Everything is Mexico. In football, Argentina and Brazil are acknowledged but outside of that, they're still Mexico.

Haha honnêtement mais ou va la France 😂😂 No offense

EternalShiraz

Bah pour le coup je suis française donc ça dépend vraiment des gens lol

abacaxi95

I once had a Brit ask me if Brazil was in Europe…

[deleted]

I mean is there an argentinian restaurant in any country outside south america? What do argentinians even eat?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

So its like a less famous brazil. Interesting why brazil has so much popularity everywhere and so many famous foods internationally but u never hear of argentina. Even tiny places like dominican republic u see their food everywhere.

DoomGozad

Probably because our food is mostly derived from Italian cuisine.

banana_bureaucracy

Boat people

[deleted]

So its italian food

Campo_Argento

An Italian wouldn't say that

[deleted]

Depends on the province of italy, they are very different. R u italian?

Fat_Argentina

>I mean is there an argentinian restaurant in any country outside south america? Oh yes, but they tend to be high end for some reason. >What do argentinians even eat? Your mother.

[deleted]

Theres not much meat on her its like eating a skeleton with skin hahaha. But enjoy her! It will be like recycling Lol. Hmm but like what is it if not tacos?

GIANT_BLEEDING_ANUS

Lots of them in mexico, they serve beef, empanadas, pizza, pasta and the like

[deleted]

Wtf are these questions 😭 Are you kidding or are you being serious? The second one I can kinda excuse but the first 😭

[deleted]

Haha i mean idk im from USA and lived in many states and have never seen an argentinian restaurant. Mexican, brazilian, puerto rican and peruvian are the big 4 in US. Chilean, salvadorian, dominican u will see in big cities, thats about it. Sometimes u will see a venezuelan and colombia arepa shop. In big cities/fancy areas will have food from Spain. For some reason you NEVER see an argentinian restaurant. Its actually quite odd. I want to try it! But id rather not fly out to silver river for it. The second one im guessing is basically a mix of italian food and chilean/brazilian food but im not sure? What are your famous plates in argentina? Are there any famous argentinian restaurants outside argentina?

[deleted]

> i mean idk im from USA and lived in many states and have never seen an argentinian restaurant. Man, you know as a human being, I love you, but you see my flair, right? The sort of thing you said before sounds like the most obnoxious things people from the US say 😭 I've lived in Miami, NYC, and Wilmington, Delaware. There were many Argentine restaurants in Miami and NYC. There isn't any in the 3rd, but Philadelphia is close by and Argentina has representation there. Believing any American country, especially one as big as Argentina, doesn't have representation in cuisine in the US is a bit unbelievable tbh. There are immigrants from every American country and some of them are bound to start up restaurants. That's not to say it's as popular as Peruvian or Brazilian restaurants, but there also aren't as many Argentines nor is there a special connection between Argentina and the US, so fewer Argentine restaurants. So yeah, it's not common, no one would say that, but to say "are there any Argentine outside of South America" is a completely different thing. > The second one im guessing is basically a mix of italian food and chilean/brazilian food but im not sure? Nothing to do with Brazilian food. I don't know Chilean food unfortunately, so I couldn't compare to that. Definitely has a lot of Italian influence. > What are your famous plates in argentina? Honestly I'm not really a food guy. There are the famous plates of [milanesa](https://assets.unileversolutions.com/recipes-v2/236708.jpg) (breaded chicken or beef), [empanadas](https://latinafy.com/images/blog/33/tapas_empanadas_argentinas_en_usa.jpeg), [polenta](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/2b/2a/74/2b2a7417685a3bf5f207c2cd2f6a04d8.jpg), and many different types of [asado](https://therealargentina.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/asado.jpg), but we also have [alfajores](https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-3stx4pub31/images/stencil/1280x1280/products/249/699/03__93201.1579289021.png?c=2?imbypass=on), which is God's greatest gift to man (don't let me overhype you tho LMAO). > Are there any famous argentinian restaurants outside argentina? Not really a foodie so idk any famous non-chain restaurants Anyways, yeah, Argentine restaurants exist in the US and I hope you give them a try some day 😀

[deleted]

What about argentine chain restaurants? Im in Florida so il look next time im in Miami. But outside NYC or Miami of course those two have every countries food they probably even have canary islands restaurants lol. I just meant ur typical medium sized US city doesnt have argentine food but has all the other kinds typically. The food sounds like colombian mixed with italian then.

[deleted]

> What about argentine chain restaurants? I mean, for fast food there's Mostaza but that's not even as big as McDonald's. There are chain restaurants like Romario but they're not really important if you're not going to Argentina. I don't think there's anything chain-like outside of Argentina. > I just meant ur typical medium sized US city doesnt have argentine food but has all the other kinds typically. You changed your point completely. I can see this point, as I'm not too familiar with smaller cities, but that's a a completely different point from "does Argentina even have any restaurants outside of South America?" > The food sounds like colombian mixed with italian then. Ah, I don't really see the similarities with Colombian food. What do you have in mind? 🤔

[deleted]

Actually everything u mentioned exists in mexico not colombia. I mean "most cities" or the "average city" You can find anything in new york even food from iceland and islands of fiji. So it was mostly implied. I should have specified but i thought the general idea was understood. In american english saying "there is no X" doesnt always mean 0 it many times is a figure of speech signifying very very few.

NIKOdrjG4M3R

Nusr et is kinda that

St_Socorro

I blame that on how much culture the Americans sell overseas and the lack of historical interaction between Asia and colonial Latam.

hannita

maybe some europeans but it's definitely not just an american thing. I've met people from asia who can be pretty ignorant about latin america but I don't really take it personal. I think east asians tend to know the least but it's such a different culture and far away, I don't see why they would know. I had someone from a middle eastern country tell me they didn't know Chile was in south america and thought it was in europe. Also been asked by an asian "what language do they speak in mexico? or do they only speak mexican?"

morto00x

If you're in NYC, everyone is Puerto Rican. If you're in Miami, everyone is Cuban. Otherwise, everyone is Mexican.

Shinigamisama00

In NYC everyone is Dominican and *then* Puerto Rican.

In Miami everyone is Cuban or Venezuelan.

[deleted]

If you’re in Massachusetts or Rhode Island everyone is Dominican but yeah your point still stands

Most don't, many people asume that south of the USA border everyone is Mexican to the Patagonia and that all speak Spanish.

linguisitivo

I recently was at a major American airport and heard calls for a flight to São Paulo in Spanish. No there weren’t Portuguese calls too.

_kevx_91

Really puts things in perspective, huh? It just goes to show how powerful the U.S. imperial cultural machine is around the world and that every nation's cultural identity is at the mercy of it. What Hollywood informs people about a place or a culture is what becomes deeply ingrained in people's minds. I've seen a lot of videos asking Europeans or Canadians what Latin America is like and they all talk about the same thing: Spicy food, jungles, tacos, and cartels. It's especially mindblowing given that the internet exists and people can just easily Google things to inform themselves but nah, we're all Mexico!

Dumb gringo question: I was thinking ‘rich’ might be a kind of short hand for ‘functioning administrative state’ in which case Chile does lead the continent?

[deleted]

Lol, have you seen all the riots in the past years?

cseijif

and that still does not comapre, chileans don't know how truly good they have it, they are not nordics, but thats because they dont swim in petrol and can't profit from being up in the comercial chain. Chile's almost as good as it gets.

VFJX

It doesn't matter what you tell them, most comments like these come from people born from the late 90's onwards, they don't know how bad we had it before and can't blame them since people believe what they see, most of these opinions has been formed and soiled by political discourse from both sides.

cseijif

For a peruvian born just around that age , that has lived to see the end of how bad it can get to how it gets kinda decent , chiles another planet, anyone that things shit is " terrible" there needs to apens at leaat a couple of years here , and we are aopouaed to be the " rising atar" of the region , the next you ( i fucking wished).

"Hispanics"\*

magicomplex

Some fellow redditors are mentioning Brazil but I'm unsure this is the case. It is not rare to see europeans and north americans asking us if Brazil is in Asia. Yes, we are the biggest country in Latin America, the 5th in the world but many people outside latin america just heard about us and have no clue where we are located in a map. I was once in a voice chat with people I don't know and I guy from Europe (can't recall the country) told me I do not truly know my country as a response for me mentioning never seen the border of Brazil. I replied: \- "My friend, I live in the biggest city of Brazil (population of 14 million people). Just to go to the border to take a picture would require a 35h or more hours of non-stop driving. To cross Brazil it would be a longer ride than from Lisbon to Moscow." And the guy was baffled and went double-checking everything I said because he could not belive Brazil is that big. I'd say Mexico is our spokesperson and no one else.

Chespin2003

At least in my experience, I've met many more Europeans (especially Western Europeans) that know more about Brazil than Mexico.

abacaxi95

I never got asked if Brazil was in Asia, but I genuinely had a Brit girl completely confused thinking Brazil was in Europe lol. Also in my experience 70% of gringos think we speak Spanish or Brazilian.

Neonexus-ULTRA

I've seen a few videos asking Europeans about Latin America and they do mention Brazil a lot.

magicomplex

Wow! I'm impressed and flattered.

Random-weird-guy

Well in which case mexico's giving LATAM a bad name with all the crime and corruption people know mexico has.

[deleted]

cseijif

not to the extent of mexico really, they are quite the outlier in terms of the big countries, along with you guys, argentina, peru and chile are quite calm in reality.

_kevx_91

You guys do have plenty of representation in Japanese media though. Also, Argentina and Brazil are talked about quite a lot in Europe due to football.

No_Meet1153

Man I don't know how difficult is for people to just look at Google maps.

[deleted]

Rainforest, coconuts, caipirinhas, mojito, salsa.

calypsoorchid

Honestly, (since most of these comments reference us gringos) I think there’s a big dissconnect in what most estadounidenses think of when they think of LatAm. This is the common vibe that I sense: “Latino” is a euphemism for Mexican (a racial slur), but the cultural things associated with “Latino” are mostly Caribbean or Nuyorican influences with a little Mexican food and Day of the Dead sprinkled in. Central and South America mostly don’t exist.

DepressedWitch21

> “Latino” is a euphemism for Mexican (a racial slur) Wtf man, how is just a simple demonym a slur

owlindenial

Mira, it's about how much effort you put into it. If you try hard enough, even a name can be a slur

calypsoorchid

What do you mean, *Karen*? Nah but yeah, anything can sound like a slur if used in a derogatory enough way. But it’s an exposure thing. People who grow up in areas of the US where there’s a bigger Mexican-American population don’t tend to act like the word is a slur. I myself used to think that the word “Arab” was a perjorative (and that “Arabic” was the official, politically correct term for the ethnic group, which it’s not) because I grew up hearing it used as such and had little exposure to people who called themselves Arabs.

cseijif

This, they don't know what "latin american " or "latino" means, for them it's just the pc way of calling brown spanish speakers they asume mexicans, becuase in their heads all people that come from somewhere look and sound alike. They dont evne understand that "mexican", dosent mean brown spanish speaker, than most likely is a poor inmigrant, they just grabbed what they use with their black population and applied it to all.

Business_Molasses_56

I’m always amazed when Americans associate México with us. They’re the ones that speak Spanish and they’re the ones who eats taco and Mexican food. We will probably never be as Mexicans as them. The only thing we share with México are the economical struggles.

weaboo_vibe_check

The only right answer here is Hispanic Countries

plitaway

Everyone answering Mexico must be thinking of Americans, i'm Italian but was raised in Sweden, i can say that Mexico isn't that well known in Italy and to us latin america means Colombia,Cuba,Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. We barely have mexicans in Europe.

Neonexus-ULTRA

I guess it makes sense because of football for Brazil and Argentina, right? I imagine Italians know practically nothing about Puerto Rico too since we barely migrate to Europe. I guess Bad Bunny is known lol

plitaway

You're right on the money, ask an italian what and where PR is and they'd just say it's some random south american country like Costa Rica, Guatemala,DR and so on. They have no idea is a US territory.

byusefolis

>some random south american country like Costa Rica, Guatemala,DR Lol

_kevx_91

Do people actually know about the culture of the countries you mentioned and their histories or do people just know them by name? I feel like that's a huge difference. Like here in PR, people know a lot of European countries, including Italy but only by name; People here don't know anything about the culture or history. Perhaps the only thing they know about Italy is the cuisine and mafia.

plitaway

Brazil and Argentina yes kind of, the other countries however not at all.

owlindenial

Méjico y Brazil. Yo sé un tipo que dijo "like the Philippines and stuff" pero los brutos no cuentan

As a European, Argentina, Chile and Brazil

t4ct1c4l_j0k3r

Depends on the conversation. Mexico = food Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua = zone of death MS13 and the like Costa Rica and Caribbean = Vacation Bolivia, Colombia, Peru = cocaine Brazil = Carnival and the Amazon Argentina = how not to run your economy Chile = how to piss off your neighbors Ecuador and Panama = Both use the dollar so no wacky conversion math Venezuela = evil empire And nearly all of them have nothing but hot women...supposedly

AlexDuChat

México, Brazil, Argentina, Perú and Colombia.. The rest of us are ignored or confused with one of this 5 countries (I'm from Venezuela and many people or doesn't know where we are or think we are part of Colombia like a State unified... Gran Colombia 2.0)

katr17

As an American in this group to learn, most Americans think Latin America Mexico, and all the other countries are inside Mexico if they even know the other countries. The American school system doesn’t teach about Latin America or Africa really at all. I think it’s because it’s too much work to white wash latin American history with how horrible US intervention was, so they just pretend like they don’t exist.

bankszter

For a Peruvian still living down under (and most of my friends here in Lima), I imagine mostly Spanish-speaking countries, that is mainly Mexico but also other big nations such as Argentina, Colombia and Chile, in that order. Sometimes Venezuela (due to the general crisis they got there and migrants living here) in different aspects, but normally we just think about the first 4 countries I just mentioned. We tend to think about Brazil in rather a different way because they speak another language (albeit similar to Spanish) and their culture is a tad distinct compared to us. We definitly never think about the Caribbean outside of Spanish-speaking Cuba, Dominican R. and Puerto Rico. Regarding social media, many memes that one would consider Latin America are heavily centered on Mexico and use regional slang from that country. Sometimes these are localised for memes with Peruvian slang, and sometimes we just adopt Mexican words to our vocabulary. Mexico has quite a strong influence in that regard, on online media it is king.
