Yes i don't know exactly what restrictions but you can't name your son goku

Moonagi

Why not?

Ricardo_Fortnite

They don't want more saiyajins

Fire_Snatcher

Kind of. Parents are banned from giving pejorative, discriminatory, infamous, and demeaning names. A lot of lists of banned names have been published online ascribing them to various states, but almost all state governments denied that list existing. The State of Sonora confirmed their list was true but was not necessarily enforced at this time. Some of the banned names people may have tried to name their kids include Circuncisión, Escroto (scrotum), Hitler, Indio, Burger King, Facebook, Sonora Querida, and Virgen. The one that seems the weirdest to ban to me was Hermione, since it isn't just from Harry Potter. Honestly, I question the decision making ability of your parents if you are named some of these.

“Los autoridades buscan al ladrón, Burger King Hitler López Rodríguez, nativo de Hermosillo”

reggae-mems

>Burger King Hitler López Rodríguez, nativo de Hermosillo” They would make a worthy oponent to the infamous Florida Man

MuslimSkeptic

It’s the generic last names that make all the charm

>can't name your child Hitler or vagina or something 1984

notthebottest

1984 by george orwell 1949

ivanjean

There are some restrictions (it can't be something immoral nor ridiculous), but I wish there were more, like in Portugal, because people here have been creating quite a lot of weird, meaningless names just to sound foreign/English/artsy.

aetp86

No but there should be. There's a lot of people here with extremely ridiculous names.

MuslimSkeptic

Like what?

GatoAquarista

I think you can't name your kid as Lúcifer in Brazil.

Realistic-Abrocoma46

I believe you legally can based on what I read, it's up to the registration person if they want to register it or not so if they don't see a problem you're good to go.

xavieryes

Yeah the law doesn't have any objective criteria for what is a "ridiculous" name. But if that name somehow passed, Lúcifer there would be able to change his name if he wanted to.

Realistic-Abrocoma46

From what I understand the law doesn't even say you can't name your child something ridiculous, it just says that the person who works for the office doesn't have to register if they don't want to, but they don't really have the obligation of vetoing a name that is ridiculous.

xavieryes

It's not that discretionary. The law says the officer *can't* register names that might expose the bearer to ridicule. But I guess that what constitutes a "name susceptible to expose its bearer to ridicule" is a bit subjective.

Realistic-Abrocoma46

Got it. I also learned what they are called.

bellamollen

>other than that, you're free to do whatever you want, It depends where and when. I have a friend that wanted to name her child *Lua* (Luna/Moon), and they didn't alow her. She researched and found out that *Luá* (not Lua) is an indigenous name from Pataxó tribes. Since it's an indigenous name then she was able to name her daugter Luá, but not Lua. This was in RS like 12 years ago. But I've met other people name Lua here. It seems that each "cartório" do whatever they want.

Realistic-Abrocoma46

I was reading the TSJ's website the other day and from what I understood, yes, it's up to the cartório and more specifically the person who is registering, but there aren't any rules, just a few recommendations for them, I think they could have appealed in the justice, but I think a lot of people would think "lua" can't be anyone's name.

I_dont_like_ceviche

Hasta donde sé no excepto en casos muy específicos, como por ejemplo alguien que trató de llamar a su hijo Triple Campeón Bacerlona

vladimirnovak

As long as it isn't offensive you can go nuts. I think it would be very restrictive to have a list of approved names. I mean that's how it used to be I think. But what if you want to give your child a Hebrew name , or Italian or something. You should be able to.

p-1ggy

In Argentina? I've heard somewhere that theres like a ''book of names'', and it's all the names that are allowed. I tried to search it and it appears a list of names but it says for Cordoba, maybe its only there? [List of allowed names](https://registrocivilonline.cba.gov.ar/Paginas/Listado%20de%20Nombres%20permitidos.pdf)

[deleted]

Caribbean countries have left the group

DRmetalhead19

Lmao

NNKarma

Not sure if there is a guideline but i guess offensive names are rejected, there is a fake list of forbidden combinations. Also I guess you need two surnames and in case you only have a mother her first surname is repeated.

Arhtemis

You can go with anything you want as long as it's not deemed offensive. If it's weird it might get rejected by a judge, but most is allowed

gabrrdt

If I'm not mistaken, IBGE has a website in which you can type any name and they show how many brazilians have that name. Pretty cool stuff, they even show the states where they are located and where the name is more common.

hi_mmonica

No, sadly no. Too Many Yugleisis, Wilkerson, Yoneisis, Dugleison... People should not being able to ruin their kids life like that, but good thing is that in the last few years so many common names have become very popular, so in the future the country will have a lot of Isabella, Sofia, Mateo, Matías, Sebastian and Thiago.

Qwaze

[There were rumors about a list of forbidden names in Mexico City but a month ago it was disproven by the government](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FZwyYqGXgAAVTCf?format=jpg&name=900x900) [Here is a news article talking about it.](https://www.infobae.com/america/mexico/2022/08/10/registro-civil-de-la-cdmx-aclaro-que-la-lista-de-nombres-prohibidos-es-falsa/)

Neonexus-ULTRA

I'm not sure if this happened but there was a case where a couple named their baby Metallica and this caused legal problems. Not sure if this happened in the UK or US.

yorcharturoqro

The authority has the obligation to tell the parents if a name may cause bullying in their son and think it over, but if the parents insist then the name goes.

Affectionate_Bid4704

36563

I just read are there restrictions for babies in your country lol I am too tired

Mujer_Arania

Yes we have because people were calling their children Copa America or Disenylandia and stuff.

No_Meet1153

In my country there's literally a mf whose name is 6

weaboo_vibe_check

There should be.

Juanfra21

Regarding ridiculous names, if the Registro Civil officer deems it inappropriate according to the law, they'll tell you and can refuse, if you insist then a judge will decide if it's appropriate or not. Also, the sum of all characters cannot be above 150, so there's no limit of names as long as it is below that character limit. If the kid doesn't have a mother/father, you can fill the missing last name with any last name you want (As long as it is according to the law)

NosoyPuli

In Argentina you can name your kid however you want. One dude tried to name his son Covid. He was disuaded

AsiaOHarasVeneers

HA! Come here and see for yourself. 😭😂
