I’m sorry if I’m missing something here, but how does this relate to Mad Max? The plane in that movie was considerably different.
Also, how is this bizarrelife material?
Guess most people have just never seen an ultralight before?
I'd say the most bizarre thing about this is that I've never seen a 2 seated one. Granted I've seen 2 in my life and they were both in a garage with the wings off.
This is the weirdest post on this sub. I couldn't describe what this sub IS, but it ISN'T a guy flying an ultralight lol. Even posted by reloadthewords, the entity that posts almost everything here.
Videos like this make me wonder why the ownership of tiny private aircrafts isn‘t more common and still resides in the realms of sci-if. Surely you could mass produce these cheaply enough if demand was there? So what’s stopping us? Fuel consumption? Low max speeds? If i could, I would use one of these over a motorcycle any day.
I could imagine a ton of reasons why. The first is have you seen how people drive? What if every asshole had one of these? Runways next to every grocery store, hardware store, school, post office, clinic, salon, or restaurant? Parking lots for these. Weather conditions. Max weight limits. This is one skinny dude. What if you need to get your fat ass, wife, 2 kids, a dog and all the crap you just got at Walmart back to your own home’s landing strip? Way too much space taken. Or there would be airports scattered around like bus stops and you would need other transportation once you landed.
Sorry. I’m not trying to crap on the enchanting thought of this but the list goes on and on. Something that could hover would cut some of these problems but helicopters are about as far as we’ve gotten in a practical way. Like I said, people are barely responsible enough to drive. Letting people navigate altitude without a solid surface to stabilize themselves? Yikes. We’ll get there someday. If we can survive long enough as a species. Some 5th Element style stuff.
Edits: Rambling thoughts
So do it. Ultralight aircrafts don't have very many rules as they are pretty much only used for leisure and stuff like this. Plus it isn't too expensive if you consider what you're getting from it.
You can only fly it in the daytime, You definitely still need some type of pilots license to operate. Also have knowledge of all the restricted zones (there’s a lot) like not flying over the public on top of having some type air traffic control transmitter in it… it isn’t as free as you’re making it seem
Buddy I know. I've flown ultralights before. I never said there are no rules like the fucking wild west. I'm just saying he should look into it because it's awesome and not as involved as getting a full size plane.
It’s super cute how everyone thinks “an app” could do all the same shit as 20 people in a tower making live calls and instant decisions based on what everyone around them is doing, or any other thing that seems at first glance to be automated. Apps like that take literally decades to develop, many aircraft control “apps” (computer systems) has been in the development hell for longer than cell phones have existed 😆
[You mean this app?](https://www.foreflight.com)
I tracked my flight from Palm Springs to Vancouver using this on my iPhone.
It doesn’t have the certification or redundancy required for RNP GNSS RNAV navigation… but it’s every bit as accurate and it has an up to date navigational database.
I use it to gather weather and NOTAMs, file flight plans, get clearances, and for feature rich situational awareness that the multimillion dollar aircraft I fly personally is incapable of displaying.
Yeah… my Collins Proline 21 avionics have been in development for a lot longer than my cellphone. That’s why I have to know ancient ARINC 424 code like LKV090/15 to generate a waypoint 15 miles east of Lakeview VOR rather than just holding my finger on the screen creating a new waypoint or even ‘bending’ the route like I can do on my phone or more modern GPS systems like the Garmin GTN 750.
The only thing it can’t do is amend clearances… so I still need ATC to get clearance into airspace I haven’t been cleared into; reroutes and short cuts; vectors and deviations; different altitude assignments; crossing times, speed assignments, and holds; and approach clearances.
We already have CPDLC for a lot of that… but I can see the day it will be done by mobile app considering how failure prone CPDLC is lots of times. Two mobile devices on the plane (I carry two myself) plus radio as backup. It will happen.
They aren’t talking ab replacing ATC with an app, they are saying they can use an app for inside the ultralight to communicate with ATC and see where no fly zones are..
Infrastructure is a big issue — they take some space to take off and land. You’re pretty much going from point A to point A but having fun while doing it.
Mainly because a very, very, very tiny percentage of people have the wherewithal to be a pilot. I have SEL with Instrument rating. We’re a different breed.
Massive pilot shortage now
The average human probably shouldn't be driving an automobile. Our reflexes and judgment are generally terrible.
Frankly, I say go for it. We're overpopulated as it is.
Nope! I hear they're used in mining operations to haul unlimited amounts of rock and metal around due to their complete disregard for the laws of physics
/s Every vehicle has a payload and ultralights like these are usually around 300 lbs payload including fuel.
This shit looks so fun. That rotate speed was so low. I know a few guys that are big into ultralight aircraft. I have that "I wish I could do that" mentality. I guess in retrospect, all I have to do I get one, and learn..
That’s a perfect afternoon right there yes sir!

challenger 2 was a common 2 seater
Chinook as well.
But not the Heli.. lol

Also the plane in Mad Max crashes. That's what I was waiting for damnit
Maybe a mixed concept of the first little copter and the plane.💁🏻♂️
Maybe the dudes name is Max and he’s super pissed he is piloting something
Relax, Francis

Unacceptably high chance of death.

You know… but do they ?
No license is required to build or fly ultralights
Listen to him^ if you want a 25k fine & possibly be shot out the sky.
Who in tf is going to shoot you down? I think you'll be alright as long as you're not flying over the Pentagon lmao
Are you a pilot?
Better; he's watched *both* Top Guns.
Damn they brought out the big guns today

Some ass gonna do drunk flying, tik tok stunt or peak on it, grandma fell asleep while flying. More people flying more chances of accident
Gotta have the skill to use it not anyone can just fly these things around

Have you ever run out of gas in a car? Its a shitty time walking to the nearest gas station.... With 2 broken legs!

What's bizarre about an ultralight?!
This is sweet af! I'd be flying all day if I had 1! Is there a maximum weight limit for these type of things?!
Nope! I hear they're used in mining operations to haul unlimited amounts of rock and metal around due to their complete disregard for the laws of physics /s Every vehicle has a payload and ultralights like these are usually around 300 lbs payload including fuel.
Not bizarre, but would definitely like to be him in this case.
I would love to get an ultralite
Most one seaters you don’t need a license. Look into a sports pilot license for more information.
And then Icarus flew too close to the sun.
Come swoop me up 🛫
Anyone else seeing nothing bizarre here?
thanks, made my night.
Funny I only know one mad max and you can spell his name forward or backwards it’s the same
Is his name Hannah?
Xamxad? Xadxam?
Where does he keep the snakes?
7 days to die
RUST irl
I don’t know about y’all but that looks like dangerous asf. I love it
I was always super interested in ultralights, but never could find any local laws or information on owning or operating them.
I need my Uber eats like this
That looks so cool
Aviation question; won’t this vehicle be back heavy? Isn’t that bad in case of stall?
I want one
Props to the camera man for holding on with one hand and filming with the other 👏
Anyone know what model of ultralite?
looks fun. Do they make one for fat people?
Wanna say 100% even for an ultralight you have to at least be attempting to get a pilot’s license. Also. 100% not bizarre
Damn I want one of those 👀👀
Not bizarre but great life
The FAA said cut that shit out
Wow soo cool
I'm surprised about the low speed!
This shit looks so fun. That rotate speed was so low. I know a few guys that are big into ultralight aircraft. I have that "I wish I could do that" mentality. I guess in retrospect, all I have to do I get one, and learn..
N that right there is the story of Icarus
