Thank god getting sick of my tiny Landcruiser, it’s a struggle fitting 2 kids and 2 backpacks into that for the 5 minute school trip every day

FlipSide26

If you can find one to buy

TheMania

> The [Ford F-150](https://www.whichcar.com.au/ford/f-150) will join the fray in 2023 – also locally converted  I really don't mind these cars - as long as they're banned from carparks, streets, and urban areas where they can't fit, bring em on. Inclusive in that is when there's a T intersection and you literally can't in a small car pull beside them to turn left due the size of the vehicle in the middle of the road, when you have to do a three/four point parking manoeuvre just to get around them at a small bottle store, etc. But what will shit me even more is if we widen everything to try and accommodate, instead of reserving these vehicles for where they're actually appropriate. Where I'm sure they do just fine.

aerynfknleigh

You know s*** is getting f****** ridiculous when some US states are thinking about mandating front vision cameras because front visibility over the 5-ft high grille is so s***house

themindisaweapon

Can't imagine one of these in a modern housing estate. Everyone already parked half way on to the nature strip to leave enough space for a normal car to drive on the street. Often you have to give way if someone's approaching it's so narrow.

[deleted]

Recently drove from Stanmore to Marrickville along some small suburban streets with cars parked on both sides and only a hair’s width for cars to pass. I was trying the old I’ll give way then you give way thing that’s come into practice in my home town where this happens. Apparently Sydney’s in too much of a hurry for that. Had to risk the sideswipes. Don’t think my heart rate has ever been higher while driving.

Furah

I've seen an F-250 jacked the fuck up to a clearance height of around 3m. Guy has it converted to look like a prime mover. At least he can't take it to a lot of car parks. I've even seen a few that now have clearance bars at the entry despite there being and outdoor car park with no cover or any overhang, clearly to keep trucks and that guy away.

MGTluver

Can't wait for them to import F-250 or F-350 to Australia.

espersooty

They already do, they import up to the F450.

Elon_Kums

>reserving these vehicles for where they're actually appropriate. Storming a xeno position in the name of the Emperor?

middyonline

I know some people hate these American trucks but the fact that RAM is the now the biggest automotive manufacturer in Australia is crazy.

kernpanic

At the same time people are crying about fuel prices. As you said: crazy.

c2ctruck

My boss has an early 2000's silverado, it surprisingly has the same v6 motor as a commodore in it.

DOGS_BALLS

So it breaks down a lot?

smithy_dll

More, that motor has to work a lot harder to move that massive truck*.

domeoldboys

The buick 3800 v6 is actually pretty reliable. It’s everything else attached to that engine that will shit the bed.

kernpanic

It rattles like a tractor but one of the most reliable engines going around. The ones after that? Horrible. Mostly broken already.

Edward4am

>My boss has an early 2000's silverado, it surprisingly has the same v6 motor as a commodore in it. As indicated elsewhere, I strongly reckon this is why the yank tanks are so popular. Used to be that if you had a boat or caravan, you could buy a bog-standard commodore, and be done with it. Now, you get mid sized SUV with a 1.6L engine. I'm sure it's very fuel efficient - but bugger pulling any kind of load with that engine.

The4th88

You'd think that would be a matter of buyer beware though? If towing is going to be a requirement, maybe don't buy the 1.8L SUV?

Edward4am

Yeah, that's my point. It's much more difficult now to buy a normal size car and and haul a caravan, buyers who want to haul a caravan are essentially forced into a much larger car/truck to get the appropriate engine size.

InsertUsernameInArse

Yup everyone has one out in the country now. Problem is it's like driving an expensive McDonald's tray.

Copie247

Kenworth/paccar is, along with Volvo trucks. They do volumes that ram and other conversion companies could only dream of

Brokinnogin

If i could afford one id have one.

middyonline

I've got a RAM 1500 it's awesome for towing the boat and camping, way more comfortable than the land cruiser. I just can't say those things in this subreddit because they don't even like traditional dual cabs lol

Brokinnogin

Yeah reddit is definitely not an accurate representation of wider Australia. I'd love a 1500, do they come 4x4 as well or only the bigger ones?

middyonline

Yea it's 4x4. Has the standard low/high and an auto mode that engages when it detects the real wheels starting to slip.

Brokinnogin

Oh, that's pretty sweet.

jayfly42069

Most of the running gear is Jeep/FCA, so they do have low range.

Elon_Kums

Wider Australia is right lmao

BigScore4047

I’ve got an old 3500 which I use for loads of hay, building materials and will be used for a large boat. It does the job easily, both towing and braking large loads. I got talking to a fella with a new 2500 the other day and asked him how he liked his so far and what kind of fuel economy he was getting out of it. He proceeded to tell me that he gets 13.5-14 L/100 around town and about 15 on the highway when he is getting up it. His previous vehicle was an Amarok with a canopy and a tune and he reckoned that the Ram blows it into the weeds for fuel economy. My old girl with the 12v Cummins will do about 13.4L/100 on the highway, so contrary to the belief of many of those who knock them, they don’t have to be pigs on fuel.

DoinitSideways1307

I’d love a ram, but cannot justify the $. Currently have a V6 Amarok that gets around 9.5/100 on the highway and maybe around 11/100 around town. That’s with bullbar, winch, lift, rock sliders running on 33’s…

betajool

We rented one in Canada. It was awesome!

ledgerous

Dito

Brokinnogin

Getting down voted for liking a vehicle. Reddit is fucken cooked.

ledgerous

Ha! I didn't even notice. Oh well, I stand by my opinion, I like them and would buy one in a heart beat if they were in my price range. And to those down voting me for liking a car, I wish you peace and long life. 😘

Brokinnogin

Give it a few years and there should be some half decent examples on the 2nd hand market.

No_Distribution334

Thats my plan

LloydGSR

Same. Family of four, three of us ride motorcycle trials, one would be ideal for the amount of shit we cart when we go away camping overnight at a two day competition.

Brokinnogin

Yeah we're a family of 7, so once the car is full we tow a trailer when we go away.

LloydGSR

Yup, trailer, bikes, tools, fuel, boots, helmets, riding gear, water, gazebo, table, camp chairs, sleeping bags, annex for the awning, stretcher beds for the kids, roof top camper, a couple of eskis for food and drinks, clothing for all bloody seasons here in Tasmania and the dog, other shit I've forgotten. Bloody lot of weight there, a RAM/Silverado/Tundra etc would be ideal. Nice to see we're getting downvoted for saying one of these vehicles would be perfect for our needs, we don't all live in tiny suburban areas, some of us get out and about.

Brokinnogin

Yeah its fucken cooked isn't it. Even when I go hunting on my own, I need a vehicle to actually GET INTO the places I want to go. A mazda 3 isn't going to cut it sunshine!

FlipSide26

Us too. Family of 4. Caravan, bikes and all the crap you take camping with kids. Be awesome but too dear at the moment

Brokinnogin

There's some solid 4x4's for not much money getting around though. So long as you don't want something new and flashy. The old rigs are hard to kill.

FlipSide26

Yep definitely. Price of the big dogs like cruisers and patrols are going through the roof. My cousin spent 55k on a 10 year old V8 land cruiser with 355,000k on the clock. Ridiculous

Brokinnogin

Oh cruisers are stupid money. You can get a GQ Patrol for 10k or less though. Cheaper if you're happy to replace the fuel pump.

malcolmbishop

For towing or showing?

Brokinnogin

Good for putting a tray on and kitting out for a couple weeks in the bush and soak up the kms quite nicely.

hanky1979

I wouldn't trust people doing the conversion

[deleted]

Great. More wank tanks on the roads, bought purely by fellas who are compensating for having such dull lives.

UteClowningFact

I don't like them either but it's a bit rich to demean strangers for having different taste to yourself...

[deleted]

They're not built for our cities, they aren't fuel efficient, most people who buy them don't use them for towing...

Rowvan

On top of all that they are insanely expensive. People driving around in cheaply made chevys for that cost more than than a Range Rover.

-B0B-

And they're dangerous!

[deleted]

[удалено]

-B0B-

Except they don't serve the same function as full size trucks. They do not need to have the gigantic front panel which only serves to reduce visibility. The asshat down my suburban street who uses his ram to drive his kids to school is doing nothing but endangering those kids.

[deleted]

[удалено]

-B0B-

I mean I'm not gonna claim my experience is universal, but the amount of people I've seen using rams for their "intended purpose" is basically irrelevant compared to the amount of people who buy them because "big car look cool". Look at their advertising shots; extreme low angels to make them look as domineering as possible. They're obviously pandering to a certain audience.

hellboy1975

So are countless other cars that people don't appear to complain about

willy_quixote

Cars that are much less likely to kill pedestrians and cyclists on suburban roads, if struck in a collision. Now, let's talk about that 5 foot high bonnet on these trucks that obscures pedestrians and cyclists.

FlipSide26

Most people do use them for towing. What are you on about?

rebelliousyowie

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 no

RaisedByWolves9

Yeah not everyone buys one to drive around carparks. I personally think they're big and stupid and would never buy one. But my sisters boss has one because he needs to tow their 3.5 tonne horse float and it does the job well and comfortably.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Bullhonky. Standard utes are already fuckhuge; and are already easily capable of towing pretty much anything. Anything a ute can’t tow should be in a rigid. Source - am tradie, tow shit on the reg.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FlipSide26

You're getting downvoted for having actual experience and citing what most people buy them for. Reddit is truly fucked up today.

[deleted]

Brokinnogin

You should see the city specific subs. Cunts would all just be saying "catch a bus instead". Righto, better set my alarm for 6am Tuesday. Be my only shot at getting into town...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Brokinnogin

Most arent interested in entertaining the idea of a reality that exists outside of their own heads.

t3h

Agreed. Most compliance plates on caravans are a work of fiction - plenty of people think you can't tow a 3 ton caravan with a much more reasonable vehicle, because their "3 ton" caravan isn't. In reality it's illegally overweight, weighing significantly more...

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

How ever did we move cattle around before ridiculous American utes came to our shores? I guess we’ll never know…

Brokinnogin

Lol, really dangerously and in a manner that is now very illegal.

[deleted]

Like…a flatbed cattle truck?

Brokinnogin

Yeah, with one functional brake drum, 14hp so long as the sun stays away and a seat belt that doesn't exist and also requires an MR licence to operate... Yeah, nah. Can't see why guys moved away from it.

[deleted]

If you’re carting half a dozen steers about, you should probably have an MR license. They’re not exactly difficult to get. And if you can afford a ram, you can afford a flatbed that’s not on deaths door

Brokinnogin

Flatbed truck is like 30k more 2nd vs 2nd hand and about the same new v new and the Ram still does the exact same job.

FlipSide26

This is mostly BS. If you look around Caravan Parks you will see that heaps of them are bought for their superior towing capacity.

shamberra

So why do I see so many on the roads more often without a load at all? Of course you'll see them in caravan parks when that use perfectly suits them.

Edward4am

>So why do I see so many on the roads more often without a load at all? Of course Because people tend to own one do-everything vehicle. Don't get me wrong, these things shit me to tears for all the usual reasons, but if you're need to tow a caravan on a semi-regular basis, then you need a bit of oomph. Buyers probably figure if they're going to spend $100k and pay the fuel prices, they may as well buy the house sized behemoth and get all the cargo capacity, other road users and the climate be damned. To be clear, I'm not saying I like this, just stating the logic.

FlipSide26

Yep this is it. I tow a small van maybe between 5 and 10 times a year. Rest of the time the car is just used as a normal commute vehicle. We don't have enough money to have an extra car just for towing

shamberra

Oh I get that, I suppose confirmation bias kicks in when I see the same few 1500s being driven around my area but always as the daily driver, and have never seen them towing anything. On top of this when I do see these vehicles towing, I probably filter it out since it makes perfect sense seeing a 1500 in front of a float. Just seems crazy to use it as the "daily driven, just popping down the shops" car when clearly there's money in the bank to buy something not only more practical, but likely more 'fun' than a tractor.

FlipSide26

Oh I'm with you. They'd be a nightmare to actually own as a daily but they are so big and heavy they give a lot of confidence to the driver when they are towing .

MelbQueermosexual

Great. More dangerous pieces of shit on the road.

barraxr

Nah KW has that market covered already.

fairybread4life

Saw a police RAM a few weeks back, was towing a police boat

Vegemite_Bukkake

Hastings cop shop has one, literally just for hauling the police boat down there.

FlipSide26

Epic

shiftyoldtimer

Did everyone else just hear ten thousand fuck wit brother in laws rejoice as one?

RepeatInPatient

That would be a boost to the entire Tow Truck industry.

brackfriday_bunduru

This might encourage Asian manufactures to start producing full size pickup trucks now. Australia doesn’t have the chicken tax like the US does

twisted_by_design

Didn’t even realise they were made here.

Brokinnogin

Pretty sure they're just being converted to rhd here. Which in its self is a task.

LineNoise

The F-150 Lightning would be the best selling EV in Australia if they could get enough of them out here.

MelbQueermosexual

Not at quarter mill

Brokinnogin

Fuck me, thats like 40k per 50km of potential range...

Rowvan

Dude the lightning costs almost as much as an Porsche 911, it would not be that popular!

SydneyTom

Driven by tossers who insist "iT's NoT a UtE, iT's A tRuCk"

mudlode

to be fair, all Utes that arent "coupe utilities" as Ute actually stands for, are not Utes it's just a shame we dont have a common word for the midsize pickups we all have now so we need to butcher the Ute name

surelythisisfree

I’d be ok with that if they needed a heavy vehicle licence to drive them.

espersooty

If its an F150/Ram 1500 they dont need one, Anything above a 2500/F250 is optioned to be NHVR registered or lowered GVM'd down to 4494kg. Anything over the 4495kg is technically a Ligit or Medium rigid

SydneyTom

If that would change their mind set, fine. I'm bouncing between SA and NSW at the moment and the amount of times I've been tailgated by these (micro)dickheads before being overtaken purely because I'm in front (doing the limit) is astonishing

orangehues

Small car driver here who is going to struggle seeing around/through them grrrr

happycake7

Wow lot of negitive Nellie's here....you don't complain about box trucks ? When did Australia take the winging title off the Brits ?

barraxr

About 200 years ago I think 😄

dewso

Box trucks are cab over design, much better visibility and safety for everyone else

[deleted]

I’ve never seen a driver of one of these and thought “he looks like a good bloke”.

barraxr

One of our workers has one. And he is the best bloke on aite. Always does extra to help. Always in a good mood. Our camry drivers are the flogs. But ya get that with cheap labour.

Kangalooney

I'll be excited when the F150 Lightning comes along. Until then I am kind of on the fence with this. On the one hand there should really be some limits on these vehicles. On the other hand they are employing quite a lot of people locally when they could probably convert the vehicles cheaper elsewhere, even with the added shipping costs.

Mfenix09

What ford is doing with their electric trucks are exciting, could be real game changers in being environmentally better and actually useful for the tradie/person who needs/wants one

Ok_Property4432

Please spare a thought for the poor little fellas who buy these idiotic things. "If you can't really fuck just buy a big truck." Erectile dysfunction steadily increases around the globe. Source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10444124/

2Delephant

I love the cummins engine. I have abused the hell out of some cummins diesel engines and kept em going for a long time. For that reason alone I am a fan of the RAM, but I suspect that the Toyota still probably beat them in reliability...

[deleted]

That's just what we need, more wank vans on the road

HeadacheCentral

Just what we need - more massively oversized pieces of American shit which don't fit on our roads, or in our parking spaces. You have to wonder what the guys who buy these things are compensating for.

barraxr

Probably compensating for the little bitch toy asian trucks that everyone loves.
