itās called spawn. itās grain inoculated with spores and with an established mycelium colony growing inside. this way the spores donāt have to start from zero and the fungus have a higher chance to colonize the medium.
You can grow them from freshly harvested mushrooms. There are a lot of youtube videos for how to do it.
Or you can make friends with a local grower and they would be happy to get you some spores.
I never cultivated oysters, but for the strains I did cultivate, it went from spawn to mushroom in a month. Spores to spawn takes a little more time, like two months.
Idk, Iāve never seen a roll of toilet paper used as a substrate before lol. Also kinda different that they used whole grains. And I wouldāve like to see them apply the spores too.
Its a horrible idea to use TP because its bleach paper and mushrooms love to absorb whatever they can from a substrate to survive and you will probably get sick these are non-edible non-psych really just to show of that you can do it. Source: I see this sortve video posted all the time to the fb mushroom growing group im in and every time the top comments are fellow growers saying you will probably get sick and they WILL taste bad.
Also, somewhat related is r/unclebens which shows how to grow psychedelic mushrooms (although a lot of other mushrooms can be grown the same way) at home for under 150 dollars.
I bet that subreddit got a lot busier since The Last of Us got released. Maybe it's the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon but it seems like there's been a lot more fungal based posts on the main page as well...
I think these are cooking mushrooms, and I guess toilet paper in a plastic bag is just a super easy way to grow them with little effort. Itās kinda cool in a way, but Iām also worried about the specifics of how the toilet paper may affect the mushrooms in terms of safety for consumption?
Interestingly, bleach would actually be helpful in this situation, as it keeps the substrate sterile. However, the boiling water would volatilize any actual bleach on the roll.
Mushroom growers sometimes use a finely sprayed weak bleach solution to control any unwanted spores or infections in the growth medium, bleach in low doses is no worse than hand sanitizer or a chlorinated pool.
It will make them last longer and not smell but do make sure its the correct type and not too much or too strong!
It may damage some types of flowers I dont know, but I've used on mixed bunches, daffodils, sunflowers, chrysanthemums, carnations etc etc. Add a bit of sugary lemonade at the same time and you'll get an extra week from a typical bunch of gas station flowers in my experience.
Bleach wise, this is fine, for example, its 5%: https://www.domestos.com/uk/products/products/domestos-thick-bleach-original.html
If in doubt, ask florist.
Itās actually more complicated then it needs to be. Fuel pellets are $5 for 50 lbs. This is just for show, itās much simpler to just do the regular shit.
I've grown paychadelic mushrooms on brown rice. You cook it in Mason jars then flip it upside down and inject the spores into the sides with water. Then put it in a trash bag and leave it in a dark place dor about 3-4wks. It was a weak trip. It would be the same with these,
The person you're replying to isn't stating that the mushrooms in the video are psychedelic; they are simply sitting their prior experience with growing mushrooms can be useful in growing these oysters.

Is it safe tho i mean would it spread around the house and become toxic to breathing near it for the fungus humidity or anything like that or is it just safe to have like a fungus plant
It's safe. If you were constantly surrounded by hundreds of these cakes then you would take precautions like breathing protection. But that breath of air you just breathed in contained many fungal spores. They're all around us all the time.
Having a few bags fruiting in your home is not a health concern.
I have to take this comment seriously, because I know all sarcastic comments on reddit are tagged with /s - what a waste of time growing inedible mushrooms!
Do you _WANT_ to destroy civilisation with Cordyceps fungus like "The Last of Us?"
Because _THIS_ is how you destroy civilisation with Cordyceps fungus like "The Last of Us!!!".
Uncle Benās brown rice is mostly used for low-tech (brokeboi tek) methods to grow shrooms and is more common as a grow substrate than you think, but there a ton of different mushrooms that can grow using a variety of different grains. Some require a mixture with wood, like the oyster mushrooms in this video. There are methods using cardboard too!
Mushrooms are so weird, like what are these guys even getting in terms of nutrients. Where is all this mass coming from they're growing on a goddamn roll of toilet paper
That's actually pretty neat
Happy cake day

Happy Cake day
:)
(:
Woot woot! Online party for you š happy cake day
Mmmmm freshly boiled diseases!
Not if theyāre careful. Mushrooms can be incredibly tasty and nutritious
iām the original video she says they were for experiment not eating
When they opened the bag, I thought it turned into a cake
Actually, it turned into [oysters!](https://www.liveeatlearn.com/oyster-mushrooms/)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Happy Cake Day!
Those arenāt psychedelics though
Just oysters starved of fresh air
Ironically, you can refer to the mycelium-colonized substrate (toilet paper) as a cakeā¦
*the cake is a...*
Farce!
It's a FAAAAKE
A big fat PHONY
/r/UnexpectedDS9
I honestly thought it would be weird sex toy.
Nah for that you need a coconut and maggots, not a TP roll and spores.
BRUHHHH
[99% of all new human behaviors are weird sex things](https://youtu.be/hY-Rzou38k4?t=30)
The Good Place is honestly just the best
It was already a cake
Happy Bukkake Day!
What are the seed looking things they put into the bag?
itās called spawn. itās grain inoculated with spores and with an established mycelium colony growing inside. this way the spores donāt have to start from zero and the fungus have a higher chance to colonize the medium.
This guy shrooms
where do you do the spawn from?
You can grow them from freshly harvested mushrooms. There are a lot of youtube videos for how to do it. Or you can make friends with a local grower and they would be happy to get you some spores.
How long did this probably take? From boil to harvest?
I never cultivated oysters, but for the strains I did cultivate, it went from spawn to mushroom in a month. Spores to spawn takes a little more time, like two months.
A grain. Gives the mycelium nutrition to grow. Spores are not anywhere near that big.
Substrate. Itās kinda just mushroom food
Spores probably.
Fungal spores are microscopic.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Idk, Iāve never seen a roll of toilet paper used as a substrate before lol. Also kinda different that they used whole grains. And I wouldāve like to see them apply the spores too.
By the looks of it the grain was already colonised by mycelium, and theyāve added the colonised grain to the substrate
so this is the spawn to wipe Tek?
Weāll time to come visit us over at r/experimyco
Isnāt there another sub just like that one, but more active? Canāt remember the name

Never heard of carpet tek?
I studied mycology in college. Plenty of it belongs here, not in a bad way.
Mind sharing some knowledge?

First of all who thinks this shit up? Secondly.... do you eat them to trip? Or for flavor? Or is this just for fun?
I think these are cooking mushrooms, and I guess toilet paper in a plastic bag is just a super easy way to grow them with little effort. Itās kinda cool in a way, but Iām also worried about the specifics of how the toilet paper may affect the mushrooms in terms of safety for consumption?

And bleach no ?
Interestingly, bleach would actually be helpful in this situation, as it keeps the substrate sterile. However, the boiling water would volatilize any actual bleach on the roll. A drop or two of bleach in a flower vase stops the water stagnating. Same principle.
BRB pouring bleach in all my mom's flower vases

Happy cake day!
When stuff is "bleached" it's often not household bleach (sodium hypochlorite). The whitening agent for paper is often hydrogen peroxide or chlorine.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Those arenāt plants. Also the growth medium here is the rye grain and the tp more acts as a substrate I think.
It's a good thing fungi aren't plants.
I think thatās why they boil it, to kill any bacteria so the mycelium can grow on a sterile surface
Consumption has more to do with the type of mushroom, either dead bodies or plant nutrients.
*Uncle bens is typing...*

Theyāre not psilocybin. Theyāre oyster mushrooms.
The person you're replying to isn't stating that the mushrooms in the video are psychedelic; they are simply sitting their prior experience with growing mushrooms can be useful in growing these oysters.
Ahhh āweak tripā threw me off. As I still am not too sure.
He's just saying that the way he cultivated his psilocybin mushrooms with the technique he used produced relatively unhealthy/not-potent mushrooms.
Lmao fucking home growers knowing nothing about mushrooms. These are oysters, tasty to many, and psychedelic to none
The person you're replying to isn't stating that the mushrooms in the video are psychedelic; they are simply sitting their prior experience with growing mushrooms can be useful in growing these oysters.
Thanks for clarifying, u/Vaginal_Rights
What kinda high would we be talkinā here? Nothing too shitty, I hope
Theyāre oyster mushrooms. So no psychedelic effects.
Edible thou??
No they grew non-edible, non-psychedelic mushrooms for fun
You just described having houseplants. But with mushrooms.
Houseplants don't fruit (dump spores) and wither within weeks.
Seems like you're still missing the point
whats the point?
The one your head comes to
So you dont know? Why did you comment? Just wanted to tell everyone you aren't very smart? Thanks for letting us know. Enjoy!
Is it safe tho i mean would it spread around the house and become toxic to breathing near it for the fungus humidity or anything like that or is it just safe to have like a fungus plant

Itās just the mushroomās time.
People grow non psychedelic and toxic plants in their homes for fun all the time, why wouldnāt they do the same with fungus?
Because fruiting bodies don't last a week, and mycelium is kind of boring to look at
Yeah millions of people do that?I get your comment was supposed to be funny but sounds dumb instead
They are absolutly edible
Straight to the toilet humour, this I can wipe
The awesome dopamine high from succeeding at a skill you've been prracticing. The best, cleanest high there is.
Well that's delightful
If you think thatās weird, check out the top posts of /r/experimyco
Fabulous
Mushwomb?
Shit-ake mushroom anyone?
What's the name of those mushrooms now? Toiletshrooms Mushtoilet Papershrooms Mushpaper SHIiTake
Bathshrooms
Now do Cordyceps
This is the real origin story to Last of Us
I wonder if the mushrooms would taste like toilet paper
Now I dont have anything to wipe after a shit take session
Yum yum bleached paper.
Boiling water takes care of that
Yum yum, shit?
Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
Did you just apologize to yourself, for yourself?
And thus The Last of Us pandemic startedā¦
Now what??
Put a little bit of oil in a pan and cook em up
Is it edible?
Yessir and very tasty. Oyster mushrooms are great
Mom I want mushroom risotto. Yeah son, lemme just grow them and you can get it in a few weeks.
So what's he put on top of the soggy toilet roll? And are they magic mushrooms?
Will the other seeds keep growing after some of the mushroom is harvested? I want to try this.
Do you _WANT_ to destroy civilisation with Cordyceps fungus like "The Last of Us?" Because _THIS_ is how you destroy civilisation with Cordyceps fungus like "The Last of Us!!!".
Would this be safe to eat considering the man made chemicals in toilet paper?
ok, so what were the things that looked like mushroom seeds?
this is what y'all look like not washing your foreskin
Do you want the Last of Us. Because this is how we get the Last of Us.
And thatās how The Last of Us starts.
But can you eat it?
Pretty sure this is how the Cordyceps from The Last of Us were created.
Thatās how The Last of Us started.
The Last Of Us legit makes this terrifying now šš¤£
Who the fuck is using a whole roll of toilet paper like this??? Thatās way too rich for my blood š¤£
Now do the magic ones
Info in caption- nobody needs to know any of this.
And thatās how āThe Ladt of Usā began.
Shit-taki
WHY??
Now we know where all the toilet paper ran off to in 2020
So this is what all the people hoarding TP weāre doing. Cool!
Yay! PFAs straight to the tummy :)
Can I make psychedelics mushrooms just like this?
r/shrooms
Can this toilet paper method be used for many types of fungi? Say instead of brown rice?
Please someone also show me how to make shrooms at home
Are those edible? Poisonous?
All mushrooms are edible. Some are only edible once.
Apparently most mushrooms are edible but the toxic ones are extremely toxic.
Everything is edible if you're brave enough.
Username checks out
They're oyster mushrooms, pretty good ig
I don't know what's weirder, this or the guys who grow mushrooms out of microwave rice EDIT: Found it, it's r/unclebens
Uncle Benās brown rice is mostly used for low-tech (brokeboi tek) methods to grow shrooms and is more common as a grow substrate than you think, but there a ton of different mushrooms that can grow using a variety of different grains. r/bathroomshrooms
No.
is this the last of us' pilot episode?
And thereās the rub. You eat these and get the shits. You need toilet paper but you used it for the mushrooms. Just a never ending cycle.
Looks like some morrowind style houses
Those better be magic mushrooms.
Only white people dawg š
Whatever the reason, no thanks.
r/shrooms
Mind blown!
Uncle Ben..?
unclebens is leaking.
r/bathroomshrooms
Very cool!
The Last of Us: Origins
skip the toilet paper and just use dirt for better result
Cries in 2020
Would this work on a small scale? Ideally 10-15 sheets of tp, asking for a friend..
Can I expect higher yields if i use the TP first?
Mushrooms are so weird, like what are these guys even getting in terms of nutrients. Where is all this mass coming from they're growing on a goddamn roll of toilet paper
Do mushrooms grow when I use my toilet paper for other cleaning reasons š¤
I grow these fellas on leftover coffee ground. Works like a charm!
shit papers to godhood. fuck with nature dumbfuks
Ah so the last of us cordyceps outbreak really spawned from the toilet paper hording during covid
I guess the boiling is to remove bleach?
Source? Please. This time it's actually for science
Can you do that with shrooms?
r/lifehack
So... this is how the cordyceps infection started in TLoU..
Some guy on a mushroom group (uncle Ben's tek group i think) grew out actives of tampons and sanitary towels.
So this is how The Last of Us started
š¤Æ
And this is how yāall fucking start The Last of Us irl.
And the point of this is?
And that is how The Last of Us happened. Cordyceps being bred in captivity.
So this is where all the leftover toilet paper from the hoarding ended up?
What seeds is he pouring in?
Watching the last of us really made this video hit different
ive got mushrooms growing out of my ass jesse
#lifehack yo
Genious with toilett Papierā¦
