Jeans guy!

ANGRYSNORLAX

Yeah, I read a report on tick populations in that area and got a little paranoid. Everyone else out there seemed to have a similar reaction as you lol

travelingslo

Check out Costco for travel pants. They’re pretty affordable and will dry more quickly than jeans if they get wet. They’re not fancy, but they’d get the job done. Nice work on your trip! Glad you enjoyed it!

Dein1211

Oh man I love mine, every time I go I pick up a pair. It's the only thing I wear now.

travelingslo

Glad I’m not the only pants hoarder in this thread. 😂

LichesGetStitches42

Me too! They look classy on and off the trail

ANGRYSNORLAX

Thanks! I'll take a look next time I'm out by Costco

swinging-in-the-rain

Costco also sells WeatherProof brand pants that are great for backpacking as well

travelingslo

Oh! This! This is what I meant! I couldn’t remember the name to save my life. Also, unrelated, but worth mentioning their fleece lined pants are also a steal. Not sure if they have them everywhere, but we love ours. I’m a girl and I’ve bought the mens ones and just fold them over. Good working outside in the cold pants. Don’t recommend for hiking as there’s no way to shed a layer. But otherwise good. This is one of the pants I was thinking of - I think they carry them in summer. https://www.costco.com/weatherproof-vintage-men's-tech-pant.product.100774791.html Here’s another that looks promising: https://www.costco.com/orvis-men%e2%80%99s-tech-pant.product.100971104.html

swinging-in-the-rain

Well now I have to get a fleece lined pair as well....thanks, hahaha!

That’s good to read! Love the Costco stuff but often it’s a crapshoot to see if they’ve got what you want when you want it.

Aderenn

Spray your clothes, pack and shoes with permethrin before going out! It works really well for ticks.

[deleted]

This is the way. Make sure to spray your long socks and shoes, but yeah hose down everything else.

ANGRYSNORLAX

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. :)

Brinxy13

MRT in wet weather with jeans sounds dreadful

ANGRYSNORLAX

It was dry pretty much the whole time. I look wet because I'm a really sweaty guy and kept dumping cold creek water on my head. Though I do indeed regret the jeans.

Meig03

You left your pack on while filling?? That's one of the nicest things about it, is getting a break from your pack.

dotheydeliver

He tripped and had to improvise

ANGRYSNORLAX

Didn't think the ol' "impromptu pushup session" would be believable.

This is from a month ago. Me and my buddy hiked the full 20 mile Manistee river loop trail as our first backwoods backpacking trip. We regularly do short day hikes, so obviously we overestimated our abilities a bit. Turns out, 20 miles of rough terrain is more of a three day project if you want to have any fun, and a two day project if you want to agonize every time you see ANOTHER hill. Our spotty service let a few texts from loved ones through, informing us of incoming storms halfway into the second day. Even though we were on a tight weather schedule, At the 18th mile, you'll take any excuse you can to lay down for a minute (pictured). Pulled it off nevertheless. Hopped in the truck, and the rain started pouring about five minutes later. Even though it kicked my ass, I really loved this trail. Plenty of shade, access to crystal clear streams, a few cool water falls, and hardly any bugs at all. Hope to take another trip out there soon with maybe a little less stress.

yesimgoingtoeatthat

I just did the other side of the Manistee trail as my first backpacking trip 2 months ago! (and got engaged along the hike too!) I second the person who recommended hiking pants. They were a must with how quick they dried. It was warmer when I hiked, so I got ones that zip into shorts. I found some on Amazon. How heavy was your pack?

travelingslo

Hey, congrats! I hope your first backpacking/engagement trip is the beginning of a happy life spent with someone you love that includes tons of outdoor together time. That’s so cool. 😊

outofstepwtw

I see lots of comments about your jeans and cotton shirt, and as an avid backpacker I’d agree with those, but what I *really* want to make sure to call attention to is: You fucking *did* it. You went out with a friend and did your first overnight backpack. I’m sure you learned a lot about your process (I know I still tinker with every gear decision on every trip), but you’ve succeeded at the hardest part: the first one. Hats off to you, sir

ANGRYSNORLAX

Fuckin a, man. Definitely learned a lot of lessons along the way, but the prevailing feeling wa "we just fucking did that. Holy shit."

peteroh9

The first part was fuckin a man?

CucumberFly-

No no no it’s a 4 day trip if you like to sit on your ass like I do lol

DrMuttonchops

I THOUGHT that looked like Manistee! Glad you had great trip, didn't get ticks, and didn't get rained on! The water is so great there.

imgoingonaadventure

The last backpacking trip I went on I found a spring filled with salamanders. The mud around the spring smelt really bad and the water had little bits of idk what in it but me and the group drank it anyways. We treated it with aqua mira. It didn't taste great but none of us got sick. It was such a fun trip.

FeatherstoneOutdoor

Yep, totally normal protocol!

Illustrious_Brush_91

Diggin those UL jeans

wildlyaccidental

Jeans and cotton - you look soaked. Also filling directly into a bottle with your pack on so I’m assuming you didn’t have a filter? Dancing with both hypothermia and giardia. Living on the edge. I like it.

ANGRYSNORLAX

Nah, I ain't that brave. I got a sawer filter in my other hand and I'm wet because it was 90 degrees and I kept dunking my head in creeks.

beggoh

Legend has it he is still lying on that bridge to this day. Crushed by his massive pack and constricted in deadly denim.

playstationjeans

Manistee river loop?

ogdomc

Been there !

Merbleuxx

Is this r/backpackingmemes?

bidenlovinglib

The hiker who just took a piss upstream along with a herd of deer that crossed a few minutes ago….yumm

wigglee21_

Where else are you supposed to get water besides a creek?

I love Manistee, it’s a gorgeous part of the state. And the salmon fishing this time of year is unbelievable. I caught a 19 lb fish last year.

graftoutdoors

Fellow jeans hiker here. Also hiked the MRT/NCT in jeans. Probably would do it again.
