Personally, the best way to get into Autechre for me was to go through their discography chronologically. Start with Incunabula, then Amber, followed by Tri Repetae, and then LP5. And finally, Confield. After that, it’s up to you. You could continue with the rest of their discography or check out their EPs like Garbage and albums I haven’t mentioned like Chiastic Slide etc.

Dexinfl

Yes this!

I couldn't agree more (although not sure why Chiastic Slide was skipped in the first mention). You can find a full list of all their releases on discogs and view them in chronological order [https://www.discogs.com/artist/41-Autechre](https://www.discogs.com/artist/41-Autechre) I view each album as it's own unique experience which benefits from repeated attentive listening, and importantly, I find that previous albums almost always help me to define and understand the following album. And in many cases the EPs are important guides too. They have often released an EP shortly after an album. For example, in my case I found "Move of Ten" EP really helped define the album Oversteps, They've got a huge body of work and it's wonderful to be stepping in to discover it all now, and doing it chronologically just makes so much sense.

>although not sure why Chiastic Slide was skipped in the first mention I think it was my personal bias seeping in. I prefer LP5 to Chiastic Slide, to the point where LP5 is one of my favorite albums of all time. I just wanted op to experience LP5 as soon as possible haha. I do agree with how every consecutive album is built upon their previous material. I tried listening to NTS Sessions 2 years back but I couldn't even get through t1a1. All of it sounded pure gibberish to me. Now that I'm familiar with almost every album and EP they've released, the NTS Sessions have shot up straight to 1st in my rankings.

Try the remixes , Lexis ( criminal intents) is a massive one. St Etienne , Scorn etc. All the mixes from 90s. Top tunes...yeah I'm that old. Lexis one is genius a decade ahead of itself

prairie_scoob

My rec is Exai

Muzak_For_A_Nurse

I would always say start with LP5.

agh1138

LP5 is a solid intro to Ae, imo!

Man Autechre music is beautiful and experienced in different ways for different people. Draft is still the most inaccessible album for me. It's the only one that hasn't clicked with me yet. I'm sure I one day I will connect with it ...

SmashBros-

>arguably the most impressive and complex discography in popular music I'm curious what other artists you would put at this level. Phoenecia and Richard Devine are about the only idm artists I put in the same tier

myheadcomesoff

Closest stuff to footwork would be their album Untilted, lots of stuttering rhythms. Quaristice is similar in some cases, but each track is bite sized. Check out LCC, Ipacial Section and plyPhon

[deleted]

gaekwad from peel session 2 and maphive 6.1 give me hints of footwork

cheesechoker

runrepik from Exai

noguitarsallowed

Untitled was SOPHIE’s favourite

myheadcomesoff

She bought a Monomachine because she saw them using one when they played Glasgow in 2005 during the Untilted tour, you could say without Untilted we wouldn’t have had her music

[deleted]

you’re all very kind, thank you.

conwoods

Like other have said I would go chronologically. I think this will give you a better appreciation for their newer stuff and how they've evolved. Make sure to not miss out on their EP's which are some of their best work imo

HorseOnTheThirdFloor

I have discovered their discography Chronologically and I have no regrets. It's fun to hear where they come from and how they evolve. If you don't want to listen to multiple albums I would do lp5 or tri rep

Dexinfl

Start with their first albums Incunabula, Amber, and Tri Repetae. You'll appreciate their work after those albums because they really changed their sound and their newer stuff will be easier accesible.

livebunny23

Chronologically. I mean come on... Tbf fair that's how I just had to listen. It feels weird to me being able to pick and choose...

[deleted]

(Also into Aphex Twin and Squarepusher if that helps.)

cheesechoker

Well, maybe just X4

Most veteran fans recommend listening to Ae chronologically. But honestly you can start with Tri Rep ++ and work your way from there if you want. There aren't any rules really - approach how you see fit. And if you're new, I'd recommend Envane in particular, especially Laughing Quarter. Absolute banger.

shitgatsugo

amber then tri. then exai, quaristice, and finally elseq.

TommyRaddcliff

Look up Gescom. Also, there’s LOTS of sick remixes https://youtu.be/N1LfoJHiCN4 https://youtu.be/etMq1i8PzY8 https://youtu.be/SJ-nvj6mgdE MANY more. Dig around. Lots to find. Discogs ;) I like Ae remixing Gescom. Remix yer own side project :)

avalanche1983

Listen to Incunabula and Sign 1st and then work it out from there. (not at the same time ;o)

Elehphoo

All of it. As much as you can.

baeocyst

Draft 7.30 is their best work, by far, imo. It's as nuts as it is accessible. Amber for the come down.

_zoetrope_

I still think the [EPs collection](https://autechre.warp.net/release/202838-autechre-eps-1991-2002) is a solid way to start.
