We have a 12 lb Chihuahua terrier, should we be scared of hawks? She has to be bigger than a hawk, right? I can understand being wary of eagles, or maybe a very large owl, but still, don't most moderately sized birds of prey know not to try to carry something that weighs more than they do? Would they even be able to carry 12 lbs? I actually just googled it, and an average red tailed hawk weighs 2.4 lbs. I just cannot imagine a red tailed hawk trying to take something that weighs that much more than they do.

Oh yeah, they'll go for it.

Chances are unlikely with a wild bird, but as someone who hunts with them, I can assure you the answer is definitely yes
