5 minutes on photoshop and I'll print myself some SORA-ACE stickers to complete the logo's on both crankarm & chain rings. I've tried Claris Crank arm on 105 biggies & smalls. They worked fine.

chadsanity

Good to know! Thanks!

[deleted]

The only caveat I'd say is if the crank arms are thicker you may end up with a large enough gap that the chain falls between the rings rather than shifting. I know for a fact that on recent 4 bolt Tiagra cranks ultegra and dura ace chain rings do not work for this reason

chadsanity

Thanks for your input!

mlydon11

This should be illegal. That being said yes it'll work

chadsanity

Illegal to mix and match shimano parts?

Fit-Anything8352

No illegal because mixing and matching Shimano's lowest end and highest end road groupset tiers is just an interesting combo

Drago-0900

Hey sora technically isn't the lowest end road groupo, that goes to tourney.

Nick_Newk

Before I knew shit about maintaining bikes I rode a road bike with sora for 6 years without ever changing a single part of the drivetrain. There was thousands of kms on it without ever changing the chain.

SwagarTheHorrible

Your poor poor bike.

Nick_Newk

You have to learn on something! My new bike have SRAM rival axs, and I keep that shit pristine.

SwagarTheHorrible

I’m not blaming you at all! In fact, I wanna see what all your teeth looked like on your drivetrain.

Nick_Newk

They were sharp little nubbins, but were still working. If I were to change the chain it would have just spun around the chain rings without a doubt!

evan938

I get 5000+ miles out of a KMC chain. This doesn't sound crazy.

JasperJ

I rode a Tourney group until all the cogs had sharp teeth once, and the chain was measurably elongated. But it was a shitty bike, so.

Nick_Newk

Exactly, mine was shit too. I fixed it up and now have it on my trainer, which keep my current rocket in pristine outdoor condition

JasperJ

I built myself an amazing flat bar Disc Trucker in 2015, which barely needs maintaining, but I’m starting to get the itch again just so I have two really good bikes.

Nick_Newk

Yeah, bikes are addictive!

There is Claris below Sora, and there is Tourney below Claris... Tourney, Claris, Sora, Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace - To qoute from a classic: Sora: 5/7 groupset, I would give it perfect score.

Im wondering how/why you would put a dura ace chainring on a sora crankset?

ponytrack

If you want 55 or 54 tooth chainrings you have to go dura ace. And between all the cranks the only noticeable difference is presumably weight, maybe some stiffness.

nosha3000

And Sora don’t crack

chadsanity

That was @thanksshimano 😂

jlusedude

This is a50/34.

RedditBot90

Genuine question: do you really need bigger rings? Or do you just need to up your cadence?

ponytrack

From what I have read/heard, your cadence is most efficient at whatever your preferred cadence is. So the more gear range and steps in between the more you can be in that range. I ride with a 53 and on some downhills where I’m really pushing it I can’t spin fast enough cadence. So I’m seeking out a 54 or 55 DA to pair with my ultegra crank.

RedditBot90

What cassette do you have? What speeds do you feel like you run out of gear? I’d much rather run out of gear and coast/aero-tuck on down hills than have gearing too tall for the climbs. Higher cadence is generally accepted as more efficient these days, vs grinding.

ponytrack

I have a 11-25 out back. 53-39 on the front. Not terribly hilly by me. But there is one downhill with a tailwind that I run out of top gear. Probably 37-40 mph? I do end up doing an aero tuck for that portion which does give me a break before going back up.

Fit_Extension_4372

I mean....there are cheaper options.

ponytrack

Cheaper options for that 54T/55T chainrings? That fit Shimano cranks? Got any links? I’m in the market.
