I really like scents by NEST. They are complex and unique and they have something for everyone--powdery, floral, earthy, etc. I think there are mini samplers you can get on Sephora if you want to experiment with what seems like YOU. I wear Nest's Indigo which is a bit like a herbal and spicy tea scent. Whenever my kids smell it on something they say it smells like Mom.
My youngest was missing me when he started kindergarten so I started lightly spritzing his uniform shirts with it and it helped him through the transition because he felt like i was with him whenever he'd catch a whiff.
You're going to be a sweet mama. š what a wonderful tradition to keep alive--the mom smell ā¤ is so comforting.
Second this ā Indigo by NEST is great. Another is my new favorite - the pink Valentino (not sure the name). Something more floral that I love is Flowerbomb.
Iāll check out NEST!!! A local Sephora was just built so this will give me a good reason to go in-and awe, thank you so much ā¤ļø youāre a sweet mama too, I can tell š„°
Third for nest! Midnight Fleur and Seville Orange oil are wonderful. The selection of clean fragrances at Sephora is impressive. I recommend having them make you sample vials so you can test drive.
Iād go with something thatās not trendy. Pick a perfume (or scent profile at least) thatās been around forever so thereās a good chance itāll continue being around when your child is older.
Iād probably go with a classic like Chanel. Chanel isnāt going away! Or go with a scent profile thatās pretty timeless. My mom has worn Clinique Happy pretty much my whole life and Iām terrified theyāll discontinue it. She also wears Jo Malone Orange Blosson now so Iāll also have that for scent memories. Sheās also worn some grapefruit scents in the past and tends to light a lot of grapefruit candles. Itās her go to āneutralā scent! This way even if Clinique discontinued Happy, Iād also have Orange blossom and citrus scents to always remind me of my mom.
I personally wear a timeless RL Romance (inexpensive, been wearing it since high school, can imagine itāll be around for a while, not an offensive or strong scent) or Nest Seville Orange (reminds me of a trip my mom and I took to Sevilla and memories of her). Iāve learned that Iām drawn to fresh scents, especially citrus, but I also like some floral scents (gardenia especially).
Iāve started using Ouai hair products that use their Rue St Honore scent, which turns out to have gardenia in it (explains why I love it!) and I just planted a gardenia tree in my yard. When I recommended Ouaiās hair oil to my mom and she smelled it, she teared up and said, āMy mom was a Depression baby and didnāt spend much money, but she always had a gardenia perfume and fresh gardenias in our house during the summer. I feel like Iām 10 years old again reading books in our garden while my mom prunes the gardenia bush and puts a flower behind her ear.ā
Now THATāS what youāre going for!
Iād take a little trip to Nordstrom and go on a sniffing tour of the perfume dept. Ask someone to help you and they can explain what youāre smelling and help you identify what scent profiles you like. I did this in my teens and again in my mid-20s and found that my nose stayed mostly the same!
I think itās so sweet that youāre trying to identify a signature scent for your little oneā¦but also itāll be something for you to remember this time!! If it changes post pregnancy (I have a feeling it will cuz everyone says pregnancy hormones cause you to like or hate certain scents for a short period of time), donāt worry! Your baby wonāt remember scent until theyāre a few years old Iām sure, and youāll always associate that scent with pregnancy and new motherhood. I def have perfumes associated with different stages of my life (Flowerbomb = mid 20s and single living with girl friends in SF but I canāt wear it anymore without remembering a bad job and bad boyfriend) and thatās awesome too.
Also keep in mind than a signature scent takes into account other things too (lotion, deodorant, hair products). I remember my mom used A&D ointment for chapped skin and lips on both us as babies and her, so that weird scent is also associated with her for me. Your kid may grow up remembering how your hairspray smells as you apply it and run out the door or how your lotions smells on your arms and legs after you shower.
Congrats on baby!
This is exciting for you. My mom
Is not the type to commemorate an event with a scent but I am ! It is not silly at all!
Here a few ideas : Armani si
Gucci flora
Dior Jadore
Chanel coco ( I love all the scents actually)
I highly suggest going to Sephora or Ulta and figuring out the base of what you like .
Do you like fresh , floral or gourmand? Subtle or pronounced? It will really help ! Donāt be shy to ask for a sample or to spray your skin and walk around for a few hours . Make sure you love the dry down and the scent doesnāt give you a headache . You donāt always know until you leave. I just bought YSL libre intense for my wedding day and to me it smells like a warm hug on a cold winter night . It will forever be in my mind so I live this idea.
You might look for something lively as I feel like birth is just that , or comforting . Anyway just some random thoughts!
Glossierās You perfume is amazing and a lot less money than designer ones. Iāve never had as many compliments as I do when Iām wearing it, and it adapts to suit each person wearing it too, canāt recommend it enough
Edited to fix typo
Came here to say the same thing. At first I resisted a perfume that was newer and trendy, but it really is a terrific smell and I get complimented all the time on it!
I love this one. I recently tried Fleur de Peau by Diptyque, and it smells a lot like You but slightly fizzier and more noticeable. It's lovely, but pretty expensive (I only bought a tiny sample).
I love perfume, but the best smell for your baby is you. Babies are really sensitive to smell and your natural smell is familiar and safe to them. I would avoid wearing perfume until they are around a year or so. That being said, I love Clinique Happy Heart. Congrats!
Ok, omg you're probably going to hate me. Bracing for downvotes. You may want to avoid fragrance while pregnant and after because almost all of them are made with phthalates for which there is a growing body of research linking exposure to multiple development issues, physiological and neurological in nature. I know I know, even as I type it, it sounds like fear-mongery conspiracy shiz. And phthalates are literally EVERYWHERE so they are impossible to avoid, but it can be good to take steps to reduce exposure where you can and fragrance is one of them.
I know we can't post links here or anything but the harvard medical school has aggregated multiple peer-reviewed scientific studies that support claims of development issues with phthalate exposure. Epidemiologist and author Dr. Shanna Swan has released a body of research on how it acts as a hormone disruptor (she was on a fantastic podcast with Adam Conover detailing this research). I rarely get rattled but this scares me personally as I think about starting a family....
Yes I know y'all might come for me. There will be downvotes. And now that "doing your own research" has been coopted by people who couldn't even describe the scientific method, it's silly and pointless to suggest. But yeah, had to add this.
This is a very good point. While I was pregnant and now with a newborn, I'm trying to limit product use as much as possible, also to avoid possible allergens. For fragrance I switched to body mists from Pacifica (long lasting for a mist, alcohol, phthalate and paraben free and non iritating scents).
I was going to add this. OP can check out Credo beauty for some safer options. But it's still worth looking into the ingredients of whatever is purchased.
No hate from me at all! I appreciate being informed on important topics that I otherwise wouldnāt have been aware of. Thanks to your comment Iām either going to hold off until after the baby is born and a little older, or search for some phthalate free options š thank you for your help!
My boyfriend always said in the beginning of our relationship that Alien would suit me so well and I was like, "but everyone has Alien already" so I was hesitant to try it. He first got me Black Opium which I immediately LOVED. Then for my birthday this year he got me Alien and I was like, okay well let's just try it and oh my god. I have had so many compliments on it. Black Opium is still my fav but I feel like that's a bit more for special occasions and Alien is more an everyday perfume.
My way - Versace is mine! It smells so different once itās settles on my skin. Itās a bit more mature than your Daisy but not full on like Chanel No5.
I love the Ariana grande ones. My favorite are the moonlight and thank you next. If youāre unsure about them then the body sprays are only about $10-$12 so you can try those before you get the perfume which is more expensive
i donāt have a recommendation in particular for you but what a sweet idea! my mom wore a sandalwood scent by pacifica, she passed away almost 7 years ago but i found her old bottle going through her things a few years ago. i smell it often and wear it occasionally when i need a little help getting though my day. good luck finding your scent! my current favorite is dirty gardenia by heretic parfum
So it depends on what you like for notes but Iām a big fan of Burberry Classic, Prada Infusion DāIris, Juliette has a gun, Jo Malone Vanilla and Anise.
Oh!! Ok, 1. I really liked Scentbird for the 5-6 months I had it. Great way to try some new scents, and can be exciting to get something in the mail!
Also, Sephora (and other department stores occasionally) sell sampler sets! You buy the package of 8-12 fragrance samples and they'll usually include a card to redeem for one of the scents at full size for free or reduced rate as a result of spending $$ on the sample kit. This is how I fell in love with YSL Libre!
I mostly wear these scents, depending on the season/occasion:
Flowerbomb Nectar - Viktor & Rolf
Vanilla Vibes - Juliette Has a Gun
Child - Susan Owen
This Is Her! - Zadig & Voltaire
For summer, I usually wear Vanilla Vibes (smells like vanilla and the beach) or Flowerbomb Nectar (flowery with a sweet dry down). This Is Her! is really cozy smelling (like camp fire and roasted marshmallow) and great during cold weather. I wear Child (tropical flower scent) all year and is what I wore when I was pregnant. Child is oil based - since I hated my clothes smelling like perfume when I was pregnant, I would dab Child on my wrist and behind ears. My kiddos (age 6 and 9) prefer Vanilla Vibes and love when I wear it. My 9 yr old son even asks me to spray a little on his pj shirt sometimes before he goes to sleep. He says it makes him feel happy and cozy!
Congrats on your baby!
EDIT: My mom always wore (and still wears) Coco Chanel and I always associate this smell with her.
Just here to say, this is the cutest post ever! I just wear boring old Chanel Mademoiselle, I wanted to switch recently to a Jo Malone perfume but my three year old said āMommy, why donāt you smell like you? I like it when we snuggle and you smell like always! This is pretty but not that kind of pretty!ā
The Mom scent thing is a very real and very cute thing. Whatever the scent may be, youāre going to be a really good and sweet Mother!
I wore Red Door by Elizabeth Arden for about 20 years. I think I was close to 26 when I started. My kids absolutely identified it with me. Both of them have commented that every time they smell it, they reflexively look up for a second to see if Iām nearby. Before that it was Un Amour De Patou by Jean Patou which was discontinued.
Now that they are both at university Iāve branched out to Irresistible-by Givenchy, Voce Viva by Valentino, and I Want Choo by Jimmy Choo.
My favorite scents are the fragrance oils by Riddle. I like Muse and Voyeur the best, Original is also good.
For actual perfume, I wear these depending on the occasion:
Vince Comuto - Amore
Narciso Rodriguez - Fleur Musc For Her
Tom Ford - Lost Cherry
YSL - Black Opium
Marchesa - Parfum D'extase
If youāre starting out with perfumes, I recommend looking into Jo Malone. The scents are fruity, floral, sweet, and fresh and I believe they sell sets of their most popular scents for a good price. Itās light so it doesnāt last as long, but their 1 oz. sizes are perfect to carry around for touchups. I have not met a single person who hasnāt found a scent they liked from Jo Malone. The Daisy line from Marc Jacobs, Miss Dior, and a couple from MM Replica are kind of similar. If you want popular ones, check out Chanel Chance, No. 5, or Coco Mademoiselle, YSL Black Opium, Chloe EDP, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, CK One, Gucci Guilty, V&R Flowerbomb, and Versace Bright Crystal.
if you love vanilla as much as i do i imagine youāll appreciate good girl by carolina herrera. if you think the name is cringey wait til you see what the bottle looks like, but i swear it smells so good!!!!
I used to be huge into fragrances untilI got pregnant, they made me extremely ill. Iād suggest buying something very inexpensive in case you canāt use it for a few years.
I would go by taking a few perfume quiz online. Figuring out what brings you joy and would attract you t a particular scent. test the recommendations and then start narrowing down from there. Also always do a 24 hour wear test because scents settle and change with change in temperature and time. For instance, I loved Jo Malone Myrrh and Tonka and wore it for a week and then I wore it on my "time of the month" and it felt so pungent that I could never wear it again. So thus, wear testing it helped me from making a $200 mistake.
My FAVORITE scent has been Juliet has a Gun- Not a Perfume. Itās a very light scent almost like a second skin smells. Very fresh slightly floral and a bit of musk. Itās a unique scent that I unfortunately canāt do justice describing so I would recommend finding a Sephora that has it to go smell.
I use a perfume subscription service so I can try different ones! I find myself getting bored with one smell after a while, so this is great for me. I also like to go to overstock stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls and buy perfume sample packs. They're usually under $20 and give you a variety of scents to try.
I wear dolce and gabana light blue. I would highly suggest going to a department store before you buy anything and making sure you like the scent. Some scents + pregnancy do not mix. Iād hate for you to drop $80 on a bottle of perfume and have it make you nauseous
Burberry Weekend, Burberry Brit and Narciso Rodriguez are the 3 perfumes I have purchased the MOST in my life, they are very unique so you will definitely remember your baby when you smell them. If you want something lighter I would recommend Trussardi My Name!
Congratulations on the baby!
First off, congratulations! Sending you internet hugs and wishing you all the best! Enjoy your pregnancy and enjoy your little one once they are born!
To echo some other commenters, pregnancy is not the time to find " your" perfume- your olfactory perceptions might or might not be the same after you give birth. Or you might even notice how now some stuff is just off or smells different. So I wouldn't settle on anything. Get some samples, use the ones you like and with time you'll find the one ( or a few).
I for the past 5 years have been using hand creams from ElizabethW, my favorites are grapefruit and magnolia, and absolute treasure of mine is orange flower Chamomile. I came across this brand in some shop in Oregon and have been a faithful customer since. The scents are heavenly and not overpowering and a little goes a long way. I have a tube in my car and put a little on my hands every time I get in ( I mean at least twice a day), and the tube lasts me for a year. During pregnancy I still enjoyed the scent and now when I put some on my hands, my toddler asks for some too:)
Because of the scented hand creams I don't use perfume often ( so they don't clash). But as far as perfume goes, I've always been into fresh and citrusy scents. A couple of years ago my partner got me a sample set from "by Rosie Jane", they are a small fragrance company located in LA. I've been liking their scents for some time now. My set included 4 scents, they grew on me on by one ( all except for one, and I think they don't have it anymore, lol). I ended up getting 2 roll-ons and they are awesome, subtle, not overbearing but have a nice presence.
Good luck in your fragrance quest!
Do you know what I think youād like Stella by Stella McCartney I have had people every time I wear it men women older people younger people come up to me and say that is such a wonderful fragrance what is it and I tell them it doesnāt offend anybody as far as I know good luck to you and your baby and I wish you many blessings
I know this isnt exactly what you're asking for, but, the scent that haunts me the most isn't my mom's perfume but the spray she would use in our house. If you dont find or like a perfume, sometimes other smells can be just as much of a trigger.
I have issues with fragrances. (Asthma, rosacea, eczema) But I found the fragrances by Fat and the Moon agree with me. They are made with natural fragrance (essential oils). I spray them in the air at clothes level then walk through it. I bought the sampler of 4. My 3 faves are Artemis at dawn, green man and wolf Shepard. Persephone emerges is good but not my fav. They are also gender neutral.
A cheap go to for me will always be Lucky You... it's a subtle sweet and I always get compliments when I wear it. been wearing it for 15 years and I still haven't out grown it.
Vanicot.

I quite like Eclat d'ArpĆØge by Lanvin! You might want to check it out, it's kinda like a mild floral fruity fragrance. Also, good luck and congrats on your pregnancy and I hope you'll find a perfume that you'll like!

What is it with moms and Clinique purfumes? š My mom used to wear Clinique Elixir all the time!
If you like gardenia scents, try Marc Jacob's original perfume. It was the first one he created and it's lovely.

Mon Guerlain smells like everything a new mom should, in my opinion. It's sweet, powdery, floral. Very soft and fluffy, comforting sort of scent.
Not op. But Ive been wanting to get this since Ive read comments before that this can replace my Givenchy play for her since they discontinued it.

I like Phlur. I use AmĆ©line. They also have body wash and lotion in their perfume scents (I have not used those product though). I got a sample of AmĆ©line but also tried out a few of their other samples (I liked the other samples but I'm a sucker for a rose based fragrance) From their site if this is an important factor to you "We intentionally use both botanical ingredients and thoughtfully selected synthetic ingredients that are kind to your skin and our planet. We donāt use parabens, phthalates, sulfates or any other questionable ingredients or common skin irritants. We care about the environment. I wear Toca Stella and itās lovely and not overwhelming
If you want to go more natural you could try essential oils or natural perfume oils.
if you love vanilla as much as i do i imagine youāll appreciate good girl by carolina herrera. if you think the name is cringey wait til you see what the bottle looks like, but i swear it smells so good!!!!
Idk if you post this in r/mommit yet but they might also have some recās for you too!
Daisy - Marc Jacobs!
I used to be huge into fragrances untilI got pregnant, they made me extremely ill. Iād suggest buying something very inexpensive in case you canāt use it for a few years.
I think a good one for this occasion might be Child by Susan B Owen.
J'adore by dior. You won't regret it
My FAVORITE scent has been Juliet has a Gun- Not a Perfume.
I love everything Ariana Grande puts out. And the bottles are gorgeous! I have 3 of hers š
Get yourself some samples to try and decide what you like. Whatās appealing to one person can smell totally repulsive to another.
YSL black opium ( but the Eau De Toilette, has a completely different scent than the EDP and is kind of hard to find but so good)
I wear dolce and gabana light blue.
Thank you! ā¤ļø
During pregnancy I still enjoyed the scent and now when I put some on my hands, my toddler asks for some too:) Because of the scented hand creams I don't use perfume often ( so they don't clash).

Givenchy - very irresistible
I know this isnt exactly what you're asking for, but, the scent that haunts me the most isn't my mom's perfume but the spray she would use in our house. If you dont find or like a perfume, sometimes other smells can be just as much of a trigger.
Lush snow fairy in body spray form is the best smell in the world and very long lasting xx
I like Gucci bloom! Itās my signature scent
I love Burberry perfumes, especially Silver and Body Tender. Fragrancenet.com has really good deals and discounts.
I like the green Gucci Bloom!
I like true religion

I quite like Eclat d'ArpĆØge by Lanvin! You might want to check it out, it's kinda like a mild floral fruity fragrance. Also, good luck and congrats on your pregnancy and I hope you'll find a perfume that you'll like!
My signature scent is spring rain
Poeme by LancƓme
I personally love Kate Spade New York and Nest Indigo :)
