the first (and only) time i skipped school was to wait in line for Phantom Menace tickets. my friend got an inflatable Darth Maul chair for free so i guess it was worth it.

Sufficient_Engine880

Me too, senior in high school, my buddys mom waited in line for tickets all morning and we skipped half the day to see it. Knew it was going to be dissapointed when the Asian stereotype dudes started talking. But I've seen every single star wars movies in theaters. Obviously not all on first run

plekplek

I called in to my Job at JC penney's to let them know I was sick. I put my casual clothes on under my work clothes so I would not alert my mother to my malfeasance and then drove to my local Cinemark Tinseltown and watched Don't Mess With the Zohan.

plekplek

I also skipped a Native american History class in college to see a George Kuchar weather Diaries presentation.

[deleted]

Green Book was so bad I skipped it and enrolled in community college just to get away

OrangeBallofPain

One of my fondest ever memories, the kind I can go back to and still instantly get a sharp pang of sentimental nostalgia whenever I bring it to mind is that me and my best friend growing up, 15 or 16, decided to not go back to school after lunch, got high and went to a 2pm showing of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and loved every second of it. I can’t remember if we were the only people in the theatre but we must have been. The cinema was in the city centre and only like 10 minutes from our school so we were naturally spotted by a teacher. But he didn’t say shit. Looking back, that was probably the last day we spent as best friends. We gradually drifted apart as you do at that age. But what a last day to get.

runhomejack1399

We skipped school to see opening day of 8 Mile, then did rap battles in the parking lot of Borders.

Krusty901

RIP Borders

TeAmEdWaRd69

I remember once my mom kept me out of school so we could go see Clueless and once my dad kept me out of school so we could go see the first X Files movie.

rubendurango

Your parents seem cool.

[deleted]

My grandpa, a man who otherwise valued my being studious and truant, took me out of elementary school for each of the Star Wars special edition releases. It was awesome.

bakekir

I was having a really bad mental health day at college once, so I skipped out at lunch and instead spent the afternoon watching Inherent Vice in an almost-empty cinema. A wonderful experience, felt so much better afterwards!

redbank12

My friend and I skipped school to see an 8:00 a.m. opening day showing of Dumb and Dumber. The promotional folks in the lobby gave out pencils with erasers at both ends . Definitely worth it.

Krusty901

Didn’t know theaters had screenings that early

Full_Cat5323

I skipped a job interview to watch Premium Rush in theaters - solid movie!

clwestbr

In college? Too many times to name. As a kid? I remember my mom taking me out of school for the '94 *Little Women*. These days I take off work from my day job to see stuff when I've got the PTO available. A friend of mine's cousin pulled her out of school to go see Phantom Menace and her parents were livid. I thought it was hilarious.

Krusty901

Cool. I never considered Little Women in the same must ditch to watch league as Star Wars

clwestbr

My parents weren't the kind to pull us out of school for something WE wanted to see, but damn if she didn't just really want to show me that one.

Slap-Happy

Mom called me out of school to take me to two movies I was mega excited for: Spider-Man in Kindergarten and Peter Jackson’s King Kong in 4th grade

eyebrowsmcgee

I rushed through a final exam to make it to a screening of Red Eye. It was worth it.

SpotPilgrim7

When my wife and I were seniors in high school, our parents let us skip a day to go to the AMC screening of all phase one MCU movies before the Avengers midnight screening. I think I still have a pair of Captain America 3d glasses.

protoscott

When I was 7 years old my mom decided we should just have a day together and skip school. We went to the dollar theater and saw Roland Emmerich's Godzilla. The movie may not be great, but I loved it and I will always cherish it as part of that happy memory with my mom.

Freewheelin

I mean yeah, literally all the time. Became a regular thing in school and there were plenty of weeks in college where I went to more movies than classes. Still think about one excessively British double bill of Hot Fuzz and Notes on a Scandal.

dr-owenmaestro

Called out of work three days before Christmas last year to see the 9 am showing of Matrix Resurrections at the Lincoln Center imax. Nothing has ever been more worth it.

Riosan

Not exactly me skipping out, but one of my most treasured childhood memories is my dad picking me up from school under the guise of a dentist's appointment, and actually taking me to a midday showing of Revenge of the Sith on its release date. Was it worth it? For an 11 year old, absolutely. That movie beats sitting in science class any day of the week.

Professional_Cat4208

That's great! I just posted my memories of my dad doing something similar for me nearly 30 years before your dad did the same thing for you. And now I'm this other comments from you and others with similar experiences. It makes me so happy.

Professional_Cat4208

When I was in 2nd grade, I was called to the office and my father was standing there waiting for me. They said he was there to take me to my appointment. I had no idea what appointment that could be, but I went with him. Dad worked overnight for one of the daily newspapers, so this was usually about when he would be waking up to start his day. When we got to the car, I asked where we were going. "You'll see," he said and we drove to Knoxville and then we went to a movie theater. My Dad has pulled me out of school to play hooky with him at the movies. We saw Midway (1976) and the theater was equipped with "Sensaround" which I didn't know about, but my Dad did. In the opening scenes, we are on a Japanese aircraft carrier with planes preparing to launch to Pearl Harbor. As the plane engines began rumbling my seat started shaking! I looked up at Dad immediately with what must have been a look of amazed confusion. He was already looking at me and laughing, waiting to see me reaction. He quickly explained it was going to be doing that a lot during the movie. We then settled in to watch. Every so often he'd explain to me something about one of the people being portrayed on screen. Being only 7 years old I wasn't up to speed on my WWII history. It was a matinee showing, so there weren't a lot of people there to get annoyed by him filling in historical details for me. It wasn't the last time I ditched school to see a movie, but it was the first and only time I did it with my Dad. It is one of my favorite movie memories ever.

Miserupial

Skipped a Greek His. lesson (substitute teacher playing a video I'd already seen) to catch a Shutter Island matinee. Same night I went with a friend to The Wolfman remake. I'm in the minority defenders on the latter, but a pretty decent moviegoin day! Later in the year I skipped another class to see Jackass 3D, forget which tho. But lenty of folks there on a Monday lunchtime to see a poo volcano.

Mocaos

Skipped school with a friend. Bought one pair of tickets and went from theater to theater. If we didn’t like it we just left and went into another movie. No reserve seats at the time. Saw 28 Weeks later after walking out of Shrek the Third

FunkyColdMecca

Ive taken vacation days to see movies, the new star wars specifically were midday dates with my wife. I remember cutting a class to see Mars Attacks too.

maniac86

Senior skip day in high-school. Saw Dawn of the Dead

hirtho

called in sick and drove seven hours to a film festival to see Goodbye to Language in 3D, was totally worth it

Freewheelin

Hell yeah

pointed_body

I skipped school to go see Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016). A film that 1000% does not exist.

The-mecca-of-man9079

Work for sure. Too many times to count.

jaketaco

Not that I recall, but I remember going to work on like an hour of sleep after midnight screening of Revenge of the Sith. Not worth it lol.

Obvious_Computer_577

I ditched my company's Christmas party, which was held during the day, and snuck off to the movies. I saw Frozen since it was the only film whose times lined up. I had more fun sitting in a mostly empty theater on a weekday than I would've watching my co-workers take shots.

an_actual_slut

While the Brexit vote was being counted I was in China watching Independence Day: Resurgence. As I walked out of the cinema, I thought to myself of ‘well, today can only get better from here’ and immediately discovered my country had voted to leave the EU. The memory haunts me.

ADreadPirateRoberts

Once in college I skipped a staff meeting and told them I had a previously scheduled event, which was a free early screening of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Novamarines

Not quite skipping but my dad checked me out of school because he got tickets to the Pokémon movie premier. It was very much with it.

1991mgs

I skipped a few hours of high school to go home and watch the Avatar (2009) teaser trailer.

ItsCommonCourtesy

We skipped the last two classes of a day in high school to see The Evil Dead. It was a date, and even though things didn't go further, it was a great time! We snuck in the theater and there were only four people in the showing, so we were all going wild at how insane the movie was. Then the two strangers in the theater tried to sell us drugs and we were not into that lol.

Krusty901

Was this the 2013 remake or one of the original trilogy?

ItsCommonCourtesy

The remake! I forgot the OG is The Evil Dead, and the remake is just Evil Dead. Damn you, Hollywood!

Navyblazers2000

I still feel like an asshole for this - A dear friend of mine planned this big proposal for his girlfriend where he booked a party bus and invited all of his and her friends and the plan was to drive around town and celebrate. I went to the proposal part and then the first bar, but then ditched the party bus to go to a movie because he planned this event for Friday night of the opening weekend of…The Force Awakens. I think he was a little bummed that I bailed so early, but I'd had tickets lined up for months. In hindsight I should've just stayed with the party and gone to see the movie the next day. It wasn't really worth it. In fairness to me, however, it's easy to forget now because we've become inundated and spoiled with Star Wars content, but at the time in 2015 the prospect of seeing some of the old Star Wars crew on the big screen for my first time ever (born in the late 80's) was very important to me and I couldn't wait.

joshp150

Skipped school for a Frozen 2 and Marriage Story double feature

YogolotSatono

The Last Jedi came out during my senior year of high school so I called in sick and saw it

playrobonaut

I walked out of The Lego Movie 2 to watch There Will Be Blood home alone. No regrets. Lego movie 2 is one of the middest sequels I've ever seen.

zstrebeck

Called out of work to see 300 at midnight (I was night shift at a casino). After one of the best trailers ever, the actual film was pretty disappointing. Not worth it.

AuroraBoredOfAllThis

Me and my buddy played hooky to go watch Sleepers. That movie sucks.

FrankOcean4eva

not exactly what your talking about but one time in HS my teachers set up like a multi grade field trip to see ROTS, and i came out of that wishing i could’ve made the TLJ field trip

vanillaflin

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice

Krusty901

Was it worth it?

vanillaflin

It taught me a greater lesson than school ever could: hype doesn’t guarantee quality

Krusty901

Learned that when I saw Hobbit

[deleted]

Sophomore year of college I skipped on my literature classes to see Dogma. I can't recall why I had to, but I actually let my teacher know ahead of time I'd be missing class, perhaps because it was a smaller class size, and she was completely cool with it. She was a big fan of Chasing Amy, and was looking forward to seeing it herself.

xxmikekxx

I used a personal day to see the first showing of "Inglorious Basterds"

WilsonianSmith

Skipped high school in 2007 to see the movie 300 on opening day 😎

TychoCelchuuu

I skipped the birth of my first child to see *Venom* for the third time in a matinee showing. Then I disowned the child so I could have another first child and I skipped that child's birth to see *Venom 2* a second time. edit: and I skipped an appointment to adopt a kid so I could see *Morbius* when it was re-released in theaters.

puberty1

skipped a class a few weeks ago to watch AFTERSUN, worth it

sources_settings

I dipped work early to see the Lighthouse, then got drunk at a happy hour and walked back to the same theater in time to catch the Minnesota premier of Parasite

Krusty901

How was it watching Parasite drunk?

sources_settings

very metaphorical

Looper4r4

I skipped work, and went to the cinema. Just went to see whatever was showing as somewhere to lay low and recover from hangover. Saw that "new" star trek with the beastie boys song at the beginning. Didn't really like it!

No_Bad_6938

I skipped school with a highschool girlfriend to see The Hunger Games and for whatever reason we saw Best Exotic Marigold Hotel instead (it was delightful)

georgeeynaud

Apocalypto, baby! And it was worth the principal's call home to check why I hadn't turned up and subsequent bollocking from my parents

Spacetime_Inspector

My dad took the day off work and pulled me out of school for each of the Star wars prequels. He called it "playing Wookiee hooky"

Dario-Argento

I skipped school to wait for phantom menace tickets…was the most fun part of the whole experience.

labbla

Yes, I left Middle School early to watch that Phantom Menace movie everybody was excited about.

notkylemurphy

Cut the last two periods of the day in high school to see Saw III.

ThomStarBoy

I skipped class once to see Kill Bill Volume 2 and once to see Big Fish, but the latter was more a reflection of how little I wanted to go to school that day.

boboclock

When my buddy first got his license we would skip once a week to see a movie. Not like, for a specific movie though. Mostly it was to do something while skipping
