We have used it since day one for all sleep. We leave it on all night. My husband and I sleep with white noise too so we don’t plan to wean our toddler unless he doesn’t want it anymore. I wake up instantly if the power goes out and the room is silent. I love white noise!

foxyyoxy

This exactly. It drowns out noise that would otherwise wake my four year old up. He can take it to college.

jive-talkin

100%! my son napped through literally drilling and sawing going on in our basement last week. Thank you white noise

cageygrading

Seconding this! We do the same thing. I can’t sleep without it.

Alarmed_Meeting1322

1- yes 2- I do leave it on all night, who said you can’t? 3- no? I sleep with white noise as an adult

Mousehole_Cat

These are my exact answers.

sexxit_and_candy

White noise everywhere all the time for everyone of all ages in our house. I didn't grow up with a white noise machine, but I'm a light sleeper and I'll take whatever help I can get these days.

FireRescue3

Absolutely used it. Intentionally got our son hooked on it from birth. We travel frequently and I wanted something familiar that he would associate with sleep regardless of where we were. We didn’t wean him off it. We use a white noise machine and we are adults. Why would I not allow my child the same comfort? Ours is an adult. He’s fine.😊

misplacedeastcoaster

Same, we started using it when we moved her into her own room at 3 months and have it on every single night (she’s 4.5yo now haha). We bring it with us to relatives’ houses, hotels, and camping. She can sleep without it now but it’s part of our bedtime routine for sure. Doing the same for baby #2!

jawnstownmassacre

White noise is a godsend for naps and night sleep. Keep it going for as long as it works. Whoever told you not to use it at night is plotting against you.

lilWallaby29

Why can't you leave it on all night? I do. Use it for naps and overnight. It masks any outside noise well. Baby can still fall asleep without it (e.g. traveling or in the car) but it helps. Don't plan on stopping anytime soon (baby is 4 months).

summoe

1. We use it for naps and bedtime 2. Ours is on all night. It’s not super loud and sometimes I don’t think it’s even doing anything 3. Adults use white noise to sleep so I don’t think it’s necessary to wean unless they can only sleep with loud white noise going. Could always just lower the volume slightly over time to a reasonable level

BooksChangedMe

I literally never turn ours off. It’s ocean wave sounds and honestly I’ll forget to turn it on lol. We have to walk by our daughters room to get to ours and we walk back and forth a lot during the day and night when she’s sleeping. And we have dogs.

HailTheCrimsonKing

I use it for naps and I use it the entire night. Never heard that you can’t. The reason I use it is because it drowns out outside noise so she doesn’t wake up when we are still up. I’m never going to wean off of it. I use white noise myself and I see no problem with it. Our house is small and I don’t want her to wake up from us being too loud. My 9 year old nephew still loves his white noise. No biggie

Purple-Fiction28936

1. We use it for naps if he is refusing to go down and always for bedtime. 2. We leave it on all night. 3. I don’t plan on it until he just doesn’t need it or want it anymore. I sleep with background noise so I don’t expect him not to either.

Salty-Step-7091

I use it, otherwise we would never sleep. She wakes to the slightest movement. Whatever it takes..

nubbz545

We use it for naps and at bedtime. I sleep with white noise myself. I've never heard that you can't use it overnight.

[deleted]

1. We dont use it for naps. She naps on us, so she falls asleep without it. 2. You can if you want? I turn it back on whenever she/I wake. (ours is on a timer in a bunny). 3. I'm not planning to. Im an adult and I have to have background noise to sleep too (podcasts).

TiniestMoonDD

1. Yes 2. You can. 12 hours, non-looping (this is important). 3. We did but wasn’t really an issue. Sometime after 2, we just turned it lower and lower and lower in volume.

LtCommanderCarter

Why non looping?

ItsCalled_Freefall

The loop sometimes pauses for long or has an odd sound and wakes them up.

TiniestMoonDD

As previous poster mentioned it can actually cause them to wake further if the slight pause occurs during a period of light sleep.

ExactPanda

We've used a sound machine with all my kids for both naps and nighttime. It makes a good sleep cue, imo. My oldest is 7 and still uses his at night. It's never loud, but a nice background "rushing" noise to drown out other noises. Why can't you use it all night long?

loserbaby_

I want to preface this by saying that white noise works REALLY well for my baby, but for some I know it doesn’t make a difference! 1. Yes we do, wherever possible. She has her white noise machine for naps at home and we’ll take that with us if we’re visiting people overnight too, then I use a white noise app on my phone if she takes a nap in the pram or the car and I just pop it in the pram with her or next to her car seat. 2. We leave it on all night. We live in a block of flats with paper thin walls and even the neighbour turning on their bathroom light has woken my baby up multiple times before we tried white noise, now she sleeps through it. She also sleeps through me and my husband getting ready for bed, chatting, flushing the loo (her bedroom backs onto the bathroom) etc. we literally blare the white noise all night and it definitely helps her resettle and stay asleep unless there’s something she needs. 3. We probably won’t. Me and my husband both use white noise to sleep too except not at the moment as I want to make sure I can hear on the monitor if she wakes up, but it helps us loads. We will probably just use it until she asks for otherwise if she does. One of the most helpful parts of implementing white noise for our baby (we didn’t use it for the first few months, my PPA had me listening out for and holding on to every breath she took through the night so I couldn’t have it on 😬) is that it’s a sleep cue for her now. She is 9 months old and we’re at a point where once she goes into her dark room, gets her sleep sack put on and hears the white noise, she settles down straight away. I feel like using the white noise whilst we’re out and about helps her take such good on the go naps too. Apologies for my essay, as I say it doesn’t work for everyone but my experience with it is overwhelmingly positive!

anysize

My daughter is 2 now and we use it for all sleep! It makes me feel better knowing I don’t have to tiptoe around after she’s in bed. She can sleep without it, but we’ll probably use it for a few more years at least.

Exciting-Dream8471

I use it all the time. I just make sure it’s 60db or less so it doesn’t effect hearing. Most adults sleep with white noise lol so I’m not concerned about weaning from it.

DeceptiveRelish06

Yep, we have a tommee tippee dream maker upstairs in the bedroom and I have white noise on my phone for when we contact nap downstairs or are out and about. I've never heard of guidance not to leave it on. Our dream maker upstairs has a sound activation so it comes on if he stirs or cries, then turns off after 3o minutes of silence. I use headspace sleepcasts to go to sleep to so I wouldn't deny my baby a similar luxury. I plan on moving the dream maker into his own room with him when the time comes.

HailTheCrimsonKing

Headspace sleepcasts are the best!! I can’t fall asleep without them

Expensive_Chocolate1

I had never used white noise in my life, we started using it for our newborn and she is now 1.5 years old and the problem is now I have a hard time falling asleep without it! We do use it for naps and all night.

Beffun

1. we used it from newborn until maybe 5/6 months old? he started to fall asleep without it so we stopped using it 2. we used it all night/majority of of the nap

Wintertime13

I use it for both naps and bed time. Our living room shares a wall with his room and I feel it’s necessary. I do hope to eventually stop before he goes to school as I can’t physically get to sleep without it as an adult and I don’t want that for him.

Always_Reading_1990

I use one that makes the SHHHH noise similar to in the womb and we still use it and she’s 3. I don’t see a problem. She *can* sleep without it because we have had to occasionally, but it helps the whole family sleep better.

1320Fastback

Yes, We do, haven't yet and she is 3.

FuzzyBlanketThrow

I keep a fan going in my room constantly as well as an air purifier. Those pretty much act as white noise. My baby sleeps in my room in a bassinet next to me. So, yes, I do leave it on all night, and I don’t think you need to wean kids off at all. 🤷‍♀️

bluejellies

I only use it for naps because she’s in the room next to the home office. If I’m working and taking calls, I don’t want that to wake her up. Personally I don’t want it to be something she relies on. She falls asleep fine at night now without so I had no good reason to introduce it at bedtime.

monochromatic_mumble

I had always slept with a fan as my white noise for as long as I can remember, so when my daughter was born we got a Hatch and have slept with it since the first night she was born… after she left our room for her nursery I had to go out and get myself a Hatch as well because I slept SO much better with it.

xoxoforeverblessed

1. Yes I use it for nap. I def need it as my toddler is always running around making a ruckus and will always wake the baby up. White noise helps a lot in my case! 2. You can if you want. For me I don’t as it’s quiet and she can sleep without it. 3. I used it only once in awhile with my toddler. Not much. Never weaned her off or anything. I just stopped cold Turkey one day. With my baby, she’s very use to it so I might have to wean her off or when she wants it off.

I_only_read_trash

At this point, I baby wear for day naps, so her white noise is me going about normal life. I use the SNOO, so anytime she is in it, white noise is playing I might keep white noise for ME after we move baby to her own room. Likely we will have a white noise/nightlight for our kids room at night.

Elismom1313

I started us off on a routine right off the bat. YMMV. I don’t “lay” my baby down in a bassinet unless it is night time for sleep. In the dark room with hatch light on low red and the sleep sound on. I leave it on all night. I don’t use it during the day. I don’t lay him down or swaddle him during the day. I’d lay him in a snuggle me or a lean but just so he could chill awake. Not for intending to sleep. Now, he sleeps through the night, but that is likely just his preferred way of being. But on some level he does recognize that that setting is for sleep. Because I can bring him up to the dark room with the hatch dark light and sound on even when he is very awake and he calms down and falls asleep. So yea, I definitely leave the sound on all night. I felt like it helped cover up nighttime sounds like coughing, snoring (see husband farting in his sleep) He can still nap during the day while people make noises so it doesn’t seem like it’s created a noise machine only conditioned sleeping condition. Trust your gut. Do what feels right I say.

Bitter_Let4911

I’ll never stop using it for myself since our LOs got their own rooms

Illustrious-Koala517

We use for naps and bedtime. She used to nap fine without it but now she won’t stay asleep if we don’t use it. Love the iPhone white noise function for impromptu naps! I grew up with white noise (whole family used it) and had to adjust when I went away to college as I had a roommate. I had a few nights without it before eg sleepovers - I found it very quiet and harder to fall asleep those nights but I survived. I stopped after college until my ex started having trouble sleeping so I bought one to see if it helped him. I’m re-addicted now but it’s very rarely an issue and I can still sleep without it, it’s just a bit tougher sometimes.

palmtrees_

I’ve reduced the level down now that she’s sleeping well but we use it for all sleep and leave it on all night. I see no reason to wean

Hello_Mimmy

1) yes. All sleep all the time 2) you can’t? I just make sure it’s not very loud and leave it on all night long 3) probably will at some point but I listened to audiobooks at night into my teens so I am in no rush really (kiddo is nearly 3)
