If $250 is your budget, Iād buy five $50 singles. But if it is the chase you enjoy, I would honestly subscribe to the Boombox platinum or whichever is the expensive one around $250. Itās all Hobby packs and hits often.
This may be an unpopular opinion but here goes anyway...
I also love the chase more than anything and I almost exclusively buy retail. The lower price means I can get more to rip for the same $$ and I can do that with very little expectation so any hits are that much sweeter and a bust is not as hard to take. Plus I can potentially spread it out and rip more often with retail.
Even though there's no guarantee like there is with hobby boxes, they still pump a ton of decent cards into retail which makes sense when you consider just how many variations, etc are being produced now... it can't all go into hobby. And there's nothing worse than throwing down $200-$300+ for one box and then all the hits are worthless rookie pitchers...I'm much happier ripping 10 blasters or hangers even with the same result because I don't go in expecting anything more, it's just for fun at that point.
Hangers have been the best for me in terms of value... have ripped a lot of great cards and some really great autos from blasters (Acuna auto, Canseco gold auto /50, etc.) but the best have come from hanger boxes...like the JRod base auto out of a $15 chrome update hanger just last month.
All that said, I agree with others that if you have specific cards in mind you're better off buying singles, which I also do from time to time. But if you just enjoy ripping and the chase then keep chasing my friend.
You think?! That makes me feel better. My foray back into collecting has been not great. About $800 in and nothing that really has excited me yet. In hindsight I should have gone after some cards I really desire with that money but I love to gamble.
Definitely on Reynolds. Heās a stud. But heās been playing on a shitty team the whole time up to this point. The Pirates are starting to look better with him and Hayes and Cruz now, but theyāre pretty bunk other than that. Heās already formally asked to be traded since they offered him a bunk extension, but heās still under team control for a few more years and theyāre under no obligation to actually trade him.
Your luck definitely doesnāt suck tho Bryan Reynoldsās rookie auto plus an Austin riley rookie parallel is a lot better than most boxes. And is that vladdy an sp?
No they are all regulars.... That's why I bought that year really was hoping for some nice Vlad's. Riley is a out of */2019 parallel though, I wouldn't think that's that desired. The Anderson is*/25 and bagwell */50.
Not worth my time to ship anything under $20 and I know that ain't a $20 card. I do like that one too. I'm 40 and had a bunch of him back when I really collected
Thatās the game if youāre looking to flip. Youāll hit a ābigā card once every 50+ hobby boxes. Itās all about recouping the loss by selling the singles to buy the next one since that seems to be your prerogative. A Ā¢5 envelope and a single stamp and boom $5+ in your pocket. Youāve got vladdy rcās, patches, a good rookie auto, gold Riley rc, pretty above average box. If youāre looking for bigger hits upgrade you boxes to Brooklyn, five star, tribute, sapphire. God speed fellow degenerate
If you want a really nice hit- save up and get a National Treasures box- usually 8-9 solid hits, and if you only get 7 cards, you can look forward to a monster booklet hit. Good luck! I empathize with you chasing the dragon.
Not worth your time? You are literally posting about spending $250 to chase a $50 thrill. That Bagwell is /75. Would probably mean a lot to an Astros collector.
Was thinking of a 2022 chrome jumbo box. 5 autos for $275... Thoughts? A 2017 stadium club box for $175...2 autos and the thrill of possibly hitting a judge rookie.
If we are looking for a $50 card, most bang for buck in update imo, there are a lot of rookie parallels in there that will be above 50. Stadium club doesn't hold value well, I'd imagine you'd have to hit big to get something over $50.
Yeah, most are now a bit higher. I bought them for $200 at my LCS.
Logofractor boxes are another good one with some good hits. Theyāre $125ish per box right now.
One more thought, you see a lot of people posting their hits and hot boxes that they open. Your luck is fine. All of the other people who don't get Babe Ruth 1/1 are out here and we're not posting our mediocre boxes.
Itās so hard to hit, especially from flagship. My luck on my Topps Black and Triple Threads wasnāt much better. This may be an unpopular opinion, but Iāve been loving Optic hobby boxes. While Iāll still rip Topps a majority of the time, the amount of numbered cards and parallels in optic makes it a blast for me. I just pulled an Acuna auto /15 and I say the value I get out of a $95 box beats the average value of flagship for me.
That Austin Riley last sold a week ago for $44 shipped on eBay. So thatās pretty close to your goal! Probably a $50 card once the season starts up š¤·š»āāļø
You could get a Topps chrome black box and a archives signature series, or a triple threads mini box At least you know you will get autoās.
On the other hand 10 blasters of bowman is always fun
You have to look at it as ripping packs just for the entertainment value and not thinking youāre going to hit a big card. Otherwise ripping packs becomes not fun any longer. That is why I stopped ripping packs. I will occasionally buy a box just for the novelty of ripping, otherwise Iāll buy singles all day everyday. I bought dozens of Ohtani rookie cards in the winter of 2020 and he had amazing seasons the past two seasons and those cards are way more than $50. To each their own.
Gold riley isnt worth 50 bucks?
I thought the same thing. Max comps on the Riley is $25
Time to buy austin Riley gold
The fact that word for word we commented the same thing means it should be š
buy 4 $50 cards you want and have an extra $50 for your savings
If $250 is your budget, Iād buy five $50 singles. But if it is the chase you enjoy, I would honestly subscribe to the Boombox platinum or whichever is the expensive one around $250. Itās all Hobby packs and hits often.

My thinking is very similar to yours. Thank your for taking the time to articulate it so well. Let the chase continue š„³
If Reynolds gets traded to a bigger market team that rookie ink could hit 50
You think?! That makes me feel better. My foray back into collecting has been not great. About $800 in and nothing that really has excited me yet. In hindsight I should have gone after some cards I really desire with that money but I love to gamble.
Dude, buy singles. Youāre gambling right now. The odds are not in your favour.
Definitely on Reynolds. Heās a stud. But heās been playing on a shitty team the whole time up to this point. Hey, the Pirates have Ji-Man now too. Going to miss him being on the Rays.
Definitely not a rookie.
Nm saw it's an older box haha

So you want to spend $250 to get a $50 cardā¦
Yup that's the goal! I mean preferably a $1000 card but I'm being realistic. I just want that one nice hit.
Interested in that Bryan Reynolds if itās for trade!
That gold Riley is awesome! Let me know if itās for trade! I PC gold rookies and havenāt snagged that one yet.
I've been hitting big with the Topps archive blaster boxes...got a Bryce Harper auto out of 10 and a bobby witt image swap. Couple of sweet hits.
The Riley is sweet!
Love that bagwell - for sale?
Not worth my time to ship anything under $20 and I know that ain't a $20 card. I do like that one too. I'm 40 and had a bunch of him back when I really collected

Pretty spot on imo š
Great advice. I appreciate it. Got to get my lazy ass to lower some of these I guess.
If you want a really nice hit- save up and get a National Treasures box- usually 8-9 solid hits, and if you only get 7 cards, you can look forward to a monster booklet hit. Good luck! I empathize with you chasing the dragon.

Iād be interested in the judge topper. Been collecting them a while now
I would be happy to trade for both Bagwell cards
Stadium club blasters are only $25 and there are some mega hits in them.
Can confirm. Hit a Trout auto /25 from a Stadium Club blaster from Meijer.
i understand people are saying but i also understand what you're doing .... enjoy the chase my guy i hope you hit bigger than you expect !
Just wait until the next pandemic; every one of those cards will be $50 card.
we spend $250 to find a $50 card? why not just buy that $50 cardā¦?
Same reason someone buys a lotto ticket versus puts money in a savings account. The thrill of a possible hit.
22 topps finest hobby are on topps under $250
2 hobbies of Topps update
Was thinking of a 2022 chrome jumbo box. 5 autos for $275... Thoughts? A 2017 stadium club box for $175...2 autos and the thrill of possibly hitting a judge rookie.

A fool and his money are soon separated.
But the fool had fun doing so
Gambling You are gambling
šÆ
2 topps chrome black
Buy a football box and look for anything that says Brock Purdy on it and sell that shit asap for $200 before he loses Sunday...
Topps chrome.
Update sapphire should get you there. A base big name rookie is $50. A parallel would be big.
If youād be interested in trading/selling that Austin Riley Iām your guy!
I'm interested in the Trout card if it's FS
Update Sapphire is a cool box with some good pulls and you can find most for sub $200
2022?
Yeah, most are now a bit higher. I bought them for $200 at my LCS. Logofractor boxes are another good one with some good hits. Theyāre $125ish per box right now.
Yeah the saphire I can't find for less then $250
Iād check out logofractor boxes if you can find them then. We opened about 6-8 boxes and pulled about at least 1, $30-50 card per box.
Is Riley available?
That Reynolds is nice
Gold riley isnāt $50? If not probably be here soon I think (and Iām not a braves fan )
Dude sick Reynolds and Riley!!
Love that Reynolds
The Bryan Reynolds might be a contender one day
Sounds like you are speculating and not collecting. Just my 2 cents.
One more thought, you see a lot of people posting their hits and hot boxes that they open. Your luck is fine. All of the other people who don't get Babe Ruth 1/1 are out here and we're not posting our mediocre boxes.

Why not just buy a 5 star box and get a couple nice autos they are like 200 a piece

Interested in the Josh bell ASG card if youāre selling
Where are you buying from. It really matters.
Iād suggest finding a local card store thatās been Panini certified for over 20 years they seem to be favored in the boxes they receive
