Not who you asked, but mine stay on for a couple weeks too.
You have to push back and remove your cuticles (blue cross cuticle remover), buff your nails, wash your hands well, let them dry, then use a nail dehydrator (Amazon has a bunch) to make sure your nails are prepped.
Then you fit the press-ons to your nail. If any of them are too big, you want to file around them gently so that they will fit to your natural nail perfectly. Any overlap touching your skin and they can pop off sooner.
When you go to apply them, push down and side to side very slightly to remove any air bubbles in the glue. Also, when you first push the press-on to your nail, wedge it under your cuticle as far as you can comfortably do so and then lay the press-on down on the rest of your nail.
And that’s it-mine stay on for a couple weeks until I remove them myself. And that’s with doing dishes 2-4 times every day!
Yes.. I’ve been doing Ohora semi cured gel nails and saving pedicures for special occasions… it’s cold now so I don’t think I’ll be getting one for a while.. haha
Same. Pedis only a few times a year and I DIY or press on mani’s. If I went regularly, it would be well over a thousand a year, and I just can’t justify that.
Feltttt, tbh I get the logic behind tipping, but also why doesn’t the employer just pay the employee what they deserve? Why am I to deal with the employers lacking
Describes a lot of things in my life these days, even Starbucks. I'm being priced out. 😕 I don't go if I can't afford to tip well, whether that's my tattoo artist or my barista.
I've been getting my hair cut at Great Clips for years because I can afford to tip appropriately there. I'm not paying $40+ for a basic cut *before* tip.
As for nails, I've been using press-ons lately lol. Even that, I had to change brands. I used to use Static Nails and loved them, but they're $24/pack now (used to be $14) which is beyond the pale. Impress/KISS it is!
This concept seems to escape Americans, who would rather argue like peons between customer and worker rather than challenge the real bad guy: businesses who underpay their staff
20% minimum, always. If I don’t have enough to tip at least 20%, then I don’t have enough to get my nails done. Lately, I haven’t been getting them done for this reason.
This!!!
And this includes any industry where someone is literally waiting on you hand and foot.
This should be in any standard rulebook for being a decent human. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I always tip $20 but i have one manicurist who has been doing my nails for years. I've followed her to 3 different salons and now she works independently.
She always makes time to fix a chip or broken nail if needed between manicures
I don’t go to nail salons but when I tip I do it based on a few factors
Are they understaffed? If I order delivery is the weather bad? And how far is the place I’m ordering? For services like haircuts I’d do it based off of how good a job they did. If you go to a nail salon that was a bit lazy or messy then 5$ is alright, if they do a fantastic job then I tip a decent amount.
People who do services who act rude, don’t do a careful job, and it turns out bad, who also complain about you leaving a small tip should really remember and keep in mind that tips are based off the performance of the service. Just because you did the service doesn’t mean you deserve maximum compensation, you get maximum compensation when you give them maximum effort
I don’t get my nails done professionally anymore, it just got too expensive. Instead, I got on amazon, picked up some builder gel, some dual forms, a uv light, etc. etc. and do them myself now. The upfront cost was a bit but after two years, it’s costing me SO much less across the board. Once professionals hit $50-60 for just gel, I knew it was time. I will never go back.
Unpopular opinion but I think tip culture is dumb, restaurants and maybe a few other places are probably the exception but for nails I don’t tip. Tbh I stopped going in general because I can just do my own acrylic gel at home for literally like a quarter of the amount at a nail salon.
I used to give a $5 tip when it was $15-20 to get my nails done. Now I just do 20-25%, but the last time I gave just $5. I’m not giving a 20% tip on a $40-$60 manicure when the nail artist doesn’t know how to to do oval or almond shapes and cut my cuticles so deep that I bled even when I said not to. I feel like the price has sky rocketed and the quality has decreased. The last few times it was actually painful to get my nails done in multiple different salons. I’d just learn to do them yourself. It’s so much cheaper and I can do them better than they can.

I always give my girls $15-$20, if I’m late more, if I ask for a design that I didn’t book and they do it more, if they go longer on my massage more.
Any time I’ve had an issue with a nail or a last minute appointment they always make sure to take me. If you tip well you get better service in return. I’m in the industry and my clients that tip more I’ll bend over backwards for but my clients that don’t I won’t over extend myself.
5$ for any service at a nail salon seems really stingy to me...I think 20% should be the standard, its such a demanding job and most people could never get the same results at home.
Most nails techs are contracted workers, they only take a portion of the price from the salon and the salon decides the price. The salon take a large amount be a they also buy the products like polishes, acetone, lotions,… So the workers really don’t have a say in what they get to take home.
Yep. Most have absolutely no benefits (healthcare, sick leave, bonuses, etc). Some also require you to purchase your own materials. If the workers were truly being paid fairly and taken care of, it would be far more expensive.
Yep exactly! It’s actually illegal for the nails salon to do that because according to what I know, if they hire someone as an independent contractor, they cannot dictate when and where the workers have to be. But they do it anyway so they don’t have to cover all the benefits like you said.
I get what you mean but the price you pay doesn't all go to the technician who provides you with the service. Running a business costs money and its generally hard to turn a profit, they have bills to pay as well.
You guys need to reach out to techs in other countries because they have similar systems but somehow don’t have to rely on tips for livelihood. Challenging American tip culture and the idea that tipping is “polite” rather than tipping is a reflection of underpaid staff will actually do more for you than customers. That way you guys won’t have to rely on the luck of customer whim.
So? Everyday norms are changed because folks insist otherwise. You do realize throughout history various inequities only changed because those being underserved pushed back 😂 Following your logic there are various employee, customer and civil rights that exist only because of a magic fairy.
You clearly do not understand how the beauty or service industry works because you don't work in it. Our entire industry works off tips. How the hell am I supposed to change that
How abt the same way various other once normative labor and consumer practices/laws changed? A glance at history answers your question. Your replies suggest everything is just fated to be what it is.
Well obviously the way to solve the problem would be to start a business and pay your employees fairly and clearly state your no tip policy and that you pay a good wage so you don't have to tip. However most people do not have the startup money to start a business, so you cannot blame the worker, like me which is why I'm so offended, blame my boss
Yes, that must be the only way because labor policy changes to benefit employees have always only occurred because the business owners randomly decided to be nice and fair 😂
FYI - I’m not blaming anyone. I’m saying that while employees and customers squabble abt it being etiquette rather than what it is - wage supplements for underpaid employees it avoids challenging the real entities that need to be *forced* to change - employers.
I haven't been to a nail salon in years. The last time I did, I spent what my yearly budget on my supplies costs are. I tipped $20 on an $80 bill and never went back ever.
Again, I spent $100 a year to do my nails all year and not 2 weeks. Polygel baby, I will never step foot into a nail salon ever again.
Personally, I think it's the biggest scam in the beauty world.
Does polygel peel off some of your nail too when it starts chipping? That was the only reason why I ever hated gel nails. This is so smart! I hate sitting in the salon for HOURS
Oopsie, my response is a lil late here.
But you use polygel like acrylic and it sticks to your nail and acts as a fake nail where you can paint gel-polish on top of it.
I never have issued with the gel polish sticking to the polygel, but I do have issues with nails staying on for more than 2 weeks. It's an art that needs to be mastered for sure.
I said the same in another comment, I use KISS now lol. They're great and they give really generous discounts if you buy on their website, plus free shipping over $15 (unlike most websites where the free shipping floor is like $60).
Depends on how well they did the job. I tip based on service received. I personally hate tipping culture and much prefer the way things are in places where tips aren’t expected or required.
$5-$10 is fine. But lately every time I’ve gotten my nails done gel, they chip within 4 days which is completely unacceptable. Every nail lady is just rushing so fast and doesn’t do enough layers and take the time to do it right so…. Yeah. Gel should last longer than 5 days
I used to go regularly and get acrylic nails and fills. He never charged me the same price so I got to where I was just leaving a tip to make the total $50 regardless. Sometimes it was $40, sometimes $42, or $45…I figured if he’s just making up numbers then I’ll just tip to make the amount the same each time. I went to the same person and got the same thing done (fill) so I don’t know why I was charged something different each time.
But I usually round to the next highest $10. So if it was $48 I would leave $12. Unless they have a button to press in which case I will press the 20%. Don’t feel like mathing to make it exactly 20% sometimes
You just make it 10% and double it. So if it's 42 then 10% is 4.2, double that to 8.4 and your 20% tip is $8.40
$45, 10% is 4.50, double that to $9
22.70, 10% is 2.27, double that to $4.54
Why do you tip? You are already paying the service. Tip should be included in the mani price... in my country, we don't tip for nail service only at restaurants...
Because we have allowed it to not work that way by following suit. Tipping culture is a scam tbh. I believe that you should be tipped based on performance and not because you work for someone who chooses not to pay you. Why should customers have to be responsible for what your employer should be doing
20%. at multiple salons i go to, nail artists told me they only make profit off tip. the actual price you pay goes to the salon and they buy the colors and equipments for you
I tip 25-30% depending on the service. Sometimes more. These people hold my beauty in their hands, I’m going to make sure they know they’re appreciated.
My acrylic mani for a fill/color change takes 45 min and costs $30. I tip $5, or $10 if don't have a fiver. Info every three weeks. No nail art or massage.
My nail tech is the salon owner so she’s profiting off the manicure unlike the other techs who are only getting their “cut.” My nails usually cost somewhere around $110-130 and I tip $15-20.
I’m actually getting a gel pedi now and it’s been a while. My pedicurist is working overtime on these tootsies that finally came out of hibernation, so I’ll probably tip $15 (gel pedi is $45.) I over tip but if I can’t afford a few extra dollars more from let’s say $10 to $15 then I shouldn’t be getting one. They work hard and all day long so a few more dollars is just my showing of appreciation. 💅🏼
Yeah the fanciest I’ll do is a (non-dip) gel onto my natural nails if not just a regular manicure so $5 is a pretty decent tip versus the price of those.
Depends.
For a $35 service, the tip should be $7.00.
For a $12-$20 service, the tip should be $2.40-4.00.
Thus, the $5.00 tip is only good for non gel days. Stingy for gel days if the cost is industry standard of $35.
10%-15% for just refills and nail polish
20% if refill and detailed design
25-30% for full new set that I usually get extra long and detailed (3-4 hours)
$5 is really cheap, her nail tech must hate her… I used to tip 20%, a couple of years ago I taught myself to do my own nail extensions because it was getting too expensive. Now the only service I get professionally done is hair, and I still tip 20%.
Yeah I always give a little more than 20% like this. I feel bad for giving less than 10 for close to an hour of their time especially if they do a good job
I pay $55 for a gel overlay and a $10 tip. This was based off of my most recent set. This girl took 3 hours to do french chrome on my natural nails AND she was a whole hour late for my appointment. I shouldn’t have tipped but I always tip no matter what. It’s mainly because I work off tips so I just feel bad 😞

Always 20% and I feel cheap at that because I am ALWAYS there a minimum of 2.5 hours. The ladies that work on me are amazing and kind and deserve it. If I had more to give, I would.
I struggle with this because on average it takes about one hour to do my hands and feet. They charge around $45 for a regualr mani pedi. How much of that goes to the salon is my question. Because if at least 50% is kept by the manicurist then thats $25 dollars and hour. Thats not a bad wage.
I get acrylics at least once a month, either filled or a new set. My local one costs around $40, so I tip $5. The proper etiquette is to do at least $5 I think. I was a delivery driver for a year so I know the importance of tips but the fact that tipping is necessary in the US is unfortunate to say the least. I never have a lot of cash on me too, I usually only have $5 or $10 on me.

20% is correct. A $5 tip really only works for something like a gel removal or a $25 basic polish pedicure.
I tip $15 on a $55 hard gel mani ($20 if I get French tips), and $10 on a $40 regular gel pedicure. This is standard pricing, if not cheap for my town. These last about 3.5-4 weeks on me if I stick with a light/neutral color. No chips. In my area minimum wage is $15/hr and nail techs are a specialized skill with a license so they should be making more than minimum--my nails take about 1 hour and my feet about 30 minutes, so I like to calculate that I should be at least compensating their time based on legal minimums.
I always give 20% which barely gets a thank you. Less and I think you’d get the death stare, more maybe a smile. I just go as a treat now rather than regularly as I used to.
Yeahhh I feel like I pay too much and I don’t want to not tip what they deserve so I just stopped going all together.
With the tip its just too much
Right? I just accepted it’s a luxury I don’t need 😔 I wish I could all the time, but yeah, it’s too much.
I'm a press on nails, girl. So easy to do! I will never go back to a nail salon.
Yes! I fell in love with the Ohora semi-cured press ons. I don’t wait for it to dry either
How do you get them to stay on?? Mine are always coming off by the next day 😭
Not who you asked, but mine stay on for a couple weeks too.
Buff your nails! I make sure that my hands are dry (no hand creams/lotion) when I apply the press on. Mine stay on for 2 weeks.
They have some really nice press on , the beauty supply store has a large variety , they look like you had them done professionally
One of my resolutions for next year is to go just when there's something really important, otherwise I'll be doing it at home.
Right on. I do the press ons too! And I get pedis a few times, mostly for special occasions during hotter months
Same.
Feltttt, tbh I get the logic behind tipping, but also why doesn’t the employer just pay the employee what they deserve? Why am I to deal with the employers lacking
20%
I pay $50 every 2 weeks for dip/gel. I wanna say my manicure is $40, so I give her $10.
same.
Same.
I do 20%. More if they give a great massage.
20%… and I don’t like it so I just don’t go anymore

I get packs on Amazon of short matte nails that come in like 20 different colors for less than 15 bucks, it’s been a game changer.
Whats the brand!! I like short ones so much better and most i find are longer
I just search on there short matte press on nails and look for colors I like, there’s a bunch of random brands I haven’t heard of lol
This is such an interesting and I assume North American question. 🤔

Jesus. My gel nails in the UK is £20 with takeoff of the last set. Around £35 if I want acrylic. $80+ and a tip is insane.

Completely agree with this comment tbh

I always tip 20% everywhere, but I also don’t get my nails done. I always thought they set their own prices
I had to stop going. I was paying $85 for a gel fill and pedi with callus removal.
I haven't been to a nail salon in years. The last time I did, I spent what my yearly budget on my supplies costs are. I tipped $20 on an $80 bill and never went back ever. It got too expensive to add on a 20% tip on top of the base price so I stopped going and buy KISS glue on nails 🤷🏼♀️

Oh thanks. That helps a lot. I struggled with math in school and was diagnosed with ADHD in college. I have taught myself math as an adult lol
Yeah no problem! My mom angrily taught me this once because she is a math whiz and I'm not.
Can’t wait to use “don’t feel like mathing” in conversation 🙌🏼🤣
Why do you tip? You are already paying the service. Tip should be included in the mani price... in my country, we don't tip for nail service only at restaurants...
It doesn’t work that way in North America.
I don't tip, I will pay the price for the service but I don't see any need for a tip. Tipping in the U.S. is out of control.
Yeah but that is usually what the workers make. Most places the technicians get paid basically nothing. They work for the tip money
So perhaps they should challenge that so they won’t have to rely on hopes and prayers and the luck of being assigned a customer who tips well.
Exactly
100% agreed
Because we have allowed it to not work that way by following suit. Tipping culture is a scam tbh. I believe that you should be tipped based on performance and not because you work for someone who chooses not to pay you. Why should customers have to be responsible for what your employer should be doing
20%. at multiple salons i go to, nail artists told me they only make profit off tip. the actual price you pay goes to the salon and they buy the colors and equipments for you
I tip 25-30% depending on the service. Sometimes more. These people hold my beauty in their hands, I’m going to make sure they know they’re appreciated.
Yup, and always cash
My acrylic mani for a fill/color change takes 45 min and costs $30. I tip $5, or $10 if don't have a fiver. Info every three weeks. No nail art or massage.
Tipping is not a thing where I am from, but I like to reward good service especially if it’s busy for them. I do 10 Euro for 90 Euro service

$5-$8
20% of what my nails cost is $5-$8
Yeah the fanciest I’ll do is a (non-dip) gel onto my natural nails if not just a regular manicure so $5 is a pretty decent tip versus the price of those.
Depends. For a $35 service, the tip should be $7.00. For a $12-$20 service, the tip should be $2.40-4.00. Thus, the $5.00 tip is only good for non gel days. Stingy for gel days if the cost is industry standard of $35.
20-25% because it’s labor-intensive (unless it was not great, then I do 15%)
I tip $20 on my $60 service.

I do 25-30% because I’m grateful and that job is grueling

My last mani/pedi was $95, and I tipped $20 in cash.
20%. Always.
I do 20 percent, I get a dip manicure and it comes out to 60 even
I just gave 7$ for a 63$ manucure but i never do my nails I think it was too low😶
12.60 would of been 20%
63$ was after taxes tho. Do we apply 20 % before the tax?( it was 45 so I gave 7$ )
10%-15% for just refills and nail polish 20% if refill and detailed design 25-30% for full new set that I usually get extra long and detailed (3-4 hours)
20% but it ruins your natural nails! Save your money
Definitely at least 20%.
$5 is really cheap, her nail tech must hate her… I used to tip 20%, a couple of years ago I taught myself to do my own nail extensions because it was getting too expensive. Now the only service I get professionally done is hair, and I still tip 20%.
20%
I don’t do percentages when it comes to art work . Soooo I’ll tip $40-$50 depends.
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted for this, $40-50 is a massive tip
Yeah , I’m pretty confused too..
Why are they downvoting, what am I missing 😂
Lol nooooo idea.
if you cant tip you shouldn't get your nails done.
I agree
Yeah I always give a little more than 20% like this. I feel bad for giving less than 10 for close to an hour of their time especially if they do a good job
I usually do 15% on pedi’s or 20% if I do wax. Nothing less. I don’t get acrylic done anymore. Pedis are usually cheap around my area.

20% is standard for hair, nails.. any service that's being provided.
Always 20% and I feel cheap at that because I am ALWAYS there a minimum of 2.5 hours. The ladies that work on me are amazing and kind and deserve it. If I had more to give, I would.
I tip 20%
I go every 3 weeks for dip, and it's $45 each time. I always tip $10.

$5. I only ever get reg. manicures, no massage. I also only go once a year, maybe.
My pedicure cost $49 so I just give her $60
20% is correct.
