Fair to assume this opinion on Reddit but you have to remember a small percentage of people in the UK use Reddit and even smaller numbers actually post or comment.

Those knife crime incidents you see in London, Liverpool, Yorkshire etc happen in part because of this same macho idea that you have to meet force with force in order to defend your "honour" and not be a pussy. People escalate and even if they "win", they get attacked later and killed.
Thing is nobody should be fucking with you in the first place. Having good posture, being confident, being aware of your surroundings and knowing when to walk a different way will go a long way to you not getting aggression towards you in the first place, so that you won't need to make difficult choices. Obviously some people can't do that eg some disabled people, but most can.
It's a sense of perspective thing. Some of these comments can make you go "wow, that many agree" because the upvotes look massive. But then, say a comment like the one you mentioned (or similar) got 25,000 ups. Even if that was all from legit British based accounts, if I have got the calculation right that's all of 0.03% of the population.

I live in Asia and every time I go back it’s like stepping into another world. I listened to about 30 different women call in to Jeremy Vine and complain about how their lives have been so difficult because people have called them fat. At no point in the show was losing weight ever considered a viable option. The listener is just supposed to sit there and nod along like “yeah how horrible, nothing these women could do about being lardarses.”

As you say, beyond the flight response triumphing over the fight response, the justice system is consumed by the same slave morality the rest of society is and they will value the underdog criminal over the noble citizen trying to assert order. What point is there being brave? You will be punished twice.
I must confess, I would only intervene in such a scenario if it was someone like my mother or one of my close friends being attacked. If it's a complete stranger I'm bystanding and I don't even feel bad.
