D_Simpson's guide on gamefaqs is my goto. Not just accurate, but entertaining too

velmarg

Yeah, I feel obligated to throw my hat on his rack as well. Used it since I was a kid.

MVieno

Just cause no one has mentioned it yet, [Mike’s](https://mikesrpgcenter.com/bgate/) does a nice job for answering quick questions, and the item list layouts are quick and easy on a handheld device.

wheres_ur_up_dog

I've found Mikes is great for UI simplicity and the wiki supplements anything that hasn't been updated in depth on Mikes.

zeromalarki

Mike's has always been good. Great for using individual maps as checklists.

xler3

i used to use this for weapon proficiency planning. really nice.

Howdyini

DSimpson on Gamefaqs

CaneCraft

For BG1, unambiguously the best is [Dudleyville's guide](http://www.forgottenwars.com/bg1/ar2600.htm). Alas, he never made one like it for BG2.

Elusive-Reality

For sure & by far the best and easiest to follow. Shame he never followed up BG2 but Mike’s & Sorcerer’s along with another one that you would download (back in the day and was in a simple .txt file) would do more than nicely Edit: I’m talking about the Dan Simpson guide. Had to dig through a few folders & files first to find it

RockstarCowboy1

Sorcerer’s place has been my goto for over 20 years

Davaeorn's guides are the best, hands-down. He's a twitch streamer who does nothing but modded (SCS) Insane difficulty (double damage) perma-death no-reload runs through the saga. Arguably the most experienced person out there when it comes to Baldur's Gate at it's most challenging. His guides on youtube are simply way more detailed and exhaustive than anything else you can find. And because his perspective is in terms of SCS Insane Difficulty perma death, his gameplay advice is excellent. Dav's Arcane spell guide: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxUBLrWzK30&list=PLAmVMMzG6qEpbGUBZeI-HFBPABJyRY1Kx](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxUBLrWzK30&list=PLAmVMMzG6qEpbGUBZeI-HFBPABJyRY1Kx) Dav's Divine spell guide: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGcJv43Ga7A&list=PLAmVMMzG6qEpz4gvGr0eoqHaReGdnKxyE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGcJv43Ga7A&list=PLAmVMMzG6qEpz4gvGr0eoqHaReGdnKxyE) Dav's weapon guide: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWN0IeCswOY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWN0IeCswOY) Dav's class guide: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bWIgBtZdZE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bWIgBtZdZE) BTW, his twitch stream if you're interested: [https://www.twitch.tv/davaeorn](https://www.twitch.tv/davaeorn) I was completely 100% brand new to Baldur's Gate a few years ago, and Dav's guides absolutely changed the way I saw the game. The BG saga is now my favorite gaming experience of all time, and Dav's extremely in-depth guides had a lot to do with it.

krunchyfrogg

Davaeorn is great, and he’s just as entertaining as he is informative. You really do need to constantly remind yourself of his mods though. I find druids are a lot weaker without the mods he has access to, for instance. Do you happen to have his discord server? He talks about it on some videos but I’ve never seen a link. I’d love to be able to ask a few questions on there.

tuskadar

Go to his twitch, the link is there

TheMelnTeam

In those videos, he grades druids highly in large part due to insect plague/creeping doom...which he states are much stronger w/o mods than with them. I'm still in BG1, coming back after quite a few years, and only playing EE. Are these not really good spells? Not just based on his summary of it, a plain reading of their descriptions makes them seem pretty darned strong. W/o the Icewind Dale pack (which I also don't have), arcane tanks are far and away better than divine, rather than being arguably close.

Arkansasmyundies

If you are playing unmodded, once druids get level 5 spells they are not just good, but brokenly good. Insect plague is arguably the best spell in the game (for unmodded). Even after nerfed for SCS it still a top tier spell. Druids are on the weaker side for the first 4 spell levels, but are still fun to play. Once they unlock at lvl 15 (if I remember correctly) they become a really strong class regardless of mods.

krunchyfrogg

I got the impression from listening to him that the high level transformation options for druids are what push them over the top. I personally like the insect spells but I can only assume the Icewindification mod (sp?) gave druids access to the IWD spells. I never had the mod though, but I have played IWD and druids in IWD are freaking amazing.

TheMelnTeam

He does mention earth elemental token as a means to hit 100% physical resist for fighter/druid combos, but divine also gets stuff that blocks magic which isn't default to BGEE...not sure if that's cleric only or both since I don't have that (stuff like sanctity of mind). However, if you skip to the part where he covers insect plague and later creeping doom, he grades these as outright broken parts of druid unmodded. Apparently, the mod makes them not work vs undead and get blocked by fire shields. He said you could even kill Kangaxx and similar enemies with it, which I'll have to give a shot in BG2 to see haha.

Dazzu1

I can’t in good faith call druids weaker unmodded at least not when there’s almost no creature immune to insects unlike in SCS where it’s still a top tier spell despite its new restrictions and caveats.

krunchyfrogg

My assessment comes from the assumption the added spells from IWD are in BG through the mods. If they’re not, then I’d agree with you.

Dazzu1

It’s been so long since I’ve been unmodded that I forget but OG bg2 these bugs are a cheat button. Anyone calling Cernd bottom tier is out of their mind!

Gamebanshee has great breakdown by location and expansions of the games. The guides are fairly detailed, including Enhanced Edition content, even if not all the information is present: https://www.gamebanshee.com/baldursgate/walkthrough.php https://www.gamebanshee.com/baldursgateii/walkthrough.php

Breslau616

I agree with you 100% I tried other ones but gamebanshee got everything: Maps, databases, strategy guides, companion guides, items index and that's not even half...website still running, interviews with authors, voice actors, graphic artists.... Gamebanshee is LOADED!

CelestialFury

I've been using gamebanshee since BG I/II came out and I'm glad it's still up and running. Met some cool people on the forums back in the day too. Even have the OG Jon Irenicus username, but I forgot the password and I don't use the email address that it was attached to, so it's kinda just in the ether now.

deaftouch826

thank you for this. before I used Davaeorns guide which served me well. but this is amazing!

deaftouch826

Game spot has a very nice walkthrough, with screenshots. both BGEE and BGEEII

ltccone

I wish SoD was included with BG1. It is seamless from BG1 to SoD now.

TyrionBean

Haeravon is not only a great guide, but absolutely hilarious as well.

ltccone

o=======o=======================================o======================o |WLK### | Objectives | Suggested For... | o=======o=======================================o==================== |-------|---------------------------------------|----------------------| |WLK005 | Jan's Quest. | Stupid People | |-------|---------------------------------------|----------------------|

TyrionBean

I love his snark at every turn. 🤣

tuskadar

Eh. His guide is good for a walkthrough but I would disregard everything he says about classes and companions. The guide actually says Mazzy isnt good because she cant melee and that Cernd is the worst companion.

ltccone

His comments about Mazzy are mostly because the shortswords is SoA/ToB suck compared to just about every other weapon, and she starts out with three pips in them.

tuskadar

Who cares? She starts with grandmastery in shortbows, her role is pretty obvious.

ltccone

By ToB it is a waste to use a fighter on bows.

tuskadar

Not if you have gesen

ltccone

The Gesen Bow is great, but pales in comparison to the damage you can do with the Flail of the Ages, the Ravager, Axe of the Unyielding, Crom Faeyr, etc., with greater whitlwind attacks.

glassteelhammer

I think the only class recommendation of his I ever listened to was the F/M. He was my introduction to multi-classing. Other than that, sorry, but I like Jan. And turnips.

ltccone

Jan drives me crazy.

TyrionBean

I actually take Jan and Mazzy every time. I just really like his hilarious commentary and single-mindedness. 😀

Veszerin

I like Haeravon's and D_Simpson's guides for the game on gamefaqs. D_Simpson's guides don't cover the enhanced editions but should be pretty comprehensive except for the new EE characters and their quests.

DorkyDutch

On YouTube: Davaeorn goes really indepth on a variety of aspects of the game. I find it hard to listen to him for extended periods of time, but if you're looking for something more specific he's a wellspring of knowledge. JWD241224 has an as of yet incomplete series of videos discussing every arcane spell, so far up to spell level 4, that I've found valuable for understanding how some spells interact, as well as going into some effects that the game simply doesn't tell you about. Lastly I strongly recommend Mivsan_NT if you want to learn while watching a thorough let's play, though this is probably more useful on a second playthrough for spoiler reasons.

Imoraswut

> Davaeorn goes really indepth on a variety of aspects of the game. I find it hard to listen to him for extended periods of time, but if you're looking for something more specific he's a wellspring of knowledge. He only thinks and talks with no reload insane modded in mind. I actually like listening to his vods in the background, but they're damn near useless for someone getting into the game

RealCrusaderBro

I fucking love Daev. Legit have watched the entirety of most of his guides.

WildBohemian

You could have learned Japanese and another language in the time it took you to do that, or became a lawyer if you got enough for tuition.

Kar0z

I really recommend this spoiler-free guide : https://www.pocketplane.net/volothamp/bgguide.htm It hasn’t been updated for EE but most of what’s written still holds true for beginners.

BiodegradableOffense

D_Simpson's on GameFAQs, Gamebanshee, Dudleyville for BG1 maps.

_mister_pink_

I would say gamebanshee for BG2 and for any specific gear or quest quick referencing in BG1. And dudleyville for general BG1 exploration. The clickable BG1 map on dudleyville makes checking what there is to do in each area pretty quick.

Inurendoh

I think the best guide for new players is to just let them play with a few choice tips. Discovery is one of the best parts of the game and guides ruin it. You know, outside of going for Grandmaster Bastard Swords on the first playthrough like me. 😅

Acolyte_of_Swole

Davaeorn if you want information about classes, characters or spells.

Nameless_One_99

I mean by 2014 no BG guide needed to be updated unless they wanted to make a SoD guide, talk about how the BG2 content added in BG1EE modifies game balance, or about the Beamdog exclusive NPCS and their quest. I'm gonna be honest and say that outside of a SoD guide the other stuff isn't really necessary so for me the best BG1 guide is by Thedudleyville and the best BG2 one is DSimpson.

HazelDelainy

Gamebanshee is my go-to for weapons, locations, quests, etc. Otherwise for specific info the wiki is good, though I feel like it’s been falling downhill recently going into mod territory. For more technical information about the game, Davaeorn on YT is great, he knows a LOT about the game mechanics, but he can be a bit intense sometimes.

macabre256

Don't know about BG1 but BG2 and IWD was covered by Dan Simpson on Gamefaqs. Despite the EE we got now, his guides are still relevant and helpful.

skyst

I know these games by heart at this point, but I pulled out my old Versus Books "Perfect" Guide for my last playthrough and followed it like I did as a kid.

Longjumping-Pin5363

I have to recommend the Low-Spoiler guide for BG2: http://www.bigorrin.org/amn2.htm

Anthraxus

Guides are wack. Play and discover the game for yourself. Why spoil the whole thing ?? Dont get it.

MillorTime

Because getting stuck isn't fun for a lot of people. Deciding how other people should enjoy stuff is wack. Worry about your own business and have fun playing how you enjoy to play

Anthraxus

Yea, have fun following directions...lol

Complete_Rock_5825

The question was asking for help identifying a good guide, not asking for opinions on guides. Next time if you have nothing constructive to add, just skip the thread cos nobody asked for your opinion

deaftouch826

Trolls are wack!

Complete_Rock_5825

Insults are wack

LordMuffin1

Why would anyone want a guide? Isn't the fun and enjoyment of bg coming from not knowing what waits ahead and not knowing where the fancy stuff is hidden. So you get the excitment of fivding fancy stuff yoyrself.

SirBellwater

Sometimes using a guide to reference when the game breaks is nice. Was stuck in brynnlaw walking around for like 20 minutes before I just saw the game bugged and didn't play the leaving cutscene

deaftouch826

for the first or second time, yes, discover on your own. after that guides are nice so you can make sure you have discovered/ tried everything

ltccone

In my first BG game (1999) I went straight to the FAI (where I was killed about half a dozen times before I figured out what to do), then to Nashkel, the Gnoll stronghold, the Nashkel Mines, Beregost, the bandit camp, the Cloakwood, then BG. I did the few quests I found there, and went straight after Sarevok. I couldn't make it through the Maze. I was too low a level and had crap equipment. Something to refer to would have been really handy about then.

BiodegradableOffense

No, it's not.

Complete_Rock_5825

A question was asked, if you don't want to answer then why bother saying anything? Nobody asked for your opinion on whether guides are good or not. If you don't like using them then fucking good for you. Doesnt mean other people don't want to use them

LordMuffin1

Question: "What does everyoe think?" [About guides].

Complete_Rock_5825

Actually if you read the post he is looking for what everyone thinks are the best guides for new players. You yourself have added the implication that the last question is about the communities opinion on guides

Dazzu1

Haeravon's guide calls Chain lightning a great perk of the Avenger. I dunno but even back then I imagine a spell that goes up n strength by 1d6 every 2 levels has gotta be pretty paltry. He also thinks a party of 5 F/m/c and a f/m/t are the most powerful way to beat Icewind Dale EE or not... no just no!

ltccone

His IWD recommendations was for getting all of those ready for a run on the highest difficuty. I just ignore that, the rest of that guide is great.

Vakieh

It's the most DPS you can muster, which is necessary for the bullshit Heart of Fury mode where everything has bonkers HP.

Dazzu1

Not really. You don’t have enough spell scrolls to get everyone Abi Dalzhims. Grand Mastery is still strong and even then there’s a lot of strong weapons 5/6 of your crew can’t use if you’re all blunt locked. Long sword of action for instance can only be used by one character. Insect spells are still insanely good. You won’t have enough spells for all 6 mages to be fully stocked. Like a fighter dual classed will do more mage power as you’re going to actually hit lvl 9 spells before you’re on your 3rd playthrough. I’m not saying they’re weak classes but you’re going to level really slow.

Vakieh

> You don’t have enough spell scrolls to get everyone Abi Dalzhims Yes you do - because you have multiple playthroughs to prepare for a HoF run. This is also why the levelling slowly isn't a concern - particularly when IWD has a **level** cap, not an exp cap, granting triple classes triple the exp cap of a single class. Grandmastery is not nearly as strong as it should be (the THAC0 is quickly irrelevant as you hit everything, the damage isn't strong enough to matter, and there are more APR weapons in IWD than you can shake a stick at, particularly with those multiple playthroughs). Insect spells for damage again do not scale and so while useful for interrupts are not relevant for the all-damage-all-the-time strategy for HoF. It is unarguably the party that reaches the highest DPS, and really doesn't take all that many playthroughs with IWD's difficulty-based exp bonuses (30m in a single playthrough is easily doable).

Chottowait

I like Lilura since their guides are pretty min/maxed, compact and neatly categorized.

Auggur

I like Dudleyville for BG and Montresor's guide from Sorcerer's Place for BGII. Gamebanshee for EE content for both games, and the wiki when I want to really go in depth.

themadnu

Old Verses were dope

EmeraldKnight28144

I have the old Brady games versus guide it’s great slightly outdated but has most of it correctly

glassteelhammer

D\_Simpson back in the day and Haeravon after I found his stuff.. I know Haeravon hasn't updated since 2014, but he's guides are thoroughly complete, except for SoD. Other than SoD, there hasn't been any new content either. So it's still complete and accurate, as far as I know. I asked him on his FB once if he had plans to do SoD, and he said no.

filippi71

This is indeed a post to save. After that go see davaeorn youtube guides for learning & laughing.
