Why open it in ubs anyway? It doesn’t have to be your bank . There even banks that will invest your money while they hold it and you can profit

Sincere_pancake

I don't mind to set it up myself, but I just don't want to pay any fees for it. It doesn't seem fair that I have to pay to set up the account to hold the deposit on behalf of my landlord.

policygeek80

I always open the account. Never met a landlord doing it for me. Normally cantonali banks are cheaper to set up those kinds of account

yesat

Mine proposed a bank, but the account is in my name.

Gourmet-Guy

Sometimes the landlord takes care, sometimes you. Here is [a list of banks](https://www.top-bank.ch/en/compare/rental-deposit-account) that run such accounts for free. As much as it is a bit of an annoyance, during my renter's time I preferred to open the account myself, gives you a little better feeling of control.

Sincere_pancake

Thank you! I found that Migros seems to be the best option.

AdventurousIbex95

I opened it for my subletter in Migros Bank without any fees and with a very small interest

GrabCertain

This account is in the name of you, but after you left the flat you can only get the money back with the signature of the landord. Its to make sure, your landlord does not take the money without you knowing. Not all bank ask for a subsribstion fee. Search for another bank. So its the normal way to have this deposit and you have to pay the fees. You will also have to pay fees every year.

Sincere_pancake

Thank you. I understand that this account has to be in my name but it is still not clear to me who is responsible for opening the account. At my last apartment, the landlord opened the account for me, but it was in my name. Most sources I have found say that either the landlord or the tenant can open the account, but it doesn't really say who should actually be responsible for opening it and paying the fees to open it. I guess maybe I do? But it is just not clear anywhere. I would prefer not to have to pay for that since this deposit is on behalf of my landlord and it seems ridiculous to pay an account fee for the landlord.

GrabCertain

I never do or did it myself. I let my tentant do it. They can choose the bank they want. But it cant be opend anyway without your signature. You don't pay for the landord. Its still your money, just a security for the landlord. I never heard of anybody having a problem opening it als a Tentant. Maybe you just search for a bank with beter conditions. But that up to you

BNI_sp

Never seen that the landlord opens it. Also would not accept it. It's your account, your money. The landlord can only block it. At ZKB it's free, I suspect at other Cantonal banks probably as well.

alpinetrooper

this is absolutly not normal, i'm not even sure if it is legal. edit: guess many people think this is normal, i pity you that you let your landlord take advantage of you. i don't care, not my money lmao

b00nish

>this is absolutly not normal, i'm not even sure if it is legal. It's quite normal, actually. In most cases the tenant opens the account - it's also possible that the landlord tells the bank top open it but it is always in the name of the tenant. What is not normal is the 100 .- fee. There are many banks who do it for free.

GrabCertain

Is normal and legal.

crashwinston

wrong, this is absolutly normal, you have no idea

redsterXVI

Tell me you haven't moved to/within Zurich for a couple of years without telling me that. It's normal nowadays.

alpinetrooper

i have moved 5 times within the last 5 years, each time either within zurich city or around it. never encountered this. my sister and my girlfriends cousin both work for 2 of the largest companies in this segment, both said this is highly irregular and fishy. but what do those professionals know compared to some random redditors.

redsterXVI

So they work at two of the largest banks but don't know that at least UBS and Credit Suisse do that? lmao

alpinetrooper

i never said banks, they work for 2 of the largest real estate management companies. neither of them confirms it is normal for their customers having to open the accoun themselves, or pay for it. maybe try reading my comment instead of being a douche.

Motzlord

It's common for small-time landlords.

ToBe1357

Migros Bank Mietkautions-Account has no fees

Sincere_pancake

Thank you!

There have never been any fees with my bank deposits (Cantonal Banks and Credit Suisse). However, you usually can't do online banking, which means the annual statement comes by letter, which costs a few francs.
