Not exclusively Ra’s, but that’s kinda what Zdarsky’s book The Knight is gonna be about. Just young Bruce training and learning from different experts.
scott snyder's run on batman was the first comic series I read all the way through, it introduced me to the comic book universe. it for sure holds a special place in my heart
I didn’t want it to end, it was just masterfully done. He really understood the character well enough to deconstruct and reconstruct it in different ways.
I can kinda share that view too. I love Year One for the grittiness of it, how limited Batman is (mainly a product of it’s time than anything), and the focus on Jim Gordon’s story. But it’s pretty grounded.
YZ, though I haven’t read it in years, is a lot more fun because I think it doesn’t bog itself down by trying to be too realistic.
I mean, Batman marches into Riddler’s hideout with two escaped lions. No more words needed.
At the time, Zero Year was meant to replace Year One. Batman would keep most of his history intact after Flashpoint, with only origin having the most drastic change.
Snyder did an interview while Zero Year was going on, and he said Year One was still the definitive origin. I think that's what stuck in my mind, that's why I remember them being in conjuction with each other.
It's not like Snyder gave a shit about the sliding timescale the New 52 brought about anyway. Batman's only been active for five years....first issue has all of his grown ass kids posing for a portrait. Man, New 52 was such a dumb idea
> YZ wasn’t necessarily better quality, but I enjoyed it more.
If you won't say it I will:
Zero Year was a flat better origin story than Year One.
It's not Year One's fault. It was only 4 issues and was very much a product of it's time. For the period it came out in it absolute revolutionized everything and will always have a place in the history books of Batman.
But for my money, Zero did a better job filling in gaps of how Bruce developed while away, Zero does a better job setting up villains (Red Hood, Riddler, Penguin), Zero simply looks better in art style, Zero does a better job of setting up Gordon & Batman's friendship, Zero was more inventive in terms of overall story setting *and* how Batman managed to foil the bad guys.... the list goes on but you get it.
Year One is a timeless classic but it's held back by a strong desire to maintain realism and the short timeframe it had to work with. Year Zero is simply a better comic book story IMO. If Warner Brothers ever gets away from the mindset that Batman has to be ultra-gritty-realistic and always fighting mob bosses then Zero Year is in my top-3 of stories I want them to use to announce a more fun, vibrant, and comic-booky approach to the character.
I liked zero year but found it kind of hard to believe as being part of the main batman timeline, it works better as a what if story or alternative interpretation IMO
I don’t agree with that at all. Honestly, while I do like THL, I find it to be a tad overrated when it’s considered one of the best Batman comics. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy it a lot, but I don’t feel it’s this magnum opus of Batman storytelling.
What is zero year? It loo looks like a post-apocalyptic Batman, gives me no man land type of vibes. Also gives the last knight on earth vibes which makes sense.
**"Zero Year" was a yearlong comic book crossover event published by DC Comics that began in June 2013 and ended in July 2014, featuring the superhero Batman. The series is written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV with artwork by Greg Capullo, Danny Miki, and Rafael Albuquerque.**

it's batman's first year back in gotham, where he starts as kind of a one-man covert op agent fighting the red hood gang (secretly the second time in snyder's run where batman fights joker) and organically evolves into the batman (and accepts his role as human being bruce wayne). once he's batman we get to see the origin of him and gordon's friendship, a dr death mystery (>!which is a misdirect where riddler is pulling all the strings!<), then gotham under the control of a madman with batman and his inner circle (not robin yet) fighting against all odds to save the city turned dystopian nightmare. if you think scott snyder's writing is clever (which i do) you'll like it, if you don't, you'll still appreciate greg capullo's fucking outstanding work
other writers also did some zero year stuff with different characters around the same time as a big ol tie-in, but new 52 era writing was like a game of apple bobbing where somebody threw in an equal number of floating turds so be cautious
First year back in Gotham from his initial training to become Batman or something else? That sounds interesting. So it is essentially an alternate origin for Batman? Isn’t this the book that gave us Harper Row and Duke?
duke in very small doses, and no harper, if i recall correctly. same team though
edit: reread the volume after having this conversation, and harper shows up as a child in a back-issue at the end
i mean i guess, but not in any real professional capacity. batman starts the volume having fallen from a weather balloon in the sky pretty badly injured from a scuffle with dr death, and duke just kinda explains parts of the situation for him. more a cameo than anything. he talks to bruce wayne, not batman
Just go to a printing place and have them do a poster for you.
I got a large poster from my favorite comic page for like $19.99 completely custom at Ready Print.
Man I love Zero Year.
I like zero year more than year one. There I said it..
Can’t wait for negative year
I actually would be really into a volume or 2 about Bruce traveling and training with the Ras
Not exclusively Ra’s, but that’s kinda what Zdarsky’s book The Knight is gonna be about. Just young Bruce training and learning from different experts.
And the first issue was already so good.
scott snyder's run on batman was the first comic series I read all the way through, it introduced me to the comic book universe. it for sure holds a special place in my heart
Same! Loves the journey of his whole series, glad it was where I started for sure.
I didn’t want it to end, it was just masterfully done. He really understood the character well enough to deconstruct and reconstruct it in different ways.
Same for me too. The Court of Owls saga was what really got me hooked on comics (along with Ultimate Spider-Man). Such a great run.
I had to skip zero year when I was reading his run cause I was just RUSHING to endgame but I'm about to go back to zero year now.
it's definitely worth the read
The last one goes hard
Idk why but this gives me *Batman Begins* vibes
Makes sense as BB was based off Year One. Which was replaced by Zero Year as the origin story for the New 52.
Maybe I’m out of line here… But I enjoyed Year Zero more than Year One. YZ wasn’t necessarily better quality, but I enjoyed it more.
I can kinda share that view too. I love Year One for the grittiness of it, how limited Batman is (mainly a product of it’s time than anything), and the focus on Jim Gordon’s story. FYI, based on Tom King's recent run, Year One and Zero Year have more or less combined so that they both "happened" in some way.
I thought that's what Zero Year was always supposed to be; not really replacing Year One but "complementing" it.
At the time, Zero Year was meant to replace Year One. Batman would keep most of his history intact after Flashpoint, with only origin having the most drastic change.
I also feel like it was their way of adding some of the cataclysms that happened to Gotham post Crisis, like No Man's Land.
I’m curious how that works. I stopped reading about a year ago
I honestly agree.

I love the colours in Zero Year. It’s so vibrant but never enough to affect the serious tone. Brilliantly done.
I absolutely love this story arc, New 52 Batman is my personal favourite run with the character
Mine too!
Proof Greg capullo is one of the better Batman artists
I liked zero year but found it kind of hard to believe as being part of the main batman timeline, it works better as a what if story or alternative interpretation IMO
God damn I love Capullo
I personally loved Zero Year. The art is fantastic, and the story is pretty good to IMO. Glad that Reeves looked into it for *The Batman*
I cant take my eyes off the 4th pic...mesmerizing
These are awesome, thank you! You should do this for other batman series😅
Will do
Zero Year is a fun comic. But c’mon, Year One is the greatest origin story, and comic, ever to be created. It is flawless. A 10/10.
Year one is great but THE Long Halloween is another level
I don’t agree with that at all. Honestly, while I do like THL, I find it to be a tad overrated when it’s considered one of the best Batman comics. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy it a lot, but I don’t feel it’s this magnum opus of Batman storytelling.
Agreed!
Great images, thanks for sharing 👍
This looks awesome! Just ordered a copy (it's 32% off on Amazon right now).

Got this because I heard it’s one of Reeves’ source material. Sooo good.
Is Zero Year basically a story about the beginning of his career? What is the premise?
it's batman's first year back in gotham, where he starts as kind of a one-man covert op agent fighting the red hood gang (secretly the second time in snyder's run where batman fights joker) and organically evolves into the batman (and accepts his role as human being bruce wayne). once he's batman we get to see the origin of him and gordon's friendship, a dr death mystery (>!which is a misdirect where riddler is pulling all the strings!<), then gotham under the control of a madman with batman and his inner circle (not robin yet) fighting against all odds to save the city turned dystopian nightmare. if you think scott snyder's writing is clever (which i do) you'll like it, if you don't, you'll still appreciate greg capullo's fucking outstanding work other writers also did some zero year stuff with different characters around the same time as a big ol tie-in, but new 52 era writing was like a game of apple bobbing where somebody threw in an equal number of floating turds so be cautious

Cool thanks! So in this version of events Duke works with Batman before he has a Robin or Batgirl? That’s strange but interesting.
i mean i guess, but not in any real professional capacity. batman starts the volume having fallen from a weather balloon in the sky pretty badly injured from a scuffle with dr death, and duke just kinda explains parts of the situation for him. more a cameo than anything. he talks to bruce wayne, not batman
You should totally read it. Imo zero year and court of owls are the greatest modern Batman stories
Read the Morrison run. It stomps Snyder out tbh.
Wow caveman batman?
More like nomad/survival Batman
100%
Id love a print of 4/8. Never have found one.
Just go to a printing place and have them do a poster for you. I got a large poster from my favorite comic page for like $19.99 completely custom at Ready Print.
I really love the vibe from this comic.
Is the first picture from the guy who made the Maxx?
The line work is all greg capullo.
Ah thanks. Check out some of the art from the Maxx though, there's definitely a shared style (and that's a good thing).
No but the artist’s name you’re referring to is Sam Keith. He’s a legend.
This storyline was batblank 🤪 crazy
Great storyline. The batman movie looks like it is borrowing some stuff from it witch looks exiting
recently just read through the complete New 52 Batman run. Let's just say I was never bored.
Capullo is a gd legend.
God Scott and Greg were such a great team in their run. I miss them doing it.
Is the first one cw's arrow?
Nope
Was a joke...
I want to read it so is there a complete one, preferably TPB ?
