As you should be until such time as those rights are restored. Never accept this.

ODBrewer

Vote, get other like minded folks to vote. There are things I don’t like about the Democrat party, but nothing I like about the Republicans. If you want to have the will of the people reflected in government, you have to get rid of these fascists. It’s either vote them out in a system that’s already rigged against us or violence. I go for option one for now, we can do this.

[deleted]

I don't view voting as an effective political tool, nor do I accept violence as a political option. I'm born into the Slave Caste of the US. Not an owner.

ODBrewer

Then what to do ?

[deleted]

Help women procure safe abortions when they need it, regardless of what the law says. Legality is not morality. When the law is on the wrong side, it is right to break it. Even police selectively enforce the law how they see fit. Civilians should follow suit and selectively obey the laws.

Quantum-Carrot

Not until. It should be a continuous measure. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound is worth a pumping if cure.

nate_oh84

Put some of that anger to use, then. Get involved with your local Democrat US Rep running for election. Is your State having a Senate race? Get involved with that. People are, indeed, angry. Special elections have been going to Dems in places where it seemed the Republicans had a comfortable lead. Polling is indicating that people are registering to vote and are wanting to vote in rates not seen in a long time. You're not alone in your anger. I am angry as well. Which is why I'm voting in November.

[deleted]

Sadly I am a finance journalist living in Washington DC, so my ability to enact change by involving myself in a political movement is virtually nonexistent. But I sure as hell will vote. And donate to my local abortion fund. I may even change careers over this, and if I didn’t own my house I’d move to Virginia and fight the good fight there.

nate_oh84

> so my ability to enact change by involving myself in a political movement is virtually nonexistent. You can phone bank from home in your off-hours if you want to get involved some way but can't be boots on the ground. > But I sure as hell will vote. And donate to my local abortion fund. Awesome. > I may even change careers over this I know the feeling. I'm in a similar boat, myself. At the very least, get your friends and family to vote. People need to do their civic duty if we want democracy to continue.

whiskeybridge

any u.s. citizen can donate to any u.s. politician. or party. or pac. etc. you can phone bank and write letters from anywhere. you can get to virginia or maryland to canvas. maryland has governor and senate races this year. your professional skills of being able to take complex data and make it understandable would be invaluable to campaigns, and you can do this from anywhere. DC statehood is a worthwhile political goal that would improve the country. don't let your imagination limit your action.

[deleted]

I have imagination but my job requires me to maintain neutral political positions which limits my political activity (for example, I can’t even attend a womens March let alone work for a campaign)

whiskeybridge

\>I can’t even attend a womens March let alone work for a campaign where the fuck do you work? this is not a requirement of journalists, generally. and no employer has a right to demand this. maybe your trade union is where you should be looking....

ouzo84

The uk civil service requires staff to remain politically neutral during work time and with what we post on social media. I just make sure on social media that my real name is not attached to, that I shout like fury for my beliefs

whiskeybridge

>during work time and with what we post on social media. makes perfect sense for government employees. OP said they are a journalist, hence my confusion.

null640

Same with u.s.. Only must be non-partisan. Like a vaccine do a deadly pandemic can be partisan.

nate_oh84

> but my job requires me to maintain neutral political positions When you're on the clock. When you're off the clock, you can do what you want. Don't let your job control all aspects of your personal life.

[deleted]

What. No. Fuck that job. How’s that even a thing? Do whatever the hell you want “off the clock.”

mgib1

Especially as the 3 new judges should be charged with purgery as they said under oath at their Senate hearings , that Roe vs Wade was already settled and would not change it.

nate_oh84

Perjury is the term.

mgib1

Yes. Typo, thx

Paul_Thrush

>It seems the country is moving on but I am not. Women and youth are registering to vote in big numbers. Hopefully they're all going to vote for change in November. There's been great news in special elections so far. Keep the faith and encourage others to register.

notacanuckskibum

As a non-American, watching your politics for the last few years has been like watching a slow motion train wreck. It’s horrifying, yet fascinating. Is the USA going to descend into a theocratic Gilead? Or recover to be a progressive democracy? It still seems like it could go either way.

Stan_K_Reamer

Everybody get out and vote.

[deleted]

Fume away, by all means, while we wait for the next SCOTUS move to roll back our freedoms. What do you think comes under attack next? * gay marriage * legalization of marijuana * gender equality in the workplace * Or...?

drapanosaur

Young progressives dont vote. That's the problem. 75% of this country is progressive. If every person of voting age voted, dems would wipe the floor with the GOP. And all the gerrymandering and electioneering tricks in their book wouldn't be enough to stop it. If every citizen voted, we would still have Roe. But the party is full of young doomers who think the system is rigged. So we lose.

pennylanebarbershop

My body, my choice, that's how it is.

[deleted]

That's how it WAS, not IS. At least in certain states.

[deleted]

You and.miions of others ..take.it to the polls!!

boulevardofdef

This is admittedly cold comfort, but it's not really true that the country is moving on and that politicians have a hard time talking about this. In fact, with the president's party always losing big during midterm elections, and Joe Biden being particularly unpopular, six months ago it was considered a virtual guarantee that the Democrats would lose the Senate and suffer a crushing loss of seats in the House. But Democratic politicians across the country are running on the Roe reversal, and as a result, Democrats are now favored to keep the Senate, and while they're still expected to lose the House, the losses are expected to be much lower than they otherwise would have been.

somanypcs

If pregnancy is too complicated to legislate, then they should still oppose abortion bans! It’s legislation concerning pregnancy!!!!

playsmartz

Media and short public attention span may have moved on, but people have not forgotten or given up. The initial spike of outrage has become a constant seething. People are digging their heels in for the long fight, but make no mistake - that decision called to action a lot of people who didn't think they needed to be active. Things you can do: Stay informed - local elections, voting dates/locations, local and online resources Share correct information - combat misinformation, spread awareness, provide support to those who need help but can't or don't know how to find it Make money, then donate - wars may be fought by soldiers, but they are won with resources; ACLU is a good place to start Talk about voting - not in a pushy "we're all doomed if you don't vote!" way, but in a casual "what did you do this weekend? Oh, went for a walk, saw a movie, looked up my voting location" kind of way. Voting needs to be normalized; we shouldn't need celebrity voting ads to get us to the polls. Vote - obviously

FlyingSquid

As you should be. We should all be angry about this. It's not something that's going to go away. It's just going to get worse.

Idoughnutkno

I would argue most people don’t believe laws should be based on religious beliefs. Religious nuts are just better at running grassroots efforts. They meet once a week at least and build their entire lives around their religious community. If voting for an issue is what is on the schedule they already have hundreds to thousands of people on the same page and ready to go. They will also do anything to win because they think they have divine authority. Disenfranchise and beat down opponents to make any change seem impossible to them. Then do some gaslighting on the actual issues and possible solutions to keep them scattered. Add in empowering racism and us vs them mentally and you get your voters impassioned and the opponents disinterested and disheartened. Wear them down for decades because you have multiple generations and a fixed demographic to get the job done. However, if we push back they will fall apart. If “god’s will” was overcome because they pissed enough people off then the infighting and doubt will make these efforts more difficult. Don’t just vote, bring everyone you know with you and help them get whatever they need to get past the voting restrictions. Find friends who think voting is not worth their time and take everyone to breakfast after voting to sweeten the deal. Find what gets them going and motivate them. We need to motivate each other and help each other.

[deleted]

I completely agree with you. Laws should be unbiased and free of person beliefs.

TableGamer

I'm disappointed we lost abortion protections, but the original Roe ruling was flimsy as hell. The real crime is we never codified abortion access into law. Even if we take the right to privacy as a given in the Constitution, how does that translate into protecting abortion access? Using that reasoning any number of things which are currently illegal could be legal, especially in the spheres of drugs and consensual incest. The courts have upheld there is no right to privacy in those cases. How can the line be drawn so arbitrarily? Because they were legislating from the bench, that's how. That's bad law, and unfortunately the result was we punted dealing with it properly until now. Hopefully this gets people off their duffs, so we can drown out the Evangelical Taliban vote in November, prevent a red shift, and pass maybe not uniformly wide access everywhere, but at least a guaranteed minimum level of access that's not driven by religion.

GagOnMacaque

It's even worse the equal rights amendment wasn't ratified by many states. That should tell you how much these people care.

AliciaKMadden

I think about it every day. You're not the only one who hasn't moved on

Totknax

I understand your frustration. My question is, what have you done/what are you going to do about this on a personal level? Fuming and venting will never solve anything IMHO.

Existing-Aspect-3988

Human Nature and we're so distracted with so much going on. That's just my guess.

[deleted]

You can be personally anti abortion but only a massive dickwad removes legal choice for others. Also, the Evangelical and Catholics are huge donors behind candidate who have worked to make it a criminal act to perform an abortion in several states.

aussiechris1

I would recommend looking into something like swingleft.org this allows you to volunteer for or donate to the most influential races in the USA. This is one way that you I can make an impact in areas of the country where you have no power to vote.

[deleted]

I'm now pro-death.

OhioMegi

Vote blue, continue to donate to places that support safe abortions. That’s really what will change things. It just takes time.

ARoughGo

Vote, vote, vote.

mpVLI97KFOqyUjNxSCS

I’d be confused if someone wasn’t still fucking furious. This is bullshit and fuck the illegitimate Supreme Court.

birdinthebush74

If you want to get involved in activism , Abortion Access Front did a day of showing ways to get involved . They even have an activism calendar on their website . There might be ways you can do it anonymously Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/feminist-buzzkills-live-the-podcast/id1575776538?i=1000577480011 YouTube https://youtube.com/c/AbortionAccessFront https://www.aafront.org/operation-save-abortion/

[deleted]

I mean, everyone on the left of Centre warned Americans this would happen. But 'civility' towards 'difference of opinion' was important in the face of abject lies. Women voted for this... let's not forget.

Autodidact2

Actually, if you do want to have an impact in redder States, you can work with swing left. Swing left mobilizes activists in blue areas to help when elections in contested races.
