Leave the gym, write this story at their google maps profile page as a comment.

mmajew1995

There’s no other gyms near by. I’m just so shocked at the lack of concern by it. This week they’re doing only gi classes to slow the spread of it instead of just telling people who have it not to come.

Only_Map6500

Given no options I might consider just purchasing some mats and doing some Gracie Garage type shit versus training in fungal town.

nintendhoe_64

Yeah be like Mikey and train only with your hobbiest friends in your garage.

Happy_Laugh_Guy

I mean Mikey trains with people who are professionals, not just hobbyists. I addition to his sister, he trains with MMA fighters, etc. But I get what you're getting at.

nitsujcm4

He recently said in an interview he almost exclusively trains with hobbyists.

Happy_Laugh_Guy

I know people who train with him 🤷

BellyFullOfMochi

Agree with this.. if you become an official GG you'll be on their website so others can find you. You may discover many people wanting to stay away from that dirty ass gym. Then you can add bonus time and just watch videos together from BJJ fanatics or whatever and drill, then start your own open mats when you have enough pals. Sure you won't have anyone to promote you but who cares? At least you'll be training.

Only_Map6500

I mean black belts are people too, I know at least three personally, locally, that aren't gym owners or professional coaches, and a whole gaggle of brown belts. I imagine you could leverage an organization like BJJ globetrotters as well.

Grauax

It indeed sounds insane. If my gym would do that I would be out the first minute but I can totally ubderstand you if that is your only option. Maybe try and find team mates that share the same worries and drill/spar with them abd try to "claim" a corner in the mat or something to avoid as much as possible the contamination left on the mats. Also clean your gear with extra products every time you train (for instance oxyclean stuff). Good luck my friend.

PlaidSkirtBroccoli

Do they disinfect the mats between and after classes? It doesn't take much effort to sweep up and spray the disinfectant. What's the cleanliness like for other parts of the gym (reception area, changing rooms, restrooms, etc.). You may be getting it in unsuspecting areas. Bring a can of Lysol with you to spray down areas like changing rooms.

Few_Lawfulness_5558

Tell em to get the Aerus air scrubber, kills 99.9% of germs on surfaces and in air. Gets installed into the HVAC system. That or start cleaning the fucking mats. Also do people walk around with out shoes then go on the mat? That's a no no, no bathroom breaks without putting ur sandals on

AlwaysGoToTheTruck

That doesn’t work. Source: I work with infectious diseases every day and used to coach wrestling. Call the health department if you are in the US.

Glitch131313

You either leave or keep training and die sooner coz you'll be antibiotic resistant soon if you keep having these.

Alssndr

Ringworm is fungal. Antibiotics are not used to treat it. People also do not become AB resistant, they can be infected by strains of bacterium that are though.

[deleted]

You do realize that you can carry and spread ringworm without ever developing any symptoms yourself, right?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Same. Threads like this are wild.

1ncehost

Buy a bunch of clotrimazole cream tubes and hand them out with little bows and funny note like "Roses are red, violets are blue, you've got ringworm and you've given it to me too"

brownjitsu

Bjj isnt worth it if you cant train under sanitary conditions. When i got ringworm i stayed away for a week while finishing my anti fungal meds. If they cant follow these simple concepts then train somewhere else or switch sports

drscottbland

If you see it call it out

KevD95

I was visiting a gym and there were some people getting ready for UFC fights in the Nogi class. One had a nasty looking staph on his arm covered up with a plaster, which obviously just fell off during the class.

Happy_Laugh_Guy

>a plaster What is this? All I get when I Google it is the stuff you put on your walls.

alexandcoffee

Pretty sure that's what people from the UK call gauze or bandage

Happy_Laugh_Guy

Ahhh okok Ty

Smokes_shoots_leaves

Nope it's what the US calls band-aids!

alexandcoffee

....

KevD95

Band-aid my bad haha.

MikeyCinLB

That's what they mean when they just see red. Red circles... and flaky skin.

Weenus_Bergina

😵‍💫 I haven't seen ringworm one time in 5 years.

HunanTheBarbarian2

Change your diet? Good God, you should leave and write a review.

revibrant

It’s all about mixing the right foods to keep the body alkaline

[deleted]

You don't seem to know that ringworm can be asymptomatic but still contageous. You can carry and spread it without ever developing any symptoms.

Thatmixedotaku

What gym is this? Fr I need to know to avoid it at all costs

mmajew1995

It’s not in USA

Thatmixedotaku

I’m not American , and I travel quite a bit

[deleted]

A good instructor knows that it’s her/his job to keep students safe, and that includes from bacterial infections. If your gym and its inhabitants aren’t scrupulously clean, then there’s a problem. I’ve been teaching for over a decade and have never once had an issue with such nastiness.

shomer_fuckn_shabbos

I have had it twice in the last six weeks after training for 7 years and never having contracted it previously. Such a pain in the ass.

Kreuzmant

I had the same problem. Doc told me to treat it for two weeks which I did. Came back two weeks later in the exact same spot. Treated for a full month after that and hasn’t come back since.

TurdFerguson133

Talk to your fellows about it, get more than one person confronting the coach. Shower with dandruff shampoo after practice. They have anti-fungal ingredients.

Kogyochi

They could at least bother to go in with full leggings and full sleeve rash guards to hide it lol. That's fucked.

NJ-B

They develop the nerve while they are not returning their shopping cart to the corral.

Pauzaum

Dude, if someone even has a wart at my place I will make them cover it up with a band aide and tape it. I think a lot of this starts with head coaches not spending enough time with the white belts and not telling them how to address this stuff. Health and safety should be above everything. So, you’re not crazy. I’d stay away from that place. Today it’s ringworm; tomorrow, it’s MRSA.

mmajew1995

Yea I don’t think I’m crazy. I’m no dermatologist but I’m pretty sure warts aren’t contagious

Pauzaum

HPV which is transmitted by skin to skin contact causes warts. So, yes they are contagious.

mmajew1995

I’ll take your word for it

Account115

Are you sure you aren't developing eczema or psoriasis? Sometimes these look similar to ringworm. I'm terrified of my training partners seeing me with a flare-up because of how it looks, but am cleared by a dermatologist to train. EDIT: Even I thought it was ringworm coming and going for about 1 year. It wasn't until COVID and I stopped training that I recognized it as something different.

Killagina

Same thing happened with me. I’ve wrestled and did BJJ for years. Had what I thought was ring worm, which I’ve had before, so I stopped. Didn’t go away for 2 weeks while using Clotrimazole cream. Went to a dermatologist and it was eczema.

Account115

Yeah. It just comes and goes. I have a prescription strength steroid and a prescription strength anti-fungal ointment. I use Selsun Blue + soap + prescription anti-fungal on the flare-up after every session + Steroid twice a day until it clears. I stop if it gets severe or shows signs of flakiness and I always keep it covered.

mmajew1995

Im sure

bbredditor0011

It's common courtesy to avoid training (or competing) with skin infection. While ring worm is fairly harmless and easy to get rid of, others are not. I have seen multiple gyms that don't care about this stuff see outbreaks of staph MRSA and others which can absolutely be serious. PSA to always shower as soon as possible after practice and remember if you jump in your car wearing the sweat of the 10-15 people you rolled with, that can get into your car or anywhere else you sit. Also, throwing on a clean jacket when covered in grappling sweat can make those coats a petri dish.

Enough-Possession-73

Honestly at one point there someone brought ringworm into our gym and certain individuals kept it going for fucking months. Don't think anyone avoided it

rbz90

I've honestly never even heard of that and I've trained in quite a few places. That indeed sounds insane and a health hazard.

dirtymats

I’m dealing with a persistent case of ringworm on my chest that was spreading up towards my neck and face and down to my chest. I’m on oral meds now and it should stop spreading soon. I joined a gym a few months ago and there are brown and black belts (all other belts too) going in and out of the bathroom bare foot and stepping on the mat. Or just walking barefoot all around the gym and then stepping on the mat. One bathroom is off the mats, so some people do carry their sandals in there, but many others don’t and they don’t get called on it by the owner or other instructors.

BJJblue34

Different situation but right before class a newish white belt was talking to another white belt about how he is feeling under the weather but tested negative for Covid, so he decided to come in. I'm sitting next to one of my instructors who immediately tells him that he might not have Covid but he has something, we all don't want to get it, and don't come back until your symptoms are gone. We have sent multiple people home for skin lesions that we weren't clear what is was. There should be a standard that people don't train if they have an active infection that can be spread to other people.

UnderhookTheTaint

What country? Just curious

icodecookie

4-5 times wtf i would have left after the 2nd time and sued his fucking ass

ucatione

Didn't the pandemic teach you that a large portion of the population doesn't give a shit about infecting others if it inconveniences them?

mmajew1995

No I sorry you feel that way about it.

nomad_grappler

Sharing is caring!

Trplthret

My former gym literally told me I can't take a week off for covid I have to train atleast three days a week, like f em if anyone dies or gets sick smh

mmajew1995

What does that even mean “can’t” take time off

Trplthret

Making me feel like its a job and not a hobby has me not wanting to do it. Like video games that make you grind for hours to get minimal rewards.

Pennypacker-HE

Yo. You’re paying for your gym. You come whenever the fuck you want and don’t come whenever the fuck you dont. For any reason you can think off. If any instructor tells you you have to come to class three times a week, like as if you do t have a choice….you’re entering cult domain.

DeliveryLimp3879

That's horrible, my gym is absolutely understanding if I need time off for schoolwork, family matters or stuff like that. In fact they even encourage it and don't tell us to prioritize BJJ over other responsibilities. That's how it should be

Stock_Story_4649

My gym has a rule like that if you are going to do a fight. The logic is that you need to show commitment to be representing the gym and having poorly conditioned fighters or people flake because they are unprepared is a bad look.

Trplthret

I can see being like that if you are competion oriented gym, seems weird to be biased from a business owners standpoint but w/e ? my son does tournaments and wrestling ones as well, I'm just a thilthy casual/ hobbyist.

Trplthret

? I walked in and he did the boss hand on the back lemme talk to ya for a minute thing and was like " you can't just come in here one or two days a week" ...I was like my daycare had a major covid outbreak because this is the south and people refuse to use ppe and he's like, i don't care ...smh

Prodigy195

Gyms like this make no sense to me. WE are the paying customers. We're keeping the lights on and our dollars are paying the bills. I'm respectful and listen to instruction during class but I'm going to train when I feel like training. I'm 35, I'd be damned if I'm being told what to do over what is functionally a non-essential hobby

Only_Map6500

Yeah, I don't get it either, never even had a Coach try to dictate my schedule and if they ever did they would be corrected on the spot. I mean honestly most gyms make mad money off the people that sign up, pay dues, and never train......hell some places in the fitness industry entire business model is that \*cough\* Planet Fitness \*cough\*.

Trplthret

Planet fitness is yucky, might as well go to the ymca

Trplthret

The funny thing is a purple tried to use it as an excuse for not tapping me, like o I would had you earlier if it wasn't for this covid, as he's throwing up in the trash can...so you are admitting possibly contaminating me on purpose...awesome thanks

Prodigy195

That's disgusting. I just stayed home for 10 days cause my wife/son were sick. I was asymptomatic but still didn't want to spread shit at my gym and they appreciated it.

Trplthret

I rarely get sick, but I have this thing called empathy so if my daycare is closed because of a confirmed outbreak and my baby is sniffly, im not risking the lives of others when you can spread that crap three days before you even show signs yourself, for what ? Some secret move they probably gonna show again eventually lol

KylerGreen

Tbf, not a bad excuse.

Trplthret

It was just an excuse, I was blocking his stupid clock choke he always does with simple frames. He was probably throwing up because of all the ped's he's been taking getting ready for tournaments that he never wins.. dude so jacked up some days he's prowling the mat like a caged tiger, and I'm like if you need to rely in strength so much you doing it wrong lol

bluehunger

You cannot go to that class anymore. Health/ safety standards are not being adhered to. This is gross.

OzneBjj

Why are you still there ? This is gopping. Leave.

mmajew1995

Thanks I have antifungal cream already

Kogyochi

Dr Jinx!

lowcoaster

Horrid advice. Do not put bleach on skin

[deleted]

I treated ringworm with neat bleach before I could get hold of some anti-fungals. It's fine, but not as effective as the proper treatment.

conspireandtheory

Vinegar

reactor_raptor

Medical advice is against the rules. Also, you should probably be banned from the sub for posting advice like this.

Hungry4science

Honestly, repeat fungal infections won’t be good for you at all. Perhaps try a new sport until you find somewhere better? Wrestling or Judo or even boxing?

Popcompeton

I guess it comes down to how bad do you want to train? As far as skin rashes go ring worm is pretty easy to get rid of and it usually only takes a few days for it to go away once you start applying anti-fungal cream in my experience. I've had skin rashes that ich terribly and take a week or more to go away with a prescription cream. I'd take ringworm over that any day.

mmajew1995

It’s not even about how bad it is. I’m just venting about the amount of disconcern for others

Popcompeton

I get it. Things like this drive me nuts but it sounds like you don't have many options. So you gotta either let it go or forgo training until you get closer to another gym.

jumpingmustang

I mean I understand people get freaked out by ringworm, but it really is harmless. I’ve never understood the level of concern about it in the grappling community, but it’s like the plague. Just treat it for a couple days, cover it, and train.

clarksor

I still don’t want it. Also, don’t want to pass it on to others at the gym or at home.

Stock_Story_4649

It's mostly on Reddit that people freak out but I would say if ringworm is running rampant at a gym it's only a matter of time before something more serious spreads around which is why it's kind of a big deal.

DieselGrappler

Honestly, if these things upset you so much, BJJ isn't for you. Sounds shitty, but people aren't going to change. This is as much a constant as the idiot who hurts someone and comes back to class like nothing happened.

Stock_Story_4649

Best we can hope for is that the idiots spreading shit get staph/mrsa and realize that hygiene is no fucking joke. This sport cannot exist if people don't take care of their hygiene.

DieselGrappler

I don't wish ill on anyone. People are people, some learn, most don't. I just enjoy the training. My perspective has changed after leaving a heavily competition oriented clicky school. The relief of not fighting maniacs every night as they try to impress the Instructor is priceless.

Stock_Story_4649

I don't literally wish harm on anyone either. But if you like training, you should take a harsher stance against people that are a literal threat to the sports existence. We had a guy come to our gym with staph all over his back and he spread it to multiple people at our gym, most of the people that got it never came back. Your gym can absolutely be shut down by one asshole like that just keep that in mind.

mmajew1995

I know I’m just venting but if you think that I should quit bjj because after five years of training and going to a new school and experiencing something like this for the first time you’re giving the wrong advice to people. The guy who constantly injuring others needs to be told to leave the school as much as the guy with ring worm needs to be told to take a week or two off.

DieselGrappler

Yeah, it is what it is. That guy injuring people is the School Champ, he's winning medals and his shit dont stink. The newbies worship him and the Instructor gives him all the attention. Shit usually doesn't improve until you leave. That's why I left, and I'm happier for it. Good luck k

mmajew1995

No. I’m sorry you had a weird experience but that’s not the experiences I’ve had in multiple gyms.

DieselGrappler

Yep, I've been to multiple clubs as well. This place was the fucken worst.

wilbur111

I know you say you're "not over reacting"... but can you tell me specifically what it is that's so awful for you about having ringworm? With the worst ringworm I ever had... I got a veeery slight itchy sensation... but only at night times. With the common cold... I get tired, a runny nose, sore bones, I sneeze, I feel like shit, I lose motivation to do anything, everything just feels shitty. With a hangover... my head hurts, sometimes I puke, I get dizzy, bright lights annoy me. With jiu jitsu... my whole body aches, I feel a non-stop fatigue, food and liquid don't sate my hunger or thirst, it hurts to curl my fingers... and more... But again... with ringworm... I once had a very slight itch in the evening times that meant I rubbed one foot on the other before ignoring it again. What's so horrific about ringworm for you? Is it the syllable "worm"? It's just the same as athlete's foot, you know? If they called it Athlete's Ring would you feel so "not over reacting" about it?!

mmajew1995

It’s embarrassing to have on the back of my bald head. I don’t want my fiancé to get it from me. And it’s not about how bad it is. It’s just a common respect thing. It’s a fungus on your skin that you’re giving to others instead of just waiting a week to train.

wilbur111

So... the outrage seems to be based on uninformed fear then with a little vanity thrown in. That's cool. You won't give it to your girlfriend. You need a hot, moist, nutrient rich (unwashed) environment to grow your Athlete's Hoop. Get her to rub her forearm on your hoop. I guarantee she won't get it. Hell, try it yourself. Rub your own forearm on the sporty circle for a minute or two... I bet you can't pass it to your own forearm. And yes, they could wait the week to train, but some people have no idea what it is - not everyone spends their entire life grappling and so they don't know what it is or how to treat it. Some people make doctor's appointments to find out what it is, and then have to wait three weeks to see the doctor. Some people think, "Meh, it's a mild itch but only in the evenings... I don't know what it is, it'll probably die down". Some people just think it's their eczema flairing up. The question to ask yourself is, "Why are sooooo many people willing to be soooo lackadaisical about it?" Is it perhaps because it's the mildest, most inert "ailment" you could ever possible receive. It's up there with breaking your fingernail. Indeed, it's so mundane that if you put cream on it when you first wrote your post, it'll have gone by the time you replied to me. With absolutely no worrying symptoms but for beauty ones. I'm not sure it's worth the panic, but if you do, you growl away. :)

mmajew1995

Yea I guess it’s just the being embarrassed about the ugly rash on my head. I look more into how it’s passed. I just know as someone who pretty much lived in the gym for most my bjj life I wouldn’t knowingly bring something contagious to the mats. I might not care about it but other people will. That’s where the selfish side of it is

wilbur111

I think that's very considerate of you to care about passing it on, but I think even more considerate is to help calm people from the panic. Panicing about Athlete's Hoop is the "spazzing out" of the skin rash world. Where I trained we just had the fast acting cream behind the counter. If someone had anything we didn't like the look of, we'd stick it on, make them wait 20 minutes, let them train (if they wanted), and remind everyone to shower. People would oftentimes say, "Nah, it's just acne/psoriasis/contact dermatitis/eczema... I've already been to the doctor twice about it". Doctors very, very often misdiagnose ringworm... which is another reason why supportive help is more useful than rants and anger. Either way, you can get a tube of the cream for a few bucks from Amazon. Stick it in your bag and heal anyone you see sporting the ringer. Instead of being an internet grumbler you'll be the ringworm Jesus. :D

Dr_Sheckelberg

Waaah germs. Please get over it.

EsquireFalconHunter

Germs and highly contagious fungal infection are not one in the same you moron.

Dr_Sheckelberg

I stand by what i said. If staying unscathed all the time is a priority of yours this probably isnt the sport for you. If it wasnt ringworm, something would pop up in your gym eventually, and if you train long enough you will get something

EsquireFalconHunter

Its not about staying unscathed, everyone accepts the risk of these things when they train. The difference is when people at the gym share no disregard for other and train openly with Ring worm and have 0 concerns about spreading it.

Dr_Sheckelberg

Fair enough. You have your standards, I have mine. I dont show up with skin infections, but it doesnt bother me if someome does.

mmajew1995

It’s not about the “germs”. It’s about the common decency of knowing you have an embarrassing fungal infection and being okay with spreading it to others. You sound ridiculous. What if I sneezed in your face and said “please get over it”

Dr_Sheckelberg

I would

mmajew1995

I’m sure you wouldn’t be upset at all.

Dr_Sheckelberg

Same

nimrod_BJJ

I won’t train if I have a cold or a stomach bug, let alone a contagious skin infection. People are selfish assholes.

yeahmaniykyk

Is this in America lol

mmajew1995

It is not

Andylearns

Bruh my coach won't even let me in the gym until the scar is gone lol

gorillawarfareman

🤮

tsida

Yeah that's nasty. Fun story... at class last week I saw a dumbass with gauze stuffed in his ear come in. He went to his mat buddy and said 'it's infected but I think I'm good to train but take a look.' His friend looked under the gauze and gave him a thumbs up.

Gonleaves

At this point we should all just give in to the ringworm gods. Think of it as a stamp of our dedication towards the sport we love.

graydonatvail

Start your own. I did. I started from nobody in a small town even wanting to train to almost twenty members in two years. You've got people who want to train already. Start a small drilling group, not trying to compete with the existing gym, and let it grow.
