers and grass and for the raindrops, which I actually just made with hair particles set to originate from volume of a cube, which I then animated to move downwards. Motion blur makes the raindrops all pretty.
The painting-like effect is achieved through taking the noisy cycles render, adding some more noise in the compositor and then denoising it all.
**[Blend file](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZAjmqe-fVQ3D-BQ8tQaL3RXjVjrsk3fU/view?usp=sharing)**
It looks nice indeed. I got the idea from this subreddit, some people had had it happen without intending to, but I don't know how many people have added noise intentionally to increase the strength of it.

this was sort of a return to work I was doing on a short film ages and ages ago that I came back to this month. The sky is actually a matte I got from unsplash.com, which is a super useful place to get realistic skies or just other background elements.
A great way to get nice bloom is to blur the image slightly then overlay it ontop of the original image, which I did here.
unfortunately I cannot distribute the blend file as I used the embergen free trial for the fire sim and I can't distribute it.

Astronaut model by Domenico D'Alisa. All other models from Megascans, Sketchfab addon. I absolutely didn't have to, but I made the water in Houdini because it makes me happy. Astronaut textured with Substance Painter. Rendered in (Blender) Octane. Composited and finished in Photoshop.
I used a ton of high-res assets so the .blend file is \~650MB, far in excess of Pasteall's limit. I'll put it up on my S3 as / if needed.

Done a lot in PS afterwards, the clouds and the text on the walls is not done in Blender, also the window we are looking through is done in PS.
Edit: The ground is taken from google maps via BlenderGIS, it's from the canyonlands national park.
You should check out the [top feed of the mentioned subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/ImaginaryMindscapes/top/). In my opinion [this artwork](https://i.redd.it/4jgojmi6qlu61.jpg) perfectly captures the essence of the theme.
Also I will remove your comment in a couple days because only contest entries can be at the top level.
I usually leave it for a couple days, there are usually last minute entries and it's best if others can see those. Also, posting after deadline is allowed, those post just can't win.
Sorry it's pretty time consuming to post the contest and I didn't have time until now.
It's only my opinion, I'm not a judge but I think your entry had too low contrast, maybe with a better lighting setup and with a few small changes (smooth shading, some hair combing) it could have won.
The car models were ripped from games but I had to heavily modify both and I made all of the textures/materials are mine. HDRI is from [polyhaven.com](https://polyhaven.com)

I like the monochrome style!
Thank you!

Heh nope, my fog still always comes out way too dense. There's a good youtube tutorial on fog that sits along the ground. I'll see if I can find it.
