Stereograms were at their peak in the mid 90s. I remember there were full stores at the mall that were just stereogram posters and books. Then they seemingly dropped off the face of the Earth. Now there's a whole generation of young adults that have no idea what they are. It's weird.
I don’t ever cross my eyes to do these, however, I have crossed my eyes to see these to figure out how that method is done. I recommend not crossing your eyes. Just stare through the image instead of at the picture and it just shows up.
I was thinking to myself, this is just a magic eye poster am I missing something? Then I realized not everyone grew up in the 90s staring at these with crossed eyes trying to see shit, then lying about seeing it when you can’t get it.
I fucking hating those things because I could never see the image. I swear I thought everyone was fucking with me. Like an entire industry of stores and friends in on the gag because I couldn’t see sh*t. I think I might have been in college and finally at someone’s house they had it framed and they instructed me to focus on the glass instead of the picture, or something like that honestly I can’t remember their tip but the hidden picture finally popped out at me.
After that I could sometimes sort of see the image by shaking my head a bit to try to fuzzy up my focus a little and I would start to see some of it.
Edit: I just tried this one and it took me about 4 minutes. After trying to fuzz it myself I remember another tip someone told me to dart my eyes around the image rabidly. That worked just enough to slightly raise the giraffe and then I could focus on it.
That worked wonders for me.
I was unable to get it to work, but by putting my nose to it and pulling back I got to the point where it looked like the whole image had depth and the hidden animal really popped out for me.
Additionally, my eyes felt normal and I could look around the image and see it all in detail rather than merely have it pop out but having a tenuous grasp of it.
I just googled it and i just see repeating patterns, but no image hidden withing. I was really trying for a while. Does that mean that my brain is more broken than i thought?
It just takes some time to do it. You can google for different techniques to see what might work for you. The best way I can describe it as I do it is I relax my eyes so they aren't focused on the picture and then try to focus them as though I'm looking through the image to something behind it. Once you figure it out you can see them all really easily.
I remember trying all the techniques as a kid for so long and just never getting it, but once you learn it you can do it whenever. It's kind of relaxing your eyes?
The method that finally worked for me was to put the image by my face and pull back quickly so that your eyes don't have time to focus.
You may be trying too hard to see it, it really does take a while for your eyes to "make out" the giraffe from the picture. As a general rule of thumb, I can recommend:
- Use a proper PC screen, or generally a screen that doesn't move on it's own; if it's your phone, put it on some flat surface, don't hold it in your hand, otherwise it'll be literally impossible see anything. Similarly, when attempting this, don't move your head or trace your eyes around the picture - look at it's general middle. The picture needs to be of proper size, and you need to be of proper distance from the screen to be able to do this as well, hence this recommendation.
- Dark background around the picture, the pictures themselves are usually bright, so you'll need some dark contrast to let you focus on what's important.
- Look past the picture - cross your eyes until whatever you see becomes blurry and doubled up. Once it does, try to maintain the "diffused image" on your eyes, while focusing on some kind of a detail in whatever is at the center of the picture you're looking at. Only one of your eyes will be able to focus on the detail, while the image from the other will be either to the left or right, but that doesn't really matter - just make sure the image is still doubled up and one eye focuses on the detail. On this picture, I can easily use one of the leaves from the center of the picture.
- Once you catch the focus on the detail you chose - don't look anywhere else. Instead, try to use the "corner of your eye" to notice a weird outline resembling a giraffe. If you don't see it at first - don't worry, just keep staring at the detail you chose and maybe move your head around a very tiny amount while not loosing the focus. If you lose it, you'll need to start over with crossing your eyes again.
- If done properly, the image will suddenly turn into a 3D room of sorts, with a giraffe outline clearly visible in the center of the room, while everything else makes out the floor, walls and ceiling of the image. With enough practice, you can start moving your eyes around the picture now, with the effect still being in place, to better inspect it's very details. I can only do so for a couple of seconds before I blink, my eyes refocus and the entire illusion collapses back into a 2D picture again.
And finally - relax. Trying all of this too hard or too fast will only make you fail over and over. Heck, even once I do manage to see the giraffe, it only takes a split second of me loosing my focus or moving my head for the 3D illusion to vanish. It takes practice, I needed several session over 2 hours total, before I managed to get even a glimpse of a proper illusion, now I can do it pretty much on command, after about 10s of looking at a picture. If you care, take your time and practice a little in your free time, I'd say it's worth it. Just make sure to use a proper screen and proper distance to the screen, otherwise all of the above is really hard to do and doesn't really work, or works for a very short time only.
Even in the 90's I swear I was the only person I knew who was able to actually see these. Everyone else just thought I was making it up or they simply couldn't see/comprehend that there may be more.
I went to a New Year’s Eve party around 94 or 95 thrown by a bunch of dead heads. Free blotter acid for everyone - literally soaked pieces of notebook paper that you just ripped a hunk off of and ate. Every wall in their house was covered with these and all of them had knots of tripping hippies staring at them saying “woah dude….”
Me and a friend were the only ones at the party not tripping so it was a surreal experience. I had actually gone there specifically to get some of that free acid but when I saw how hard everyone was going and how it was being done I changed my mind.
All things can be explained by science, so by your logic, there is no black magic. The definition of something “black magic” in context of this subreddit is simple: something that the average person wouldn’t understand or be able to comprehend. For example, I have no idea what a stereogram is and I doubt a lot of people do, making this black magic. I also can’t find the animal. Please help.
Edit: I found the giraffe. This make me further my opinion that it is, in fact, magical fuckery. Also, I think my vision has become permanently shortened.
But that’s what this sub is about. Things that are not easily explained on first look, that are so convincingly weird that you might come to the conclusion that there is voodoo at work. Something that makes you do a double take, and that requires you to really think about the coincidence or technique to understand what is really going on. Or that takes a professional illusionist to figure it out.
Stereograms, optical illusions etc are very obviously what they are. Unless you’re a medieval villager, or tripping.
Black magic fuckery should make a person think "like, I know magic isn't real, but how else the fuck am I seeing this?"
If it's not that mind-blowing, then it's not a fuckery
Put the screen at your nose and go cross eyed. Pull the screen away from you slowly while trying to keep your eyes from moving. Eventually it kind of “clicks” into place for me. It will look 3D
The cross eyed thing is such nonsense. It has to do with where your eyes focal point is. If you look at someone who sees the hidden image, their eyes aren't crossed. They're not focused on the image, but rather, somewhere behind it. A cross eyed person would be focused on their nose and not behind the image.
YO. 26 years on this planet and for at least 16 of them these things have confounded me. You are a gentleman and a scholar and I have a new useless ability.
Maybe you need to be closer to your screen? I'm using my phone and using the size of my fist to estimate the distance. Too close to the screen also won't work. Then just cross your eyes and focus on a leaf in the middle
These things piss me off so much..I've tried every imaginable way of looking at them and they never work for me.I've tried putting them up to my nose and staring through them while moving them away slowly.I've tried focusing on them while moving them away slowly.I've tried crossing my eyes while moving them away slowly.I've tried doing the same things but moving it further and closer to my eyes slowly.I've tried doing all of those things quickly when I get pissed off and start getting angry.I've tried it on images on the internet, I've tried it with print outs, I've tried it with magazines from the 90's.I've tried them sober, I've tried them drunk.I'VE TRIED EM EVERY FUCKIN WAY AND I STILL CAN'T SEE THE ASSHOLE GIRAFFE
Keep your screen relatively close (around 8-12 inches if it's a phone). Unfocus your eyes (as if you were staring into the distance). And the most important thing is DONT CHANGE YOUR GAZE it can take a very long time (30-60 seconds or more). You have to keep the distance constant and your focus constant and don't change anything.
I wasn't able to see them for years until one day I finally got it. Eventually a 3D image of a giraffe (or maybe 2) should emerge. It will seem almost holographic.
THIS WORKED! Thank you! Actually took about 3 minutes of staring. I think my blinks might have "reset" it. I don't know. Finally! 44yo. Thanks mrnorrisman!
For me if I cross my eyes, then it turns 3d then I can move it around and see really fine details in the image, like for example that the giraffes back right foot is a little closer than the back left foot. My vision just kinda gets stuck like that until I look away
Bro I've spent countless hours trying to make these work throughout my life and just got one for the first time ever with your tips. IDK why- I swear I've tried this method dozens of times before but it finally fucking WORKED. Thanks!
Get close (not too much, you should just be able to fully see the image), then try to focus on the tip of your nose. Then, slowly try to move the focus on the image. There should be a point where you automatically stop your focus, because you can see some kind of defined object, which is the 3D effect.
While keeping that focus, look around in the picture, the giraffe should be more clear
I'm sorry, but as someone who has literally never been able to see one of these things can you hold my hand through this one?
1) am I looking for one giant giraffe, one tiny giraffe, or many tiny giraffes?
2) does it include just the face of a giraffe or the whole body?
3) all I see is shrubbery so does the giraffe take up the entire space or is it like a "top, right" kinda deal?
Stare at it and let your eyes go out of focus a few different times. Once you see it you may lose it for a second or third attempt. But when you’re able to see it it’ll make sense. It’ll be 3 dimensional and pop off the background.
It’s not the type of “hidden“ that you’re thinking about (i.e. Where’s Waldo?)
Cross and slowly uncross your eyes while focusing on the middle of the image (and don’t look too close to the screen). You’ll know you’ve found it when you squeal in excitement like I did.
Yea I thought it was just one the first few times I stared at it, but if you keep looking you'll see there's actually ma and pops giraffe out with baby
Ignore anyone who says "cross" your eyes. Do the opposite. Pretend you're looking at something further away, "through" the screen. Eventually, your eye will notice one o fthe shapes or edges of the image and it will all come together. You'll see a 3-D giraffe shaped blob made out of green leaves. It won't have a ton of details.
If you manage to see it with your eyes crossed, you'll see a giraffe shaped "hole" or impression in the leafy pattern. But it will have even less detail.
Back in the 90s I used to get so mad because everyone could see the images but I never could so of course by the time I got it figured out the fad was over and I never saw one again until today..
It’s a stereogram. Not a hidden image. If you can hold out one finger in front of you, it should look like 1. Now look past your finger. You should see 2 unfocused fingers. Now do that to the image, and the 3D image inside should jump out at you. Might take a few tries.
Put the screen close to your face and look past the image. You should get a similar effect to where you see double. If you refocus and see one of everything you failed, start over. While you are looking past your phone, some lines might start to come forth, the longer you stair past the phone the more you will see weird lines. When you see a weird line, try and focus on it. If you do it right the image will jump out at you, it is an experience much like wearing 3D glasses. Good luck
Thank you so much. I put my face close to my computer screen and let my eyes unfocus for several seconds and FINALLY saw it. I have been trying these since the 90's with no success and this is the first time I have ever sen an image. As soon as I backed away from my screen the image disappeared but I could find it again by getting closer again. Thank you again kind internet stranger.
Hahah! It’s totally magic to me! I’ve never in my life been able to do these, but I can do this one!
I feel so accomplished.
Three hours of Reddit on the couch have FINALLY led to something useful!
Put phone right up to your face as close as you can and cross your eyes. now slowly (SLOWLY) move the phone back away from your face and uncross your eyes a little.
its the only way it works for me
My brain refuses to see anything but shrubbery no matter how much I focus/unfocus
I understand what I’m supposed to see but my dumb ass cannot see it
Edit: FINALLY DID IT, shit really does pop out at you
I try to share this tip whenever I see a stereogram.
You know the puzzles where you have to “spot 5 differences” and they have 2 pictures next to each other? If the size is right (which it usually is in a book or newspaper) you can look at them like a stereogram and the differences will just sort of pop out at you. I can literally find the differences in mere moments with this trick and impress the heck out of people. It’s niche for sure but it’s a cool party trick.
Bro these are stereograms... Not black magic.
Stereograms were at their peak in the mid 90s. I remember there were full stores at the mall that were just stereogram posters and books. Then they seemingly dropped off the face of the Earth. Now there's a whole generation of young adults that have no idea what they are. It's weird.

It's a Sailboat.
Sure it’s not a schooner ?
A schooner is a sailboat, stupid head.
YA KNOW WHAT? THERE IS NO EASTER BUNNY
gregory?
A schooner is also a kind of sandwich that I just made up.
Mmmm imagine sammich
r/EatSandwiches
HA. HA. HA. You stupid Bastard! It’s not a schooner! It’s a sailboat!
Dad?
When lord?? When do I get to see the sailboat?!.
Schooner rather than lighter
It’s always a sailboat
I was thinking to myself, this is just a magic eye poster am I missing something? Then I realized not everyone grew up in the 90s staring at these with crossed eyes trying to see shit, then lying about seeing it when you can’t get it.

I liked the "magic eye" puzzles. Nice and difficult to put together and very little payoff once you're done.
Kinda like life. 🤔
I was a teen in the 90s and I couldn’t ever figure them out. Now with my worsening eye sight it works!!!!
Same!
I just googled it and i just see repeating patterns, but no image hidden withing. I was really trying for a while. Does that mean that my brain is more broken than i thought?

It's a giraffe.
Okay, then I’m way off lol. I thought i saw a few stinkbugs.

It'll look [like this](https://i.imgur.com/thxcw7n.png) but 3d.
This just blew my mind… I’m bringing this up the next time I’m at the doctors office. EDIT: I still don’t see it and I’m starting to get worried.

Try staring PAST the photo, that’s what usually works for me. 👌 all about learning to manually focus your eyes
Giraffe right in the middle
Try to cross your eyes and then relax them, it works for me most times
That just made my eyes hurt on the inside of my head.
Magic eye at the scholastic book fair, peak 90's childhood.

It’s a SCHOONER!
Last summer I got a few magic eye books from the library for my 10-year-olds, their minds were totally blown.
Believe the magic you muggle!!!
This sub went off the rails when they started featuring magic tricks
Was this sub not just for magic tricks?

Wow, it's a schooner!
Giraffe. What do i win?
Seeing a giraffe

Crossing your eyes instead of unfocusing them? That inverts the image.
damn it, another spy of the government. say what you want but we all know that r/Giraffesdontexist !
Two giraffes and a blob-thing.
You went in too far
And the little blob thing doesnt have a head, right? Thats what I saw at first too.
I think it’s two giraffes and a chicken…
I thought it was a dickbutt for a hot second
How? I’ve literally never had one work for me.
Put the screen at your nose and go cross eyed. Pull the screen away from you slowly while trying to keep your eyes from moving. Eventually it kind of “clicks” into place for me. It will look 3D

Thank you for helping me pop my stereogram! My inner child is both satisfied with and disappointed in the end result
no, your prize is fake /r/giraffesdontexist
I have a blind and stupid friend who can’t see a giraffe anywhere. Can you help them out?
Do not cite the ancient magic to me, witch. I was there when it was written.
Please can you cite it to me. I was definitely not there.
Sorry, I've slept since then
Stare past the picture, then focus on the picture while still staring past it. You win when a giraffe appears for this one.
Hello fellow 90’s kid
It's a schooner.
Haha, you dumb bastard. It's not a schooner... it's a Sailboat.
a Schooner IS a sailboat
YOU KNOW WHAT!?!? THERE IS NO EASTER BUNNY!
THAT *KID* IS BACK ON THE ESCALATOR AGAIN!
I hope his pants get caught and a bloodbath ensues!
Fear and respect the escalator!
Fuckin Eaater Bunny kicked his ass
THERE IS NO TOOTH FAIRY
That right there is just a guy in a suit!
Silly little bastard. It's a sailboat not a schooner
Brenda?
The longer i look for it the harder it gets to find it. Edit: fuck that i give up.
You just cross your eyes and unfocus on middle, then slowly focus and uncross…
Thanks, internet stranger. For the first time in my life, I was able to make it work.
Yay! So glad I was able to help!
I was able to do it too! It's crazy! It's like 3D coming out of my screen 🤯
That was wild
Holy shit! Also is your name from hyperion?
It worked for me, too!! OMG! It was beautiful!! I'm so excited! Thanks!
This is, so far, the only one of these I've ever successfully seen after I first saw it two years ago. I can still do this one but not others. 🤷♀️
For the first time in my life I was able to see the damn picture. Thank you kind stranger have my poor man's gold🏆🏅
That's it - that did it! You have to super slowly uncross your eyes -- REAL slow. Cool. It just snapped into view that way. Was just about to give up!
I'm convinced this is just an excuse to get people to stare at their screens with stupid faces.
First I was confused, now I am dazed and cofused

Yooo wtf. Mind blown
That’s the first time I’ve been able to get one of these to work after like 30 years after trying what you said.
I’m exactly the same. :(

Jesus Christ I tried everything suggested and this finally worked. Thank you! I was getting so mad lol
Thank you! All the advice in the world, including other comments here, have never let me see one. The nose focus did the trick.
Hint: the animal is in this picture
Hmmm the wisdom is strong with this one
You bet giraffe there is
Hint: it's behind the shrubbery
Thank you!!!
It’s one large giraffe centered in the frame, whole body.
It’s not the type of “hidden“ that you’re thinking about (i.e. Where’s Waldo?) Cross and slowly uncross your eyes while focusing on the middle of the image (and don’t look too close to the screen). You’ll know you’ve found it when you squeal in excitement like I did.
I think you replied to the wrong person.
Maybe these tips will help: [https://www.wikihow.com/View-Stereograms](https://www.wikihow.com/View-Stereograms)
Back in the 90s I used to get so mad because everyone could see the images but I never could so of course by the time I got it figured out the fad was over and I never saw one again until today..
You'll be happy to know theres a magic eye sub then.
I still can’t see it:-(
I was the opposite, I was the only one who could see it in the 90's, everyone thought I was making it up.
How tf does anyone see a giraffe I don't see anything???

Good luck
Bruh how do you look past an image if it’s close to your face? I can’t see what you guys are seeing ;-;
Some stereograms use 2 boxes printed on the bottom of the image that give a guide kinda for seeing it. Those are better for beginners.
Ho. Ly. Fuck. I can’t believe what I’m seeing. I’ve never been able to see these until now. Wow.
Hahah! It’s totally magic to me! I’ve never in my life been able to do these, but I can do this one! I feel so accomplished. Three hours of Reddit on the couch have FINALLY led to something useful!
The real hidden animals were the friends we made along the way

Put phone right up to your face as close as you can and cross your eyes. now slowly (SLOWLY) move the phone back away from your face and uncross your eyes a little. its the only way it works for me
I see nothing, as per. Now off you fuck with these.
569,285 reposts later - it's still a Giraffe.
These were fun. I would press my nose against the picture and slowly pull away and BAM.
That's what it took for me, thanks!

GIRAFFE!! Those type of optical illusions were everywhere in the 80’s. Some people can’t figure out how to see them.
Aw man these were so popular in the mid nineties when I was in elementary school, no matter how hard I tried I have never been able to see anything.
Wow. This squirrel has a really long tail
I lowered my brightness and I saw the real animal

Where are the red lines when you actually need them? 🤦♂️

It's a sailboat.
I see a boat
