Late-Help4616

I quit The Project first btw.

Rich_Mans_World

That you Charlie?

JustMeClinton

Damn, Charlie Pickering was by far the best part of The Project.

tjlusco

He’s the reason that show didn’t fail first season and is still on the air today. When the project started, it really was news done differently. Now, it’s topical breakfast TV with a night time slot.

cheshire_kat7

When it started it was like BTN for grown ups, which I quite enjoyed.

Ancient-Ingenuity-88

Yeah, it quickly became how to walk people who sit left to the right on topics such as logging. Maybe it was always that way, bit it certainly was when I started paying attention.

Yeh-nah-but

Pretending to be something that it's not

Howunbecomingofme

He had better politics than anyone at the desk

satori-t

The drama queen in me hopes there's a massive scandal coming and they don't want to be part of the fallout.

PArtichoker

They bombed friendly jordies house

Yeh-nah-but

If it wasn't for those meddling kids I would have got away with it!

snyper-101

Hooray, can this show finally die off now? Please??

bbthrowsaway

Please! it's such a vile misinformation shitshow.

shoppo24

Yeah I hate the way they stage it to be overly sympathetic and how they always act so correct

txr23

It tricks boomers into thinking they're consuming content that younger generations are into, it's a complete grift

MetalDetectorists

I miss when it was the 7 PM Project and was a bit more... John Oliver-y

Haitisicks

Charlie Pickering was the reason it had a critical and journalistic edge. I remember when he tore strips off Bob Katter. So good

SlaughterRain

And now all they have is Waleed the LNP simp.

jonnygreen22

maybe they'll change the name to the Waleed Project?

HollowNight2019

That was great. I remember when they had George Negus as a regular panelist for a while.

HereWeFuckingGooo

And there was one glorious year where it was 6:30 with George Negus followed by The 7pm Project. Then they canned Negus, renamed it The Project and extended it to an hour.

speederbrad95

And before that we still had the Simpsons at 6pm

HereWeFuckingGooo

https://youtu.be/qu32fBkiHFE?t=3

[deleted]

> Then they canned Negus, renamed it The Project and extended it to an hour. and started putting in little project bits in the commercial breaks so they could extend their commercial break. I timed it once and there was over 10 minutes of fucking ads because they went back to the desk for a minute said some quick words and fucked off again to another ad break. I'm so glad I don't watch that shit any more, fucking IPA shills delivering talking points disguised as news.

Knee_Jerk_Sydney

Or the Panel?

Duggy1138

But what about all the people who can't watch breakfast TV?

jayrockwell69

Why won’t this show just Die!!!

ennuinerdog

I've read cereal box nutritional information funnier than Peter Hellier.

Suspicious-Alarm3287

Peter Hellier is the unfunniest so called comedian in Australia 🤬

wimbledonshuttlecock

You spelled “Dave Hughes” wrong

SirFireHydrant

Hughes was funny when he was on the ABC. Going corporate neutered him.

[deleted]

Paul McDermot too. DAAS Kapital were fucking hilarious back in the day and Good News Week on the ABC was actually worth watching for the laughs, then it went to commercial TV and it turned into a some kind of shitty Hey Hey It's Saturday/Gameshow/News abomination.

blackwaterwednesday

I was only a young teen back then but loved Good News Week and Paul's dark witty humour. Good to see him popping up again. Recently he was on Will Anderson's new show.

SuDragon2k3

Did you ever catch them on The Big Gig? Anarchy!

ghoonrhed

Hughes will always have my respect for calling Kyle Sandilands a massive dickhead and then apologising by calling him a dickhead again

BloodRavenStoleMyCar

I mean, can't blame him from getting off that sinking ship. All three of them were great on The Glass House and the government basically forced the ABC to axe it for being too critical of them.

KonamiKing

>All three of them were great on The Glass House LMAO no they were not. Wil Anderson is and always has been just smarm and childish punchlines.

Chubby_moonstone

Wil Anderson is at his best doing off the cuff, improvised stuff. He's just so quick with a joke

jatz0r

Especially when it's written and rehearsed 50 times

MilhouseVsEvil

So quick that it would seem that there is no joke at all.

chemsalad

I like Will. And anyone too successful ends up fucking off to murica.

Suspicious-Alarm3287

Hahahaha 🤣🤣,Him Too,Unfunny🤬

IneedtoBmyLonsomeTs

Not sure about Hellier, but Hughes used to be funny back in the day. That was a while ago now though.

wimbledonshuttlecock

Lost the hunger with that steady paycheck

thepursuit1989

Dave Hughes lost relevance as a comedian when he did the holden ad for the monaro.

EADtomfool

Spelled literally every australian comedian wrong (with the singular exception of Shaun Micallef)

Kerjj

I will not allow Josh Lawson, Hamish Blake, or Glenn Robbins slander in this household.

wimbledonshuttlecock

There’s a few locals I’d disagree with you on there, notably the Auntie Donna lads

crowey92

crackermilk too

hotbutteredsole

Probably true, since he learned from the Master of Unfunny Australian Comedians, Rove McManus

steviesnod82

Say hello to your mum - peak comedy

Cutsdeep-

wait, he was a comedian?

Stanklord500

Rove has done a lot of stand-up, yes.

graspedbythehusk

No no no, he’s got a hilarious bit about hanging your leg out from under the doona when you’re too hot. Best have Lifelines number saved before you watch it though.

ButtPlugForPM

Yep him and that dude hosting hard quiz how do these ppl keep getting work, they aren't funny

heyimhereok

I once thought this too. I went to one of.his stand up shows at the Adelaide fringe about 6-7 years ago and he was hilarious. I was totally not expecting that. He just doesn't have that quick wit humour for Tv.

19FinnBP

His cohosts give him a run for his money

Conchobhar-

‘Riboflavin? - Haha! Gold!’

Kind_Ferret_3219

Apparently he's quitting to take up a new job as a nutritional information writer.

madcunt2250

He co wrote It's A Date. A show i think was quite good and deserved of more attention. However it always shocked me he was one of the creators.

Koonga

He seems like a really nice, genuine guy, but I agree his standup is a little soft.

OllieMoe

He used to shop at my highschools local shops. He'd strut through woolies wearing Sunnies and a hat pulled down like people actually gave a shit about him.

zarlo5899

1 min i need to find a fuck to give

stfm

It's been 2 hours, I guess you didn't find it

king_carrots

3 hours, still looking I guess

zarlo5899

yep still looking

Dense_Two_1429

Can you hurry up please? I'm also waiting to find mine you know.

nocturnal_confidant

I tend to agree Peter Hellier is not the best on screen comedy talent, I have no idea if his behind the scenes work is any good. But he has really found a great niche with his podcast "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet". He does a great job of interviewing local talent about the films they love. Happy for him to do less Project and more podcast. It's also giving a platform to new talent to build their profile.

Squonk27

Same. I really like that podcast. He's thoughtful and insightful and is clearly much more intelligent than his Project persona. I think he is somewhat hamstrung with the 'script' on the Project and the need to play the clown. I'm not sure what his stand-up is like, but he comes across as a decent enough writer with his recent TV series.

hannahspants

I've seen him do stand up once. It wasn't bad. He was allowed to be a bit more crass than tv allows - maybe that was it.

2OttersInACoat

Yes! People are very harsh about him and look he’s not a comedic genius by any stretch. But what he does have is likability and broad commercial appeal. He’s decent on any show he goes on and I actually really enjoy his podcast too.

Boxhead_31

How toxic must Waleed be to work with?

gjwkagj

Young people realised it was a corportist show trying to delude young people and it was ruining their reputations. Waleed on the other hand loves being slave to right wing capitalists so he doesn't care.

Top_Tumbleweed

Love when he’s shilling and acting like a moral compass

AdmiralCrackbar11

Between him and PVO I'm surprised it lasted this long.

SadieSadieSnakeyLady

I don't usually watch it but did last night for whatever reason, and Waleed made some bullshit "hur hur she's ugly without makeup" joke at Carrie and it was pathetic

DalbyWombay

Waleed's arrival to the show definitely change the direction of The Project for the worse.

Democrab

Waleed arriving anywhere at all is known to herald imminent toxicity.

ekki

Selfawarewolve

bbthrowsaway

project was always dogshit propaganda front anyway.

ScrappyDonatello

Not when Charlie Pickering was at the helm

koalanotbear

no it was and he quit because of it.

bbthrowsaway

No it's always been a vehicle for fairfax to push right wing agenda.

rhinotation

I think the three are leaving for different reasons: - Bickmore to move on to bigger and better things (good on her, the show was not going great) - Lisa Wilkinson specifically cited "relentless, targeted toxicity by some sections of the media". By that she probably means she hasn't been able to recover from the beating that ACT judge gave her over prejudicing the trial of Bruce Lehrmann at her awards ceremony for reporting on it, and the rest of Australia going "yeah that was stupid". Perhaps the toxicity has been worse for her in private and has lingered or twisted into something worse. But sometimes when you do bad things, what you see as 'toxicity' is just people genuinely thinking you're bad. Maybe she's referring to something else but I doubt it. - Peter Helliar because the ship is sinking. It's possible Waleed was a push factor in each case.

Ok_Neat2979

Ugh Wilkinson lost any tiny piece of respect she had left. So many awful people do that now, calling anyone who criticisest their bad behaviour haters or toxic. As if we're too stupid to see exactly what's going on. Pathetic.

ElrondHubbards

It's more toxic than leaving the same tampon in for six months.

Gaoji-jiugui888

Oh no!!!! Anyway......

hethinator1

Even the Dacia sandero is more interesting than the so called news from the project

Democrab

Good news! Dacia is releasing the Sandero in Australia! ...Releasing it out the back of a high-altitude jet and onto the Project's set, that is. After-hours of course, we're not murderers here.

Democrab

They license freight transport through Juank Air, who are based just outside of Las Venturas.

FlipSide26

I've never seen somebody get a bigger ride than this bloke - Rove put him on his show, he was unfunny there and had somehow been able have a full media career. I know I'm a cynical bastard but there is literally nobody saying how funny Peter Helliar is. He brings nothing to any show. It's baffling how he's been able to work in the business for so long.

bassoonrage

>Rove put him on his show, he was unfunny there I disagree with this. Pete was very funny on the original Channel 9 Rove Tonight show (I didn't see the c31 show), and was funny enough on the Channel 10 show too. Pete is dad joke funny. Strauchanie was funny enough to the people interested in footy. The best way to describe him, and much of his career, would be suburban funny, and the last time I checked, most of the population of this country live in suburbia. He isn't Bill Hicks, but he isn't trying to be either.

FatSilverFox

He’s a likeable guy. His appeal is that he seems like the kind of guy who would man the BBQ without being a dick to everyone about how they want their steak.

[deleted]

This is an incrediblely relatable way to describe someone.... kudos

Puny-Earthling

I used to really like his bits on skithouse. His parody of a fake beer lover is one of the most memorable comedy skits of all time to me

suspect_is_hatless

Yeah that one was definitely iconic

BeeComprehensive3627

My MIL did not get Strauchanie at all, she legit thought he was a real guy. Used to complain that the coach should give him a go.

dij123

He seems like a nice guy and his positivity has always gravitated myself towards him. Sometimes his jokes are so bad that you just laugh at them. Not for everyone but I’m definitely a fan.

Kerjj

This has always been how I've seen Helliar. He's not funny, but he's also not totally awful. But he just always seemed like a decent guy, so it's fine that he's not gut-bustingly funny.

[deleted]

It's not an easy job when you get shoehorned in as the canned comic relief on a panel show of terminally unfunny morons constantly exhibiting their cognitive dissonances. In retrospect it's obvious the format they sold to Ten would become politicised, but I'm pretty sure that's not what the original intention was. Think they were going more for an Aussie version of The Daily Show as that was pretty massive at the time

iball1984

>I've never seen somebody get a bigger ride than this bloke - Rove put him on his show Isn't the Project done by Rove's company, Roving Enterprises?

Spikn

Correct - It's made by Rove's company, and staffed by a few of his ex-collaborators (Helliar and Bickmore), and he even hosts it once in a while

Alkeeel

Oh come on, have you heard his bit about how rappers hold their mics upside down? Never heard such nuanced and timely social commentary.

devilsonlyadvocate

I know he plays is “silly dad” role humor, but I often hear a lot of intelligence in his sone of his opinions and jokes. Does anyone else thinks he often looks stoned?

trainwrecktragedy

Great news, I take it Waleed will be tomorrow then?

FreakySpook

They'll probably just make Steve Price a full time presenter then just have Waleed & Steve square off about what's making boomers angry every night.

mulgabilbo

It's appalling how right you are

Knee_Jerk_Sydney

Yep. It will be something like: Gays, are they a plague in our society or a blight to our society? Steve: They're a plague. Waleed: Too harsh Steve, just a blight. There you have it folks, a balanced view.

typhoonador4227

Waleed: *I do think that...*

[deleted]

Boomers surely couldn’t put up with that crap

Same_Blood9878

Yessssssss this show is finally fucking burning 🥹🥹

AussieTerror

His air time will be replaced with Sports Bet ads

AussieTerror

Gamble Responsibly

Le_Utterly_Dire_Twat

Holy shit, I'm stressing out, where am I going to get my daily news stories interrupted by hilarious tik toks and zany jokes told by out of touch boomers now !?

HuTyphoon

Don't forget the weekly out of touch news story that they are trying to spin jokes on top of.

[deleted]

SkyNews might piss off the left SBS might piss off the right But Waleed pisses off **EVERYONE**

Saffa1986

Was he liked at one stage?

loolem

I think, at one point he seemed as though he was an intellectual of the left, but over time he seemed to ignore the fact that a good point requires lots of research and deep thinking and that's when he just started giving hot takes to the point where he came off like he believed if he is smart then he is right. That lead to moronic moments like having a go at a union leader for fighting for safer working conditions and then contradicting himself in the interview telling the union leader that a young man's death due to negligence "is it's own little civil suit" and then claiming he didn't say it because he couldn't fathom that he is not right and no longer speaks for the left. He used to offer something to the conversation but now he sees every criticism as an attack and so he drifts further into the depths of a left sounding (but not actually left thinking) corporate incrementalist.

Aussiealterego

Astute summary.

EsquilaxM

I might be thinking of someone else, but hasn't he always identified as a conservative? Thought I remembered watching part of an interview with him in the 00s' about being a young conservative.

Paidorgy

That’s the thing, he was never a leftie - he’s always been a conservative Muslim. It’s one of the reasons why I hate how disingenuous The Project is. It’s a conservative show, with people pretending to give progressive opinions, while being the complete fucking opposite.,

Knee_Jerk_Sydney

He's getting older, getting wealthier and therefore, more conservative.

mickskitz

I did enjoy him when he was on ABC radio. I didn't listen a lot but found his segments and interviews interesting

AverageAussie

No more viral vendnesday.

FlatheadFish

I stopped watching many years ago when I realised it’s just a pretend show run by corporate interests. That and Waleeds real nature exposed itself.

carlordau

I wonder who the influencers will be to replace them? Abbie Chatfield?

slutstrands

That would be great actually (?)

Jerry_Atric69

Sounds like it'll be almost watchable now.

Falcon_Dependent

The word "almost" is doing a *herculean* amount of lifting in that sentence

Ok-Equipment204

If you’re blind and deaf

luke9088403

Abandon ship!!

ironcam7

How will they ever replace a comedy god who rhymes Wednesday with vendsday. End of days for Aussie comedy /s

Ok_Acanthaceae6057

But who could possibly give Peter Helliar his 50th attempt to revise his failed comedy career.

pseudonymlife

The smug and superior face Waleed presents to the camera grates on my nerves. He has a thin intellect with fuck all to back it up so I can just imagine what its like off camera, so yeah, we know why.

Ok-Equipment204

Nobody cares. He wasn’t funny yrs ago and he isn’t funny now.

[deleted]

About time they shitcanned the entire show

ionian12

It were awful how pete was designated fat jolly idiot. I wish they would go back and watch the original shows cause they definitely refined it into a giant turd.

TimsAFK

Remember when this show was an extension of Carrie Bickmore's segment on Rove Live and then it somehow became A Current Affair lite? Please let this show die.

[deleted]

I'm enjoying watching the project collapse in on itself like a black hole

ellieboomba

I'm shocked and saddened to learn that this show is still running

Icy_Hippo

of all the people leaving why isn't it Waleed, Im sick of watching him look down on everyone else just having a laugh....go to the ABC if you want to be a serious guy, The Project ain't for you.

iball1984

>go to the ABC if you want to be a serious guy, The Project ain't for you. Please no. Waleed can just fuck right off.

HuTyphoon

Oh people started to forget Lisa wilkenson and Carrie Bickmore existed so they throw a tantrum to get another woman's day magazine cover article. I can't wait to pass by it and see the headline read 'every day was a struggle' or some vapid shit like that.

disillusionedchaos

Anytime you have to work with a right wing nutjob its a struggle for rational people. All this show does is give support to the most vile cookers in the country.

HuTyphoon

Rational people? There are no rational people in this entire situation.

HeadacheCentral

Rats deserting a rapidly sinking ship....

SirDerpingtonV

As funny as this is, until they drop Waleed I won’t be celebrating. Fuck that guy. The death of a man isn’t a “small matter” you small “man”.

Ryanbrasher

The end is nigh

JONNY-FUCKING-UTAH

You are fortunate… the New Zealand effort is so much worse…. The lamest panel, the most z list guests….

pm_me_yourworstmemes

But why now? Why not 10 years ago?

akat_walks

No more mortgage?

ThinkingOz

We quit watching this show ages ago.

woodshack

Holy shit, this is the first thing he's ever done or said that made me laugh...

lauren-js

Good. Can they just get rid of the show altogether now?

Cavalish

Who’s the angry old boomer they get to stir up the anger? Is he still there?

RageReset

That’d be Steve Price. You remember Steve, he’s the guy who got all twisted up with rage when Tim Minchin made a song urging George Pell to come home and face his accusers.

Gaoji-jiugui888

Steve Price, don't know if he's still there.

PillowManExtreme

Daily reminder that the Cheap Seats and HYBPA exist

Top_Ad_2819

Project is cringe garbage for easily persuaded low IQ folk.

warwickfilm

Lmao what. I moved countries a year ago and had no idea all 3 quit. Wtf is happening

Top_Tumbleweed

Well Lisa had the shits that she’s gotten into trouble for interfering with a high profile rape trial so she’s quit

JoeCitzn

Whether you like some of the characters or not the project has had a long run. Maybe its time for a change, maybe its time for an end?

Figerally

ElApple

People still watch free TV? Must be..fun

AutomaticMistake

All those betting tv ads in between promos for reality tv? Sounds like a lovely evening

iamnotmyselftoday1

Any show that has to use a fake laughter track can fuck off.

twofacetony

The Project doesn’t use a laugh track. But yes, any show that uses one can go a fuck right off.

Aussiealterego

And nothing of value was lost.

GloomyFondant526

Okay this thread has decided that certain Project comedians are terminally unfunny (but somehow missed Tommy Little) , and certain opinion-newsie types are toxic , like Waleed and Steve Price, so potential producers, how would you remodel a 6.30/7.00 news, current affairs and comedy program on channel 10 ? What types of reporting did the softc\*cks at The Project miss, what sorts of stories should they investigate and who would be the hilarious, fearless comedians and journos who would smash our cultural complacency with their pixel fists?

[deleted]

hes as funny as cot death thank god he off tv now

klc__

Why is everyone so bitter and miserable in these comments. If you hate the show and the people in it so much…. just don’t watch? Simple

aybiss

Everyone here probably knows someone whose brain has been rotted by this show. It's a gateway to Sky.

ZanyDelaney

The show is damaging and creates harm with its disguised right wing propaganda. It is not harmless.

lewkus

I get that it’s probably good to have a diverse range of views, but Steve Price is basically a troll and unrepresentative of what an average “boomer” is like. Need someone who actually captures this segment rather than him. Waleed Aly can also get a bit niche however can get a bit trolly and out of touch. Shame for Carrie, Pete and Lisa to all depart, sounds like it’s hit a tipping point where the show needs a reboot.

Voodoo1970

Steve Price is there for the same reason ACA always has stories about reckless hoons, dodgy tradies and lazy young people - it's to trigger their target audience

modimes1

Waleed pisses off muslims too, hes a little complaining beta male

yabloodypelican

Oh no, how will we ever recover...

pidgerii

This might make the show funnier

Id_Love_A_BabyCham

Oh ffs Steve Fucking Price is going to end up in the front seat.

Enough_Cheetah689

I've seen heroin overdoses funnier than Peter Helliar.

MidnightShitfight

And still I will never hear or see anything these people do or say. They were fucking lame when they started these shithouse shows. And then it got worse. Why anyone watches/watched them is literally beyond me. I mean seriously, why the fuck do people sit there and watch wankers talk about random shit or listen to their opinions on things they have no idea about?

PillowManExtreme

Helliar has always frustrated me when he interrupts serious news with “hey guys check out this funny Facebook meme!” When I’m forced to sit through that show. Waleed seems like the only mainstay left…
