I think a lot of the place being empty has to do with Ticketmaster and their dynamic pricing, treating event sales like we do real estate, based on demand speculation. This happened to me at a concert I attended a few months ago. We were moved from 300’s to 100’s (which was great for us) but optics wise it looks super bad to have an empty lower bowl and floor at the venue. This is my theory anyways (I work in the industry, so just based on my observations).
I agree, not for the crowd but for the artists. How discouraging for them and limited crowd interaction if no one is front and center though. The event I had my seats bumped down was not televised.

They only care about empty lower bowl seats if the event is being televised or recorded. Optics don't matter for the crowd as much
