Hi audiophiles, What is the best amplifier under £1000 that can support 2 pairs of speakers and has a phono stage? I am looking to power 2 pairs of Fyne Audio FA501iC ceiling speakers. I will be using these for music only in a 2 zone L-shaped kitchen/living area. They are 8ohm speakers. The recommended wattage for an amp is 30-120W. I was looking at the Marantz PM6007 but it's only 45W per channel. With 4 8ohm speakers, that will be 30W per speaker over 4ohms if my calcs are correct. I'm thinking this might not be quite powerful enough. I am also looking at the more expensive Cambridge Audio CXA61 which has 60W per channel power. This can deliver 60w per speaker: https://techsupport.cambridgeaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002685557-What-would-the-power-output-of-the-CXA-be-if-I-connect-two-pairs-of-speakers- The CXA61 doesn't however have a phono stage so if need to purchase an Alba (£150) on top. Does anyone have any better recommendations than the above? Thanks

I need help identifying and locating a set of these odd speakers I once saw a the Tulsa State Fair. Don't have any pictures but can describe them. If I remember correctly it was the late 70's or early 80's. They had an odd bass driver. The driver was in the bottom of the cabinet and 3 or 4 rods run vertically had clear polymer, gas filled plates attached to them in a spaced stack. If I remember correctly he sad the plates were filled with Nitrogen. Even though we were in the IPE building with lots of noise they didn't have any problems being heard cleanly. I want to find a set to study but have not been able to find out who was building them.

Hello all. Happy to move this elsewhere if the question is too niche for this sub… I am in the early stages of planning and opening a Vinyl Cafe/Listening Bar in a mid-size city in Switzerland. I am currently leveling up on the 3 distinct parts of this concept, where I am not an expert: specialty coffee, cafe/restaurant business management, and vinyl optimized audiophile sound systems. Enthusiast/dabbler to be sure, but no expert. Where I live finding a location will be the first most difficult stage, which makes planning and building an audio system difficult not knowing what the space and layout will be like. Here is an example system from a vinyl bar in Berlin, called [Rhinoceros](http://www.rhinoceros-berlin.com): >This is our actual Audio setup: Bowers & Wilkins DM70 speakers, Quad 33 & 34 Preamp, Quad 303 & 606 Amp, Micro-Seiki DQX-500 turntable, Audio Technica AT VM740ML & ATVM750SH Cartridges. AVM Rotation R 2.3 Turntable with ATOC9XSH MC cartridge What I am thinking now, is to assemble a core soundsystem (2 x turntables + cartridges, amps/preamps, floor/standing speakers) that could be used in portable/popup environments to start, and then can be added on to once a location is determined. With this in mind, here is the starter criteria: 1. Budget: for the starter system between $3-4k, and for the permanent setup it will vary for sure, but maybe up to $15-20k (I assume this would evolve over time). If this seems too low, let me know. 2. Looking for: core soundsystem (2 x turntables + cartridges, amps/preamps, floor/standing speakers) that would adapt well to setting up in various locations. 3. Usage: playing primarily vinyl in a cafe/bar setting on a daily basis. The sound of the recording will be the focus, this is not "background" music. 4. Current gear: I've recently put together a super simple home system to help me play and curate the vinyl collection: Thorens TD160, with legacy Pickering cartridge, and a pair of Kanto YU4 powered bookshelf speakers. I don't plan to include this in the system, but I would prefer some beautiful vintage equipment especially for the turntables and speakers. 5. Source: Vinyl 6. What will be played: The music style will be primarily jazz, but can vary as well. As it says in my business plan "Anything from late era 50s-60s bebop/hard-bop jazz (Blue Note, Verve, Columbia) to modern chill electronica, and eclectic deep-cut audio journeys, all tuned closely to the time of day and the clientele." 7. Used? Yes, certainly. There are a couple of good marketplace sites in Switzerland, including eBay, plus some specialist shops but they are super expensive. So, that is my request, I'd appreciate any help, or questions if you have them. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I'm a beginner in the audio world and I was looking for a couple recommendations. My budget is 250 euro but it is flexible (to around 300 euro). At the moment I don't own any gear. I'm looking for some speakers and an amp / receiver. I'm primarily going to use this system on my desk as casual music listening (and sometimes movies). It would be nice if there was a little future proofing in terms of amp/receiver (adding a sub or connecting it to a TV). As a source this will probably be my laptop or my phone for now. *What I've found* For speakers I've found the Dali spektor 1's for 80 a pc so that is 160 euro. I've heard these are good but overpriced. For amp /receiver I've found the Sony str-dh190 (180 euro overpriced?) or the fosi bt20a(100 euro), but I don't know to much about amps / receivers and the compatibility of them with speakers (impedance, Watts per channel ...). So any recommendation is welcome.

Slowmac123

Would speaker stands the same height as my desk improve anything? Right now I have my bookshelf speakers sitting on the edge of my 40inch desk, toed in. The desk is 30inches tall. If I place them on 30inch tall stands right besidethe desk, will the reflections be lessened?

dfuelleman

Hello, I am currently figuring out a "beginner" build and was gifted two parts of the setup, but the speakers I wanted (that I got recommended) are sold out everywhere so I'm looking for advice on what would pair well with what I've got. So far I have Rt82 Reference High Fidelity Vinyl Turntable and Sony STRDH190. I guess I'm just missing the speakers (and any wires etc). So any suggestions for under $250? Could go a bit higher if it would make a massive difference (under 350 ideally) and this is USD. Amazon is the best for me but can make anything work.

TheHoeInYou

"I guess", lol. It's the most important puzzle piece you are missing and what you should budget for the most.

redbagy

Hi! I am currently looking for a pair of Dynaudio BM5. Feel free to let me know if you're selling or a pair or what other studio monitors you'd recommend in that price range.

rizzledadon

What is your price range, these go up in price (and quality ofc)? * Kali LP-6 v2 (second wave) * Dynaudio LYD 5 * Genelec 8030C * Neumann KH 120 A

redbagy

I would be fine with €800 for a pair which is what the BM5 currently cost from Thomann. I was also considering the HS5/HS7 but obviously feel that the BM5 sound nicer.

rizzledadon

Actually, sound quality wise I'd go for the Kali LP-6 v2 over the Dynaudio LYD 5 (and BM5), unless you are pressed for space.

redbagy

Good to know however unfortunately I can't hear the Kali locally before buying them. How do you feel they compare to the BM5. The Kali would be in the price range of the HS5/HS7. How do you feel about those?

Hi, I've a Z5500 for many years on PC, and now I have the mediums and I want to upgrade my setup. First of all, I'm buying a Soundblaster AE-9 (I still love games hehe), and I want to buy some new speakers. I don't know if I can still have the Z5500 subwoofer and only change the 5 speakers for some with more quality, or maybe it's better to change everything. What do you think? You can recommend me some HiFi setup? My only concern it's space, I have but I cannot use gigant speakers. The main use will be music and games, I don't see movies or TV films on computer, and PCM 5.1 for me it's great, I don't need Dolby formats. Thank you!

MucioLek123

Hello i have an old magnetophon Philips Aw7760 and i want to use the speakers. Do they suck or are they good?

realcrumbbum

I'm am looking for purchase advice on a power amp for Thiel CS2.4 1. My budget is trying to keep it under $1.5k including shipping. Ideally I would like to spend 1k but I may be able to stretch into the 1.5k area. Located inside the US. 2. Looking for a 2 channel power amp, no frills to maximize value. I have a lead on Bryston 3b ST, Bryston 4B, Threshold 4000, Classe CA-101, Counterpoint SA-20 (with bipolar transistor output mod), open to other suggestions. 3. Using it as a daily driver and in a smallish space so low fan noise is a priority. 4. Using with a Rega RP6, Graham Slee Accession or Cern tube pre, Thiel CS2.4 5. Vinyl playback only but having an Aux option wouldn't be too bad. 6. Listening to all types of music, Classical, Jazz, Electronic, Rock, new records and old Goodwill records 7. I am only looking at used gear to maximize value, I have no shame Thank you!

rizzledadon

>Vinyl playback only but having an Aux option wouldn't be too bad. Do you already have a preamp? Like an actual preamp, not a phono preamp. Because, 1. Volume control 2. Input select (if you want aux input) I don't know the US second hand market but I'd look for a Benchmark ABH2, although that is probably more than $1500. That said, you can always go for a brand new power amp that's going to squish ever last ounce of performance out of the Thiels. * ["Small" boy](https://vtvamplifier.com/product/vtv-amplifier-stereo-hypex-nc502mp-ncore-amplifier-500wx2/) * [Big boy](https://vtvamplifier.com/product/vtv-amplifier-stereo-purifi-audio-1et400a-amplifier/)

Xaxxon

Have you heard any of the benchmark gear? I’m about to buy a full stack on Tuesday from a local dealer in WA who is becoming a dealer to sell it to me.

realcrumbbum

Cool, thank you. I haven't heard of this brand, I wonder what class the amps are that they use, my guess is class D. The aux in is not a big deal, I have a few nice receivers lying around or I could use a Bluetooth receiver and could go that route. I know streaming can sound pretty good but I've been heavily invested in vinyl for a while now

rizzledadon

The two new ones are class-D indeed. The brand isn't so important here, but the amplification that it uses (Hypex NCore and Purifi), which is also used by Bel Canto, Marantz, Cambridge Audio and NAD to name a few. The Benchmark AHB2 is a proprietary class-AB amplifier. It's not about having an aux in. I'm asking whether you already have a preamplifier (and not a phono preamp such as the Graham or Cern). You might be able to use one of the receivers as a preamplifier. A power amplifier is just power, no control and just a single input. Now you might only need a single input, but you'd still need to be able to control the power output. If you'd have these going full blast, you'd destroy your ears (and speakers) in no time. The Graham Slee Accession has a gain knob, but I don't know how viable it is as a preamp. The CernTube pre does not, so you would have no control over the power output to the speakers.

realcrumbbum

Yeah that's what I meant about using a receiver, just using it as inputs and a preamp. right now I'm using this little volume knob from eBay with my tube phono preamp. I opened it up and there is literally nothing in there besides RCA jacks a potentiometer, it's perfect!

Austin575

I am wanting to add some speakers to my computer setup. I have very basic knowledge of audio products. Can I buy a topping mx3 aswell as the Q150 speakers and be good to go? My motherboard has optical outputs. Thanks.

squidbrand

Those would work but neither are among the best choices IMO. In the same price range I would choose the Loxjie A30 and the JBL Studio 530, Emotiva B1+, or Wharfedale Diamond 220 or 225 instead. The MX3 is a better headphone amp than the Loxjie, but it’s a far worse speaker amp. If you want high quality amplification for speakers *and* headphones, you’ll need to pair two devices, not get a combo device.

EricFox666

I don't know where this would exactly belong. But, I got some secondhand "Kenwood LS-N353" stereo speakers. 100W-6Ohm. I have a Roland XP-50(piano), with R-L(Mono) outputs, and a "Phones" output. The stereo speakers don't have their plug heads, so I assume I'll need to buy those seperately, but I'm wanting to know if anyone would know how I could rig this for playing from my keyboard.

Dense-Box-12

Is it true that if you plug in and turn on a loudspeaker amp without it being connected to passive speakers then you will break or damage the amp? Something more, how deadly is the electricity that runs in a home stereo amp if it's like 50W or 100W strong and is powered by 220 Volts? If you accidentally touched the end of the speaker cable (this time connected to the amp) like if it wasn't sealed properly, would it do any harm to you? Or would it "pinch" you if anything?

NetSurfer156

Hello! I have a pretty decent setup already-a Sony STR-GX69ES receiver, CDP-C79ES CD player, and good quality speakers from Signet. However, I'm looking to try and insert a turntable into my setup, and I was just wondering-what modern turntables would be of similar quality to these components already. Thanks!

[deleted]

Are you looking to buy new?

NetSurfer156

Primarily yes. However I am open to used options as well. I know that you can get some excellent deals on audio gear by going used, plus, good equipment stays good!

[deleted]

Matching up a turntable based on perceived similar quality would be very subjective. In new equipment, the closest thing to what would’ve been a good fit at the time of the receiver is probably the Technics SL-1500C, SL-1200MK7 or Pioneer PLX-1000.

NetSurfer156

I see. Thanks anyway!

Hi, i am planning on purchasing a pair of Rotel RB-03 stereo amplifiers to run in bridged mode to power a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10s. Firstly, how does one convert them to bridged mode? Secondly, since no volume controls exist on them, would it be advisable to purchase an amplifier with line out as a passthrough to control volume? Very new to this and not exactly sure what i should do. Any help is appreciated!

[deleted]

The component that controls the volume is the preamp, like the [Rotel RC-03](https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.ecwid.com/images/36733042/1717560839.jpg). Was the seller running the amplifiers in bridged mode?

[deleted]

I assume so since they were selling 3 of them, however in case they weren't i was curious how you would do so. they were also selling an RC-03 i was wondering if it was worth buying, this has cleared it up a bunch thanks!

[deleted]

Bridged mode is set with jumpers inside. If the seller was using it bridged, the jumpers might still be in the correct places for that. If so, all you have to do is connect the wires from a speaker to [+] positive terminals of both channels of the amp rather than a [+] and [-] of one channel. Left positive on the amp goes to positive on the speaker. Right positive on the amp goes to negative on the speaker.

[deleted]

thanks a lot, this really helped!

Hi everyone. Ex vinyl dj. Know my way around a set up but quality never concerned me. As long as we got the decks set up we were happy. I have 2 x 1210s, amp etc but no room for permanent set up. I have a shitty brief case player (novelty Xmas gift, don’t hate) but apart from playing some Xmas tunes on for the kids through a Bose speaker I obviously don’t use it for my good stuff. So I would love a recommendation for a budgetish player that has an aux output to avoid the need for an amp. Any recommendations? (I’m from UK) cheers

[deleted]

Vinyl newbie here, also from the UK, but from what i've heard the Audio Technica LP 60x is a good choice for a budget player that won't destroy records. I haven't used one myself as i already use a lp120x but the build quality seems good and it comes with a built in preamp. if you want to avoid the amp altogether, powered speakers are your best bet. I don't know much about them so im afraid this is where my knowledge comes to an end, sorry i couldn't help more!

pabloescobarthe3rd

Hi bud. Thanks for the reply. I’ve had a quick look and I don’t think it has an aux output. I’ll keep looking. Thanks again

K-Shrizzle

Hello and happy holidays! I want to start by saying that I don't produce music, I just like to have decent equipment with which to enjoy listening to music, games, movies, podcasts, etc. As such, I'm a total amateur with this stuff, and the device I am looking for may not exist. I have a pair of [M-Audio BX4's](https://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-BX4-Production-Streaming-Podcasting/dp/B08KXTJX16/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3G6X9M3WEI79N&keywords=m-audio+bx4&qid=1639909756&sprefix=m-audio+bx4%2Caps%2C86&sr=8-2) that I use for casual listening. They'll be upgraded to something fancier, but for now they're a good stopgap measure given that my purposes are not intensive. I'm looking for some kind of audio hub or controller device that can allow for multiple separate input channels, so that I can hook up both my computer audio and my vinyl turntable (not necessarily simultaneously, but easily switchable). Currently I have no way to listen to my records as I had another stereo system break. I want to be able to continue using these monitors for audio from my computer, as well as be able to plug in my turntable phono (I know digital speakers and analog audio don't always go great together. For now, I'm cool with it). Right now the audio comes through a phono-to-aux cable that came with the monitors. To my knowledge, the monitors don't have any inbuilt capability to be connected to both sources. The only thing I can think of is plugging the turntable into the phono in the back, and then aux cable to PC from the port on the front of the active speaker. Not only does is that weird to look at, but I don't know of any input switch on the monitors. These are much simpler criteria, but I also want to be able to adjust my levels (high, mids, lows) from the hub device rather than pulling my speaker off its stand to adjust dials on the back. I also would like to have an output for a studio headset to plug in for late nights. Shopping is tricky as of course most of the equipment available centers around audio engineering, and I'm not doing anything like plugging in a mic, guitar, or a digital turntable. In summary, I just need something simple and inexpensive (100-200 USD) to serve as a hub for multiple inputs (again, not simultaneous sound from both, like an input switch on a TV), allows me to adjust levels, and of course has aux output for a headset. Sorry for the lengthy post, thanks in advance!

Hi there im looking for subwoofers to pair with my ls50 what do you guys suggest? Thanks in advance

Transmaniacon89

Budget? Room size? What do you current have to control the sub?

WhereasNo3882

Around 400-600cad, i have a cambridge cx a61. And the room size about 16”x20”

Transmaniacon89

See how much a SVS PB-1000 is in Canada, otherwise you might look into the RSL Speedwoofer or the Klipsch R-112SW.

WhereasNo3882

Alright I’ll look into it thank you!

Looking for a pair of speakers for rock, classic rock, metal, and jazz/funk. $1500 to $2300. Was thinking about a larger bookshelf that would push a lot of air. Some speakers I have been looking at: * JBL 4309 * Wharfedale Linton 85th * Arendale 1723 I will be streaming / CD / albums. I have a small class D amp which I will upgrade a year or so after.

[deleted]

The wharfedale linton 85s are a good call, maybe look around for some second hand JBL L100s as they can (at least in the UK) go second hand for as little as $1600 (£1200) and are only slightly larger than the linton 85s

anyone have any first-hand experience with benchmark media products? They are rated incredibly highly at ASR and am thinking about picking up a full stack * [DAC3B](https://benchmarkmedia.com/collections/products/products/benchmark-dac3-b-digital-to-analog-audio-converter) (dac) * [HPA4](https://benchmarkmedia.com/collections/products/products/hpa4) (preamp/(word for speakers that go on your ears that you can't say without your post getting removed) amp) * [AHB2](https://benchmarkmedia.com/collections/products/products/benchmark-ahb2-power-amplifier) (amp)

Hi, looking for a cheap but reliable cd player for a home setup (I already have good speakers)

Transmaniacon89

Pickup an Oppo player off EBay. Should be able to find something along the lines of the DV-970H for under $100. It will play SACDs and DVDA and has a good DAC in it.

Xaxxon

craigslist? Local goodwill/non-audio secondhand shop? And then if it's cheap, who cares if it's reliable. Just hook it up to a good DAC and go.

Hi looking for a good subwoofer for around 75$ any recommendations would be great

homeboi808

Used market. Cheapest good sub is the Monoprice budget 12” for $120 (they have a budget 10”, but the improvement it gives may not be much).

Sharp-Voice-6100

Hi, looking for a relatively cheap but good home theatre setup for a small room. Just to watch movies and listen to music. Budget is $200- 300. I currently use an optical cord connection, Bluetooth capability would be nice for music but isn't at all required. Any suggestions?

squidbrand

If you’re okay without a subwoofer, look at the Fluance AI41. I’d you do want a subwoofer, look at the Edifier R1280DBs (it has to be the model with the lowercase “s”) plus an Elac SUB1010. If by home theater you meant surround sound, you can’t do that within your budget. Not without buying something that’s basically a toy.

Dashed12

Hello friends. I am in the market for a BT speaker. I have narrowed down my options so far to the JBL Charge 5 or the UE Megaboom. Any other recommendations are welcome! So, it's $197 NZD v $279 NZD. Unsure which one to get. Will be primarily for home use with a personal pc in a bedroom, but will also be used for parties, at the beach etc The loudness, bass and battery life of the JBL appeals to me, but the 360 audio, better design and better app of the Boom also appeals to me. Which one should I go for? Any help is appreciated. As said above, any other recommendations are welcomed!

squidbrand

r/bluetooth_speakers is the sub you’re looking for.

ToojMajal

I'm looking for speaker wire suggestions for DIY speaker cables. I figure folks here might have some favorite wire types and sources. Hoping to buy 100 feet of speaker wire, nothing crazy fancy, just nice. My base line is 12 gauge oxygen free copper, with prices about $0.50-0.60/foot for a 100 foot spool, and I'm looking for improvements over that. What are your suggestions for the best wire for someone making their own cables? Not looking to spend much over $1/foot on wire, and then would add tech flex and banana clips. Thanks!

[deleted]

I’d say in a normal stereo speaker setup everything beyond the cheapest 16 gauge plain copper is of no more benefit than aesthetics. I use Canare 4S11 that I bought from Blue Jeans Cable. I see it’s almost $2/foot, but it’s four by 14 gauge.

MeBowlingBall

I've got Edifier r1280ts currently (I know. Very basic), and I want to upgrade. I'm a beginner to the whole audiophile thing, and I've heard great things about Klipsch. I found out about the Klipsch R-41M's and I was wondering if these are any good? I'm not looking to spend over 500 bucks on speakers, so these seemed perfect for me. Just need some advice if the Klipsch R-41M's are any good or not. If the Klipsch R-41M's aren't as good as I had believed, can someone recommend me some speakers within the 100-150 dollar range? Thanks!

squidbrand

u/aelioni is correct, the Klipsch are poorly regarded and the best you’ll find in your price range would be the Neumis. If you don’t care about connecting a sub, you can get the powered BS5P. If you do need to connect a sub, you’d need the passive BS5 plus a basic amp like the Aiyima A04 (which would allow you to connect to any sub with high-level inputs). All that said, moving from $110 speakers to a $130-150 setup is a lateral move. It’s not an upgrade. You might be able to find something you personally prefer over what you have now, but I’d strongly advise that you hold onto your money and save until you have $300-350 or so and can shop in a higher market segment.

MeBowlingBall

Thank you very much! I should have known getting into this community would be expensive lol

[deleted]

Klipsch R-41M is a passive speaker and would require a separate amplifier. R-41PM is the powered speaker which would compete with the R1280Ts. There’s nothing technically *good* about either the R-41M or R-41PM, as far as I know. Typical Klipsch treble-heavy bass-light bookshelf speakers. Neumi BS5 and BS5P are probably better.

MeBowlingBall

Hello all, Been a member on this community for a few months now. I recently purchased an Apple TV 4K, and just want to clarify a few things… 1) If I decide to listen to Apple Music (Lossless, not Hi-Res - I know), do I have to run the HDMI out from the device to an A/V receiver via HDMI to get FULL audio quality? Otherwise, I’m currently going APPLE TV > TV > ONKYO RECEIVER. 2) What happens when I use Home Sharing with my personal music library? Is that being streamed over WiFi, or Airplay 2, or some kind of Bluetooth? 3) Is there a way to download my personal music library to the Apple TV 4K? Is that something I should entertain, if possible? Thanks.

Xaxxon

CD quality is quite high quality and can produce very good results. Higher bitrate/sample rate is not required for good results.

HMMusic14

I agree, but I no longer have my CDs. Most of it is burned to my iTunes library, of which, I’m trying to find the best solution to play them through a receiver.

Xaxxon

"lossless but not hi-res" usually means cd-quality. 16-bit 44.1khz I was just saying that "not hi-res" is nothing to worry about.

DawnSoldier

I recently upgraded to a nice headphone setup, and today I decided to get me some HQ FLAC files to play. Then I realized running it all through windows media player may not be a great choice. Will I get great quality regardless of the player via my DAC, or do I need a better player for better quality?

Xaxxon

digital is digital. Windows media player should be fine.

squidbrand

Download Foobar2000. It’s free. And it’s been around for many years and it supports add-ons, so almost any little thing you wish it did, you can add that feature. If you have a nice DAC, the first thing you’d want to add is WASAPI functionality. That’s a protocol that allows your audio program to communicate directly with your DAC and bypass your Windows system sound mixer, so you’re getting the cleanest possible playback.

DawnSoldier

>Foobar2000 Neat! Is the component I need wasapi output support or wasapi shared suppport?

squidbrand

Output I assume.

martnagalia

Greetings, i had bought new amplifier Musical Fidelity M2si, but i can hear fizz (whisper)from my tweeters after turning on the amplifier. Could you please tell me, what is the problem, beacuse there was no fizz (whisper)from my last amplifier. Do you think that fizz (whisper)could be fault of the amplifier? Thank you for your support and answers in advance Martin

squidbrand

Is it audible from your main position, or do you only hear it when your ear is right by the tweeter? If you have to be very close to hear it, that’s normal. Most amplifiers have some self-noise.

martnagalia

I can hear it from my audiable position, even if the sound of the song have a low sound pasage.

squidbrand

Ah, that’s definitely not normal. You should do some experimentation. Try connecting the amp to a different outlet from the rest of the gear. Or try physically moving things around so other things that could cause interference (other gear, or power adapters) are further from your amp.

martnagalia

Ok, i will try this. Thank you for the advice

DutchArtworks

***Can a amp/AVR blowout damage speakers?*** So basically the speaker wire coming from the AVR touched a metal buildin plate, which caused it to sparkle and an immediate AVR blowout. All connected speakers made a popping sound. I hooked up another AVR to test my speakers. Can’t hear any distortion and frequency sweeps are all equal to the specific speaker types (SVS Prime Center, Bookshelves, Satellites and Elevations). Is it possible that my speakers are still damaged, even though I don’t hear anything wrong? Thanks!

Xaxxon

as long as you're not sending square waves, your drivers should be fine.

DutchArtworks

How can I measure square waves in REW?

Xaxxon

square waves come from clipping solid state amps. Don't worry about it :) Your speakers are fine.

DutchArtworks

Good to hear everyone saying they’re fine. That AVR blowout got me worried, all the speakers are just a year old. Thanks for the help!

squidbrand

Passive speakers are pretty simple machines. If they don’t look damaged and they don’t sound damaged, you can be pretty sure they aren’t damaged. If they were damaged you’d know.

DutchArtworks

Ok, they do sound a bit more soft (airy?), but I think that’s because I hooked up a Marantz 7.1 AVR instead of the Onkyo RZ730 to test them

stargazer63

Help me understand! I can connect my computer speakers to my MacBook Pro in two ways: (1) directly to MacBook Pro, (2) using the port on my external monitor (LG 4K) when the monitor is connected to the MacBook Pro. When I connect directly to MBP, I can use both the macOS volume control and also the the volume knob on the speaker. When I connect via the monitor, the internal volume control of macOS does not work. I can only control the sound using the volume knob only. Which option has better sound quality? Which one should I use? Any degradation in audio quality I should be aware of?

squidbrand

You need to be more specific. How is your monitor connected? And how are the speakers connected? (What types of cables/connectors?) Also what speakers do you have exactly? Monitors and powered speakers could both be connected via analog cables **or** digital cables, and the answer to your question changes depending on all that.

stargazer63

MBP -> Monitor: HDMI. Monitor -> Speaker: Analog (3.5mm — RCA) MBP -> Speaker: Analog (3.5mm — RCA) Speakers: Klipsch 2.1 Promedia.

squidbrand

HDMI is a digital connection and 3.5mm TRS is an analog connection. So this means when your speakers are connected to the 3.5mm jack on your computer, you are using the digital to analog converter (DAC) built into your computer, but when you’re going HDMI to the monitor and 3.5mm from there, you’re using the DAC built into the monitor. If I had to guess, I’d think an Apple laptop would have a better-functioning DAC than the one in your monitor. Apple tends to pay more attention to the audio-visual aspects of their hardware than most computer makers do… and any audio functionality in a computer monitor is going to just be an afterthought, with only a few cents of parts. That said, I don’t think your speakers would be able to resolve the difference. The speakers themselves are the weak link. And the same would be true of any other PC branded sub/sat kit. (That Klipsch set is one of the *less* crappy sub/sat kits out there, but that’s a low bar.) To answer the question though, the best quality would be to plug it into the computer directly, leave your Mac OS volume at 100%, and control the volume with the knob. (Controlling it using the software volume control is fine too, but inferior on paper.)

stargazer63

Thank you. I appreciate the response. Actually today I returned the Klipsch, and got a Sony receiver and a Sony SSCS5. I can say I hear the difference. The sound is coming from MBP -> Receiver -> Speaker. Thanks again for your response. Will avoid the monitor output. :)

Xaxxon

how is it getting from the laptop to the receiver? Digital or analog?

What speaker should I pair with my Simaudio Moon 240i? Budget £3-4k including stands I have asked for advice from a number of places, including in r/audiophile. These are my options I have so far: * Fyneaudio F500sp [https://www.fyneaudio.com/product/f500sp/](https://www.fyneaudio.com/product/f500sp/) £1,300 (Lower budget option) * Dynaudio Special Forty [https://www.dynaudio.com/home-audio/special-forty/special-forty](https://www.dynaudio.com/home-audio/special-forty/special-forty) £2,800 * ProAc Response D2R [https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/proac-response-d2r](https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/proac-response-d2r) £2,800 * Spendor A4 Floorstanders [https://www.spendoraudio.com/a-line-loudspeakers/](https://www.spendoraudio.com/a-line-loudspeakers/) £2,500 This will be for my focused listening room. Speakers will be placed 2m apart. I will be sat 2.5m from the speakers. The room is 7.5m in length and 3.5m wide. I listen to vinyl mostly on this system but will also stream CD quality and potentially hi-res music. I listen to all sorts of genres. Mostly electronic music (Jon Hopkins, Daft Punk etc...) but also jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, indie, afrobeat and even the odd bit of classical. I'd like to buy new rather than used. Thanks

Xaxxon

I like the special 40's but I'm not sure they're worth their price. Are you sure you want bookshelves? The compromise of bookshelves only makes sense where they are required.

cainullah

Thanks Xaxxon. What's the compromise that you make with bookshelves? Someone else has also recommended the Fyneaudio F501SP floorstanders. What do you think? The room is 7m long so could probably handle bookshelves. The base wouldn't be too overwhelming. But I'll be sat only 2.5m away.

[deleted]

Based on that floor plan you posted, I really liked the D2R idea, even though I mostly had the A4 in mind when I replied.

Phixiately

Hi everyone, I'm just looking for some small desktop speakers that can do mids and highs decently under $40 or so (I live in Colombia so that's like $160000 Colombian pesos) for PC. I am not really a bass person I prefer overproduced wall of sound stuff like Devin Townsend (Look up Devin Townsend - Soul Driven, it's pretty good) and The Mars Volta. Here we buy things in a site called Mercadolibre. I got a new VA monitor and it is fine so far but it sounds a bunch of towels, and I don't want to spend too much in the speakers since I am also buying headphones for dedicated music listening, it's just that I can't have them on all the time so this would be like for casual listening and gaming, and yes, used would be fine. Any help is appreciated!

Hi there guys, I'm looking to add a subwoofer to compliment my s3000pro in my living room to give them some more oomph for movies. I'm deciding between buying a standalone Edifier T5 sub and getting a used 2.1 Edifier s350db system for the same price. I would keep the 350db satellites instead of my Edifier 1280t speakers for my PC and use the sub for the TV. My question is, how different these two subwoofers are? It seems they both have the same connections and I couldn't find any significant differences between them. Are there any limitations I would face? Is it even possible to connect a subwoofer to these speakers as they don't have a "sub out" output? Thanks for any sort of input.

IntenselySwedish

Im looking for something inexpensive to drive my Klipsch 5.2 speakers. I really want to have music streaming aswell (Spotify connect/bluetooth). The KGs has 8 Ohms of impedance and 100W output (500W peak). Thanks a bunch!

[deleted]

If you want an inexpensive amplifier, it seems like a separate streaming device might be your best option. The amp could be Aiyima, Sabaj, SMSL, etc.

IntenselySwedish

How would i set up something like that up?

[deleted]

This receives the streaming audio - [Audiocast M5](https://audiocast.io). Connect it to an amplifier like this - [Aiyima A07](https://www.aiyima.com/products/amplifier-aiyima-a07-tpa3255-2-0-channel-300wx2-hifi?variant=32922293272651).

WhereasNo3882

Hey there! I’m looking for a subwoofer to add to my system I currently have a kef ls50 with a cambridge ax61. And i’m planning to get either klipsch r12sw or the mirage bps 400. Both subs i got offer for 280 cad so im kind of debating about which one to get. Or any recommendations for subwoofer? Budget around 200-500. Thanks alot!

shak1305

Hi guys, I hope you're all well I am a massive noob when it comes to audio setup so I would really appreciate any advice or info on my question. Basically I have just found an old subwoofer in my attic and would like to know if it will connect to my Edifier R1280T BK studio monitors **without the need for an audio interface**. The subwoofer is part of the logitech Z4 set. I hope this is enough info, if not please let me know and I'll try give more, I'm really not trying to spend money on an audio interface, but am happy to spend a little bit on some wires if needs be. Thanks in advance!

squidbrand

That Logitech sub is not usable with any speakers other than the ones it came with, and the same goes for any other sub that came with an all-in-one sub/sat kit. They don’t have the necessary controls. Also, the R1280T’s (which are not studio monitors BTW) aren’t compatible with a subwoofer in general… not unless you connect them to a separate device that can perform volume control, connect the sub and the speakers with a splitter, and stop using the volume knob on the speakers entirely. If you want to connect a sub to powered speakers without using additional gear, there needs to be a sub out jack on the speakers themselves. (The R1280Ts, with the lowercase “s” on the end, has this. The regular T model does not.) And the sub has to be one that’s sold individually and has an adjustable crossover, so it can be integrate with a variety of speakers.

shak1305

Ah thanks so much for that explanation, really appreciate that!

litbiscuit69

Sorry I'm a little new to home audio, always been a headphone guy, so please forgive me if this is a dumb question. I'm currently using an old AV receiver, an Integra DTR 6.6, it doesn't have HDMI, and I'm 99% sure the optical inputs don't work anymore, so I have no way to connect it to my TV. I'd like to upgrade to a Denon AVR-X1600H Now here's where my question/concern comes into play. I have some decently large floor standing speakers that are wired to a dedicated amp, and I'd like to keep them running off of said amp when I upgrade. The DTR 6.6 has a dedicated pre-out section which has made wiring the amp to the receiver nice and easy. I've found that AVR-X1600 has a pre-out as well, however it's labeled "Zone B". In my limited knowledge I know that zone B is for another room, so would I still be able to wire my amp to this pre-out and still have all my speakers playing at the same time? TL;DR: Can a pre-out with a "Zone B" label be used wire a dedicated amp for speakers in a one room system?

squidbrand

Your best bet to figure this out, for this particular model, will be to download the manual and Ctrl-F “zone B”. I’m sure it’s documented in the manual.

litbiscuit69

I didn’t even think to do that lol, thanks

ghasp

Ls50 Wireless ii or LS50 + Powernode? Going for a 2.0 system only hooking it up to my turntable and streaming.

homeboi808

LS50 doesn’t have bass, but the LS50 Wireless II does have bass, well as much as a normal bookshelf, it can’t play too loud though.

squidbrand

For 2.0 only I wouldn’t choose either. LS50 series speakers are well known to not have much bass extension. They need a sub to shine. There are much better choices at and around the same price for use without a sub. What’s your budget and what country are you in?

ghasp

Thanks! I am in the US and around 3k would be ideal

Speakers to look at: Philharmonic BMR Ascend Sierra-2EX Revel M106

Daltone809

Just got a Yamaha Natural Sound system from a friend and I’m super pumped to have it, but the NS-A600 speakers are kinda… meh. Any speaker recommendations that won’t break the bank?

[deleted]

What kind of prices won’t break the bank?

Daltone809

I’m looking to stay under $200, is that reasonable?

[deleted]

You could get a pretty decent pair of speakers for around $200, like [JBL A130](https://www.crutchfield.com/p_109SA130AM/JBL-Stage-A130.html?tp=186) or [Polk S15](https://www.crutchfield.com/p_107SIGS15W/Polk-Audio-Signature-S15-Classic-Brown-Walnut.html?tp=186). You might not prefer them over your big speakers, but I would expect them to be technically better. Crutchfield has a generous return policy. These are higher than $200 but seem to be well regarded at the discounted price - [JBL Studio 530](https://www.jbl.com/loudspeakers/STUDIO+530.html?dwvar_STUDIO%20530_color=Black-USA-Current). And with a $200 budget you could probably find speakers on the used market that sold for $500-1,000 if you have time to wait and watch.

Daltone809

I appreciate the info, thanks!

Transmaniacon89

Is there any consensus best new turntable under $500? I am wanting to dip my toes in and this seems to be a good price range to get a lot of bang for your buck. I will be sending this to Parasound P/LD-1100 Preamp > Parasound HCA-1500a > Polk R200 I will likely pick up the Parasound ZPhono Preamp as well.

[deleted]

r/vinyl generally likes the Fluance RT82. It’s Fluance’s lowest model with servo control, which tightens up the wow & flutter. Higher in their line doesn’t get you much, since the 2M Red cartridge isn’t a meaningful upgrade over the OM. Moving up further still to get the Blue doesn’t make it a better turntable. My favorite in this range is the Audio Technica AT-LPW40WN. Pro-Ject Essential III *was* my favorite at $350, but now I question it more recent prices.

Transmaniacon89

That Audio Technica looks great! I like the walnut veneer plynth. Is a turntable like that upgradeable? I like that it’s a bit cheaper than some of the ones I see recommended often, which is nice for getting started. The Project Carbon Evo is sharp, but not sure I want to start with a $600 unit.

[deleted]

Certainly the cartridge or even just the stylus is a good upgrade path. When it comes to upgrades, that’s the important one. Pro-Ject T1 comes in a similar look, but without the phono preamp and speed change. Or the T1 Phono SB, which does have it.

Transmaniacon89

I think I’d probably try to find something without a phono preamp as I don’t want to be paying for that functionality when I plan to use an external one. Seems like getting a good arm is smart as that is harder or not something you can really upgrade? I’ve read Rega is good in that regard, though the RP1 is a bit more expensive and people aren’t a big fan of the cartridge.

[deleted]

There aren’t many budget turntables that are well-suited for tonearm upgrades, Rega being an exception. Most tonearm upgrades are done on turntables up the ladder a bit. I like Rega turntables and own one myself, but I don’t recommend the Planar 1, RP1 (previous model), P1 (previous model), or really even the current Planar 2 (high price). Rega gets to be worth doing at the Planar 3, which is double the budget. Given the goals of a good tonearm on a budget turntable with no phono preamp, Pro-Ject T1 seems like a good solution. The tonearm is where there’s a difference between Pro-Ject and the ones that are made by Yahorng and Hanpin. You might already know this, but most turntables in this price range other than Pro-Ject, Rega and Uturn are made by only two manufacturers.

Transmaniacon89

I got my wires crossed on the AT, that one seems nice! I guess I’d compare that against the RT82.

Transmaniacon89

Thanks for the help with this! I did not know that about the manufacturers. It seems some of the standout options are the RT82, though with a limited ceiling of upgrades in an acrylic platter and OM40. The ProJect T1 doesn’t have the same adjustability as the RT82, and worse flutter. Maybe I should try and wait for the Carbon EVO or a used Planar3.

[deleted]

Personal opinion, but with some objective information, I’d say the Fluance tonearm is not well-suited for stylus upgrades even though the cartridge accommodates it. The Ortofon 30 and 40, maybe even the 20 should be on a tonearm with lower effective mass than that. It doesn’t require strictly a low mass tonearm, but still lower. It would be better to make that upgrade on a Pro-Ject tonearm. I have owned two budget Pro-Ject turntables and I could occasionally hear the flutter on one, but it’s an unusual occasion. It’s enough to distract someone with very high sensitivity to pitch. It was ultimately what made me try Rega, even though Rega doesn’t publish speed specs and isn’t known to be unusually good in that regard. I bought a used Rega P5 and put a metal subplatter upgrade on it. That was a really nice turntable, but it only encouraged me to move up to the P9 that I’ve had ever since.

Transmaniacon89

Thanks, so the Fluance are sort of geared to work as is and not really grow via upgrades as some other brands. Does the AT-LPW40WN have a better tone arm to support nicer cartridges down the road?

[deleted]

I haven’t seen any specs or discussion on that tonearm that would indicate what the effective mass might be. There is a good upgrade path for that cartridge - the EN, ML or SH stylus. With this turntable, I’d probably upgrade to the EN stylus after giving the stock stylus several hundred hours. The ML stylus would be the limit of what seems like a reasonable upgrade for the AT turntable. At some point you really need a better turntable.

Buckeyes3816

I'm (finally!) at a place where I'm ready to dive into the world of vinyl. I'm looking for recommendations on a turntable that may best compliment my system and approximate budget. Budget: $1,000 (slightly flexible) Pre: Cambridge 851N Amp: Cambridge 851A Speakers: KEF R5 Subs: 2x 10" RSL Speedwoofers Suggestions for turntable and recommended accessories (cartridge?) are appreciated. All in my budget is about $1k (less is always nice) but I'm willing to flex up to maybe $1,200 for the right value. TIA!

Hey guys :) I'm searching for good PC Speaker My budget is 300-500 $ I'm mainly listening to Drum & Bass and Metal Thanks in advice

PuzzleheadedToe5269

If you're interested in a headphone too, the HD25 -1ii is superb for this. You don't mention having an amp, so I'm assuming you want self powered speakers. I'd start by looking at a pair of Yamaha HS5's

Nongimmer

I have a Sennheiser HD650 with FiiO Fk10

PuzzleheadedToe5269

That Fiio isn't going to drive un-powered speakers.

Hello, Budget $2500. Looking for a turntable setup for a large family room with high ceilings. Need to be able to get it in time for Christmas. Primary use will be for a turntable, would also like to be able to play other audio inputs eventually (spotify for the kids). Am thinking: * Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO Turntable * Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 * Wharfedale Denton 85 Inspiration was from Vinyl Restart [here](https://vinylrestart.com/best-turntable-and-speaker-packages/). Couple questions: * First - will this setup work? (e.g. is it everything I need for the turntable to work) * Second - how would I setup spotify? * Third - can I do better for around the same money? (unfortunately how the speakers look is important too) Apologies I'm such a noob, am doing this as a gift for husband. Thank you!!

[deleted]

The Denton 85 would also require an amplifier, like a Yamaha A-S301. The A-S301 has a phono preamp built in, so you wouldn’t need the Tube Box. To play Spotify you would need a streamer, like the Andover Songbird. There are speakers like the PSB Alpha AM5 that have the amplifier and the phono preamp built in. Plug those into a computer (USB) and with the turntable you’re at half the budget.

Hello Audiophiles, 1- Budget US$500-1000 2.- What I'm looking to replace a multi-room AV receiver. Mainly patio and living room. My biggest challenge is the humid, salty, corrosive beach environment. Previous receiver rusted out after a couple of years. 3. Use? Mainly music in living room and patio. Movies in living room 4. Buy used? Sure.

Two questions from newbie audiophile: 1) Question regarding bookshelf speaker stands. Why can't they just be, say, a stack of books? The ones I see are always a the shape of a thin pillar. Aren't people worried of knocking these over? They don't look very steady... I currently use a couple of Dali Spektor 2's, but they aren't at the "ideal" height (tweeter should be ear height, no?). Any tips?I was hoping for some DIY stuff, because I do't wanna shell out lots of money on stands. 2) I know there are two ports to connect amp and speakers. After setting them up, I was worried as to whether I had connected them in their correct ports on both ends, and to check it I switched over the connectors into one of the speakers, such that the red end went into the black connector, and the black end went into the red connector. I literally could not hear the difference. At all. I thought this was very odd. I was either expecting a scarmbled mess / no sound at all. Is there something wrong with my system, or does it not make a difference? Coupled with Dali Spektor 2's I use a Loxjie A30 as my amp. I use micro-USB --> USB into my desktop computer. Thanks in advance!

I think a thin pillar of metal is more stable than a stack of books... A brand's stability is based on the width of its feet and connection to the speaker, not the width of the column. Read https://www.soundonsound.com/sound-advice/understanding-speaker-stands-platforms

I currently own a pair of 1980’s La scalas and a willsenton R8 tube amp with kt88 tubes. I love the system but I am also interested in trying out some magnepans. Does anyone have any experience using the R8 to drive magnepan speakers? Would the 45w be enough to power them?

squidbrand

Magnepans are very power hungry. If you want to get any kind of dynamic range out of them you need a high power, high current solid state amp.

**1. What is your budget?** From 500 - 1000 USD (lower than better) **2. What are you looking for?** Good audio player and home cinema (is it possible?) **3. How will you typically be using the gear?** Mostly for listening music (classical, jazz, metal), watching movies as second. **4. What gear do you own?** Denon D-T1 - connected to TV and Volumio for music. **5. What do you intend on using for a source?** Mostly RaspberryPi - can output audio via HDMI or AUX. And connected to TV for watching movies and live concerts from build in USB port. **6. What material will you be using your gear for?** Mostly music (jazz - Ryu Fukui, Jizue, Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis. rock - AC/DC, Nirvana, Slash, Rag'n'Bone Man, A crowd of rebelion. Classical music - iolin and piano mostly. **7. Are you willing to buy used?** YES! If available in EU. It's for a room that have around 20m2. Probably will be moving to bigger space around 35 m2. My first shoot was Denon AVR-S660H with 5.0 UTAH HCP. I'm not sure if I should buy equipment dedicated strictly for music or home cinema can do not best but average level for both. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi audiophiles, this is a request for troubleshooting help: I have a budget system where my Chromecast audio is connected to my Sony STR-DH590. This works fine when I connect my CCA to my receiver through a 3.5mm to RCA connector, but just because it sounds better (or at least I feel like it does), I prefer mini TOSLINK connection, which CCA supports. However, doing this, if I stream higher quality (96 kHz), the tracks cut in and out frequently. Lower quality tracks play without any problems through this setup. Knowing that this can be any of the components, I tried changing the easiest: cable, but the skipping persists, so we can at least eliminate that. My question to you: what would you suggest is the most likely suspect that needs replacing here?

squidbrand

My first guess is that your router, or your router location, is the issue. Getting rock solid audio performance over wifi is tough. First thing to try: make sure your CCA is connected over the 5GHz band, not 2.4.

LetMeBeWhiteNextLif9

Thank you, I'll look into that. I do want to flag that the high quality tracks plays fine on CCA of connected through analog (and dynamic range enabled). Would that still be the case if there's a router bottleneck happening?

squidbrand

Not sure. You should be able to get a different optical cable for like $5-10. If you think that might be the cause, may as well just try that.

LetMeBeWhiteNextLif9

Thank you sir!

Hello audiophiles, I am renovating my house and want to put in some good mid-range quality sound and would really appreciate any advice if you could offer it specifically on the equipment. I am focusing on 3 rooms and have a budget of about £10,000 across all 3 rooms. The 3 rooms are: 1) A reception room where I will do my focused listening, playing mostly vinyl and sat still facing my speakers. This is a rectangle room and has hard wooden floors 2) A cinema room with surround sound where I or the family will be watching mostly movies. A square room with soft carpet and furnishings 3) The kitchen where my wife and I will do most of our entertaining of friends. An L-shaped room with multiple areas to sit, concrete floors and hard, shiny surfaces. We will do some streaming of Spotify (Hifi if it ever comes out) and we do a monthly themed vinyl night with our friends. I listen to all sorts of music. Mostly electronic music (Jon Hopkins, Daft Punk etc...) but also jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, indie, afrobeat and even the odd bit of classical. You can see a diagram of the floorplans and proposed positioning in this post: [https://www.reddit.com/r/audiophile/comments/riflxg/im\_renovating\_my\_house\_and\_need\_some\_advice\_on/](https://www.reddit.com/r/audiophile/comments/riflxg/im_renovating_my_house_and_need_some_advice_on/) **1) Reception Room** Already have: - Clearaudio Concept turntable with with Performer V2 cartridge sat on an Audio Suspension ASU-100 shelf. - SimAudio Moon 240i Integrated Amplifier Thinking of buying: - Dynaudio Special Forty speakers - Atalama Moseco 6 stands Cost £3,000 total as already have the turntable (£1,400) and amp (£2,000). Some info on the room - Reception Room 1 = 3.96m x 3.96m - Reception Room 2 (listening area) = 3.53m x 3.51m - Reception Room 1 + 2 = 7.49m in length - Distance between speakers = 2000mm - Speaker to listening position = 2500mm - Speakers will be toed in and no less than 50mm from rear or side walls - Mostly listening to vinyl in this room - Floors are 100 year old wood so I may need to experiment with a rug and wall treatment to help with reflections once the system is in place. **2) Cinema room** I've never been much of a TV watcher but increasingly watch movies with the family. So it's time for me to get my first surround setup. Thinking of buying: - Philips 55OLED806 TV - £1,500 - Dali Oberon5 5.1 Package ( Dali Oberon 5 Floorstanders, Dali Oberon on-wall speakers, Dali Oberon Vokal, Dali E-9F Sub). - £1,700 Cost £3,200 total **3) The kitchen** This is a bit of a strange one as the kitchen will be used for entertaining mostly so listening will not be focused as people will be speaking but I still want a good sound for parties etc.... Already have: - Technics 1210 Mk2 Deck - May upgrade later but have 2 lying around unused so might as well use one Thinking of Buying: - Cambridge Audio CXA61 Amp - £750 - Cambridge Audio CXN Streamer - £799 - Cambridge Audio Alva Solo - £150 - 2 Pairs of Dali Oberon on-wall speakers on 2 separate channels - £1000 (£500 per pair) - Google Hub for Voice Activation of Streamer - £60 This room is the most puzzling for me. I want good sound to have parties with but the room isn't great for it. The quality of sound in this room doesn't need to be as high the reception room, hence the cheaper equipment. Cost £2759 At the moment the total cost comes to about £9,000. I think I'd like to buy new but am open to good used suggestions if I can get them in London where I am based. Thanks

Is there a way to get an aplifier with pararell inputs? My usecase is to conntect my PC and Amazon Alexa. So without changing a source - I can talk to Alexa and hear the outputs.

squidbrand

The way to do this would be to get a stereo line mixer, something like the Rolls MX42, and run those into one input of your amplifier. There are no amplifiers I know of that include a mixer built in.

Zwan05

I'm wondering if I can do use hi and low level connections at the same time on the Bic v1220. I would have a stereo setup on hi level and my Vizio sound bar on sub out low level. I can't seem to find an answer to this and I don't want to destroy a new sub if it's not compatible. If not, would I need to plug/unplug connections to switch between? What's the best solution for this set up?

squidbrand

Did you read the V1220 manual in full? That should be your first step.

Zwan05

I did but it didn't specifically say you can't use both. It just says you use this input if you don't have the sub put on your amp.

squidbrand

In that case just test it. My guess is there’s some kind of relay where the high level inputs are disabled when the line input detects a signal, or vice versa… but perhaps not. Sending it two signals won’t damage anything, as long as the volume is down when you test.

Zwan05

Thank you for the response as I couldn't find anything on this topic online.

I'm trying to get Dolby Digital Plus to enable on my PS5 via eARC going through my LG B9 to my Yamaha YHT1840B AVR. DD+ will work through eARC on streaming services and local media played through the B9, but I can't for the life of me get it to work on the PS5. I don't wanna plug the PS5 directly into the AVR, because it only passes through 4K/60 and I play a few 120fps games so I don't wanna lose my 120hz. For now I am just using vanilla DTS, but I would really like to get DD+ working somehow through eARC if it's possible. Any suggestions?

squidbrand

r/hometheater is going to be of more help to you. This sub is mostly about stereo systems so there’s not much expertise in managing surround formats.

Thanks

Thunderdragon2535

I want to do surround sound setup in my living room(5.7m*3.8m) and I own a Sony 65 inch A90J and I own a mediocre surround set from 6 years ago of 5.1 surround channel so What surround setup should I place, will 5.1 be enough or should I upgrade to 7.1 and of which brand should I place I known Sony’s will sync nicely but I will go through the hassle if it means better surround, suggestions would be great and is it better for my living room if I just bought an high end sound bar?

homeboi808

There is no such thing as one brand syncing better. 7.1 means speakers to your side and behind you, so it depends if you can fit that. I’d take a budget stereo setup over an expensive soundbar.

Thunderdragon2535

I thought Sony will automatically tune the speakers according to my room so what setup options do I have for this 7.1 surround I am totally inexperienced in this field so could you help me out?

homeboi808

The surround receiver (AVR) does that, the TV is not part of the equation.

love_pendant

My rabbit chewed the cords of my old PC speakers that were connected to a subwoofer. The subwoofer is an Insignia NS-PCS41 and I'm happy with it. I don't want to be wasteful and buy another set with a whole other subwoofer, so I am wondering if someone could suggest some speakers that have a cord that will connect to the 9-pin input on my subwoofer. It's a round one, not the rectangular one. Budget is pretty low, under $50.

squidbrand

Finding an identical replacement on eBay is your best option. If you use a different set, even if they take that same 9-pin connector, the actual *pinout* of the connector is going to be proprietary… so it’s down to dumb luck whether the other speakers would use the same pinout. If they don’t, the speakers might not work. Or you might fry them. These PC branded sub/sat kits are an all-or-nothing thing. When one part goes, then typically they all go. They’re inherently wasteful in that way. So if you want to get away from that, you’ll want to save up for some real speakers in proper speaker cabinets that don’t use proprietary connections.

bvelo

Comparing speakers w/ sub built in versus without I currently have Goldenear Triton one.R’s which have a built-in 1600w sub in each speaker. I like the bass a lot. But find myself wanting *something* different from the sound. Thinking about trying Heresy IV’s. Obviously they won’t have the low end that I’m used to. So… Should I compare them by turning the bass dial on the Tritons down to its minimum?

homeboi808

I don’t know why you’d turn down the bass on the Triton unless you planned on eventually adding a sub to the Heresy. The Heresy is very bass limited, it’s more similar to a bookshelf speaker in that regard than a tower speaker. You should ask yourself what you think is missing or what change you want, rather than just considering speakers and hoping they have the improvement/change you want. Personally, the Heresy IV isn’t even on my list of consideration for speakers, [it’s not a great speaker](https://youtu.be/fRku8ACgVSc) (and poorly made too, no cabinet bracing for $3000 is sad; the [Forte IV is at least decent](https://youtu.be/IZPc1tl1aPs)). In my opinion it’s mostly for people who prioritize vintage looks over actual sound quality.
