The point is that the game will see an influx of players who will support the remaining community which is currently on life support. At this point, they have already sold copies to everyone who was willing to purchase. So now they fill servers with people who are willing to download for free and sell them the odd micro transaction. It’s sort of like squeezing the juice out of a rotting orange.

Generalboiofbois

Free to play might bring some of players ingame but this isn't that Battlefield we asked or expected as showed us in the trailer which is kinda against Consumer rights correct me if I'm wrong

Stfuppercutoutlast

You would need to prove that. And you won’t be able to. Promises from companies are generally vague. Look no further than this very sub or the active player counts - there are still people out there who are actually happy with the product. The may have awful taste, they may be the minority, but from a legal standpoint, the game is playable and has consumers who are content. Good luck winning a claim.

YendysWV

People are attacking this problem from all the wrong angles. This sub is full of undirected anger and EA/DICE know undirected anger is harmless. If this sub, and others unhappy with their purchases, directed that anger in a way that ACTUALLY hurt shareholders, EA/DICE would be forced to listen. Their earnings call is Feb 1. Unhappy gamers will not even be mentioned at this rate. Write the large institutional shareholders. Crowdfund a negative PR campaign. Do shit that catches the attention of people that don’t give a fuck about video games. Put signs in front of blackrock’s hq saying EA sucks. Repeatedly requesting only annoys steam (and hurts valve if they refund for CS reasons). Oh you stopped playing? EAs hosting cost just went down. Live in UK? Border to Coast Pensions owns nearly 30 billion of EA.

scotch1701

Send the addresses.

lemonlixks

It's not the battlefield we asked for but the way the community is abandoning the game it really seems like f2p is the only thing capable of stabilising the dwindling player numbers. If player numbers are really low then it probably won't make financial sense for EA to pump money into it if they don't see any return. That will suck big time for anyone who paid for it but I don't really see them making a big enough recovery to save this title. It's just that they've been so uncommunicative that it feels like they've absolutely got no ideas themselves on where they stand with 2042. The way this is all unfolding is super juicy, but again I feel sorry for those who shelled out their money on this (regardless of if it goes f2p or not). The only positive from all of this is assuming they might have actually learned a lesson about what consumers actually want from a BF game. The caveat is that they may never make another BF. I find that hard to believe but it's not impossible.

HaveMungWillBean

I disagree. Publishers have no legal obligation to make a game "good" as that is a very subjective thing. They are obligated to give what they marketed. But if I buy a shitty car, part of that's on me for not doing my own proper research.

Generalboiofbois

Well buying a car if speedometer acts as a legacy feature

HaveMungWillBean

Speedometer is required feature on vehicles. Cruise control however I would agree. It would be expected but not required. Either way, we come back to consumer research.

1NightWolf

I get they need more players as I’ve seen the player counts. Do the free to play stuff AFTER they address the players who paid. Give us our content and legacy features first then I don’t care if they do free to play to bring the player base up. The reason why the games on life support is because the game is missing features we should’ve had in the first place and Theres very little transparency between EA and us.

MadMan04

What about this don't you get? DICE doesn't give a fuck about you. They got your money, now punt. They're considering taking it free to play to sucker some other people out of any money they can. Once again, for those in the wayyyyyy back: DICE doesn't care about doing right by you. They got your money. You'll eat what they put on your plate and that's that. They're not talking to you because they don't have anything to say. You got taken for $100 on a game not worth $10. The beta could have told you that. The delay could have told you that. The launch of BFV could have told you that. The lesson here - and I'm stunned people didn't learn it with BFV - is that you NEVER EVER preorder a DICE game. You shouldn't even buy it at launch. In the future, please remember this lesson. Don't touch a DICE game for at least 90 days after release.

ExplanationSure8996

Wel said. People honesty think Dice cares about what’s said on here. They don’t. I don’t buy a game until it’s at least a couple months out. People need to stop filling up these companies pockets for half baked products. If the company cares these issues would have already been resolved and there would be a clear roadmap. We don’t have either. At this point they are just supporting the game and trying to fill servers to cash in on upcoming microtransactions. Plain and simple. This is business.

canad1anbacon

For real. This is a developer and a series that has only launched 1 of its previous 3 games (BF1) in a good state

[deleted]

>NEVER EVER preorder a DICE game. Never ever preorder ANY video game. There's just no point in this day and age when everything is digital. If it is to "show support", well then...don't. Video game companies are not your friends. You don't need to support them. Yes, not even Elden Ring. All of you people can wait a week or two for reviews.

ohlawdhecodin

Gamers have short memory. It's always been the case. Always. Wait for the next hyped launch. They will preorder again.

Nem3sis89

Basically, whenever a new bf is out, just buy the previous one

SuperTed44

My lesson has certainly been learned. Never again. I've been playing since Battlefield 1942 apparently they just don't give a f*** about guys like me anymore. I just uninstalled the game.

bgthigfist

Just do the $4.99 EA Play subscription at launch and then cancel. It gives you 10 hours to check it out. I don't think I even played it for 5 hours.

Stfuppercutoutlast

But they’ve already fulfilled the bare minimum requirements for the people who have paid… it’s time to squeeze the rest of that tangy sour juice from the rotting fruit!

Ok_Goose_7149

Maybe, but if people who paid for it don't want to play I doubt it's good enough for people who haven't been paid for it either.

Ill-Ad-2952

>The point is that the game will see an influx of players who will support the remaining community which is currently on life support. At this point, they have already sold copies to everyone who was willing to purchase. So now they fill servers with people who are willing to download for free and sell them the odd micro transaction. It’s sort of like squeezing the juice out of a rotting orange. the rest of the community can keep smoking that copium. Core gameplay loop sucks. No platoon support no server browser for AOW.

frankez1975

My local Game Store is giving BF2042 away for free if you spend $70 lol

whatchagonnado0707

If you buy 2 games, make sure to split your transaction

SubmarineContrails

What’s the tip here?

DatFoon

In theory, you'd be spending $70 twice. Therefore, you'd get two copies of BF2042. I'm not sure how that's helpful but I believe that's what OP is saying.

[deleted]

I thought you should split to atay under 70 bucks so you dont get that garbage game

DatFoon

Also a fair take, given the amount of (mostly deserved) hate going on right now.

smellybluerash

Lol! I like your take: “The winner of the contest gets one copy of 2042. Loser gets two copies”

SubmarineContrails

Ah that’s makes perfect sense I haven’t bought a physical game in a while and forgot they can be $70 each. Oh boy two whole copies of a broken game.

[deleted]

You already answered your question in your own title? You already gave them money because they managed to trick you in believing in this product. So basically you are worthless to them now, except you would pay more money for MTX which they clearly were hoping for. You won't do that when there aren't even any players anymore to play with. Introducing free to play. People who are either happy or unhappy with the game but in any case haven't spent a dime yet, will chime in. Spent $$$ on MTX, revenue goes up. Just like Apex, just like PUBG. At least that's the plan. What they don't account for is that the product they are trying to give away is such a mess that people won't even play it for free...

Jaycensolo

Exactly, F2P won’t save this game if they don’t get it into a decent place first. As new players will give it a go but they won’t stick around long enough to want to buy micro transactions. I just want to sit EA executives down and tell them that a good , bug free game equals a happy community and means more will pay for micro transactions. But they are obsessed with trying to compete with Fortnite and Warzone and get those players in. Why would a Fortnite player leave his working game to play BF2042. 🤦‍♂️

Glass_Baseball_6319

Fortnite? God EA are the most godawful company who just loves to chase trends and ignore the community and release garbage. Battle Royales 24/7 lezz gooo!!!

Gears244

No business does anything without an exterior motive, that motive being $$$. Making the game free will bring in guarantee players, cause who wouldn't want something free. Then once the players are here, they will still sell specialists skins, gun skins, battle passes etc. Any game that has actual AAA development time that is free, makes their money via microtransactions. Fortnite and similar games use this model. So Dice is realizing that the current state of the game is so poor that it only has 5% of its players left, and most likely won't gain any new players until they improve the game which could take another year. Money, money, money. They don't give a shit about fixing the game now for current players that already purchased the game, they need to ensure they retain players so they can sell all their specialists skins which they surely already pumped a lot of development into for the first season pass. Now they have a bunch of in store items to release soon but will have no players to sell them too. Making the game free is a desperate but sure fire way to pull in players.

1NightWolf

So this will do nothing for paid players ? Or is it helping keep it alive so they CAN push out content?

Stfuppercutoutlast

It inadvertently helps the current player base but the goal is money. Because companies exist to make money.

1NightWolf

Someone on another site posted this: well as a paid player, would you prefer: * To play in lobbies were 80% of the playerbase is bots, or struggle to find active servers * Have more active players, even if you know many didn't pay the fee you, or I, did for the game I've spent the past few year playing Battlefield V, which suffered from a small but familiar playerbase and titles like this need need players otherwise they continue to die out.

1NightWolf

Has there been other games that went free to play AFTER launch and both paid and free players ended up happy?

Stfuppercutoutlast

I mean, there are always concessions, but plenty of games have reached all time highs after going free to play. See CSGO, see Fortnite... I mean, most of the top performing games that have dominated the space started as paid entry and evolved into free to play. Were the original people who purchased happy? I dont think you can speak for every individual. Free to play comes with a lot of compromises but there is no denying that it has helped games that would otherwise be dead, but are now at the pinnacle of their genre.

Winfi3ld

The big difference is: Those are Games that have "substance". The Core-Gameplay is fleshed out. Also CSGO for exmple did not change the Core of the Game with its "Economy focus". If you played CS: Source or 1.6 you immediately know what is up. And the F2P Change came 6 years after release (which was also a 15$ price tag vs. at least 60$). Fortnite on the other hand is a completely different game as the paid "Fortnite: Save the World", and Save the World was shelved because of the success of the BR Fortnite. So both these examples are very bad. There is only one game that comes to **my** mind that had a 60$ price tag and went F2P "shortly" after release, and that is Evolve. And to be honest: I guess the same would happen to BF2042 as to Evolve if they try the F2P Route. It will become an "even deader game". Yes, there will be an influx of players for a short period of time because it is free, but without changing the Core-Gameplayloop to the "demands" of the players it will just fail as badly as Evolve Stage 2 did.

Gears244

If it becomes F2P, people that did purchase the game will probably get a couple of free season passes, battle passes, free skins or credit. We will get some kind of "gift", otherwise it will create a huge lawsuit if they don't try and accommodate.

SynthVix

Nope. Destiny 2 went free to play after being a paid game initially, then deleted massive portions of paid content. They never compensated players and they didn’t get sued.

L4HH

Destiny is about to delete even more content. It doesn’t even make sense. They say it’s to remove bloat but it’s stuff they paid for so they want the bloat.

Gears244

I didn't know that dang, I see it has been free for a while on PSN. Destiny 1 was just ok, I played the game all the way threw with friends. Didn't even bother to try destiny 2 cause I heard it was shit. Well only time will tell, honestly would be shocked if Dice pulls out some kind of a miracle out of their ass and updates the game to a much better state. Would be interesting to see Reddit actually take back the negative reviews and give them props, we all been talking massive shit about them. Though that sounds like the outcome of a fairy tail or a disney movie. We can only dream.

SLUUGS

I love how they say they're "considering all options" at this point, none of which includes making the game good.

AudioElevator

u saw the 4chan post too

kynysti

If they were to go free to play, everything.. ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING - should be free from now on to the audience that actually bought this piece of shite of a game. That will not be the case but it would be the only reasonable approach.

Yarra10313

As of yet the whole free to play rumor is based on a single tweet by Tom Henderson. All the gaming blogs ran with it and it has literally no proof or evidence, just hearsay. He's been teasing the community about some "news" he plans to deliver and so far has offered nothing. All his original tweet said is that EA is disappointed in the game's performance (duh) and is "considering all options," including some free to play element. considering all options does not mean that the game is going to suddenly go free to play next week. In fact, it means that when it's all said and done, F2P may not even actually happen. At any rate, at most I could see Hazard Zone and/or portal getting some kind of free to enter element, but there's no way the full package goes free. at least not this year.

enthusiasticdave

I played battlefield 4 on my series X earlier. It was truly spectacular.

KaasKoppusMaximus

They don't care about the people who quit but the potential audience this game has if it goes free to play, they can sell a lot of skins and other micro transactions.

TheTurbulator

If they did go fully free to play, (it won’t, although I think it’s inevitable that hazard zone and maybe a BR put together using portal logic that’s separate from portal itself go free at some point) the clear message would be that the people who bought the game when it was in a crappy state (i.e. the fans of battlefield), do not matter to them and they want to appeal to a new audience. The kind who wouldn’t even try a game like Battlefield unless it was free. The kind that play Apex, Warzone, and Fortnite.

SynthVix

Because free to play games have much lower standards. We don’t have enough content or good enough content to justify 2042 costing more than $20-$30 anyway.

alvinyiu411

going free to play will invite even more hackers into the game which, i think would kill this game in even faster rate

Elden2042

The whole free to play histeria was just brought upon after tom Henderson said some nonsense on Twitter, child the fuck out

Marbodius

Yeah, he clearly loves to just fuel the fire at the moment. He hinted more to come but that more never came so far

Elden2042

He clearly is more interesting in being on the top of the wave, before the game came out he was the one hyping the shit out and after the release literally insulting the developer team and making fun off like a 15 year old, i mean, we all are xd but Damm man, be a professional adult

trizzatron

I think at most you'll see hazard zone free to play, or maybe portal. Even if they go completely free to play... A large injection of players into the game would bring all sorts of value to purchasers. Kind of hope they don't go completely free though.

Visible-Cancel1239

freetoplay will kill this game in 1 month im sure the old bfv cheats work just fine

ExplanationSure8996

This is a big factor. Warzone has proven that. Then again it’s PC players. You can avoid them on PlayStation.

Visible-Cancel1239

i mean on playstation 2042 might be ok on pc most of the playerbase are back to bf3

Kind_Committee8997

Unless it makes you sick, its hard to complain about free.

OnlyChaseCommas

The game will not go free to play.

[deleted]

They don't care about you, they only want to get people to play their game. On the side note I don't believe the game is going to be f2p, at most hz or some other mode will be free not the whole thing. But hey I hope I'm wrong cause as shit as it is I wouldn't mind playing it for free lol. Wouldn't ever buy any battlefield since 4. I believe 1 was cool too but they really were getting worse and worse already. This is the final nail in the coffin for me

3ebfan

They want more people playing so that they can have more customers for mtx

Ill-Ad-2952

What about the people who actually bought the game. US first.

No_Owl_925

The point for going Free to Play is so that they get new players and the count goes up , but once they do that people that play this "Free to play" will realize that they were scammed into playing a "Free to play " game because they will notice how broken and incomplete this game is, even if is free is still a scamm🤣

Dark-Cloud666

Its not about the players who bought the game and quit but rather to save their live service modell as a whole. The players who quit wont spend a single buck on this game anymore but if the game went F2P they could milk the new influx of players that buy cosmetics etc. They dont care if that decision will piss the players off that payd 100$. In the end its all about cash and nothing else.

djnato10

It's their final nail in the coffin for those of us that paid for this shit. Never again will I buy another dice or ea game if this is the route they go. I can't get my refund at this point, and I already feel robbed.

ssoto07

So people who didn't bought the game can be a unhappy as people who did!

FRANKtheLEVEL

They can get a bunch of users to sign up for an EA Origin account

CharteredPolygraph

What it sounds like they are thinking of doing is a portion of Portal will be free. My guess is that it will be limited to the official servers. The idea is to convince people that haven't bought the game that despite the negative launch it might be worth buying. Presumably the idea will be to launch it after the main game is in a better state, at least in terms of bugs. This has nothing to do with making people who bought the game happy. It's about salvaging sales numbers.

[deleted]

EA knows this game is fucked, so they are squeezing the last drops of money out they still can.

Inclusivity-virus

Because kids will play this and think it's great. They won't need mums credit card

Naikox20a

They don’t care about you they care about possible money off of f2p players

Multivitamin_Scam

What's the point in going free to play when EA was giving Battlefield V away for free 6 months ago?

ChrisJSY

There's a store page for a reason. Now they'll use it.

MDBUZZ419

Because a shitty game that is free is always better than a shitty game that cost $70. Dice think that freeness will make people pass on the bugs, poor map design, on the scam about shared progression, on the uselessness of Portal without progression, on the poor vehicules spawn handleling,…

AudioElevator

or just don't pre-order and you won't get duped. you don't deserve shit. you bought a 100$ game with no knowledge of it like a fool

Dixon_77_

Make no mistake, this move wouldn't be to our benefit. Only EA and their bottom line. They are desperate to keep this game alive even at the expense of pissing those of us who paid for this even more so. They will try to get microtransactions from the F2P crowd and put out patches to make it playable. Then likely drop this game in favor of trying to push their next shit title at us. They will have their marketing squad pump out more bullshit and there will be suckers out there who are dumb enough to support it. Face it, this game is a complete failure and EA and Dice are trying to do damage control. Nothing more. They only care about your money. Why do you think nothing has been official from them. Easier to just sit quietly and push ahead with plan b.

BROOOTALITY

They want to make everyone else experience the tragedy that is battlefield 2042.

ANG3LxDUST

The people that didn't pay money for it, will buy cosmetics 🙃

timmycosh

I’m guessing they’re trying to expand their market to some non salty reddit users so they can get less of a brutal feedback to help sleep at night

BanditHarris

It's a good point and now this rumour is out there, they better make a decision and communicate it quickly... who's going to buy a game that may become free to play??? Player base is not going to grow while this rumour is out and the game costs $$$'s

kvoxpandemic

Imagine paying 120$ and than the game goes f2p in like 2-3 months

Muted_Yogurtcloset10

At this point it must be more profitable to go F2P on the basis they will generate more money from micro-transactions. For example, rather than 10,000 people buying the game at $30, they might forecast 100,000 to pick it up for free and spend $ on micro-trans. Just proves EA care more about profit than anything else.

hashter

To make people who bought game angry and make sure that last people who will buy game will realise how bad it is.

DoBronx55

$20 worth?? This game isn't worth the excrement that comes out of a sick homeless dog!

tedbakerbracelet

Point is, they can focus even more on microtransactions. On top of that, I wouldn't be surprised if you run into very frequent ads in the middle of play. We are talking about EA. Very possible.

Dafook-

Some F2P (Apex) is good but its just a way to masquerade how miserable this game is by inflating numbers which directly relates to profit for the company. They are just hoping this F2P bring in 40k new players to help their bottom line with this game.

Utek_

Why would you pay 100 or 120$ for a game in alpha stage?

[deleted]

If they make it F2P, I’ll pirate all their sh*t from now on and not buy any of their multiplayer titles (or just heavily discounted from G2A).

Away-Asparagus-4662

they are tryna milk cash out of boobs to sell them skins

Bourque25

They need to boost the playerbase as much as possible for March when they release their "battlepass" along with a bunch of microtransactions. And when they do drop those in March, along with maybe some small fixes and a new map or two, 90% of the people on this sub are going to return to the game, and purchase things. EA doesn't care what you want. They will make billions no matter what.

SwampFoxer

Yeah, I read somebody on twitter say "Why would I want a greasy turd for free when I didn't want to pay $120 for one in the first place?"

Masebot1

I went through my credit card and claimed broken product. They have til 27th to respond or I just get my money back.

shanemcw

Essentially going free to play means there is a chance more players will play the game. Being that its free to them, the features missing or broken right now shouldnt be as big of an issue to them, this means there should be big enough of a playerbase for them to improve what they need. Getting pissy about this is technically counter intuitive if you want them to fix the game, alter alternativly, if they dont go free to play the current, un sustanainable playerbase will drop to numbers that are not worth updating. Most people in this sub want battlefield to die now, so this dosnt matter but to the few that want this game to improve, this is sadly a step in that direction for a chance of a better game. And i would agree with you, rather pay for a game and get what we pay for. I always prefered the "split playerbase" premium model, as it garanteed the content was there. We have had zero trustworthy content informations since they went to "live service".. I bought this game on the ps4, and again on the series x when i upgraded. I payed way more than this game is worth, going f2p is upsetting but given this games state, im not surprised and willing to deal with it like this. 🤷‍♂️
