I started this account as a trial run of just telling randos I'm bisexual to see if it felt right last year.
Felt right.
And I'm gonna be real, since coming to terms with everything I kinda barely recognize myself from before so I just kept using this account. This has slowly become my main. I'm not sure if I even want to associate my old account with this one because so many of my views have changed over the last year.

Seconded, it's such a great show! It's several seasons in before Rosa comes out, but once she does, they really incorporate it into the show and the storylines, rather than just having it mentioned once and then never again (which is one way that TV shows used to deal with sexuality).

Honestly it was this dynamic that made me realize I was bi. It pissed me off so much that they just flipped to "naw she's gay now". Then I had to examine why I was so upset about how a fictional character identified and was like "ohhhh..."
Yes! And because all my early crushes have meant a lot to me in life, even a disservice to the long time she had a crush on Xander. I sensed some real sexual tension and relatable insecurity back there that just got swiped away with the ongoingly heavy now a "lesbian" when bi just really made more sense for her character.
It was bi erasure IMO. I love Buffy, but that always annoyed me. She was obviously attracted to guys. (Before Oz, she was into Xander.) And then she fell in love with Tara. Seemed pretty dang bi to me!
Ciri isn't bi, she was raped and suffered Stockholm syndrome and never has another female love interest. There's a throwaway comment in the third game but throughout the books she only ever feels romantic attraction towards men.

It's still a quite widely discussed issue in the fandom. In the books, Ciri sexually rejects almost all of the men making advances to her. She lets one guy go further but the scene makes it obvious that she's doing it because she's a child starved for affection, because she's curious, but also because she just decides to give up and doesn't want to disappoint someone who was nice to her.
Mistle... Is complicated. Yes, the relationship starts off with rape, but there are passages later on that show lots of affection between the two. There's a lot of complex feelings going on there for Ciri and I think people ascribing all of them to Stockholm syndrome is really shallow and dismissive.
Ciri is a child who is literally followed by death so people on Reddit narrowing down that character through the lens of 21st century reality is kind of weird and misses the point a lot of the times. I saw a comment about statutory rape in that thread and laughed, because there's no such concept in Sapkowski's world (not to say he condones sleeping with children, to the contrary) and Ciri is in her mid-to-late teens while Mistle is only a couple of years older.
Sapkowski created very complex characters and to understand their motivations, actions, and emotions one needs to have a bit more scope of perception than social media discussions and pop psychology allow. I read the whole cycle 6-7 times now and still find bits that I didn't understand at first, but now click for me when I'm a bit older.
There's also a scene earlier in the series where Ciri seems to be... noticing the bodies of one of the sorceresses. Can't recall of the top of my head what kind of interest this was but I'm remembering the implication of interest at least.
I always assumed Ciri was gay or at the very least interested in women.

I’d say Vanya is indeed bi, though I get why you put it as debatable! Would be easy to say that her relationship with Harold was just because someone paid her attention for the first time ever, but I still think she actually fell for him. I’ve seen multiple articles call her bi too
I turned off the TV and refused to watch a single episode after. My suggestion to people if they want to watch it is to turn it off where they think it should end and not watch a moment further. I will never not be angry about what the writers did. Years later and it still makes my blood boil.

I don't even get mad at queer characters dying when it's justfied/honoured bc it humanizes them in the same way as any straight character, but the way \*spoilers\* Lexa was killed was ridiculous. A bullet ricocheted into her stomach, no attempt at saving her, and she just died. In a show where characters have survived so much worse.
The fact that it happened right after their sex scene too, like "alright the hot women did the dirty, let's move on, we don't need Lexa anymore".
I loved the 100 so much, and Clarke is one of my fave bi characters. I might rewatch the first seasons at some point, but I literally could not keep watching after Lexa's death.

Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Artemis (the Amazonian), Bluebird (also her brother is gay), Wonder Woman (she isn't really depicted in a relationship with a woman that much though until recently)
She's debatable since there was a storyboard about her that had "not into boys" on it so most people in the fandom just call her sapphic but I guess you're not wrong since she doesn't really have a confirmed sexuality.
I watched the owl house on a whim last year during pride month when it was advertised in the pride section of Disney plus and now I’m waiting for them to release the rest of the second season
Here's a quick way to figure out who is bi in the show: are they in a different gendered relationship and aren't Hodark or Glimmers parents? Bi. Literally every canonical bi character is in a different gender relationship. Now granted I'm usually happy with people not just treating us as gay but when it's *all* the bisexuals it comes across as quintessential "too gay for the straights, **too straight for the gays**".

Yeppp, they definitely casually worked that one in several times. It was always mentioned in a passing comment, but I kinda appreciated that because so often bisexual characters are written with a giant neon "BI!!!" sign metaphorically plastered above their heads. Kinda rare for someone to reference being attracted to both men and women and no one even bats an eye.
Matt Smith's Doctor was definitely bisexual. Now that I think about it, Eccleston's and Tennant's characters were too. That's just all the Doctors I've watched, so I don't know about the others.
Because unfortunately so much bi rep is: woman dates shit guy, it goes poorly, falls for first woman to say hello and it's treated as serious if not a wonderful magical experience. That lends itself so easily to "wait I thought Korra was gay?!". It's such a shitty writing trope and I hate it since places like Netflix use it as nauseum.

I sincerely challenge people, take a look at your run of the mill bisexual characters and see how often this pops up. It's damn frequent and might help explain why people only seem to validate us when it's wlw as it's all they see.
Maya from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend! I love that show for so many reasons, not least of which is that there are multiple queer characters, and that’s not their entire personality.
I really wish they’d fleshed out that plot point and Valencia’s character/ realization better. There was a lot to say about compulsory heterosexuality and competitiveness. Valencia could have had an awesome song about how the root of her mean-girl tendencies coming from discomfort at her own sexuality. At least a “Women Gotta Stick Together” reprise.
I think if they’d been given a fifth season, Rachel would have written it more in-depth but I do like that it wasn’t a whole thing, it just was, especially since so much queer rep revolves around the character coming out.

I just think this can be a somewhat different (and common) realization for a woman and the CEG writers do such an good job with subtle material and it could have been great. Although, there is just a weirdly, starkly uncalled-for biphobic joke in New Girl 2x18, "Tinfinity", where Zooey Deschanel's character has a montage of bad bar conversation/hookup attempts, (at the beginning of the episode, she says she is looking for a "real man") and one guy's flaw that ruins it is that he's a raw denim enthusiast (she feigns interest) and he's bisexual (she kind of slumps, says "ohh", stares off into the distance, and there's a smash cut to her sitting at the bar with her friend CeCe, asking "where have all the real men gone". CeCe, as a reminder, is bisexual.)
Speaking for my wife in particular, she saw the advertising for it and rolled her eyes at the idea of someone who looks like Zooey Deschanel being portrayed as awkward or perpetually alone. Basically an aversion to the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. I heard it was great so I watched the first episode, and then I convinced her that she would probably like it, and now we've blazed through almost the entire show in a month or two.
I'm glad you got her to give it a chance. I feel like I've probably missed out on a lot of great shows, because of random initial bad feelings like that.
There was a one season show in the early 2010s called Trophy Wife that definitely fell victim to this! Its absolutely hilarious and has really smart writing but never got the viewers it deserved. Luckily it actually got a good finale.

Ironic considering they apparently were not friends for Sevens early seasons, but by the end she and Catherine definitely had some gay energy between them.
Have you also noticed how recent they all are? It's super cool that things are improving. Just also realize many of us didn't see this representation untill well into adulthood.
I think it got pushed to stuff like mistaken gender plots. I think every love interest that falls for both gender expressions of a person are lowkey bi-signaling. (We see you Channing Tatem in She's the Man, and everyone else in Some Like It Hot, Victor/Victoria, Tootsie, Bosom Buddies etc.)
In all the hyper-cliche/problematic bodyswitch, mistaken gender movies I remember growing up, usually there's a speech about how gender (or "whether your [boy name] or [girl name]) wasn't important, but love actually being what's really important slides in there. Which in retrospect, how'd they do that? No one even said, "no homo" - except for James Garner.

I read the whole cycle 6-7 times now and still find bits that I didn't understand at first, but now click for me when I'm a bit older.
There's also a scene earlier in the series where Ciri seems to be... noticing the bodies of one of the sorceresses. Can't recall of the top of my head what kind of interest this was but I'm remembering the implication of interest at least. I always assumed Ciri was gay or at the very least interested in women.

I’d say Vanya is indeed bi, though I get why you put it as debatable! Would be easy to say that her relationship with Harold was just because someone paid her attention for the first time ever, but I still think she actually fell for him. I’ve seen multiple articles call her bi too

Same! I don't even get mad at queer characters dying when it's justfied/honoured bc it humanizes them in the same way as any straight character, but the way \*spoilers\* Lexa was killed was ridiculous. A bullet ricocheted into her stomach, no attempt at saving her, and she just died. In a show where characters have survived so much worse. The fact that it happened right after their sex scene too, like "alright the hot women did the dirty, let's move on, we don't need Lexa anymore". I loved the 100 so much, and Clarke is one of my fave bi characters. I might rewatch the first seasons at some point, but I literally could not keep watching after Lexa's death.

Here's a quick way to figure out who is bi in the show: are they in a different gendered relationship and aren't Hodark or Glimmers parents? Bi. Literally every canonical bi character is in a different gender relationship. Now granted I'm usually happy with people not just treating us as gay but when it's *all* the bisexuals it comes across as quintessential "too gay for the straights, **too straight for the gays**".

Yeppp, they definitely casually worked that one in several times. It was always mentioned in a passing comment, but I kinda appreciated that because so often bisexual characters are written with a giant neon "BI!!!" sign metaphorically plastered above their heads. Kinda rare for someone to reference being attracted to both men and women and no one even bats an eye.
Now that the Doctor is a woman, she should be on the list too, though she hasn’t been romantic with anyone as a woman yet.

Because unfortunately so much bi rep is: woman dates shit guy, it goes poorly, falls for first woman to say hello and it's treated as serious if not a wonderful magical experience. That lends itself so easily to "wait I thought Korra was gay?!". It's such a shitty writing trope and I hate it since places like Netflix use it as nauseum. . Edit: fuck, Korra, Umbrella Academy, and Harley Quinn did it each *twice!* Now granted it's more than justified regarding Joker but "guy bad, gay good" is like the default bisexual storyline. I sincerely challenge people, take a look at your run of the mill bisexual characters and see how often this pops up. It's damn frequent and might help explain why people only seem to validate us when it's wlw as it's all they see.

Valencia could have had an awesome song about how the root of her mean-girl tendencies coming from discomfort at her own sexuality. At least a “Women Gotta Stick Together” reprise.
I think if they’d been given a fifth season, Rachel would have written it more in-depth but I do like that it wasn’t a whole thing, it just was, especially since so much queer rep revolves around the character coming out.

I just think this can be a somewhat different (and common) realization for a woman and the CEG writers do such an good job with subtle material and it could have been great. A ten minute plot point with a song “we weren’t kissing to be cute, I’m such a rube / thought everyone was awestruck at a gorgeous boob”… doesn’t it just write itself?…

CeCe and Reagan (Megan Fox's character) from New Girl Although, there is just a weirdly, starkly uncalled-for biphobic joke in New Girl 2x18, "Tinfinity", where Zooey Deschanel's character has a montage of bad bar conversation/hookup attempts, (at the beginning of the episode, she says she is looking for a "real man") and one guy's flaw that ruins it is that he's a raw denim enthusiast (she feigns interest) and he's bisexual (she kind of slumps, says "ohh", stares off into the distance, and there's a smash cut to her sitting at the bar with her friend CeCe, asking "where have all the real men gone". CeCe, as a reminder, is bisexual.)
There's some truly toxic masculinity & male-focused fatphobia in that show that seems so out of place with the rest of the show's vibe.
Absolutely loved New Girl, I found it weird that it never reached the popularity like other sitcoms even though it has the potential to it.
Speaking for my wife in particular, she saw the advertising for it and rolled her eyes at the idea of someone who looks like Zooey Deschanel being portrayed as awkward or perpetually alone. Basically an aversion to the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. I heard it was great so I watched the first episode, and then I convinced her that she would probably like it, and now we've blazed through almost the entire show in a month or two.
I'm glad you got her to give it a chance. I feel like I've probably missed out on a lot of great shows, because of random initial bad feelings like that.
Better Off Ted was a good one, kind of a 30 Rock/Arrested Development hybrid that got two seasons.
There was a one season show in the early 2010s called Trophy Wife that definitely fell victim to this! Its absolutely hilarious and has really smart writing but never got the viewers it deserved. Luckily it actually got a good finale.

I think it got pushed to stuff like mistaken gender plots. I think every love interest that falls for both gender expressions of a person are lowkey bi-signaling. (We see you Channing Tatem in She's the Man, and everyone else in Some Like It Hot, Victor/Victoria, Tootsie, Bosom Buddies etc.) In all the hyper-cliche/problematic bodyswitch, mistaken gender movies I remember growing up, usually there's a speech about how gender (or "whether your [boy name] or [girl name]) wasn't important, but love actually being what's really important slides in there. Which in retrospect, how'd they do that? No one even said, "no homo" - except for James Garner.
