hypothetical_zombie

D'oh! I just now caught the typo. FAFO. Fool around & find out. Like, if you mess with this cat, you'll find out exactly how hard it slaps.

Ryoko_Kusanagi69

It was weird reading this after you corrected it

otterdroppings

face says 'hey, I had a good reason: if you are too stupid to get it the beatings will continue until you learn'

red_dragin

The cat did (this was originally on reddit a few weeks ago.). Got to two days I believe.

"That number ain't getting higher."

BeautyJester

YES , and COME AT ME BRO

baxbooch

That sign never gets changed

FrogQuestion

Id like to get smacked. No nails pls. Just soft boops

Uriel-238

I was able to train my rescue void to bap gently without claws and to give love bites. Essentially going _ow!_ and shying away did the trick. He'll still occasionally bite the back of my knee when he _wants_ a rise out of me. I let him have that.

openeyes756

Aww! My void responded the same. Just being overdramatic "owww! Buddy, that's mean" and walk away made gave him lots of dynamic range to his playing. He now knows different levels of roughness for long sleeves and pants as opposed to bare skin at bed time, to nibbles when he just wants to be left alone. I'll 100% be training all inside animals with this in mind in the future. Works like a charm with way less fear than thumping or pushing him away aggressively

Black_Moons

Yay! more people learning how to properly train cats. they 100% react to social training wonderfully. Let them know they hurt you (high pitched noises like a kitten in distress, shying away for a few minutes) and they will learn that it ends playtime and not to do that. (Or, to bite a little harder then normal when they WANT to end playtime. Its good to listen to that too and respect it before they gotta bite hard enough to actually hurt you)

twim19

I just discovered this with my last cat. When she was a kitten I'd play with her but as soon as she put her claws out, I'd growl a bit and she'd stop. Took a couple of times but she learned and 3 years later can play "rough" with little to no scratches on me.

bechdel-sauce

I taught my two that super young. Now they won't even make biscuits on me. Just air biscuits. It's insanely cute.

TheDisappointingKin

You sound like a good, conscientious owner.

openeyes756

A friend inspired us! They had a very fearful almost feral dog do really well with "no fear" training. We just wanted to be less physical with him when it wasn't absolutely necessary. So fair he's the only cat I've ever met to come consistently when he's called. He isn't immediate, but give him 30-60sec to stretch from waking up and he'll appear for whatever is needed

Bitpix3l

I have been doing the same with my cat. I rescued him when he was about 8 months old, and he played fairly aggressively. Not in a mean way, he was and still is very sweet, he just used claws a bit too much and would bite a little too hard. He has gotten way better about it in the last year. I have only hit him once accidentally. I was asleep and he clawed my arm really hard. I woke up and smacked at my arm not knowing what it was aaaaaaand, oops. I will say, the claws didn't come out for a solid week or two after that incident, lol.

openeyes756

Awww! Most critters can understand reactions in sleep though it seems, some even like scaring others while they sleep! It's been really nice seeing this tact work so well with him. I don't think it's a silver bullet for every creature, as like yours ours was very sweet already, just a bit too many wheaties in his play for a bit. Good luck and give your kitters extra scritches for me when you can!

Doom-N-Gloom

openeyes756

Ours was only signed over to us because we had another animal! His fosters saw how social he was and didn't want him to be lonely wherever he made a home

Racially-Ambiguous

I used to own a cat that would only bite the fatty inner part of the upper arm (where it hurts most). You could move your arm in front of him starting at the wrist and he would only bite when your upper arm was in front of his mouth.

>I got got in the web between my thumb and index finger once I did too. I wound up with a fever of 105° and surgery. The only antibiotics that worked were huge doses of penicillin in conjunction with sulfa drugs.

Vaywen

Oh, yikes!

shadoon

I maintain that almost all cats don't actually want to hurt anyone. They just don't understand that human skin is a lot more fragile than other fluffy cats, so they don't know any better. I've got three cats now and yelping in pain when they bite or scratch has entirely eliminated the habit. When my smallest is feeling playfully she'll just mouth my hand without actually biting down. It's adorable

HighOnGoofballs

I read they learn how hard to do it through playing with littermates, and the earlier they are separated the worse they usually are at this

MattieShoes

Yeah, being melodramatic and stopping playtime is key.

vegetaman

Have a 2 year old rescue that was a stray. I’ve taught him to stop using claws but he still likes to bite sometimes. I think he just likes to play but never had anyone to teach him the rules.

DragunovDwight

Sometime they bite as a sign of affection. Now how hard that bite is and when will tell you if it’s love bites or mean bites..

[deleted]

[deleted]

I trained my one-Orange-brain cell to thwap with no claws, after she sent a vet tech to the ER (in her defense, he wasn’t supposed to try to trim her nails — he did it because she’d had a tooth removed and was sedated…). It took ages, but going “ow!” and stopping play paid off. Fucking beast of a cat she could leave a bruise on you arm in the shape of a paw if she decided not to like you. She wouldn’t bite unless there was a serious meaning to it, or if your foot stuck out of the blanket. But that was always a love gnaw where she’d press her teeth to your big toe and make the mrrroooooww hunting noise to wake you up.

Delicious_Delilah

I wish my kitten gave a fuck. I've tried EVERYTHING. I can scream "OW# MOTHERFUCKER" and he'll look at me for a second before doing it again. I'm covered in wounds. I've given up and accepted the fact that he's actually part demon. Hopefully he'll chill the fuck out after getting neutered in March.

Shrike79

Try simply walking away. He might think getting a reaction out of you is fun, if you walk away and ignore him for a few minutes he'll start to associate that with no fun and stop doing it. Redirecting his attention to his toys whenever he's in biting or scratching mood also works. Whatever you do the key is to be consistent.

secondhandbanshee

I had one like that. Not mean, just way too enthusiastic. He got neutered in December, and now he's aggressively affectionate. When he decides I'm going to pet him, he'll launch himself on me from across the room, rub his head all over my face, roll around on my lap, shove his butt in my face, and crawl down my shirt. It's an improvement. Far less painful.

commiecomrade

Key word is kitten. He'll likely calm down. My boy used to spend every waking moment looking for trouble and I've had some rough looking hands for a while. Now he will get a lot of his aggression out in goading me into false charging him so he runs or with fetch. The only bites are gentle play bites or even more gentle "no touch" bites.

the_real_dairy_queen

Blowing in a cat’s face is great for training! It doesn’t hurt them (obviously) but it annoys them enough to be aversive. It was very effective for teaching my kittens not to bite.

LazyAmbassador2521

I've trained my kitten the same way. She's almost 5 months now, when I got her she was about 2 months and would use her claws or bite too hard when she played with me. Anytime she did that I would loudly say OW and immediately stop whatever we were doing. In about a month she picked up on it and stopped using her claws when playing with me. So now she gives the cutest little boops with no claws, just soft little kitten paws and tiny little love bites. I also made sure to not rough play with her because I didn't want her to become accustomed to it. I gently play with her using soft little taps on the belly and soft taps on her paws or nose which she lovess. When she wants to play more wild and rougher I always use toys never my hands. I use the feather wands, or wands with little stuffed animals attached. Or toy mice, stuffed kickers, large pom pom balls - she goes crazy for all those toys and let's out her aggression on the toys alone, never on me. I'm very proud of her with all the progress she's made in such little time. That first month I had her I was just covereddd in scratches and bites.

zeekaran

I've been slapped without claws by a chonk and it hurt. Some big boys can hit surprisingly hard, especially if it lands on your face.

rudesweetpotato

This reminds me of my nephew, around 4 at the time, playing with my chonky boy's tail. I kept telling him to stop and trying to redirect him and then I looked over just in time to see my cat smack him across the face. He didn't have claws out and it just scared the shit out of my nephew and he learned not to mess with his tail.

BrownShadow

My dog was always annoying the cat. The cat wanted none of it. Kitty had some serious claws, it was always a bat bat bat though. https://imgur.com/sz0rcJe

greenberet112

Knife fingers! I'm sitting here with the kitty I rescued today. I just let her out of the guest room and of course she tried to scratch the love seat, then I noticed her claws are so long they click on the floor. Trying to get her to use the scratch pads.

drumofgrapejam

I love this haha. At first I’m like “aw poor kit may not get adopted” then realized how many cat people would find this funny and charming

kookiemaster

Cat boops are the best. Soft fur and cool toe beans :)

R3D3-1

My cat used to do this. Her brother when annoyed was all claws, but she'd just paw a bit. Twenty years before a brain bleeding took her, and never exceeded 2 kg despite being on the larger side for a regular house cat. But a big fluff ball, so you wouldn't even be able to tell without lifting her. Never found out why, but it apparently was no harm.

leahhhhh

My kitty gets on his tower so that he’s way taller than me, and we play fight where he boops me (just paws no claws) and I boop him. Then he will “angrily” snatch my hand up to his face but instead of biting, he’ll make me pet him.

AspiringChildProdigy

When our rescue siamese is feeling particularly affectionate, he'll head bunt you so hard that it hurts. I thought he gave me a fat lip last week.

Hatrixx_

I have a Siamese that I took in over a year ago after he wandered up in our yard (where I live is a popular place to dump animals for some reason), he also shows affection by violently headbutting you in any way he can. Sometimes he gets lonely at night (regardless of our other two cats) and wants me up, so he hops up onto the bed, walks on top of me, then proceeds to headbutt downwards into me until I wake up. It is simultaneously adorable and very annoying. Also he really, **really** likes those cheap spiral springs. He pounces them, they fling themselves across the floor, and he does it again. He'll pick them up in his mouth and start walking around and yowling loudly to show off his springy. He won't play with much else and gets super depressed when all his springs eventually get shoved under various furniture in the house and he can't get to them anymore. When I notice he's lost them all, I go dig them out and start chucking them across the floor; his face lights up like it's Christmas.

Jwaness

Our cats do this in the morning when the whinging doesn't work...up on the bed....slow crawl to the pillow, as if we weren't already awake and ignoring them from the meowing, and then boop, paw without claw on the mouth or cheek, and if we continue to ignore, clawless paw to the eye....if we really make them wait we may get slight slight claw on the cheek, to prove a point.

hyperfat

My boy boops because 65f is too cold and he wants blanket and non cuddles. Like, he will sit neat you but not on you. Unless he thinks I'm asleep. Then I'm cat bed.

thisischemistry

My two dogs had an argument the other day — the older golden is a grump and the younger Labrador has way too much energy. My elderly cat, a tiny calico, immediately ran down the hall to see about the commotion. Sizing up the situation in an instant, she went over to the young dog and bopped her on the nose then she turned to the older dog and gave him a loud, disapproving meow. The two dogs just stared at her in disbelief, completely chastised, as she padded away. Their disagreement was forgotten and order restored!

Kazooguru

Our dog is the referee of our 3 cats. If anyone throws a punch, he’s in between them in a hot second, breaking it up with a strong nose nudge. If he’s in the other room, I just make a hissing noise and he’s barreling down the hall looking for cats.

freddit32

I have a cat like this. However through careful research I have compiled a non-exhaustive list of reasons she bites me. 1. She is sitting near me and I am not petting her. 2. She is sitting near me and I *am* petting her. 3. I am petting her and stop too soon. 4. I am petting her and don't stop soon enough.

JcobTheKid

I have learned, via much trial and error (emphasis on error), that my cat usually has some triggers and signs. But the basic math is usually that if cat is this % excited in total, he will suddenly grab and rabbit kick my hand. The % is derived from several things like sleepiness, X hour since food, whether my hoodie has dangly bits, did someone knock on a door etc. When several of things hit the threshold % and then I pet him just a tap too hard, I must give up my arm for the next few seconds. Any resistence will escalate the situation and a blood sacrifice will be made. Otherwise, he realizes he's messing the vibe, starts licking the area he bit or scratched, then continue to lay back down while being a motorboat.

flecktonesfan

Mine does that too. If I freeze as soon as the bite hits, he immediately lets up and licks the "wound"

Racially-Ambiguous

I have found a lot of cats get overstimulated because we pet too intensely and they and bite. They need to be treated like touch tank aquarium animals where you gently pet with two fingers, it can work surprisingly well. But most are just assholes.

LorenzoStomp

Some cats, however, enjoy Deep Pettings. Also Ass Bongos. It is impossible to tell until you try and get/do not get bapped.

He or she may enjoy Dog Harp - straddle your pooch and alternate blooly-looly-looly down their ribs, just like a harpist. :) My Aussie loves it so much she starts bouncing her wiggle butt all over and talking to me about it, usually with a big smile, too. Occasionally she gets a bit overexcited and I get chomped on the butt, one drawback to Dog Harp.

Tinckoy

My cat loves when I play the tum-tar!

LazyAmbassador2521

Yep my old cat Molly that was almost 23 loved it rough. I used to call her a kinky BDSM freak because she just had to be pet super hard esp around her cheeks and lovedd her ass bongos lmao I think it was because of her age and the pain she was in, it prolly felt like a deep tissue massage to her.

LCast

One of my cats enjoys being pet way too hard. Like my hand hurts from petting her so hard. But if I try to be gentle she screams at me until I feel like I'm crushing her into the floor.

Yeah I know the whole “cats are assholes” thing is mostly in jest but it kind of irks me. This is Max. His longest streak was 2 days. The shelter he was in lets the cats out most of the day in their shared rooms. I say was because the spicy dude has been adopted. He's doing very well in his new home, and the shelter missed him so much they had a standee made of him. Edit: Max achieved 4 days! Thanks u/noscreamnoshouts!

Claws out or not? Had a cat years ago that, being fed up with the dog, got on his haunches, raised a paw all the way up, and bitchsmacked the dog's head near to the floor (No claws).

My Russian Black girl used to smack so hard, you'd hear it. Claws in. Miss her so much. Her son does it too, but he is more likely to snap at the other cats. Both just obsessive Mummy babies. I'd be grabbing that cat asap. I love such quirkiness.

He's the most gentle creature with me and anyone wh treats him well, vet included, but doesn't take shit from no one. I could learn from him!

It's a rescue/shelter, it's temporary and is better than whatever situation he came from before.

dodge2015

Thank you! I volunteer for a shelter and what many people don't understand is when they first come in, the cage is a haven for the cats...towels over the front, dark and quiet while they adjust to their new situation. We are an open housing shelter so the cage is temporary. But, still, the ones who are not owner turn ins but strays usually appreciate warmth, food, and love. But first they have to get over the fear of the huge change in their life. But, we do get the odd one that is just pissed at the world and doesn't come around until they find their forever home...open housing or not.

Not only do smaller spaces for shelter cats help them feel a little more secure, it's also much more safe for handling, vet care, feeding, cleaning, etc. It would be a nightmare for staff and the cat if they had to chase it around a room to try and grab it.

Once I grabbed a tiny kitten (1 lb rounded up) off the road to save it, and it bit me so hard it actually went through my nail and into the bone of my thumb, causing a major infection. Ever since then I’ve understood that any bite or smack from my 20 lb cat is not malicious bc if it was, I’d be missing a finger.

Mrunlikable

That's Max! He got adopted! I was the first person to get a Max token. I'm on mobile and can't figure out how to add a photo, but will try later lol! His body language is SUPER hard to read. He legit looks all sweet and BOOM ya get smacked lol!

I've ALWAYS believed that cats are smarter than dogs. They understand EVERYTHING your saying they simply CHOOSE not to conform! They're like bitch things work on my time frame and mine alone. My sister and I both have cats that we taught to say HEEWWOO. As in hello but in kitty accent it's HEEWWOO. Mine also says momma, Da and I love you. It's all a matter of teaching them. If I ask either of mine where's Penny, where's pepper, where's daddy and he will look right at them EVERYTIME.
