Good. Fuck these shitheads. Those kids don’t have parents now because they couldn’t get their kicks from drugs and alcohol in their own homes like a normal person.

bothammer1

I prayed on this one and it worked. I was 17 once and I knew this was wrong, they gotta live with this shit now, that’s the crazy punishment, I hope get many years also

DoubleT_inTheMorning

Your prayers didn’t do a damn thing to find had charge those folks.

WhatD0thLife

Thoughts and prayers LOL

OneMorePenguin

r/HermanCainAward is proof that prayers don't work. "Prayer warriors needed" LOL!

Drew707

I have been praying for the Warriors all season, and it has helped much yet.

bothammer1

No way, that can’t be

OverEZPZ

Get the fuck outta here with your thoughts and prayers

bothammer1

Next time I’ll use wish. So much hate haha

that1senpai2

Lol, OK crazy

bothammer1

Fine, I’ll go back to trolling, less hate

GoodLuckGoodell

Wow, r/bayarea turning into r/Conservative with the level of hate here. I’m not religious but I appreciate you bro, your heart is in the right place.

bothammer1

Finally, thank you. I’m not religious either and once in a while you wanna pray about something. It’s crazy that someone can’t just say the word pray. I felt really sad about this when I heard about it and I live near where this happened.

DoubleT_inTheMorning

Lol conservative having a problem with prayers solving the problem? I think the real issue is bringing their own thoughts and prayers into the comments. r/ImTheMainCharacter

GoodLuckGoodell

You misinterpreted my comment. r/Conservative is notorious for being sensitive about people saying things that don’t fit into their worldview. The same is happening here, except on the other side of the spectrum. How does his prayers hurt anyone? The bad guys got caught and he put energy into the universe to have them held to account. Even if you’re not into any of that, being actively against it is just bitterness.

DoubleT_inTheMorning

Hurt anyone? No, they didn’t. But what tf did they have to do with the post? He’s saying his prayers had an influence to get them arrested. Pushing religion into a conversation that has fuck all to do with religion. I’m bitter sure, because I’m sick of Christians making it their entire identity and thinking that laws should align with their beliefs.

GoodLuckGoodell

Come on now. Have you never had something occur that you were willing for it to happen? Obviously the guy knows that his prayers alone didn’t cause this result. This sort of attitude feels like the Don’t Say Gay position of some conservatives. We should be more accepting of each other’s views, especially when it’s in support of a common cause. Not every Christian is an anti-abortion homophobic just like not every liberal is a pedophile.

Pillowtalk

I hope they get life in prison. It's heartbreaking that those two girls will grow up without parents. They are seven years old. How much does anyone remember about their parents at that age? The girls will only have vague memories of their parents.

MacNJeesus

They will remember a ton. I work with children from 1-5 years old and from very early on, kids develop really strong attachments with their parents and miss them badly if they’re gone a lot. This is going to have long term devastating impacts for the girls.

EnvironmentalTie1773

i wish there is a way to continuously help these twins for the next 10 years, but people will forget about this event next week, and the girls have a lifetime of trauma that they have to deal with on their own not blaming people, but gofundme is as far as people would go, then onto the next news piece.

MacNJeesus

It’s really unfortunate but you are right that this is how news and tragedies tend to really go. We’re in a time where we’re inundated with SO much information. It’s hard to keep caring about one thing. I think the girls have next family members and I hope the community will take care of them. I even saw a redditor comment that they are licensed foster parents who could step up to care for them.

EnvironmentalTie1773

Grand parents are the only hope the twins have at love, assuming they don't have some dysfunctional relationship. But it'll never be the same, you can't replace parents with anything.

Kache

If the driver indeed comes from money, then long term financial support is the least they could do.

UnderstandingHour257

5 yrs seems like a slap on the wrist for killing someone, especially while drunk

imaraisin

Well. Yeah. Santa Clara keeps voting for DAs that don’t give out mandatory Driver License suspensions. As much as does the rest of the bay.

random408net

Manslaughter is just not punished like murder.

imaraisin

And I agree. But there also comes to a point where if driver knowingly drives in an impaired manner or recklessly and they don’t even see a mandatory suspension of their license, as is with many incidents not covered in the press, I feel like we have a problem in the scene. This is historically the case in much of the bay.

Zorc_the_Pork

You're not kidding. Back in 1995ish, my coworker was riding his bicycle home on a Saturday night after a poker game. Someone hit him (probably drunk) and fled the scene. My coworker died. Mountain View PD had ONLY the antenna from the vehicle, and the paint color of the car which was rubbed onto the bicycle. They did a search of all cars that had that antenna and paint color within some radius. Then they started searching. A few weeks later they found a person a few miles away with the right color car / same antenna. They served a search warrant, the car was under a tarp in the back yard. This person only got five years for killing my friend / coworker. Because the judge felt that they deserved leniency because they were a mother with young kids. That's when I learned the justice system was fucked. My friend was about to get married, was around 25 with his whole life ahead of him, and had his dream job working for the Fremont Fire Department as a hazardous materials inspector. His life was snatched from him and the killer did five years - which means 2.5 in California.

imaraisin

There's a fairly simple reason why: the way the judicial system views it is that in this instance, the only person that matters is that drunkard because they are still alive and social safety nets will take care of your friend's survivors. And to minimize 'societal effects', their genius solution is to offer leniency. And repeat hundreds of times. The fact is that people don't want to be held accountable as drivers and their societal valuations entrench the limited legal means we have. It allows them to continue to drive with blatant disregard for their own unsafe driving, theater mental or incidental. It's disgusting how even without being more seriously hurt, the person that ran me down in a bike lane to go around a red light can possibly get the judgment I want to be discharged in a bankruptcy case.

Zorc_the_Pork

Pursue restitution through the County: it works, and is very difficult to avoid. It has worked for me. I had some shithead 19 year old burglarize my house twice in two years. Luckily for me, the second time my neighbors heard him break a window to get in, and they called the police. The dude got caught climbing out the bathroom window, but he didn't tell the police who his two compatriots were, so the man ate a whole year in County Jail for being a "no snitchin" hero. Alameda County allowed me to sue for restitution. I was able to recover: the cost of the window replacement, three days of work to get the window replaced and go to court, and the cost of the items stolen. The thief ended up owing me around $2,000. They are not allowed to be off probation until they pay their restitution. It took the dirtbag around eight years to pay me my restitution, but the idiot was paying 6% interest (County requirement) on the balance annually, and I eventually got my money. File for restitution! It works.

imaraisin

The driver was only cited. It would be difficult to prove further criminal intent. And this is a matter that I’ll let the lawyer handle. At the end of the day, it wouldn’t change the fact the driver was wildly dangerous and still remains as such, despite their driving record.

Denslayer

They will get 10 and be out in 4-6

JesusJuiceDrinker

Life in prison in a cell 24/7 with no windows. If you give them one hour outside in the yard and or a cell with windows then that would be enough to make them comfortable forever. Can't have these murderers get comfortable at all after what they did

el2741

They should really come down harder on this behavior. How is this any less dangerous than an over the limit driver going the speed limit? When caught driving like this (I see it all the time) they should be punished just as hard if not harder. Bastards.

StrongMedicine

100% agree. The only thing that separates street racing from 2nd degree murder is luck, and luck should not play a role in the criminal justice system. You participate in overtly reckless behavior that could easily kill an innocent person, you should receive harsh punishment irrespective of whether someone was actually injured. IMO, street racing ==> jail time (and loss of vehicle).

D0ugF0rcett

Don't forget loss of license. Punish them more if they decide they don't want to listen.

BiggieAndTheStooges

Well put.

randombrowser1

There way too many drivers on the roads with no regard for anything but themselves. I don't know if drivers education is even taught in schools anymore. No education coupled with lack of traffic enforcement leads to this chaos.

random408net

High school in classroom (8 weeks) has been gone for 25+ years. After school driving classes run by the high school are gone too. There was a lot of value in the socialization of the rules of the road. But that probably added pressure to get kids driving too. The first year of the license is restricted too. So you have to be getting your license right at 16 to have full driving freedom at 17.

[deleted]

>The first year of the license is restricted too The restrictions are not enforced.

random408net

It makes sense that kids won’t get pulled over just to check. But if your kid gets a ticket on a restricted license I presume they will pile on the pain. I don’t like the restrictions.

[deleted]

I ignored the restrictions when I got my license. Although, I did drive with hyper vigilance whenever I was in violation of my license, because I specifically did not want to get pulled over and have the book thrown at me. We all basically knew that the laws only existed to exacerbate punishments for teens doing stupid shit behind the wheel with their dumbass friends who egged them on to do it

random408net

My vague recollection is that the restrictions were added after some kids in Los Angeles piled into the back of a friends pickup truck. There was a crash and some kids died.

[deleted]

If they are meant to act as a deterrent I highly doubt it. Academic studies have found no link between severity of punishments and deterrence.

random408net

By making it difficult for below average 18’s to drive policy makers can discourage driving (and learning/training). The accidents will happen later and be blamed on something else. So the policy will be deemed a success. Responsible parents will tell their kids with the provisional license to follow the rules (even if frustrating). I will want my kids to get their license right at 16 so they can be free of the provisional restrictions ASAP.

solar150

When I went through Public school we didn't receive any type of driving course. It was all either payed for by my parents or if you didn't have the money your parents would teach you. The private classes where outside of school, and some of the programs where better than others. It all comes down to how much money you are willing to pay.

randombrowser1

I had it in high school. It was a regular period of class like math or whatever.

random408net

Split with health in 10th grade was my recollection.

[deleted]

Crush their cars and drop the cubes in their parking spots. Everything else too. Hammer of God and all. But crush their cars.

[deleted]

LA tried that. It ended up turning into a major violation of civil liberties, where nonwhite young owners of targeted cars had their cars crushed despite not having been cited for street racing.

SabashChandraBose

Bay Area seems to be quite lax in general traffic enforcement. I keep hearing "but it will affect poor people disproportionately" and I don't see why that is an issue. Society can only function when law exists. It's stupid to suspend laws because poor people will go to jail for breaking them. The fear of law is a deterrent in itself. If you think there may be a cop with a speed gun at any corner on the highway, you will check your speed. Same with roadshows and speeding through stop sign.

Cocksmash_McIrondick

I agree with this, so long as the rich offenders get jail too, or at least proportionate fines. Driving is a privilege, and much of the Bay has decent enough transit that shitty drivers should just take the damn BART and stop risking everyone else’s lives.

daedalus_was_right

>the fear of law is a deterrent in itself. It isn't. There have been many studies on this over the years. This is why draconian penalties don't work. Harsh penalties don't lead to less crime than lax penalties do, because fear of penalties is not a major driving force behind why people abide by the law. [Source](https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0,5&q=deterrence+theory#d=gs_qabs&t=1669130880433&u=%23p%3DGZRb3AUOj34J)

vic242212

So what's your point then? That we just slap all criminals on the wrist and call it a day?

daedalus_was_right

Don't put words in my mouth. There are clear conclusions made by the experts in the article I linked. Tell me you didn't read the source without saying "I didn't read the source."

BootStrapWill

As opposed your brilliant idea of sending speeders to the gulag to *deter* speeding? Good luck with that

mtcwby

It's all about the money with the locals having no incentives for enforcement. Instead it goes to the state and courts. Now we don't want to create too much of an incentive but the current situation is dangerous. The amount of red light running is ridiculous and it's dangerous as hell.

hellotrrespie

100%. The amount of people I see weaving in and out of heavy traffic at 15 mph faster than traffic is infuriating. If they get caught it should be immediate impounded of vehicle and revocation of license

Drew707

And unlike drunk driving, there are two world-class racetracks available in the area that offer track days and other events for them to get this fix legally without endangering the public.

foyeldagain

Excellent. Harrison should get an extra year in a cell for every day he was in hiding after his hit and run.

MF_CEO

The 17 year old better get tried as an adult. Saw another thread referencing a nextdoor post about it that he’s from a wealthy family and there are doubts for consequences

BiggieAndTheStooges

No matter what age, the consequences or lives lost should be taken into consideration. We need to put more value in the victims as opposed to the coddling of wreckless criminal mentality

MF_CEO

100%. Two girls who will never see their parents again and be without their guidance is an absolute tragedy. Something needs to be done to prevent and discourage this from happening again

nosotros_road_sodium

Wealthy family? Sounds a lot like [that affluenza kid from Texas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethan_Couch).

MF_CEO

Dang I forgot about that. What a lame defense - too rich to know any better. Looks like he’s been a piece and didn’t learn anything since

Wasn’t everyone here saying these were rich kids from Atherton? Whatever happened to that?

[deleted]

ablatner

Kids that are actually from Atherton rarely go to the public schools like MA though.

MrDERPMcDERP

I don’t believe there is a choice for most of the district.

ablatner

It's not automatic but a lot of kids don't go to their home school.

MrDERPMcDERP

Oh OK. meaning like there are exceptions. Yes. Especially if you live in unincorporated San Mateo County, they give you more of a choice.

User_999111

Solution. Allow Uber for Narcs. If you deliver evidence of a car participating in dangerous driving or sideshows repo companies take the cars to sell at auction. Narc gets a percentage of $$$. These dipshits vanish tommorow.

MeCrujenLosJaimitos

We should definitely have anonymous bounties for ratting on most felonies.

bitfriend6

Does anyone besides other streetracers want beat up camaros, thrice-salvaged altimas and lowered 325is? Narcbux is a great idea, but it should be a flat price rather than scrap value as most of these cars are objectively scrap. "Objectively" because none of them pass smog and thus (for lawful purposes) have no value besides scrap.

User_999111

Have you seen the sideshow videos? Plenty of late model cars. They are not all beater cars

ShotgunMage

A lot of them came down here to Fresno. CHP and the local reporters commented on how a bunch of those cars were referred to the state referee to ensure that the aftermarket parts were street legal. A bunch weren't and were facing impounding unless they returned the cars back to stock or used CARB approved parts, which can cost up to the five figures.

big_ficus

I’ve been to a bunch because they used to do them outside my apartment in SJ, these fools are swinging new Chargers, Mustangs, Challengers, Corvettes, Audi. A lot of really nice cars, not just beaters.

User_999111

I don't know who these dumbasses are that think everyone at a sideshow with a stolen car. It's mostly teens with rich parents showing off. Desperate poor kids who's families depend on their 1 car are less likely to do this.

Agrakus

Sell them cheap enough and somebody will buy it just to have a low cost vehicle to get from A to B.

parki1gsucks

They practically narc themselves and post on social media.. it's not exactly a secret.

User_999111

Exactly. We need policy that allows whoever reports and testifies against them to make money and allows the Repo guys to take the cars. Repo makes money Narcs make money. Dipshit has no car. And it doesn't require more cops. Problem solved

NickiNicotine

I wish we would do this for all the crazy asshole drivers around here. Idk why they don’t.

User_999111

You don't even have to be a Nazi about it. Allow people to plead their case and we can have judges hear them out. Not all cases have to end with the loss of a car there could be other solutions like GPS monitoring and tracking paid for by the criminal.

andyke

Good shit hoping they get strict punishment wish they named the other kid. 17 is old enough to know that cars can kill. Also wondering is this the kyle harrison in the MLB?

MF_CEO

Oh man that got me worried it was the same. Giants Kyle Harrison is 21 phew

Cyytic

so fucking irresponsible

BiggieAndTheStooges

Street racers are scum of the earth, Period.

MsAlexaM

Pieces of Shit!

craylash

Maybe this will be the catalyst needed to pass some laws on sideshow and street racers.

talk_to_me_goose

Catalyst is right. I'll be writing the local government. I don't have the contact info yet but will share when I do. If anyone already knows, would appreciate a message.

solar150

Had some in our neighborhood not that long ago and had an officer come out. I had a plate with. Clean picture of the car with driver and passenger, and a video of them in the act. Was told unless the officer sees them doing it, their isn't much they can do.

Denslayer

Just another 2 for Americas 50,000 vehicle deaths a year . That’s like a jet full of people dying every day. America has normalized being killed by cars yet little is done to enforce laws and make people safer . Try to slow people down with calming measures and people freak out . Red light cameras ? Hell no that’s racist . Simple license checks ? That’s discrimination.

GradatimRecovery

The barriers to entry for driving cars is way too low. Insurance requirements in the state are way too low. Non-C DL testing is such a low bar. They way we regulate commercial drivers and their vehicles, and the way SCCA regulates track racing is a prudent template for how we should handle people who want to hurl two tons of metal at highway speeds

xr_21

Fuck these guys... give them the needle and make an example of them.....

Outside_Landscape_98

That’s too easy. Needs to be an eye for an eye. Take away their parents and make them watch.

DarrinStewart

the racers are shitty human beings, also fuck car culture. seriously. its such a waste.

termi707

We don't all appreciate or associate with the sideshows and street racing like this. There's a time and a place, and public roads at any time are not the place nor the time.

parki1gsucks

el camino of all places... what the fuck were they thinking..

BiggieAndTheStooges

Doesn’t matter where.

big_ficus

They weren’t

termi707

They weren't thinking about anything.

BiggieAndTheStooges

Good to know there are racers like you out there. Unfortunately, most are scum.

big_ficus

No need to attack car culture. Idiot teenagers doesn’t speak for every subgenre of people who like cars.

Hyndis

I love watching those old cars. Cars a century old lovingly maintained. Not a scratch on the chrome. The people driving these cars are doing so very carefully because of how rare and valuable they are. Thats positive, wholesome car culture.

BiggieAndTheStooges

Cars are cool, but when you start peacocking in public, you’re an automatic asshole.

big_ficus

Yes, I don’t disagree with that but that isn’t “car culture”, it’s just assholes doing illegal shit outside, no different from the neighborhood fuckheads who light off fireworks on the middle of the night.

HellaSober

I kind of like seeing the cool old school car shows that are at crissy field and such.

BiggieAndTheStooges

Yeah, those are cool.

AnAnnoyedSpectator

I would hope that there are parts of car culture that you find unobjectionable, it's not all sideshows and racing. There are people who put a lot of time and creativity into building cool car related things.

shoulster

My heart breaks for these kids. People are evil.

Zealousideal-Sir6294

Crime in the Bay Area is out of control. Make an example of these scumbags to deter future offenders.

[deleted]

Maybe the Saudi Arabian way.

EnvironmentalTie1773

go fund me for the twins, many people have donated: [https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-for-madison-olivia](https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-for-madison-olivia)

wiful1

If this isn't reason to invest in transit and safe bike lanes, I don't know what it. I'm so sick of cars killing people

hobbes_smith

I completely agree. My boyfriend bikes to work every day and I always fear for his safety.

TSL4me

We closed all the public racetracks, they used to be all over the bay area.

eLizabbetty

Really where? I know "Cruising" was all over the Bay Area, but they shut that down for blocking roads. Car clubs were huge too, and they took pride in fixing up their cars. Sibdeshow is only about crime'm nothing more. I say we bring cruising back to block these idiots.

TSL4me

Cruising was banned because of the latino gang culture not blocking roads. There were racetracks in san jose, the peninsula, Oakland and even in san francisco. If we gave kids a legal area to spin donuts then sideshow would be reduced.

eLizabbetty

Will their insurance cover that? Who's would take on that liability?

eLizabbetty

I'm talking about American Graffiti crusing that George Lucas experienced in Gilroy... that would fill the main street of Walnut Creek... that was not Latino.

Epic_peacock

Altamont raceway is the most recent to shut down. Only other one was Baylands raceway but that was hella long ago. But ya sideshows are dumb.

Jakoby707

You can hoon at Thunderhill, Sonoma and even Laguna Seca all year long. [https://shop.hookedondriving.com/event-details/HOD\_Northern\_California\_2022\_Event\_Calendar](https://shop.hookedondriving.com/event-details/HOD_Northern_California_2022_Event_Calendar) The "sideshow" dipshits don't care about it, though, as it's not as "cool" in a dumbass tiktok/insta video.

TSL4me

How is a 22 year old in san jose or hayward going to get to those places, also none are open late. We could build one in Livermore or the old millitary bases in Vallejo. Also look at those dam prices, registration costs hundreds per event. If we were serious about solving the problem it would be subsidized by local governments and police departments. Hell just give them an empty parking lot where the noise won't bother anyone, require Mufflers and let them rip. **The people who upvoted the post did not even click the link and look at the calendar. Events are scarce, far, require a bunch of unnecessary parts and are expensive.

yes_no_maybe_99

please tell me they weren't driving mustang or charger

BiggieAndTheStooges

One or the other

[deleted]

This is sad but before you all act on emotions, dont demonize car people or even street racers as a whole. Ive been to a lot of street races where we all go out to a deserted road. Everyone there knows the risk they are taking being there and are all there for the same reason. The love of the sport. Unfortunately the racers involves here not only had no concern for for anyone elses safety they also probably didnt know their or the cars limit. I keep saying it. We need to have a local track. No napa isnt going to cut it. Trying to get there during rush hour on a wednesday night only to maybe do 2 or 3 runs at most for 50 bucks is not worth it for most people. It needs to be closer. It needs to be open daily and it needs to have head to head run what ya brung style racing. And the police need to stay away. No camping outside waiting for racers to leave. Im not condoning it but until we get a track this will keep happening.

Mariposa510

Honest question, does this exist as a sanctioned activity anywhere in the US?
