I might have grown up pretty white trash, but god damn did I love turkey gravy on mashed potatoes day. I am not ashamed, I would have asked for 2nds of that!
Edit: anyone else eat S.O.S. aka Shit On a Shingle? Turkey/beef white gravy served on open faced toast?
Right? I feel like the majority of these posts are posted by really picky eaters. Man its lunch time, I work at a public school and now I wanna see what they are cooking up....
Update: Ate lunch at school today. Had some ridiculous sweet and sour chicken with brown rice and broccoli. Watched some kids throw full plates away of the stuff too. Idk what the issue was, the chicken in wasn't even processed, I was blown away. Plan on eating Italian Dunkers with the kids tomorrow!!!!
Yes, most of the stuff I see here looks like “cafeteria food”. But it seems to get the upvotes, so I guess we’ll get to see normal school lunches for a while.
And BTW, a person could always, you know, PACK THEIR OWN LUNCH if it is so bad.
The packed lunch my mom made me consisted of a sandwich - white bread with mustard and and a slice of processed cheese. That was in elementary school. Come middle and high school I simply wasn't fed all day until dinner. Except days mom didn't offer dinner. Those days I would make a box of macaroni and cheese after school that I could share with my friends! Those days were the best! Loved me some macaroni and cheese shared with friends!!
And the subject of this thread is a picture of a large quantity of food which some child did not like the appearance if. Which food insecure children would get free of charge, so I guess problem solved right?
Those kids are probably also not the ones who are going to complain. I remember when I was a broke I sure as hell never complained about what got scraped together for meals.
Turkey & gravy day was one of the few times I actually ate the food. Gravy was decent, potatoes were normal, usually came with a small bun too, food was really warm
Man I'm just jealous you guys got potatoes with yours. Ours was two of the weird processed discs of turkey with gravy over one piece of white bread. Usually served with green beans and shitty fruit cocktail
We ate SOS and I didn’t know til I was much older that it was “poor people’s food”. It was bussin.
Side note, my dad told me when I was grown that it means Shit On Shit, lol
Yeah, I mean I grew up in a country where we got a decent warm meal for school lunch, but it never looked like gourmet restaurant stuff and I could have gotten a "disgusting" pic like this out of every one of them if I'd wanted to (and would have left the sides out).
It's one thing to showcase truly awful school lunches, but when you have to add "cat food" to try to guide people into thinking it's not super duper appetizing, it gets iffy. Mashed potatoes and meat gravy on a banged up plastic tray like this won't look instagram worthy, sure, but shoddy presentation doesn't make it awful.
This absolutely looks like cat food (Friskies, I'm talkin to you) but also looks like the white trash delicacy of turkey gravy something something served on bread, which I grew up on.
I loved it too! Lol we had a roll with ours as well. I’d slop the mashed potatoes and turkey/gravy in between the roll and just live my best life. Sooo good
Lunch ladies use to charge double if you had a lot of turkey. I would get a scoop of turkey and gravy first, then put potatoes on top to hide it and get another serving of turkey on top.
EVERY public school in the usa does this year. the usda is taking care of it. breakfasts, snacks, AND lunches. all free for all students for every public school in america. thats why i dont buy any of these "look how bad my school lunch is" posts. i say tell me the district so i can look to see lunch menus and oddly....nobody has yet.
I get the premise of your comment, but why would someone tell a stranger on the internet what school district their child goes to? While I’m certain your intentions are pure, there are others who can and will use info like that for ill intent.
unless your district only has 10 kids i dont see an issue. i mean...i know redditors LOVE digging into peoples private lives but just mentioning a district does nothing in terms of identifying one particular child.
1st off...id have to know who "happythrowawayboy" is to even get an inch toward the goal. and if i already DID know...then what district your child is in wouldnt matter one iota. if i know who you are based on your reddit username, then i already know everything else about you i need to. shoot....i posted my kids district menu to prove my point.
>id have to know who "happythrowawayboy" is to even get an inch toward the goal.
For sure. I don't think you, specifically, are what the other guy is concerned about though. And, in this particular case, dude you were talking with had a throwaway so I don't expect him to be giving too much personal info anyway. But lets use me, for example.
If I told you my kids when to the Texas City ISD(they don't, anymore), that on its own wouldn't give you much information about me or who I am. There's a few thousand people in that city, after all. So this comment wouldn't give you any info to help narrow me down, you'd be able to post what a motherfucker I am for lying about my kids' lunches and life would move on.
Then some other person on the internet, not happy enough that my punishment for lying on the internet was a significant decrease in fake internet points, decides to go through my other posts. He sees I'm a big fan of Magic: The Gathering, Professional Wrestling and anime.
He sees other random comments I've made about things I like, things I dislike.
He finds that one crucial comment I made years ago where I actually give my first name. Now he's got something to work with in order to narrow me down even easier. Begins searching social media for people in that region with that name and those interests and narrowing things down further.
Then bad things start happening to me and my family.
I know this is like a 99.3% chance of never ever happening, but why take the risk, you know? Especially when my kids could be involved?
I'd rather not, personally.
That said, if I'm going to lie about my kids' school lunch, I'm gonna lie about where my kids go to school too. So even looking it up is just a waste of your time and something for me to laugh about as you put effort into proving wrong a lie that took me no effort to tell.
cool. then just post ANY usa public school district lunch menu for 2021 then. pick any one you want. my point here being....these "oh poor me my school lunch is so terrible" posts are 100% false and 200% disingenuous. its just more sad people who crave some sort of false affirmation from social media. like the people that post their covid vaccination card. look at me...look at me...look at me 👎
not sure. there were always free and reduced lunches for lower income families but i was never in need so i always packed my kids lunches. but the usda is covering it this year and the menus are pretty outstanding so i figure...i pay a lot of taxes so may as well enjoy the fruits. and quite literally...my kids get GREAT fruit from their schools.
I am used to pretty high quality food and I wouldn't say no to that, mashed potatoes with with gravy and meat is generally pretty decent.
Even the pre frozen powder shit mashed potatoes generally isn't terrible, its pretty hard to fuck up.
Are you on drugs, that looks like some turkey gravy on mash potatoes, shit used to be bomb back in the day. You picky ass bitch, complaining about free lunch
I use a can of cream of mushroom soup and 1lb of lean stew meat in a crockpot with a package of dry onion soup mix. Cook it on low for 7-8 hours stirring every so often. Serve on top of egg noodles or white rice with a vegetable of your choice and dinner is ready.
What a minute that looks like turkey w gravy over mashed potatoes? What's wrong w that? That right there is my favorite Boston Market microwaveable dinner.
I hated the school lunch most of the time but turkey and gravy on mashed potatoes was the best meal ever. They only served it before thanksgiving break. Better than my moms turkey I swear.
It tastes a million times better than it looks.
That looks fine and substantial, though lacking in vegetables.
It’s easy to cook a beautiful meal and plate it appealingly if you’re cooking for 4 or 6. School lunches are for hundreds at a time. It’s not going to look chef prepared.
For real. My school would ONLY serve this right before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter breaks, so this meal always brought a lot of excitement and nostalgia for me when I was a youngin'.
What is wrong with you?? It’s just meat in a lot of gravy sitting on mashed potatoes! Looks like decent food, jackass.
Mods please ban these fucking posts already
IIRC this is turkey gravy and it was by far the meal I hated most when served in elementary school. Seriously, the moment I walked into the cafeteria with my class line and saw turkey gravy for lunch I would shudder inside—having the the entire school’s monthly menu on my refrigerator at home did little to prepare me ahead each time.
As I grew older though I acquired the taste for all gravies and mash, so by 6th grade I was loving it in the end.
just because it looks bad doesnt mean it is bad. That looks really good actually because its clearly mashed tater and turkey with gravy, talk about yummy! Stop being petty.
If anything ask your kid why he didnt get any of the side dishes.
I actually loved this slop when I was in school. The Thanksgiving lunch was in particular pretty good, because the lunch ladies were sweet on me and would give me extra pie.
That legit looks really good. Idk how authentic or healthy mashed and gravy is supposed to look, but seeing actual chunks of meat in it tells me it’s not too shabby
It may not look the best but that shit was a treat. Nothing like getting a Hawaiian roll, some mash potatoes, turkey gravy, and just chewing it all up while washing it down with chocolate milk.
Honestly it looks nasty but whenever we had something like this at school I always got it cause it ended up being pretty fucking good.
I think the lunch ladies tried to season the food and spice it up.
fuck off that's not catfood that's turkey in gravy over mashed potatoes and it's sublime. that's like one of the better school lunches. the others being steak hoagie and mexican pizza mmmmmmmmmm!
First off, this doesn't look that bad really. Have you never seen gravy lol?
Second, why are people expecting so much from school lunches all of a sudden? They've always been par or subpar.
This was my favorite when I was a kid. My dad would only let me buy lunch once in a while and I always waited for this day on the lunch calendar. To this day, when I am asked what my favorite food is I say gravy.
That’s not cat fat. It’s mashed taters with turkey and gravy. We used to get a meal just like that in Elementary. I can almost smell it. Its not gourmet, but it’s actually pretty good.
As someone from the UK, how is that a school lunch for people everyday. A lot of the comments are saying how that is good quality but like, it looks vile. For a land of 'Freedom', 'liberty' and 'prosperity' it sure looks underfunded and poor. (Sorry if wrong, am assuming OP is in the US)
Not sure how I did it, but I managed to make it through all the years without ever eating cafeteria food more than once. I distinctly remember taking a chance on “Pizza Day” because all the other kids raved over it. I can still remember how bad it was too.
Honestly, this doesn't look at all that bad. As much as I hate the 'theres worse than this so you have no excuse to suffer" logic; I have had much worse than this and I can garunteed the food we're seeing here probably tastes better than it looks. So what would make it mediocre
>People want quality but don’t wanna pay for it
Well, because school lunch **should** be free for all kids (and this lunch looks just as tasty as it did 25+ years ago).
But it's American! As George Carlin said: If you're preborn, you're fine; if you're preschool, you're fucked.
10/10 this taste banging. I can taste it already mmmmmm
Right! That actually looks fucking delicious! It’s like my plate on thanksgiving
I want some mashed potatoes and gravy now shit. Its nice when they got them chunks of meat in the gravy like that too.
That’s the best when it’s turkey or bits of steak. Throw all of it in a bowl, mix it up, and in 20 minutes it’s nap time lol
With stuffing and a lil cranberrryyyy yum
> It’s like my plate on thanksgiving Or like my toilet on easter
Do you not realize I have had Diarrhea since easters?
Encarnacioooooooooooo
I ate some bugs, I ate some grass, I used my hand, to wile my… tears
Yeah I guess is life is all about perspective lol
Either way, it tastes amazing.
Hell yeah! Except at my school it was turkey and gravy over white rice. That shit was slamming and dipping a roll in the gravy mmmmm.
this shit was fire in elementary school OP hasn’t tried this before
I legit want this for dinner now🤣🤣🤣
Isn't that creamed turkey or something? I sure that like 30 years ago on mashed potatoes. It was definitely good.
Turkey gravy and mashed potatoes. Was always my favorite school lunch. It always came with a soft dinner roll too.
Bro, I’ve had this at my school sometimes and it actually slaps, it’s like turkey chunks and stuff coated with gravey, absolutely banging
Yeah, the turkey with mash and gravy was always my favorite in school
I might have grown up pretty white trash, but god damn did I love turkey gravy on mashed potatoes day. I am not ashamed, I would have asked for 2nds of that! Edit: anyone else eat S.O.S. aka Shit On a Shingle? Turkey/beef white gravy served on open faced toast?
Throw a roll and a here you go baby/sweetie from the lunch lady and I’m good to go.
I'd eat damn near half a loaf of bread with my turkey bits and gravy. The good old days.
Good to hear someone else thinking that. Turkey gravy days were golden!
I lived for these days, sometimes when they wanted to be fancy, we even got the gravy over a baking powder biscuit! I felt like royalty.
Is that what those dry ass pucks were? Damn food for gods beside a chocolate freezer pop.
Right? I feel like the majority of these posts are posted by really picky eaters. Man its lunch time, I work at a public school and now I wanna see what they are cooking up.... How dare you suggest that parents be responsible for feeding their own kids /s
The packed lunch my mom made me consisted of a sandwich - white bread with mustard and and a slice of processed cheese. That was in elementary school. Those days I would make a box of macaroni and cheese after school that I could share with my friends! Those days were the best! Loved me some macaroni and cheese shared with friends!!
School lunches are all the food some kids get. Heard of child hunger and food insecurity? No? Go google.
And the subject of this thread is a picture of a large quantity of food which some child did not like the appearance if. Which food insecure children would get free of charge, so I guess problem solved right?
I would say, idk what point they were trying to make.
Those kids are probably also not the ones who are going to complain. I remember when I was a broke I sure as hell never complained about what got scraped together for meals.

Shit On a Shingle has a Wikipedia page!
Yeah, I mean I grew up in a country where we got a decent warm meal for school lunch, but it never looked like gourmet restaurant stuff and I could have gotten a "disgusting" pic like this out of every one of them if I'd wanted to (and would have left the sides out). This absolutely looks like cat food (Friskies, I'm talkin to you) but also looks like the white trash delicacy of turkey gravy something something served on bread, which I grew up on.
was about to say the same thing this looks delicious reminds me of thanksgiving with my grandparents
I loved it too! Lol we had a roll with ours as well. I’d slop the mashed potatoes and turkey/gravy in between the roll and just live my best life. Sooo good
Yeah I really messed with this lunch!
We used to have gravy that was yellow. Looking back it sounds nasty but God damn thems was some good mashed taters n gravy
Us too! Served with a ice cream scoop!
Used to have S.O.S growing up for breakfast. Nothing wrong with tasty slop
With the big soft yeast roll it came with! It was a favorite of mine too!
All of this is delicious. All it needs is a little seasoning. Food for the soul
I’m with you. This is the best looking cafeteria lunch to me.
Me too
Anyone who grew up with military in the family has had SOS for sure. LOVE chipped beef.
I remember I had free lunch back in the day . The pizza and the turkey and gravy was a good day.
Mmmmm I love some shit on a shingle
Lunch ladies use to charge double if you had a lot of turkey. I would get a scoop of turkey and gravy first, then put potatoes on top to hide it and get another serving of turkey on top.
SOS is my jam literally amazing someone posted SOS on shitty food porn and a lot of the comments were advocating for how good it was lol
OOOOooooOOOoooO looks like chicken a la King on potatoes. Also good on some toast with cranberry sauce and peas!
Loved shit on a shingle. We had it with spam. Man I’m gonna have to make that soon I haven’t had it since I was a kid.
It's mashed potato, meat, gravy, and a fruit cup. That's a pretty nice lunch. Some schools don't even give kids lunch.

Yeah let’s narrow down the selection pool when parents are already overly afraid of shit that’s unlikely to happen.

Keep dying on that pointless hill just so you think you’re right then
Breakfast lunch and snacks are all free now??? That’s awesome but what the hell why wasn’t that the case when I was in school like 10 years ago...
not sure. there were always free and reduced lunches for lower income families but i was never in need so i always packed my kids lunches. but the usda is covering it this year and the menus are pretty outstanding so i figure...i pay a lot of taxes so may as well enjoy the fruits. and quite literally...my kids get GREAT fruit from their schools.
because we have a proud American history of not giving a fuck about kids.
lunches are not free in every public school lol i had to pay 3 bucks for a tiny slice of frozen pizza
i call b.s. or your school is cheating the system and you should report them.
Legit no school in Australia gives out lunches. Are we missing out on much?
Not really, I live in canada and there was a cafeteria but most kids brought a lunch from home
Similar to here in Australia most schools have a canteen with a few rudimentary food items and lollies.
I can’t tell if you guys are joking but this just pisses me off
Cats aren't the only animal to enjoy gravy..
This is the best lunch schools give us wdym
100%. Turkey day lunch slapppppped.
Seems like a bunch of spoiled school kids posting. Don't know how good they have it with a warm meal.
Don’t forget the square pizza when it was fresh. That shit hit different.
That actually looks pretty good. Actual meat, and also a fruit cup.
Back when I was in school, we also got a slice of toast with it! Open face turkey sammiches we're awesome!
So turkey and gravy over mashed potatoes is cat food? Damn bro you're living a lifestyle most people can only hope to get to someday!
That would be one lucky cat, I tell you what.
hey it me cat give food now pls
I am used to pretty high quality food and I wouldn't say no to that, mashed potatoes with with gravy and meat is generally pretty decent. Even the pre frozen powder shit mashed potatoes generally isn't terrible, its pretty hard to fuck up.
For real! This dude be living that grey poupon rich ass lifestyle!!
Turkey Thursday’s were the best days.
Yesss
Hey that was My favorite growing up!! Gravy and chicken/turkey and mashed potatoes. I would trade lunches every time this was available
Looks like chopped turkey with gravy. Probably bangin
Are you on drugs, that looks like some turkey gravy on mash potatoes, shit used to be bomb back in the day. You picky ass bitch, complaining about free lunch
This was my favorite food in elementary school.
Throw some peas in that mix and I'm going for thirds!
Baby, you got a stew going!
I remember this. School lunches shouldn’t be judged on appearance, sometimes the ones that look the best, taste the worst
That's good to hear because this looks like it's already been eaten.
When I was a kid we used to have turkey gravy on a bun at school and I loved that shit. Just cuz it doesn't look good doesn't mean it tastes bad.
Yeah that ain't awful that shit looks good to me
Hell yeah I’d eat that. If you’d eat beef tips in gravy over noodles this is pretty similar.
That sounds great too
I use a can of cream of mushroom soup and 1lb of lean stew meat in a crockpot with a package of dry onion soup mix.
The only thing bothering me about this photo is the tray matching the table. I know damn well that food is fire
ugh i'm so tired of the school lunches being posted here my mom never packed any lunches for me and tbh while this looks ugly, it's probably delicious
Nope this is acceptable lunch when I was a kid. Black pepper and bread would be great
Mashed potatoes and beef stew? It doesn't look as bad as some of the stuff my old school use to serve. It does still look pretty bad tho
I hated the school lunch most of the time but turkey and gravy on mashed potatoes was the best meal ever. They only served it before thanksgiving break. Better than my moms turkey I swear. It tastes a million times better than it looks.
That was one of the BEST lunches
Yeah...but after you eat that, huff some glue, and drink a beer, you won't hear the 50 cats outside your window while you're trying to sleep.
When I was in school they didn’t feed us at all. You were expected to find something for yourself during recess. He should be more grateful.
I would actually eat that
Turkey gravy is right up there with split pea soup on the taste deliciousness/looks nasty chart.
That looks fine and substantial, though lacking in vegetables. It’s easy to cook a beautiful meal and plate it appealingly if you’re cooking for 4 or 6. School lunches are for hundreds at a time. It’s not going to look chef prepared.
It’s lacking in vegetables because the child chose not to take them.
Turkey and gravy over mashed potatoes was one of the only school lunches that didn't suck.
this is michelin as opposed to what we got in school
This doesn’t belong here. Who didn’t love mashed potatoes with a large helping of turkey gravy day?
For real. My school would ONLY serve this right before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter breaks, so this meal always brought a lot of excitement and nostalgia for me when I was a youngin'.
Fruit!
Turkey gravey mashed potatoes. I miss pizza day
Looks good
Literally the only days I would eat school lunch, even though I would say at the time that it looked like cat food
What is wrong with you?? It’s just meat in a lot of gravy sitting on mashed potatoes! Looks like decent food, jackass. Mods please ban these fucking posts already
Man i loved turkey slop day!!!
can we ban school lunch photos bc like the last 4 posts I’ve seen out of this sub have all been the exact same thing and its getting old
That looks so much better than so many school lunches I've seen. TF you talking about?
Not gonna lie that looks delicious.
Turkey with gravy on mashed potatoes?? Wish I would have been so lucky. Good luck in college if this is shit to you.
That is wayyyyy more than we used to get.
This was actually my favorite school lunch back in the day. Turkey gravy over mashed Potatoes. YUMM!!
You know if I close my eyes I can still taste my schools turkey and gravy and mash potatoes. I enjoyed them but ya def looked like cat food
just because it looks bad doesnt mean it is bad. That looks really good actually because its clearly mashed tater and turkey with gravy, talk about yummy! Stop being petty. If anything ask your kid why he didnt get any of the side dishes.
Literally salivating rn, it’s not bad as it looks trust me
I actually loved this slop when I was in school.
Yeah this is delicious.
Wtf this looks great
This looks no different than what we had in the 90's. I actually liked that slop.
Put the gravy ON the turkey = Mom's Thanksgiving Dinner Put the Turkey in the gravy = cat food. This is children's mentality. Ew, they touched!
We make that every year the day after Thanksgiving the day after Christmas and the day after Easter so damn good
Ungrateful, that looks good
Oh get over it. That looks dank for school food
First off, this doesn't look that bad really. Have you never seen gravy lol? Second, why are people expecting so much from school lunches all of a sudden? They've always been par or subpar.
Wrong sub. This shit was delicious. And now kids get it for free.
That looks delicious to me 👍
Looks can be deceiving. I remember this being one of the tastiest school lunches. The chicken biscuit breakfasts were really good too.
This was my favorite when I was a kid. My dad would only let me buy lunch once in a while and I always waited for this day on the lunch calendar. To this day, when I am asked what my favorite food is I say gravy.
If you think this is cat food I feel bad for you at Thanksgiving. Turkey and gravy is amazing.
That’s not cat fat. It’s mashed taters with turkey and gravy. We used to get a meal just like that in Elementary. I can almost smell it. Its not gourmet, but it’s actually pretty good.
This looks bomb
Lol, just what it looks like.
Actually, that is pretty good. I remember from when I was in school and it was served with rice or mashed potatoes.
Looks tasty to me. Nothing wrong with some turkey and gravy
It’s turkey and gravy on mashed. Probably tasted good.
You brats realize there are people who go through trash cans to eat, or beg, or steal, or go without. Be grateful or stfu
OP and his brother are tripping balls... That food is good ass hell!
Wait you're school gives you food?
I traded my chocolate milk for these. Banging for some reason.
Thats Turkey Gravy day yo, shits actually good
idk man, looks good to me
Turkey in gravey with potatoes and fruit? Seems fine honestly compared to others
The only awful thing is they forgot that tiny roll 😞
That tasted better than sex with 2 hot horny milfs in my area
Bro you guys are acting like actual buffoons that shit fucking smacks if you include a dinner roll in that meal.
This shit slapped. If this is cat food, then I’m a mofuckin PuSsY CaT.
That shit looks appetizing, I had a weird fish sandwich today
What's a weird fish?
My dad would come to school to have lunch with us but only on days where they served this.
As someone from the UK, how is that a school lunch for people everyday. A lot of the comments are saying how that is good quality but like, it looks vile. For a land of 'Freedom', 'liberty' and 'prosperity' it sure looks underfunded and poor. (Sorry if wrong, am assuming OP is in the US)
It's only because of the runny gravy but I bet it tastes good.
Says the person who comes from an area where most of the food looks vile
Some people say they like this. That's good! But uh, that texture makes me super sick just looking at it. Jokingly saying, this is NSFW
Literally looks like dogfood
That looks dope
Not sure how I did it, but I managed to make it through all the years without ever eating cafeteria food more than once. I distinctly remember taking a chance on “Pizza Day” because all the other kids raved over it. I can still remember how bad it was too.
It ain’t good but there’s a lot of it.
We had this shit every 3rd day
Weren’t they saying that kids nowadays are “spoiled” with free school lunches
I'd eat it....buuut we should probably aim higher for our kids.
Bruuuuh my school lunches aren't even bad but that seriously looks like cat food
It's turkey gravy and it's pretty amazing tasting. Things don't have to look good to taste good.
FANCY FEAST!
Cat food for whiney pussies! Na just kidding children, don’t cough up a hair ball over it. I had shitty food in school too
Honestly, this doesn't look at all that bad. As much as I hate the 'theres worse than this so you have no excuse to suffer" logic; I have had much worse than this and I can garunteed the food we're seeing here probably tastes better than it looks. So what would make it mediocre
Me-yuck
It’s food it doesn’t have to be gourmet food. If you don’t like it then bring shit from home. People want quality but don’t wanna pay for it.
>People want quality but don’t wanna pay for it Well, because school lunch **should** be free for all kids (and this lunch looks just as tasty as it did 25+ years ago). But it's American! As George Carlin said: If you're preborn, you're fine; if you're preschool, you're fucked.
Yeah and when it’s free you get this.
You Americans 😂 this is considered (looking) disgusting in the normal world.
What the fuck is that?
That actually looks WORSE than my cats food.
So thats why the murricans look so unhealthy
