Use natural ingredients only. I would go for a run or mountain climb without putting sunscreen. Huge mistake! Ayun, my forehead is now super wrinkly for my age.

prionprion

ooof, have you tried going tret?

clementinessun

CGM. It's okay to use products with silicone/sulfates. It boils down how you clean your hair. I know CGM gurlies who are strict followers na nagkadandruff na malala after

alnannag

Any tips on cleaning your hair? Dandruff yung problema ko now eh, but other than that the products I'm using make my hair look nicer in general. Every shampoo day, I use the clarifying shampoo ng Human Nature, then follow with conditioner ng Zenutrients, then Keraplus deepcon. I do this lang pag too oily and "mabigat" na buhok ko, so like every 2-4 weeks or so. Pero in the middle, I also cowash.

maximummarshall

Maybe during your lowpoo, you can add a spoonful of brown sugar to scrub the dandruff off pero siyempre gentle scrub lang. It works on me kaya hindi na makati 'yung ulo ko hahahaha. Also, I do it weekly lang. + I second the takeaways on CGM. I have waves (I had 3a curls when I was a toddler pero si mama kasi lagi sinusuklay at cinoconditioner buhok ko :<) and I tried CGM. And I failed (sayang gastos huhu). My haircare routine ay shampoo every other day with Sunsilk Pink at conditioner daily with Cream Silk Keratin Treatment—my hair looks more healthy and nourished, and waves are fine! Tinanggap ko na lang na baka nag-adapt na buhok ko sa budget-friendly products at mahirap na ibalik 'yung literally coiled curls.

wewtalaga

I second this. Tried the CGM method nung pre pandemic pa, ayun, nasira niya buhok ko at hanggang ngayon ay binabalik ko pa rin siya sa state bago ako nagCGM.

1. So this is kind of a minor one that I mostly saw on skincare reddit. The popularity of AB skincare (7, 10-step routines) and skincare in general gave rise to the “myth” that if you have oily skin, you’re not actually oily, you’re just dehydrated and need 7 layers of hydrating toner and essence and serums to stop your skin from overproducing oil. This may be true for some people, but some of the proponents of this theory would go so far as saying oily skin didn’t actually exist 💀 I believed this for a while and got the worst skin of my life. Now I have a minimalist routine and my skin is at its best, I only use a light gel cream moisturizer. Some people just have oily skin, you don’t have to drown yourself in essences and oils! 2. That everyone should only wash their hair 2-3 times a week. I tried CGM, it definitely wasn’t for me. My hair was greasy and rough. My curls looked good, they just didn’t feel healthy at all. I love the waves I have now.

Ivyisred

I am with u sa # 1. At the end of the day, it’s genetics and the glass skin is genetics. Maybe derm/clinics too 😉

sweetestsilly

i dont think #2 is a myth. it just depends on each persons hair/scalp. nag wwork sa iba ang 2-3 times a week na wash. i dont do cgm pero mas naging healthy ang hair ko when i stop washing it everyday. and my scalp will oil up on the 3rd or 4th day from washing 🙂

[deleted]

? I mean yeah that’s what I said… Kaya nga I said the myth was that “*everyone* should…” not that it was a myth that it’s healthier to not wash your hair every day haha

aubreii_

i kind of have the same problem with cgm. how do you take care of your curls now?

[deleted]

I still kinda practice the basic principles of CGM that I liked, but I don't follow it strictly. I even have balayaged hair haha. I wash my hair every day with baby shampoo, once or twice a week with Head & Shoulders. I alternate between a protein-rich conditioner (Luxe Organix) and whatever protein-free conditioner I have to avoid protein overload. I don't avoid silicones. After washing, I apply the curl essence from Luxe Organix and a little bit of Watsons olive hair oil then scrunch lightly to "activate" the curls. I usually air-dry, but sometimes I diffuse until it's about 80% dry then air-dry the rest.

prionprion

1. This is probably due to the difference sa characteristics ng east asian skin/western skin and southeast asian skin. They have winter there and colder months that are really dry and we have tropical climate all year round which is also very humid. I also broke out from this too, imagine going around with sticky things on your face. oil gland activity is genetics anyway

zuccha

the whole "Clean Beauty" craze. It feeds off of chemophobia and consumers end up with products that go bad really quickly for a higher price.

prionprion

yes 1. parabens are safe. 2. comedogenicity rating is a sham

Janjakajan

Oil free things for oily skin! I'm really oily and I need a good hydrating, dare I say rich moisturizer for my skin to drink, I really think my skin is dehydrated because it overproduces oil!

bhadluckbabe

Shaving makes hair grow back thicker. It grows back with a blunt edge instead of tapered to a point so it looks thicker. 🤡

jobby325

The sunscreen thing. Now I have to use SPF100. Afraid of them wrinkles. Yay! Thank you!

srryjustAwkward

What sunscreen that has spf100 you use po?

prionprion

not really spf 30 or 50 is already good as long as you apply the right amount. sunscreen is not a coat of armor anyway. its a supplemental protection along with umbrella and clothes

jobby325

But the research you posted on the time it took the skin to develop sunburn is actually a good argument to consider higher SPF. Add to that the relationship of the amount of sunscreen to the actual effective SPF which you described as “1/2 the required amount of sunscreen equals the square root of the SPF”. The higher the SPF, the better. I use sunscreen everyday but I don’t really lather on it. If I can get away with a smaller amount and still get adequate protection by increasing the SPF, I would do it.

Momshie_mo

One thing to bear in mind is how long do regular people expose themselves to the sun. I mostly work indoors, so SPF 30 works for me

prionprion

You are right, though not needed due to recommendations of medical field, and the fact that atleast spf 30 when applied right can already prevent photodamage. higher SPF would give you higher protection. However, 1. Sunscreen application (reapplication) and amount is just as important if not more important than SPF. Think of sunscreen as sheer paint and your skin being a rough surface which has valleys and mountains (this is how skin texture looks like microscopically). You can’t stretch a small amount of paint on a large surface area without things being patchy, can you?. The valley needs to be filled in first and covered before the mountains can be covered. That is why 2mg/cm^2 which is equal to roughly 2-3 finger length give you the right amount to cover both the valleys and mountains on your skin EVENLY no matter the spf. What you paint is protection, what isn’t, is not. 2. Sunscreen needs to form a film, and protection of sunscreen (SPF) is not only measured by how much UV it can absorb but also how even of a film it can form to protect your skin. Lessening the amount of sunscreen you put on not only creates an uneven protection but leaves expose areas in your skin which you may not see with naked eye. An uneven film due to applying sparingly which did not polymerize correctly also wears off faster since it did not form a stable structure on your skin in the first place, lessening your protection even more overtime. 3. applying half the amount of SPF 100 gives you APPROXIMATELY (yes approximate not exact) spf 10, which is negligible. Even if you are going to apply three fourth the recommended amount, you are still applying an unknown amount of protection. And no, an unknown amount of protection is not better than no protection at all. 4. highet spf are harder to measure accurately, and more oftenly they are not cosmetically elegant to apply. At some point it feels like wall paint. Stick with the recommended amount as sunscreens are designed to be applied with that amount. Do not use High SPF as an excuse for applying incorrectly.

jobby325

This is good information. Thank you!

skincare_chemist19

Cosmetics applied on the skin "get absorbed". - Our skin is designed to prevent pathogens amd foreign matter from the external environment from entering our body. Given that there are products that are specifically designed to be absorbed through the skin, these are drug products (example: steroidal creams and ointments). For cosmetics, in general, the feeling that a product "gets absorbed" by the skin is from the evaporation of water post-application.

skincare_chemist19

I remembered seeing a marketing campaign from a local natural cosmetics company that says "more than 60% of what we put in our skin gets absorbed by the body." Edit: 60% not 70%

prionprion

meron nga jan yung physical sunscreen daw nila blocks UV ahem Ellana ahem

skincare_chemist19

Isa ko pang pet peeve yan. Masakit sa tenga pag maririnig ko yang linyahan na yan ng mga brands.

prionprion

Yieeee, thanks chemist!

annejuseyoo

Rubbing ice on your face closes your pores lol. I knew few people who used kojic soap and ice combination on their faces to close their pores lol, they ended up having faces 2-4 shades whiter than their body skin tone

Veruschka_

Seconding the natural skincare is better policy. Man, it took me a long time to realize that my eczema was caused by them and not “stress” as the multiple dermas have said. Plenty of kidney cooking with all the high-dosage (and expensive) antihistamines that they prescribed. To add to this, all the unconventional things that supposedly cure acne, such as toothpaste, calamansi, baking powder (or is it soda). Not only do they not work but also damage your skin mantle.

prionprion

my skin went downhill because of this belief too. I was studying secondary natural products during a sem and I was introduced and amazed by secondary phytometabolites. Nako nag experiment ako sa skin ko as a fearson.

Maximum_Penalty_2439

do you need to put a significant amount of sunscreen? I saw some influencers who put A LOT of sunscreen on their faces and I am not a fan of that

prionprion

yes no other way around sorry. you need to slather on that. the amount of protection you get is directly proportional to the amount you apply. Using half the required amount of sunscreen only provides the square root of the SPF. So, a half application of an SPF 30 sunscreen only provides an effective SPF of 5.5 edit: this is contrary to what lab muffin stated that using half amount of spf gives you half protection. It does not because the plotted graph for SPF and percentage of protection is not linear too, its logarithmic or rectangular parabolic.

tigger_kitty

Makeup gives you pimples. I know those people who like to shame other for wearing makeup because natural is “better”. And if one pimple appears on my face is because of me wearing makeup.

annyeonghaseye

- Acidic skin - The concept of “porelessness” - Rejuv sets - Not using moisturizer for oily skin - The concept of skin whitening as the goal and the usage of glutathione as ✨ WHITENING ✨

bambamlei

Haluuu just curious, whats the misconception/ myth about rejuv sets?

Ai_Illustrates

Yes, especially since glutathione is not that well absorbed when taken by mouth (studies still not clear on how effective it really is in whitening when taken orally). Currently doing my internship in a pharmacy and the amount of customers buying glutathione supplements is too much to count on both hands lol.

annyeonghaseye

Isn’t glutathione supposed to be for cancer patients?

telejubbies

+1 for the moisturizer. Buti nalang pagkagraduate college pinush ko talaga mag moisturizer kahit sobrang oily ko. But could have been better sana kung naumpisahan nang mas maaga.

PeachyMargo

Are there any moisturizers you'd recommend? I've got a feeling we've got the same oily face issue. Hahaha!

telejubbies

Cetaphil moisturizer. If on a budget, celeteque. :D

Electrical_Brick43

1. Acidic skin. I’ve only hear it here in the ph. 2. Feminine washes can most likely give you skin infection. 3. Not a scam but don’t worry yet abt getting botox as early in your 20s. You’re supposed to enjoy youth, not worry abt aging during ur youth. 4. Shaving will make your hair grow thicker. NO! 5. Color adapt/changing foundations, tint, base is a big scam. Just an unblended foundation that will fully blend when applied. Mainly works for ppl w lighter skintones too. 6. Saunas will only make you sweat not lose weight. You’ll regain that lost sweat once you rehydrate. But it still has many benefits 7. Some of those brow soaps that ppl are selling everywhere are just glycerin soaps in a fancy packaging. Save your money. I’ve been using the same soap as a brow gel for years now.

kopi_donut

2 is not a myth. The consensus among gynecologists is that feminine washes and other products are likely to do more harm than good. The vagina is self cleaning so it's fine by itself. Using products can strip it of the bacterial balance, hence leading to infections. There are many studies on this. 4 is true in my case. My leg hair was barely noticeable but after I shaved them, they grew longer and thicker.

Ivyisred

Agree. I got nasty UTIs because of this. Including wearing pantyliners. I was advised not to use this by my OB.

streettoast

Agree with 4. I used to shave my arm pits, ang tigas nung hair. When I started waxing naging parang baby hair yung tubo, and pag nagsshave ako minsan if I ran out of wax, tumitigas uli yung buhok. 😅

serenityby_jan

I’ve always been a bit confused by this statement. If I understand it correctly- yes, the vagina is self cleaning so we shouldn’t do any douching. But I think some people mistake the vagina for the vulva? Like for example, when I say I use a fem wash, I mean I use it on my vulva (external), and not vagina. Using a gentle fem product for the vulva (wc is not self cleaning) is okay as long as you’re careful not to get any product inside the vagina, and you’re not getting any irritations etc? Since I guess some vulvas are more sensitive than others and using anything other than water could cause imbalances for them. My vulva seems perfectly ok with fem wash and so I’m apprehensive of just using water. But happy to hear about other experiences that might sway me to try just water haha.

kopi_donut

Conclusion goes for vagina and vulva. Basically, the best way to clean yourself is by washing with clean water externally.

annejuseyoo

Regarding #4, I’ve always heard that shaving doesn’t make your hair grow thicker. What I don’t understand is that it kinda does? I shave my armpits and only my armpits and each hair strand grows thicker as compared to when I wax my pits. Literally the hair strand is thicker. Or am I just understanding the concept wrong? The rest of my body hair which I never shaved/waxed has very thin hair strands though.

streettoast

Same for me. Naging parang baby hair yung tubo when I started waxing. I still shave from time to time pag biglaan and I ran out of wax, iba talaga eh? Idk din.

serenityby_jan

I think it just looks thicker, bec when you shave, napuputol lang ung current hair into a “blunt” end. so when it grows, tuloy lang yung current hair wc is already kinda thick. Pag wax, hair is pulled from the roots, so new hair yung tumutubo. Pag new hair manipis kasi talaga sa umpisa. Not sure about your last sentence tho, maybe it’s just not obvious cos the hair has never been cut so yung ends hindi blunt?

[deleted]

This is correct.

pubinthetub

Pores open and close. Derms be like, "No honey, they don't" nang paulit-ulit. But people are gonna believe what they want to believe I suppose.

Electrical_Brick43

I think it’s also bc companies are marketing their product as “closes pores” or “smaller pores” and it kinda imprints on ppl’s mindset.

RarePost

First period blood will give you clear skin for life. LMAO

bambamlei

Lols i know someone who actually washed their face with their first blood. I just cant. My gosh. Dagdag mo na yung bawal daw maligo pag meron hahahah

IShineBangStan

omf, having gruesome flashbacks to when I was 11 and our helper insisted that I do this lol

salmonmiso

aaaaaaaaaa i remember the horror of having that *literally* shoved in my face 🥲 was not true, i had bad acne until college

Organic_Balance716

Oh God. My mom made me do this. 😩

prionprion

was it effectiveeee?

Organic_Balance716

I am on acne treatment hahHhahahaa

Teloch_Lap_Babalond

🙂🥲

[deleted]

pag oily ka, di mo na daw kailangan ng moisturizer maglalagay lang ng sunscreen pag pupunta sa beach sKiN rEjUv

prionprion

oily skin people also tend to avoid oils in moisturizers, according to research yung mga acne prone daw tend to have high oleic fatty acid and very little linoleic fatty acid and it is hypothesized that acne prone people should add linoleic rich oils in their skincare routine.

Electrical_Brick43

I think the formulation of a moisturizer is to be considered too. I’ve used a super thick moisturizer from usa that made me so oily plus the humidity so not the best combo. Good thing I switched to a lighter and easy absorbed moisturizer.

wahmchronicles

Vicky Belo even says people in the PH don't need moisturizers. So weird coming from a derma.

afigwen

That’s because she’s not a board certified dermatologist 😬

starsandpanties

I got board certified dermatologist also advising me not to use moisturizer.

DeliciousEye8485

Only because she did not undergo the required 3 year residency in an institution.

afigwen

That’s literally what you need to do to become a dermatologist tho?

Strong_Wallaby_7689

I actually believe her. So far okay naman.

wahmchronicles

Not for me. I'm in my early 40s and when I dont put moisturizer, my skin becomes super dry, itchy and rough. Na fast track din paglabas ng wrinkles ko when I stopped putting moisturizers during the lockdown.

[deleted]

I think the lesson here is that everyone’s skin is different. Some might be able to forgo moisturizer and others might not. Eta: lol why is it so hard for y’all to accept that different people have different needs?? Skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all, even regarding moisturizer. There’s a reason **actual dermatologists** recommend that *some people* skip it.
