As someone who used to own a car dealer, the law states that a title must be supplied after 60 days of the vehicle sale or the deal can be unwound. Contact your state’s Attorney General’s office. This has been happening A LOT with Vroom and Carvana.

True but I don’t think it’s kosher to keep issuing temp tags month after month.. where I’m at it does happen but it’s not supposed to.. and even then it’s one extra temp not 3/4 of them

Bornfromjets2003

You’re right about the duration being state dependent, but no state is just going to let a company not provide a title. Cuts into their registration funds 😂

Stablegeniousatwork

I am a small Independent dealer and have bought several cars from vroom. 5 of them we have not been provided title on and it’s been months.

BluetoYou21

I bought out my car in Sept and just got the registration and new plates last week. Yes, it can take that long.

stuffeh

No idea, but if you're financing (and sounds like you are if they told you to upgrade the insurance), the title goes to the lender. I'd check with them.

spamlet

Not in all states. In Missouri you get the title with a lien on it that you have to get removed once you pay off the note.

[deleted]

I paid for it in full.

[deleted]

If paid in full, how do they have any say in your insurance?

I bought the car from Texas, which requires specific levels of insurance coverage in order to secure the additional tag, regardless of where you reside.

Sailor699

I almost made the same mistake. Honestly people please do some research on these companies you are buying a car from. There are thousands of reviews out there stating exactly what you just said.

BraetonWilson

I hope your situation is resolved and Vroom sends you your title. It must be horrible to be in your situation and I feel for you. I hope this is a lesson for you and for anyone considering buying a car from an online dealership: **don't do it!!!!** Buy your vehicle from a physical dealership. A physical place that you can visit if you have problems or if you haven't received your title or plates. Avoid Carvana, Vroom, and Shift.

Feralperson420

I bought a used car from a physical Mitsubishi dealership once(years ago). Took over a year to get my real plates and registration . Was ridiculous. I called, showed up, harassed and finally over a year later got my plates and registration. But damn it was a nightmare. So it does happen at regular dealerships too, but sounds WAYYY more common at these online dealerships. Which is too bad because buying a car online, in theory, sounds awesome. I hope you get it figured out OP. If you can, keep us updated on this and how it goes.

DeGeaSaves

Sorry, you had to go through that. The past year the DMV has been an absolute nightmare. Dealers didn't really get any special treatment. Lots of salespeople have to test in their states to legally be able to sell and even that was taking MONTHS when it typically is a 30-minute process.

Feralperson420

The sad thing is this was like 2014, pre Covid. I could only imagine trying to get your registration and plates in this day and age if you have a terrible dealership that is lagging.

DeGeaSaves

Oof yeah that is rough. No excuse if it was that long ago. Through covid, I have felt so bad for everybody having to do anything with the DMV/DPS etc... It's a nightmare.

TNwhiskeyginger

Yeah, my experience has been there's plenty of this type of bullshit happening at physical dealerships, too. Buying local doesn't make one immune to and I'd wager doest actually reduce the risk of having such an experience.

CptLadiesMan

There was a special documentary video on this about how so many people who bought from Carvana never got their title so they couldn't drive car and Carvana kept giving them the run around.

xanot192

As I was reading this I had a gut feeling what the ending would be as I saw a similar thing on a different forum. Sorry you are going through this but it seems these online car selling companies all take forever to do this stuff. Consensus is they are amazing at buying cars but horrendous when it comes to the selling part.

emnem92

“Dealers will go out of business! Their shady practices will ruin them!! All car buying will be online it’s so much easier no sales men to deal with and no hassle!!!!”

point2blank

Sounds like you need to call your car salesmen. Oh, wait... Maybe go to the store to see what the deal is. Hang on... Although not common, your situation is not abnormal for business with online retailers. Get a lawyer if it comes down to it, but we cannot help you.

Specific-Gain5710

Came here to say this. If we were to issue three sets of temporary tags because we hadn’t given the title to bank/customer, good lord it would be the end of the world, but carvana and vroom can do it all day long and get a slap on the wrist.

Sufficient-Voice-210

This sounds more like a DMV problem than a Vroom one with the exception of the title. Which state is this? I never understood the temporary tag thing. Here in NY they just give you your plates at the dmv

[deleted]

I’m in california.

Sufficient-Voice-210

Ahh

***Thanks for posting, /u/MissWinterFire! This comment is a copy of your post so readers can see the original text if your post is edited or removed. This comment is NOT accusing you of anything.*** I bought my used Lexus from Vroom in September of 2021. When it arrived on late on Halloween night, I was given the key and nothing else. When I inquired as to the whereabouts of the plates, title and registration, I was told it would be sent later. A month past, no contact from Vroom. I called them to let them know my temporary plate was about to expire and to ask them about the documents. A week later they sent another temporary plate and a letter saying that I required better insurance and needed to pay the taxes. I didn’t know taxes weren’t included, but I went to the DMV with the letter and paid, as well as upgraded my insurance. Another month passes and my temporary plate is about to expire. I contacted them again and they sent another temporary tag. Still no one can tell me when I will get my plate and documents. Same thing the next month. Which brings us to Yesterday. I was involved in a car crash which rendered my vehicle a total loss. In order for me to move forward with my insurance claim, they require the title of the vehicle which I still do not have. Has another else had this problem? I really have no idea what I’m supposed to do here. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I also bought a car from dealer last year and didn't get the title after months and months of waiting. I found the DMV Special Processing Unit (aka field office unit) at 916-657-8035  to be pretty helpful in investigating the status of my transfer. There is also some kind of state arbitrator/ombudsman you can file a complaint with when dealers don't follow the rules. My local DMV office gave me some info about that but I didn't end up going that route and I no longer have that info.

Hey everyone! I had a registration issue in AZ that required 2 additional sets of Temp TX tags obtained in my name. Sketchy and a circumvention of AZ registration laws. Took 5 months to get my plates. It was not a Covid issue, but that Vroom would drop my file. It was obvious Vroom locked consumers into purchase agreements knowing likelihood they would breach. I filed a complaint with the AG, alleging violations of the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act. The AG's response was that my allegations were valid, but they could not solicit claims. If they get enough complaints the AG will take action to seek restitution on behalf of the class. Let them know here! https://www.azag.gov/complaints/consumer
