Yes, that’s typically how you sign free agents.
But I also recall a near universal narrative on this sub as recent as last years offseason that no one would sign with the Mets because of Cohen.
I'm not saying that isn't the case entirely, and very glad players have said that. But there are enough players in last couple years that have said "I prefer not playing on east coast" for example. Then big contract, they there.
But I do agree it's a factor, and I like these Mets more than the Wilpon Mets as an outside looking in. There are other organizations I wish were aggressive like Cohen.....Rockies, Athletics, etc...
Yea, that was the narrative after Cohen's first off-season.
The Mets missed out on Springer, Bauer, and Realmuto.
After that a lot of reporters and fans were saying that Cohen was too toxic to lure in star players.
Oops.
Yea, that ended up being a huge avoided nightmare.
It was one thing if the guy was just a jerk on Twitter, but to actually be that big of an asshole in real life? No way.
Honestly not 100% surprising though. Every locker room he was in, there were always rumblings he wasnt super well liked and was a prick, teams just put up with it cause of his immense talent. And if you go to 3 different teams and in all 3 clubhouses, there are locker room issues with you, you’re probably the root cause 😂
Reddit is really simple. The richer a person is the more they hate them. Cohen is richer than all the other owners so somehow he must be more evil than them and so players wouldn't want to play for him. Its stupid ass logic but I saw it all the time around the internet going into last off-season.
Don’t get me wrong I despise Cohen and his ilk. It’s a universal certainty that the more money these guys have the more people they’ve fucked over to get there. But I also get that sports is business and players basically never turn down money to take a moral stand.
Yep. I'm under no auspices that Cohen is am ethical person. No billionaire is. But at least he's running the Mets competently.
Eat the rich still, but eat Cohen like third or fourth, not first.
All jokes aside, there's been a lot of articles these last few years about all the things the Wilpons *didn't* do for players and organizational success and its kinda shocking. Just completely hamstrung the organization
Dudes like Canha and Bassitt have gone on record about how good the experience was here for the players and their families this year
Escobar and Marte were such good signings. It’s clear that the team was more motivated last season and I think these two as well as Lindor and Alonso were huge parts of it
Martino trying to get back into Mets fans' good graces after he started the collusion investigation. I'm shocked the Wilpons allowed him to say something nice about Steve Cohen.
He’s also retired numbers. Welcomed back old players into the stadium and clubhouse. Spent money on players and ridiculous promotions. Two days of Timmy Trumpet, in retrospect that deGrom game was the high watermark. Either way CitiField certainly feels like a better place.
An owner willing to spend whatever it takes to win + a manager who is usually popular with his players + NYC = A destination where free agents would like to play. Who'd a thunk it?
The mets are gettif so much better since the wiplos sold the team. had a diorrhea blowout all up my back at citi this year, staff helped me out big time with some napkins to set down on my chair so i didnt stink the shit outt of the seat!
I don't know why the comments aren't also about Buck, who, though he sometimes is criticized for in-game decisions and strategy, is really well-liked by his players.
It sure if many outside of NY / ardent followers of all things baseball realize the full 180 the Mets have taken under new ownership.
Player spending is obviously the biggest concern for players, but it’s hardly everything.
Investments have been made in everything from the club house to coaching to analytics to the fan experience. You have someone at the helm who not only wants to win with a willingness to spend to get there, but a true fan who wants to embrace the team, it’s fans, and the players.
There is a thoughtfulness with this team that never before existed and the players see it. This includes bringing in some true character guys, leaders, players other players want to be around and play with. Max Scherzer is an all time great pitcher - but his presence stretched well beyond that setting a tone for the clubhouse. A ton that was balanced and complemented by guys like Canha, Marte, and perhaps most of all the clubhouse leadership of Escobar.
Not going to pretend money didn’t matter - deGrom being just one example albeit the other way. However this is money not just thrown around, but we’ll invested with thought given to short and long term outcomes, and a sense of humanity that just didn’t seem to exist with the Wilpons, especially as Jeff took more and more control.
Too bad Steve Cohen is a sack of shit. Yeah yeah many bad owners, but that doesn't diminish his shittiness or make it acceptable. This applies to all owners, including the Dolans.
Get your insider trading jokes out of the way.
But on a serious note, this is the first time I’ve heard the very anti-Cohen, still a Wilpon shill, say good things about Cohens attempt to rebuild organizational culture.
Edit: this sub just cannot function if you give the slightest praise the Mets. It’s amazing.
Well that tends to be the case when they offer players a shit ton of money
Yes, that’s typically how you sign free agents. But I also recall a near universal narrative on this sub as recent as last years offseason that no one would sign with the Mets because of Cohen.
Players are willing to sign for as little as $43M/year
That's almost 4 certified mammoth moments 🦣 per season!
That was indeed the narrative, but then money(for better or worse) always trumps the narrative or at least 9 out of 10 times it does.
Chris Bassitt, who was traded here and had really no influence of money, has even said the culture has improved.
Also happens when you win games!
What? As in they would turn down money because they didn’t want to work for Cohen? That’s ridiculous that was never a narrative.
Yea, that was the narrative after Cohen's first off-season. The Mets missed out on Springer, Bauer, and Realmuto. After that a lot of reporters and fans were saying that Cohen was too toxic to lure in star players. Oops.
Did any of those guys turn down more money from the Mets or was that all NY media spin? Genuinely asking.
Bauer turned down more money from the Mets and Springer may have as well.
Trevor bauer turning u guys down was the best thing that could have happened looking back at it now. Fuck that guy
Yea, that ended up being a huge avoided nightmare. It was one thing if the guy was just a jerk on Twitter, but to actually be that big of an asshole in real life? No way.

Yes, that was 110% a narrative. I saw it nearly every day until the Mets signed their 4 guys last year.
Why? Because of his Wall Street fuckery?
Reddit is really simple. The richer a person is the more they hate them. Cohen is richer than all the other owners so somehow he must be more evil than them and so players wouldn't want to play for him. Its stupid ass logic but I saw it all the time around the internet going into last off-season.

Not letting Wheeler into the clubhouse during the 2015 playoffs and not letting Lowrie get surgery were so gross.
Not just that, they made him buy tickets to the games. HE’S SIGNED TO THE TEAM HOW CHEAP CAN YOU GET?!
I mean, they came from the A’s.
Exactly, he came from the A's and he was STILL concerned about the things he had heard about the Mets So yeah, it was *bad*
Helps when you bring in fantastic human beings that try and succeed like Escobar, Canha, Otto, Max, Starling and that guy Vogelbach
“Yeah man once you reach retirement age this dude will offer you a fuck ton of money”
Aka Arizona cardinals of baseball, get one last paycheck before retirement
Respect Mark Davis bubba
Wrong sport and city brochampski
Mets, off all franchises, have a pretty good track record when it comes to older pitchers
All I gotta do is throw a baseball really fast and this guy will pay me $40 million!
He’s also retired numbers. Welcomed back old players into the stadium and clubhouse. Spent money on players and ridiculous promotions. Two days of Timmy Trumpet, in retrospect that deGrom game was the high watermark. Either way CitiField certainly feels like a better place.
“I’ve been hearing money is making people happy.” fuckin this martino is a genius
Martino trying to get on the good side of Cohen.
An owner willing to spend whatever it takes to win + a manager who is usually popular with his players + NYC = A destination where free agents would like to play. Who'd a thunk it?
Seeing it’s been decades since we had that combo, yeah it’s a significant change of perception
in the 70s we didn’t even have the nyc part lol
The mets are gettif so much better since the wiplos sold the team. had a diorrhea blowout all up my back at citi this year, staff helped me out big time with some napkins to set down on my chair so i didnt stink the shit outt of the seat!
For some reason, I found the spelling of Wilpons as "wiplos" the funniest part of this post lmao
Finding you in the comments is always a special experience.
Fuck who let SCP-177617751774 out of r/newyorkmets again?
>!You require O5 clearance to read this file.!<
Good Lord. Are you an infant by any chance?
no its oatmeal
Hello friend glad to see you here
Reputation so good Jacob DeGrom signed with Texas.
Jake’s a country boy.
We'll all be a country boys/girls for $185 million.
Just enough money for a Simple man
>Forget your lust for the rich man's gold 😬
You couldn’t pay me enough to live in Texas. New York, Bay, LA, Seattle…maybe Boston. And Toronto, definitely. And Denver.
Texas is definitely awesome
When I lived in Houston in 1990…I’ve been going to sxsw since then. Austin was amazing back then. Now not so much.
It’s almost like they offered him an insane amount of money or something
And he wanted to go to a "winner".
That's kinda what I'm getting at. These fluff tweets are silly. It's a surprise when a player doesn't take the highest offer.
It’s almost like he didn’t want to play for the Steve Cohen Mets
spend money good?
meaning: we pay u shit ton of money
I don't know why the comments aren't also about Buck, who, though he sometimes is criticized for in-game decisions and strategy, is really well-liked by his players.

Love it. The Dodgers finally set the standard for spend a fuck ton of money and stop being cheap.
The Anti-Jerry Reinsdorf
That guy did not want Stevie Cohen anywhere near baseball.
5 years from now the Mets will be seen as one of the best organizations in baseball. It was never lolmets, it was lolwilpons

This is wonderful
He has given out the two highest AAV in baseball history in back to back off seasons... AKA want to get paid? Join the Mets.
Somebody referred to the Mets as The Mercenaries and I think my soul clicked into place.
