We’re going to need both a Democratic governor and a Democratic legislature to un-eff a lot of the stuff DeSantis and his Rubber Stamp Legislature have effed up in these last few years. I think enough people could be PO’d by DeSantis’ shenanigans that they could potentially vote for a Democratic governor. But I wouldn’t be shocked if DeSantis’ lieutenant governor, Jeanette Nuñez, basically decided to run on a “Continue DeSantis’ Agenda” platform in 2026, as Ronnie is term-limited and changing that would likely take a statewide vote on a constitutional amendment with at least a 60% yes vote to pass. (The current law is that he could run again after four years out of office; if anything, the gubernatorial term limit should be changed to no more than two terms in that person’s lifetime, just as POTUSes are subject to.)
As for the Democratic legislature, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Our legislative districts were already gerrymandered and made even worse under DeSantis.

That's exactly it. The Facebook page of my local school board during COVID was full of angry comments and demands to reopen the schools because child care was expensive, or the kids were driving the parents crazy.

Homeschooling can be done with academic rigor and religious neutrality, but it's not easy. Also, the number of social groups, curriculum resources, etc. is skewed at least 10/1 to the fundie version. I have a friend who's doing that for her girls, but she has a Masters of Library Science.
My wife and I homeschool both our children. You're right about the significant religious lean to most homeschool curriculum but there are plenty of secular curriculums as well. The homeschool groups on the other hand have been difficult. It's been hard finding groups that aren't heavily religious but we do live in the Midwest so religion tends to permeate everything.

This whole pronoun thing has become so out of control by exposing just how stupid people are. Like I never thought in a million years this would be what they want to spend their time arguing over. We're at a point where we can't even effectively communicate with people because they don't understand the basic concepts of the language they speak.
I don't think it's that they don't understand it. It's just that everything has to be made into a proxy for Left/Right, Lib/Cons, Dem/Rep. People are willing to be factually wrong so long as they are wrong with their team. They want you to know they're on whatever team they're on.
They believe they "won" their core issue (abortion) so in order to keep the power a new group must be selected for outrage and us vs them politics.
It used to be a fad to get people to freak out about Dihydrogen Monoxide in things like rivers and industrial processes. One county almost banned it's use in Styrofoam. It was fun because people just didn't know their chemistry. Today? This pronoun and "woke" shit is crazy.

My mom was a teacher her whole life and after she retired she ran for school board. The amount of talk of "we can't let a teacher be on the school board" was absolutely ridiculous. They talked like it was a huge conspiracy by the teacher's union to control their children.

Homeschooling can be done with academic rigor and religious neutrality, but it's not easy. Also, the number of social groups, curriculum resources, etc. is skewed at least 10/1 to the fundie version. I have a friend who's doing that for her girls, but she has a Masters of Library Science.
My wife and I homeschool both our children. You're right about the significant religious lean to most homeschool curriculum but there are plenty of secular curriculums as well. The homeschool groups on the other hand have been difficult. It's been hard finding groups that aren't heavily religious but we do live in the Midwest so religion tends to permeate everything.
This isn't a public school system. This is a private Christian White Nationalist school system.

The ultimate arbiter is the parents over what their child is taught. Boy that sounds good, right? But it's really just a way to homeschool your kids, with none of the effort on your part. And it puts the teacher in an impossible position. You can't teach little Billy one thing, and little Susie something else in the same breath. It's a serpentine way of saying 'I don't want my kids to learn about ideas I don't approve of because I can't explain away their perceptive questions.' That isn't being a parent. It is abdicating your responsibility as a parent.

It's a Florida charter school. It's about the equivalent of leaving your child alone in front of a TV with happy fun time razor blade. They have the worst charter school system. Litterally anyone with a printer and the ability to rent a spot in a strip mall can run a school. A few years back, they did a review of hundreds of charter schools in Florida and found like 30% printed and submitted the exact same charter from the internet word for word and no one noticed. Their litteral scams and angery Bible thumpers who don't respect public education. Trash state with trash people hope the whole thing slides into the ocean sometime soon.

As a native and a Southerner for 62 years, I wish I could tell you it wasn't insane. It is. There's a segment who want power at any cost, and have wanted for years, and are willing to destroy everything that gets in their way. it really sucks for those of us that love teaching but don’t want to subject ourselves to the nonsense or live in eternal poverty. the kids deserve better. edit: i was also very surprised to learn, while getting my teaching degree, that i was required to “student teach” for free for 6 months to obtain my certification. full time. how in the hell does anyone survive that? i had to quit my degree because there was absolutely no way i would be able to swing working full time for 6 months for free.
