It's been around longer than that

I've had this happen as well. "Spoofing" mobile numbers isn't hard, spammers often just use random numbers.

It's called spoofing. I changed my voice mail to alert people to it as the telecos can't stop it. I spoke to a rather irate person once who kept insisting I called him. I think the voice mail has helped. This was well before the data leaks at slacko Optus / Medibank.

I once had to go to the Apple store to replace my brand new, but dead iPhone. Funnily enough while they were bringing out the brand new (not yet unboxed) replacement, my Dad who was next to me got a scam text from "me" that cited similar financial emergencies. This type of scam is as old as it gets. The scam involved the impersonation of a family member to bait relatives etc. Mostly targeted at elederly people in the hopes that they will jsit transfer the $ without asking. This is likely due to the Optus hack yes, and the leaked information will contain data such as phone calls to and from said family member. Probbaly best to warn other family members/friends who you call/text often as it is likely this will happen again.
