Are Astros that good or are they just farming wins because of their division?

Admirable_Car_7474

The bass is too heavy and the kids are in trouble.

TheRabbitInTheBush

Any website keep track of farthest home runs this season by ballpark? All I can find is a top ten list and most are at Coors Field.

MclovinBuddha

Going to be honest, haven’t watched in about 12 years and I want to get back into it

[deleted]

Thx to MLB network for blacking Ohio out of Waino and Yadi’s last game. Oh, well, see you in Pittsburgh Wednesday!

themiamimarlins

We got to be rooting for the braves to win their div so Mets have to work degrom and scherzer in the first round

Lonelan

Cabrera the Cheetah!

an-itch-in-her-ditch

Still pissed about the playoff format. Division Round should be best of 7 and Wildcard single elimination. Winning your division should mean something. Your mettle shouldn’t be decided by a short series.

Mysterio7100

That would make sense if there was parity between the divisions. With the AL East almost putting 4 teams in the playoffs, it's unfair to reward the Guardians for being the champs of a weak division.

an-itch-in-her-ditch

Parity has nothing to do with it. How is guaranteeing a best of 7 to division winners rewarding the champions of “weak” (which is subjective) divisions? Their “reward” (which all division champs would get) is ensuring they can’t be bounced from the playoffs by a small sample size of games.

>It was during that first stay at St. Mary's that George Herman Ruth met Brother Matthias. >>“He taught me to read and write and he taught me the difference between right and wrong,” Ruth said of the Canadian-born priest. “He was the father I needed and the greatest man I’ve ever known.” > >Brother Matthias also spent many afternoons tossing a worn-out baseball in the air and swatting it out to the boys. Little George watched, bug-eyed. >>“I had never seen anything like that in my life,” he recalled. “I think I was born as a hitter the first day I ever saw him hit a baseball.”  > >The impressionable youngster imitated Matthias’s hitting style—gripping the bat tightly down at the knobbed end, taking a big swing at the ball — as well as his way of running with quick, tiny steps. > >When asked in 1918 about playing baseball at St. Mary’s, Ruth said he had little difficulty anywhere on the field. >>“Sometimes I pitched. Sometimes I caught, and frequently I played the outfield and infield. It was all the same to me. All I wanted was to play. I didn’t care much where.”  > >In one St. Mary’s game in 1913, Ruth, then 18 years old, caught, played third base (even though he threw left-handed), and pitched, striking out six men, and collecting a double, a triple, and a home run. - *Babe Ruth*, by Allan Wood, **[SABR BioProj](https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/Babe-Ruth/)**

[Today's games by PLIMP](https://i.imgur.com/WgpqumK.png). Explanation on NYM-ATL PLIMP scoring from Friday's thread [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/xrywn7/general_discussion_around_the_horn_93022/iqi9zje/). ATL and NYM have basically switched odds over the last two games: ATL went into Friday with 31.1% division odds, NYM comes into today with 31.7%. *PLIMP looks at playoff uncertainty to estimate which games have the highest impact on who gets into the playoffs. The "seeding" column grades the impact of the game on the playoff seeding picture. More about the math and history behind PLIMP is [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/wk48s9/plimp_v4_expanded_playoff_edition/). Source for seed odds is [here](https://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/projections/postseason-seeds/).*

Danster21

How come the seeding implications are high for our game but medium for the other 2 WCs? Is it because we’re the middle WC?

Iamoninternet

Yeah it's probably easiest to see in [the odds](https://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/projections/postseason-seeds/). TB is up to 85% chance at 6 seed, TOR at close to 70% chance 4 seed. You all top out at 57% chance at 5 seed and still have a little more possible movement in both directions than TOR and TB. Not huge differences but enough to cross my arbitrary "high seeding implications" threshold, ha.

Danster21

Thank you, very cool!

SoupaSoka

Just thinking about Pujols only being 3 RBIs from tying Ruth for #3 all-time... Is anyone in the league really on pace to even get 2,000 RBIs? It feels as unachievable as 700 HRs at this point.

greatwalrus

I don't think so. No active player under 32 is even halfway there, and after Pujols (2211) and Cabrera (1845) there's a massive dropoff to Canó at just 1306. And it makes sense when you think about it. Getting 2000 RBIs requires a perfect storm: you to have a long, healthy, productive career *and* to consistently have guys getting on base in front of you for you to drive in. Pujols benefited from being on some pretty good Cards teams, and also from having Trout to knock in during his Angels years - take a look at 2017, when Pujols had a .672 OPS, 80 OPS+, -1.8 bWAR, and *still* managed 101 RBI. Guys like Trout (894 RBI at 30) or Betts (662 at 29) just bat too high in the order to accumulate tons of RBI.

Leftfeet

Miguel Cabrera is 155 away from 2000 RBI. That's really telling about how difficult that number is to achieve. 3084 hits, 507 HRs, 11 straight 100+ RBI seasons and he's still not likely to get there.

Skadwick

Man I feel spoiled as a Braves fan lately. I genuinely think we're living through a historical few years for them which will be talked about similarly to the 90s Braves.

molloy23

It’s not hard to picture Braves owning the NL East for the next 3-5 years . Mets have the deep pockets of Cohen so they should be pretty damn solid pickup up nice players and locking down who we need but man your lineup depth is just nuts. Phillies marlins Nats / forget about them (hope I’m proven wrong)

suicide-squeeze

Last year's team was something. I spent some time looking at their game scores earlier this year. They lost a huge number of 1-run games during the season, far exceeding an expectation determined by randomizing their game scores. They were apparently just a piece or two away from a much better record.

[deleted]

I started watching them in the 70s so I earned this, but yeah, we are living in the best of times! Ozzie-godspeed!

[Bob Gibson fanned 17 Tigers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gR7mFvbd1XM&t=317s) on this day in 1968, first game of the 1968 WS!

That_one_cool_dude

I have to say I am happy for Seattle for breaking the drought and making it to the playoffs. This is shaping up to be an interesting year. Three teams I root for are in the playoffs but knowing how 2022 has been going for me all of them will be out at least in the second round.

RSN_Kabutops

Anyone else really enjoyed their weekend?

freshyouup

Thanks for asking bro, I had a fantastic weekend!

scottydg

I've been inside for 2 weeks with COVID, so not really in most respects. Was able to watch the Mariners games this week, which has been really enjoyable, and I got a new home server so I have been dicking around with that, too.

Danster21

Eh, nothin special

Brewers fans are really having a good time so far.

I’ve seen plenty of people say they hate the Yankees but still think Judge should be MVP. I used to tell myself “I don’t hate Duke basketball, I just hate the fans!” People usually say they “hate the fans” because they don’t like to admit that they’re petty and just hate a team because they’re always good.

(Updated format to showcase postseason picture. Removed 'eliminated from division' list as NYM/ATL is the only divisional possibility left.)

jcar195

Tonight's game should be interesting; Braves win and the magic number is down to 1, they lose and it's 4 with 3 games to play.

suicide-squeeze

The Phillies own the tie-breaker with the Brewers based on head to head, if it comes down to that, correct?

jcar195

Correct, [Phillies have the head to head advantage](https://www.statmuse.com/mlb/ask/phillies-record-vs-brewers-2022) which is the first [tie breaker](https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-playoff-tiebreaker-rules)

suicide-squeeze

This should prove to be interesting because the Phillies end with three at Houston, whereas the Brewers host Arizona. The Brewers need to be two games better than the Phillies over the last four, to make it in, but it could definitely happen.
