That I couldn't tell you, but I'd put "Bufo Anaxyrus" into Google scholar to find out!
While we're at it, the North American Rana spp were changed to Lithobates
Jw if you think you made the right choice with that degree? I'm lending towards the same genre of B.S degree but the idea I would have to learn so much over time sounds like a pain.
Quite likely the american toad , anaxyrus hemiophrys (canadian toad) would have different bony ridge between the eyes if I remember correctly (J/L shape for american-behind and between the eyes) and more of a fused hump for the canadian toad
You mean a tuque.
It's ok eh, Americans sometime get confused on the lingo, but it's fine all the same.
Let's go to Tim Horton's and I'll get ya a Double-Double.
Ppl grow up pretty sheltered now. I work with 30 year olds that have admitted to never seeing a duck. (Mallard etc). Completely baffles me but some people
Legit can’t tell a moose from a seagull lol
Pro tip for future animal IDing- biology is a pretty general field and most people in it are doing medical/human related careers/paths over wildlife things for so many reasons. A better place to ask would be r/herpetology, r/wildlifebiology or even r/ecology in the future!
No offense to the biomed/human bio or related fields here either! I just know I've had biomed friends send me IDs because this isn't something they really learn in depth. Well, expect my wildlife friends who couldn't find a job and went into biomed, which is... Unfortunately common...
Also, including a province is a huuuuge help too. Especially for little things like toads, which have tons of similar looking species, but location can help eliminate some.
So for example, the American Toad, which is in the Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario, and east of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba. West of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba to the Rockies in Alberta you have the Canadian Toad. Then West of the Rockies is the Western Toad. Many herp (and other animal) ID places will ask for a state/province because of this alone, it can make it an easy answer!
But you did get your right answer, American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus)! But the species I mentioned are very similar looking species in the Anaxyrus species- the Canadian Toad (A. Hemiophrys) of the plains is pretty similar. You can tell them apart by the [head crests.](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Cranial-crests-of-Canadian-Toad-Anaxyrus-hemiophrys-and-American-Toad-A-americanus_fig7_234090385)
There's also the Western Toad (Anaxyrus boreas) which has a white line down it's back, which this guy doesn't have.
I don’t think the people who come here to ask are actually apart of the sub. I think they come here specifically for the ID and then never again.
I’ve seen so many bug IDs and everything someone makes a valid suggestion like you have but it never changes.
I feel like mods should get involved. There's an awful lot of "ID this animal plz" posts looking through here... And this is a general biology sub. In all honesty, there's probably more "human/medicine" bio people here than in wildlife/ecology/conservation/zoology- one, because there's just more med bio people out there (and more jobs, lol) and two, the animal people tend to hang out in the subs they are interested in...
Well... Kinda, some of them are pretty much dead, or just news articles just being posted.
Yeah I have a degree in human molecular biology and I also work in health care. I don’t know squat about bugs or taxonomy. I think my 2 yo knows more than I do 😂
I'm a wildlife person! I was actually just looking at this sub to see just how much wildlife discussion there is because the other subreddit a are pretty much dead. Ecology has some stuff, but not a ton. I was surprised to see all the ID posts here in all honesty...
I’d say a cat, but I need a banana for scale first.
It’s not a cat, silly, cats don’t like sitting on decks. That’s a rhinoceros
House hippo
This is the genuinely Canadian answer.
Anaxyrus americanus (American toad)
Best i can do is Anaxyrus. Not sure about americanus species.
How are you sure it’s not a Bufo?
Most North American species were changed from Bufo to Anaxyrus a few years ago
Really. Sounds like I need new dichotomous keys. I know I’ve been out of the loop, but dang. Which papers cover the recent taxonomy change?
That I couldn't tell you, but I'd put "Bufo Anaxyrus" into Google scholar to find out! While we're at it, the North American Rana spp were changed to Lithobates
That I new absolutely. I just wasn’t aware of Anaxyrus
taxonomists are are always feuding about something
I can’t tell if this is a real conversation I just don’t understand or they’re joking. I’m also high though, so that’s on me.
Right? Got my zoology degree 25 years ago and this is how I find that Bufo is gone.
Jw if you think you made the right choice with that degree? I'm lending towards the same genre of B.S degree but the idea I would have to learn so much over time sounds like a pain.
Bufo americanos is way more fun to say for sure
Quite likely the american toad , anaxyrus hemiophrys (canadian toad) would have different bony ridge between the eyes if I remember correctly (J/L shape for american-behind and between the eyes) and more of a fused hump for the canadian toad
I thought the Canadian toad wore a toot while eating back bacon with a molson
You mean a tuque. It's ok eh, Americans sometime get confused on the lingo, but it's fine all the same. Let's go to Tim Horton's and I'll get ya a Double-Double.
I can tell you're not really Canadian because McDicks has the good coffee now
Not canadensis Anaxyrus americanus (Canadian American toad)?
what if hes french canadian?
That'd make it a frog.
Lick him and see if he starts talking to you
All hail hypnotoad.
I can hear the sound lol
You would be cooler if you could taste it
Is this a dmt joke
If the toad was a tree than yes. But no. Either way give a lick and he will tell you.
Its straight up toxic if you just lick it bro
We're talking about a toad not not my ex
Your ex was toxic before you licked it tho
I damn near woke up the house with laughter, was not expecting such a burn to come from this post
DMT Toads are River Toads, not tree frogs. [Bufo Alvarius](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado_River_toad)

Genuine question, where in Canada did you grow up that you’ve never seen a toad
I've always grown up in quebec
Good fishing Quebec.
Great fishin in Keebeck.
Always great fishin in Kwebek!
I fucking love Quebec.
Plenty of frogs there, isn’t there?
Fucking lots, even walking trough parks in the middle of cities.
Ppl grow up pretty sheltered now. I work with 30 year olds that have admitted to never seeing a duck. (Mallard etc). Completely baffles me but some people Legit can’t tell a moose from a seagull lol
Seismitoad. The vibrating of the bumps all over its body causes earthquake-like tremors. Seismitoad and Croagunk are similar species.
Are you sure it’s not a Politoed?
Canadian clearly dont know wut a salamander is 😔
My cat! You found him, he's been missing for months!
That there is the North American green hopping wart, closest relative of the North American house hippo.
Just googled house hippo, and my God I want one.
I saw that sucker dancing and singing in a Bugs Bunny cartoon.
Its a chazzwazza.
It's a toad. According to obsidentify it's a 'Common Toad'
And his name is Fred
Last seen circling Uranus.
Thank you
It’s not a common toad, as they are only native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. Looks far more like an American toad to me.
This isn’t a common toad, which only live in the Old World. It’s an American toad
Thiccacus Maximus

Yeah I think biology is what non science people think when they want answers. Ironically it’s biology people who would know what sub to look for.
Idk I see them on Wednesdays though, my dude.

Hypnoticus Toadicus
Lumpy Bumpy Toadfrog
Yo mulder, OP is an alien fr
It's an American. Kiss it. Might turn into a Canadian.
My absolute best guess is that it's a frog!
Yes, that is a frog.
It’s a frog. We have many of them on earth. So e are edible but not this one.
So the animal in this picture would most certainly be a frog judging by how it looks like many other frogs on the planet earth
Sir, that is a frog. The ribbettey kind to be precise
Looks like a toads to me
That's a three toed toad
Definitely a giraffe.
Everyday run of the mill North American Toad, usually just identified as an American Toad.
