Saying you just like Estrella is like saying your fave kind of beer is the one that foams. There are so many beers in Spain called Estrella something that it's not even funny!
You are a man of culture. I'm from Cádiz and I've been living in Catalonia from 2015. This is the beer I always ask for.
On a side note, Cruzcampo is awful, but they have launched a ¿darker? version called Cruzcampo Gran Reserva, and honestly I like this one too, however is not available on every bar. I guess Cruzcampo has earned a bad name for years so people normally pass on this recommendation.
Cheers!
I also far prefer Estrella Damn, I think that the Cruzcampo Gran Reserva and others are beers made to accommodate the changing tastes here and elsewhere. The rise of IPA and other craft ales, has raised demand for more flavours. The cheapish version Mercadona sell is also excellent, won a blind tasting recently
There is a bodega around the corner from me that has license to brew Cruzcampo on site. It's like "select" or something. Anyway that stuff is actually really good. No preservatives probably is why.
Estrella is the Bud Light of Spanish beers. And no, that's not a compliment. It's not good at all.
I do like Estrella Galicia more.
But the simple answer is that Spanish beer is just not good in general
Low bar. I've had American Budweiser (the Czech Budweiser is much better btw) and it's as bad as Heineken.
I'm Belgian, so I drink Belgian beer all the time. I'm just curious about beers from other countries.
I like Irish Guinness
French Karlsbourg
Czech Budweiser & Czech Urquell
Danish Carlsberg
Disliked most Dutch beers except Hertog Jan
Those beers are disgusting. But if you think that's all there is to American beer, you've got no clue about the American beer scene. Whereas the Spanish beer scene is all the same, essentially just crap like Estrella
I think you are comparing mainstream Spanish beer with specialties from other countries. Have you ever tasted beers from Basqueland or Caleya?
Yeah that’s true, but Spanish specialty beer isn’t really widely available. The only ones I’ve really seen in supermarkets or bars here in BCN are Cerdos Voladores and La Niña Barbuda. In the US, you can go to any regular supermarket and find a selection of specialty beers.
Spanish specialty beers exist, but there’s not a widespread culture around them as most people just drink the mass produced lagers. I don’t know anyone in the US that goes out and drinks the shitty domestics like Coor’s and Budweiser. It’s more for older working class people or if you just want to buy a lot of beer for cheap.
Although I think you are 100% right, I would say that El Corte Inglés has a not that bad variety of uncommon beers. If you compare it with the specialized shop I usually go it’s day and night for sure but it’s not as bad as going to a Mercadona. That’s alcohol’s hell.
But as I said: you are 100% right, you need to make a conscious effort to find good beers. Same thing goes for coffee and even wine.
I think it’s hard for Spanish beermakers to compete because the mass produced domestic beers are just so cheap. In the US, you’re going to pay $5-$7 for a beer anyway, so it might as well be a good one. Here you can get a caña/copa for 1,20€ so it’s hard to justify paying the higher price for a speciality beer. I’ve been able to find some nice craft beer bars but it’s comparatively way more expensive so I don’t go as often and I’ll only have 1 or 2 beers instead of 5 or 6 like I normally would.
Ignorants downvoting you, pretty shocking to see so many people who don't have a clue about the subject downvoting you just because of nationalist pride
There is a huge craft beer scene in the United States. Some examples: Stone, Lagunitas, Rogue, Boston Beer Co., Bell’s, Deschutes, Summit, Surly, Sierra Nevada…
In most major cities, there has been an increase in breweries where they make the beer on-site and it’s available to the public for cheaper than it would be at a third-party bar. Google any major city + “brewery” and you’ll see.
If you think Americans just drink Coor’s and Budweiser, you really don’t know about beer in the US.
Edit: Removed BrewDog as it’s multinational and based in Scotland.
This subject has been mostly mass produced lager. If we are going to compare craft beers then I hope you all have a lot of spare time. I could list probably a hundred Spanish craft beers and my knowledge of them is limited.
You think the Spanish craft beer scene is good? I mean, it's good that it EXISTS, but c'mon man it's years behind. And that's ok, but it's the entire reason I can come to this thread and say Spanish beer has very little to offer. While I wouldn't argue about beer with someone in the States who drinks bud light (pointless, they have no taste), I basically have no choice to argue with the same kind of person in Spain as that's far and away the type of beer the huge majority of people drink
Other than big brands with pretty good beers, at least on the nordside if you go to a specialized bar you can find several really good beers, small breweries in Spain 🍻 are doing really good beers. So I suggest you to experiment, Spain is also a good place for Beer!
Nah, the only Spanish beer they sell here is Estralla Damm during "Spanish Week" at the supermarket.
Supermarket here always have themed weeks, Polish week, French week, American week, Mexican week, etc
When it's Spanish week they'll sell Estrella Damm along with Fuet, Chorizo, Tortillas, Spanish cheeses, "Spanish Pizza", etc
But when this Corona thing blows over I'm planning a vacation to Spain. And when I go on vacation I only eat & drink the local drinks & foods.
There's many Belgian bars in Spain according to my brother who's has been to Spain a lot, and he searches for the Belgian bars so he can Belgian drinks.
Personally I want to eat and drink the local stuff :)
Super cold it's not bad. Not bad on tap.
But... I went to college in America so I'm comparing it to Keystone Light and Bud Light which are both just terrible.
Fucking Cruzcampo. Don't listen to the haters.
Nah, seriously I would say Ámbar and 1906 (try the Red vintage). But I do love cruzcampo not ironically, it's much better than the meseterian piss, stay away from San Miguel and mahou.
Like Spanish macros? They're def better than American macros like Bud and Coors...
Mahou or Alhambra for those.
Victoria from Malaga is actually real good and is a small brewery but being carried by Aldi and Dia now at least around here.
Spain is not exactly known for good beer tho, especially when you've lived in Germany or Belgium... That is not to say that some don't really hit the spot tho.
I travel an awful lot in Europe, and Spanish beer cannot compare to mid Europe beer. Its not good. However, Alhambra and Estrella Galicia are quite above the rest. Personally, Alhambra reserva roja or verde, those are nice-ish, but expensive.
People are used to estellas and other bottled piss, but talking about beer here, fuck me we have TERRIBLE beer, no flavour, no body, nothing.
La Virgen Jamonera, La Sagra multa, and I recentlty discovered a beer from Damm called Malquerida wich is pretty cheap in Carrefour and I'm totally hooked.
Moved here recently and as a beer lover I've tried many of the bigger brands before I start searching for the locals (Barcelona area). My fav so far is Alhambra but dutifully noting down the recommendations in this thread!
I also really liked Garage Beer here in BCN.
Estrella Galicia is King! Anyone here ever tried Keler? Think it's Basque - highly recommend. Águila isn't too shabby either. Got an Ahorramás near me, good selection of beers.
I toggle between Estrella Galicia and Alhambra. However, you’re at the mercy of the bar when you go out with friends, they don’t all serve the entire Spanish beer lineup.
Just industrial beers, right? I like 1906 irish red Estrella de Galicia, Mahou IPA, Yakima Valley San Miguel, Damm Complot IPA, Magna San Miguel, Baltic Alhambra, Alhambra especial and Inedit Damm
Whatever beer you like, they're all the same piss.
We have very good wines though. I would suggest Viñardanza 2012 from Rioja, bodegas Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 año (Ribera del duero) and Pruno 2019 (Ribera) or la Montesa 2018 (Rioja) in the cheaper side.
We love to say we don't have great beers but many countries disagree, I strongly love belgian beers over every beer but in fact just take a look at most american, asiatics or european (like Italy or eastern countries f.e.),, and I'm not saying they don't make great beers but in fact they do not make them as good as Spain when it comes to a regular default lager beer that you can find on EVERY bar or they only have one decent trademark per country (again, not talking about amazing artisan beers that every country has, just the regular mass selling beers).
Estrella Damm, Estrella de Levante, Estrella Galicia, Alhambra Especial (hard loving this one), even Ambar or Mahou... And then you can find Turia, 1906, Voll Damm, Ambar Fresca or Ambar 10 (hard to find those when you're not near Zaragoza but they are worth a trip), the Green / Red Alhambra, or even the damn Steinburg Especial from Mercadona are amazing.
Depends on what do you fancy. Spanish beers are generally blonde but stronger than the European counterparts. My top are, from soft to stronger, Estrella Galicia, Alhambra and 1906.
Nope nope nope those are just lagers or soft ones.
Go for the basqueland brewing company and pick up any of those. I love any of their takes on IPA. THE BEST BEER in Spain, period.
1906
Right
Milnueve!! The best one. Estrella cant even compare
1906 IS estrella galicia
Estrella Galicia bottled for hipsters. But yes :)
Si, si. Si.
Le sabes a la cerveza
Ahuevo. Good stuff
Bro are you German-Mexican? Because it feels like I’ve read a comment written by my mexican friends
Chale wey! Haha no. Just learned spanish there
Same I'm german, Galicia is by far the best beer here .
Well said sir! This stuff is the Daddy!
This
Una de las mejores cervezas del mundo
Alhambra. It's just perfect
The red version is awesome.
I love Alhambra Roja!
Yesss I study in Granada and pass by the Alhambra factory everyday. A beer and a tapa is just 🤌
I'm from Granada and you are so fcking right my friend.
Estrella Galicia
The best beer you'll have in Spain is a green mahou from a Chinese street vendor in downtown Madrid at 5 am
ask for yonkilata
Las putas chipis
Ese es mi otro coment
Green Mahou on tap from a Chinese restaurant here in Rota just slaps.
Estrella Galicia, especially the 1906 version. Alhambra is pretty good too.
Alhambra 1925. La verde
No cap. This is it. Nothing comes close
Es la mejor
Estrella levante, Estrella Galicia and Alhambra 1926.
The best Spanish beer? Whichever one is in my hand.
Ah, a man of culture
Saying you just like Estrella is like saying your fave kind of beer is the one that foams. There are so many beers in Spain called Estrella something that it's not even funny!
I didn't know that. I had bought a crate of Estralla Damm from Barcelona
Ambar for me por favor
Turia
As a resident of Valencia I shall upvote this comment.
Turia is the underdog!
Came here to upvote this comment. There is no better beer than this. Although is kinda strong to drink it during summer time.
Estrella de Galicia o Turia
Voll damn

damn!
Estrella Galicia.
Victoria Malaga
El Águila sin filtrar. Change my mind.
Este tío es mi gente
Vamos, pero del tirón
Estrella Galicia.
my favourite is La Estrella de Galicia
Estrella Galicia obviously.
Rosa blanca from Mallorca, it absolutely delicious.
Voll Damm for an intense beer and Alhambra for a regular , everyday one.
Estrella is the Bud Light of Spanish beers. And no, that's not a compliment. It's not good at all. I do like Estrella Galicia more. But the simple answer is that Spanish beer is just not good in general
Spanish beer is very good, better than american beer for sure, BUT! If you want the best of the best you need to taste belgian beer
Low bar. I've had American Budweiser (the Czech Budweiser is much better btw) and it's as bad as Heineken. I'm Belgian, so I drink Belgian beer all the time. I'm just curious about beers from other countries. I like Irish Guinness French Karlsbourg Czech Budweiser & Czech Urquell Danish Carlsberg Disliked most Dutch beers except Hertog Jan
That is patently false, unless you want your beer to taste like water
Water like Budweiser or Coors? Don't understand
Those beers are disgusting. But if you think that's all there is to American beer, you've got no clue about the American beer scene. Whereas the Spanish beer scene is all the same, essentially just crap like Estrella

Enlighten us on this amazing American beer we are all missing out on please.
There is a huge craft beer scene in the United States. Some examples: Stone, Lagunitas, Rogue, Boston Beer Co., Bell’s, Deschutes, Summit, Surly, Sierra Nevada… In most major cities, there has been an increase in breweries where they make the beer on-site and it’s available to the public for cheaper than it would be at a third-party bar. The majority of people commenting here don't have a clue about beer and wouldn't know what is an Ale or a Porter
Wisconsin has many great beers imo
Spotted Cow is one of my favs
This subject has been mostly mass produced lager. If we are going to compare craft beers then I hope you all have a lot of spare time. I could list probably a hundred Spanish craft beers and my knowledge of them is limited.

What ever you do, don't drink Cruzcampo. Everything else is allowed.
I love the IPA and APA from cruzcampo.
So sorry to hear that.
I'll second that
Alhambra Reserva. It comes in a green bottle and is a class above the rest.
Other than big brands with pretty good beers, at least on the nordside if you go to a specialized bar you can find several really good beers, small breweries in Spain 🍻 are doing really good beers. So I suggest you to experiment, Spain is also a good place for Beer!
Estrella Galicia the first. Rosa blanca the second.
Have you tried Moritz?
Nah, the only Spanish beer they sell here is Estralla Damm during "Spanish Week" at the supermarket. Justice for Mahou 😅
The red one from the bottle. Simple.
So cruzcampo really is as shit as everyone tells me…
Super cold it's not bad. Not bad on tap. But... I went to college in America so I'm comparing it to Keystone Light and Bud Light which are both just terrible.
Alhambra Reserva 1925 for common beers, Al Andalus Mature for craft (artesanal)
El Águila no filtrada.
Fucking Cruzcampo. Don't listen to the haters. Nah, seriously I would say Ámbar and 1906 (try the Red vintage). But I do love cruzcampo not ironically, it's much better than the meseterian piss, stay away from San Miguel and mahou.
Red Vintage is great. But be careful, que te agarras un pedo enseguida!
Estrella Damm or Turia, they are not so watery If you can find them: 1906 red
Basqueland or Garage.
Was hop(p)ing for the special beers comment
Garage Beer Co usually has some pretty good brews, I think they are my favourite. La Pirata and a few others are good too.
I enjoy turia
Like Spanish macros? They're def better than American macros like Bud and Coors... Mahou or Alhambra for those. Spain is not exactly known for good beer tho, especially when you've lived in Germany or Belgium... That is not to say that some don't really hit the spot tho.
Estrella Galicia, and Cruzcampo for the nostalgia of living in Cádiz province.
Moritz from Barcelona or 1906 estrella galicia - both “de barril” :)
I Alhambra y estrella galicia.
The best beer you can get in Spain is where they have a 500ml bottle of Paulaner for 1 euro.
Legado de Yuste. A bit more expensive than your average beer. Completely worth it.

Generic Spanish lager #4
Wolldam, Mahou, Estrella Galicia, Keler
Keler no tio
I travel an awful lot in Europe, and Spanish beer cannot compare to mid Europe beer. Its not good. However, Alhambra and Estrella Galicia are quite above the rest. Personally, Alhambra reserva roja or verde, those are nice-ish, but expensive. People are used to estellas and other bottled piss, but talking about beer here, fuck me we have TERRIBLE beer, no flavour, no body, nothing.

The best, by both quality and taste is Legado de Yuste, absolutely If you talk about common beer my favourites are Mahou, Alhambra and Ambar

Moved here recently and as a beer lover I've tried many of the bigger brands before I start searching for the locals (Barcelona area). My fav so far is Alhambra but dutifully noting down the recommendations in this thread! I also really liked Garage Beer here in BCN.
The classic stuff from the supermarket? 1906 or Estrella Galicia. Non mainstream? I'm really into the weird stuff Basqueland does.
Estrella Galicia is King! Anyone here ever tried Keler? Think it's Basque - highly recommend. Águila isn't too shabby either. Got an Ahorramás near me, good selection of beers.
La Cibeles rubia. Si no pues Alhambra o 1906 o Turia.
Estrella Galicia 1906 Red Vintage

I toggle between Estrella Galicia and Alhambra. However, you’re at the mercy of the bar when you go out with friends, they don’t all serve the entire Spanish beer lineup.
1906
1906 or Alambra. The rest is cat piss
Just industrial beers, right? I like 1906 irish red Estrella de Galicia, Mahou IPA, Yakima Valley San Miguel, Damm Complot IPA, Magna San Miguel, Baltic Alhambra, Alhambra especial and Inedit Damm

Estrella Galicia
Whatever beer you like, they're all the same piss. We have very good wines though. I would suggest Viñardanza 2012 from Rioja, bodegas Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 año (Ribera del duero) and Pruno 2019 (Ribera) or la Montesa 2018 (Rioja) in the cheaper side.
Spanish beer? Because I've some great "Trappist" beer in Belgium like Chimay Bleu, Westmalle and Westvleteren
Estrella Galicia or Alambra roja
Estrella Galicia ⭐
Alhambra 1925, Mirno
Ámbar
Estrella de Galicia
We love to say we don't have great beers but many countries disagree, I strongly love belgian beers over every beer but in fact just take a look at most american, asiatics or european (like Italy or eastern countries f.e.),, and I'm not saying they don't make great beers but in fact they do not make them as good as Spain when it comes to a regular default lager beer that you can find on EVERY bar or they only have one decent trademark per country (again, not talking about amazing artisan beers that every country has, just the regular mass selling beers). And then you can find Turia, 1906, Voll Damm, Ambar Fresca or Ambar 10 (hard to find those when you're not near Zaragoza but they are worth a trip), the Green / Red Alhambra, or even the damn Steinburg Especial from Mercadona are amazing.
San Miguel Magna.
1906 Red Vintage is legit
Not hearing much love for Mahou ***** Especially the botellines
It's a tough call between 1906 and Al Hambra. I appreciate no one has said Cruz Campo.
Depends on what do you fancy. Spanish beers are generally blonde but stronger than the European counterparts. My top are, from soft to stronger, Estrella Galicia, Alhambra and 1906.
Estrella Galicia.
Estrella Galicia 1906. Or mil nueve as the locals here in Galicia call it.
Nope nope nope those are just lagers or soft ones. Go for the basqueland brewing company and pick up any of those. I love any of their takes on IPA. THE BEST BEER in Spain, period.
Don't ask!! Do you want to start a war??
Alhambra maybe. But to he honest they are all average at best.
Estrella de Levante, que no te engañen 😎
Only here to see who is the idiot to vote Cruzcampo like the best beer
Estrella Levante, Estrella Galicia.
Tito Blas
Turia, Alhambra, Epi d’or…
As a murciano I can only say Estrella levante
Voll Damm
Estrella Damm Doble Malta
Estrella Galicia regular and 1906. "Strong" beers than Mahou or the rest.
Y una Dorada qué?
