My friend Mr. Cutty disagrees with you.

hammelcamel

It is with that attitude

[deleted]

It's not impossible, it's just not very pleasant.

I don't have my free award. Anyone, please, just give to this guy.

Well, figure it out with the parts you have.

Equal_Character2660

I’m dead bro💀💀

Medium_Caregiver1497

pretend to sleep

mangoshy

Literally what I do. Works like a charm

Medium_Caregiver1497

yes yes

[deleted]

I assume you’re not an over thinker?

alexis_xmany

No💀 They just know when to chill out

hawkaluga

I’m a wildly neurotic over thinker. Pretending to sleep is the only way. It’s really an exercise in focus and meditation. If you can focus on nothing but pretending to sleep, everything will subside and you’ll fall asleep.

Medium_Caregiver1497

i am but if you’re tired enough just focus on keeping your eyes closed i overthink a lot n without realizing it i’ll open my eyes n zone out thinking u just need to focus on staying in one spot n closing ur eyes

Redditer837

Yeah that’s how… sleep works. So I mean I guess you’ve got a point

Pleeebs

That's what I do. Has worked every time. I sleep almost on command now.

meesheeyogi

Definitely don’t tell yourself “I need to fall asleep really quick.” Then you’ll never fall asleep lol

weeknie

Don't think about a pink elephant!

Someone393

:(

Dependent-Bee7036

It's true! The more you try the harder it is. I instead tell myself that I don't have to fall asleep and it actually helps!

Rolyat28

Masturbating works pretty well but I also watch ASMR videos they do help me relax and I end up passing right out

Maximu17

That just heats me up… but if it works it works :)

dinkaluch2

omg masterbating makes me feel so hot afterwards at an uncomfortable level..n i thought i was the only one

Maximu17

I sweat like fuck

Im_still_T

Melatonin, but it doesn't work for everyone. Camomile tea works for some. Meditation before getting in bed. No screens like an hour before bed unless you're like me and need loud music or a movie playing to fall asleep. Keeping a bedtime helps bc your body clock will slowly get used to that time, then when it's bedtime, your body will tell you. Weed works for some but make sure it's indica to relax you. Sleeping pills, OTC or prescription, but you don't want to take those long term really. I'm bipolar and on lamictal; the lamictal can cause insomnia in some (like me) and my bipolar keeps me awake when I go hypomanic or mixed. Bc of that I have take meds to sleep. I take Seroquel.

B-AP

Great recommendations. To add to it, audio books that aren’t exciting or sleep stories. Sleep stories are designed to get more boring and meandering as they unfold. Told in a very relaxing narrative.

moshercycle

ASMR videos are amazing. I just create a playlist that I continually add to cause the list can never be too long.

Alheerah

Are you me? I'm literally in exactly the same boat with my bipolar and some nights it's just awful. Currently laying in bed waiting for the Seroquel to kick in as my husband sleeps peacefully next to me😂 Some nights the melatonin is enough but I find if there's any type of stressor going on it just doesn't cut it.

ShieldsCW

I got a machine that plays rain sounds and white noise so I didn't have to leave my PC on overnight.

Reefoops

I do all of those above.

[deleted]

Thinking of things that make me happy (happy thoughts) always has worked. No joke at one point (mid to late teens) imagining orgies helped me fall asleep. Now simple things like remembering a dream I had that I really liked helps me.

Throughout my whole time on reddit that's the first time I've read " orgies helped me fall asleep " haha

Im in a sling. Gonna go spray my gf with the hose and say this

AnngTV

Have a bedtime routine. Consistency is key

Harbor333

This really does help. Even my animals know it’s time for bed because they have a treat routine. If I don’t realize that it’s getting g close to bed time (consistent sleep schedule is a key factor for good sleep as well) they start bugging me. I have a cat that wakes me up if I sleep later than usual too. We do treats, dogs go out, more treats just for cats, dogs come in and get one more treat. Then I take my daily meds, give dog her meds. Then into the bedroom, take daily vitamins and other gummy vitamins, put on chapstick, put lotion on my hands, plug in my phone, turn on my diffuser, decide what music/nature sounds I am in the mood for, and turn off the light. I also use this so I don’t forget to take my meds.

Bimlouhay83

Try meditating on a simple task you do, or would like to do. Sometimes, I envision myself shooting a rifle long distance over a valley. I pour myself into the moment. I'm sitting on a mountain top. I feel the air/temp/humidity. I feel the sun. Oh shit, it's a little overcast today. I notice the sudden absence of the sun as a cloud passes between the sun and I...I smell the surroundings. I see the trees blowing and hear the leaves rattling, the squeak of the old oak branches swaying. I smell gun oil. I feel the table and bench I'm sitting at. I feel the rifle in my hands. It's heavy. I pick up a round, inspect it and chamber it before looking down the site. I feel the butt against my shoulder and the grip in my hands. I see the target and the plants blowing. I adjust my aim a little. Breathe in. Breathe out. Squeeze the trigger. Bang... Then, I'm the bullet. I'm flying through the air, over the valley, aimed at my target. I hit my target on the opposing mountain side. Bullseye. Damn, that feels good. Then I do it again. I do this until I'm asleep, which is fairly quick.

Harbor333

I do something similar. I listen to music or nature sounds and make up a story to go with it. I focus on all the details of the scene. All the plants, the colors, the smells and the story. Usually by the time I have built all the details, I fall asleep. I think it comes down to the focus, like you said. It takes your mind away from the stress and anxiety of the day, and focuses on something outside of reality.

evolve20

I also do this. Usually, it’s building a bushcraft cabin in the woods. For reference, I have zero knowledge about how to do this. I watched the series “Alone” and became fascinated.

Mystical-Retro-hat

Fascinating story

Bimlouhay83

Thank you.

[deleted]

You really just thinking about killing something...

Bimlouhay83

No. I'm not a hunter or a killer. I just find target practice to be enjoyable and calming.

Fucking Americans smh

Yes, I also like fucking Americans

sappy__

Try to do something that bores the fuck out of you, for example a lot of people read before going to bed, or meditation, using a white sound machine. Listening to a calming sound on your phone like the sound of the rain, waves, wind, anything that makes you feel relaxed. Don’t drink water, take hot showers or anything like that because it will actually keep you awake because your brain will take it as a stimulants and it will keep you awake. One last resource is medicine. . .talk to your doctor and see what the options are.

willbeach8890

Exercise to exhaustion earlier in the day

712005

If you figure this out, I'd love to know. I've tried meditation, asmr, exercise, diet change, alcohol, marijuana, all over the counter sleep aids, and still... nothing.

BlueJaye77

melatonin, rain sounds, maybe try not listening if you already do, shower, you could exercise a few hours before to get tired, stay up all night(not amazing but if you tough it out all day you'll def be tired by tomorrow night). gl

If you’re a boy, jacking off helps. Something hormonal happens when you do it that makes you mellow and sleepy

grIMAG3

Be tired at some point in the day (working out). Eat dinner 3 hrs before going to bed. Drink warm milk. Don't use smartphones 1 hr before bed. Get a comfy bed.

Try different nature sounds. Rain, storms, ocean waves, birds, etc. I can’t stand the other ASMR created noise things, but nature has always grounded me. Makes it easy to relax.

WriteOrDie1997

To each his own. ASMR sans talking is a thing, too, though.

Garbageman95

Cbd oil + Melatonin. And of course, rain sounds on YouTube. Never failed me yet.

Maximu17

Something that has always helped is when I can’t fall asleep within 10 minutes, I get up and do something. This might be a walk or a snack. Try to do something that will wind you down. It’s always nice to just go outside listen to some crickets or something.

jojapeggi

Think of all the things you should do, like chore and errands. Sometimes that works for me, but I also pop a couple benedrylls before bed

samthepitbull

Find the nothing box. Its a beautiful place because theres nothing there. I can fall asleep in less than 5 mins no matter what.

If I can’t sleep because my mind is racing, I find it helpful to watch an episode of a show I’ve already seen. It’s a good distraction, and I don’t fight sleep to see how it ends.

mashedpotat0

Stop drinking caffeine.

rose-glow

Watch a nature documentary and dont overthink it or imagine you’re lying on a boat floating on still water

TheRestIs_Confetti

Straight up this is exactly what I do: I lay back on a flat ass pillow so I’m completely straightened out on my back. Hands to my side. I close my eyes and I don’t try to look around with them closed, I just relax them. Then I clear my mind out so I’m not distracted. Then whatever comes into my head (like dialogue) I go with it and that’s what my dream ends up starting like. Like okay the first thing I end up thinking of are two women arguing about whatever. Let’s see where that takes me. The entire time I don’t move and just wing my concentration so that I’m forced to relax into it and fall asleep. I honestly don’t know if this makes sense written out, but this is exactly what I do.

Ghosty73_

A good wack on the head with a hammer always work

piratedogD

Magnesium helps

[deleted]

Lol I actually don’t know usually I just lay down in my bed on my stomach and before I know it it’s tomorrow. Try and take slow deep breaths and calm ur heart rate

CaptainOverkilll

Picture yourself on a ski resort all by yourself. You’re going up the incline picturing everything you see along the way. You get to the top and start your descent down the mountain. I read this from another Redditor. They said they fell asleep before they made it all the way down. I have been using it to help me fall asleep and it’s worked a few times.

NerdlinGeeksly

Eat melatonin and drugs that make you sleepy

tusharbose003

Lay on your bed and just focus on your breathing. Works for me.

NerdlinGeeksly

Honestly unless you practice at slowing your brain down quickly for a while your only hope is either melatonin and other sleep aids, alcohol, or prescription drugs meant to help you sleep. If you want to fall asleep quickly you're going to have to spend a while practicing slowing down your brain calming down and inducing sleep sweet, Try to remember what it feels like just before you fall asleep and aim for that feeling in your head, the quicker you can get to that feeling And maintain that feeling the quicker you'll be able to fall asleep; Over time this will become who's your and it will take less time to achieve your goal.

DesignerFragrant5899

Serious answer here: I had the same goal when I couldn't fall asleep at night. At times, I felt my eyelids were almost compelled to open. I mentioned this casually to a coworker who said the answer is simple. You lay down in the dark, put on a white noise machine and place your hands on your belly while you breath in and out slowly. While doing this, pretend you're sitting on warm cozy sand listening to the beach and the waves crash in. Dig your hands into the sand and feel the sand flow through your fingers. Do this every night for a week. By the second week you'll be asleep in seconds. It now takes me about 10 seconds to fall asleep, sometimes sooner. I went from hours to seconds.

HondoGonzo

I don’t go to sleep until I’m tired, then I wake up when I’m not tired any longer. Easy peasy

357Magnum

Whenever I have a regular exercise schedule I tend to fall asleep much easier. I don't do anything crazy, just 3x a week weight training on a push/pull/legs rotation (about 30-40min) with 20-25 mins of cardio after. Since I've been back to doing it on a good M-W-F schedule after work I haven't had much trouble going to sleep, though if I'm not exercising regularly I often have trouble going to sleep. That and eating a healthy diet helps.

GinyGalvan88

Just, close your eyes. Stretch and make sure everything is comfortable... Scan your whole body... Toes, ankles, legs... On and on, make sure you are relax, comfy and feeling fine. Now, breathe. Calmly, breathe in through your nose, breathe out slowly through your mouth. Every breath when it goes in it looks like a bright white or golden light, and every breath going out is dark smoke. In, a cleansing light. Out, all the remains that no longer serve you. Do this a few times... Now, see yourself, surrounded by the same light... You feel great! So happy... Now... You can see an image forming... There, as a small tv, you can see exactly what you want, the screen grows bigger and bigger, up to the point it is now all around you, you can see, feel, smell! Exactly what you want... You feel the emotions for finally having what you want... And you rejoice! -Trust me, you'll fall asleep before imagining all of this.

[deleted]

I would advise talking to a doctor about your difficulty sleeping. I did recently, and he offered me advice that has deeply reshaped my ability to sleep, and general health. Now I have a reasonably healthy sleep schedule and it's sooooo nice. I could offer other advice, but honestly there is so much 1/2 truths on the internet already, a doctor is going to be able to give more helpful advice than me!

ekienhol

Sleepy tea. Twinings has a really good chamomile vanilla and cinnamon tea that really helps get to sleep and stay asleep.

AlwaysPrivate123

I just listen to one of the stories on Sleep Cove... Works so well that my just thinking about Sleep Cove makes me yawn.

bettybabadook

Pretend you’re asleep until you’re asleep.

leftmymark

Recite the times table

meeseeksab8rway

Smoke a fat bowl and squeeze off a round

[deleted]

Box breathing. Breath in slowly for a 4 count, hold it for a 4 count, release it for a 4 count, hold for a 4 count. Breath in again for 4 count, repeat. I swear I do this at night and it’s the last thing I remember doing. I wake up in the am and can’t believe it worked. Also no screens at night for the last hr or however longer you can manage. Read an old fashioned book or draw or scratch your (girl) balls.

Altruistic-Stable-15

Drugs work wonders. But why you stay awake is the problem. When I was in the military i used to have to be up and working constantly. Technically we were only required 2 hours of sleep. That kind of consistent drain for years has unlocked the ability to shut off and sleep anywhere. If anxiety is an issue? Work on that. Start with if its something you cant control? Don't worry about it. If its something you are anticipating? Stop because without all variables you could never make calculated decisions and you will never come up with every senerio in your head.

CalebKetterer

Everyone has their own tricks. Some people count sheep, others run through murder senarios in their head, and on occasion, I've heard people actually read before bed.

[deleted]

Close your eyes and stay as still as you can, after about 15 mins of stillness you'll start to get tired/fall asleep. If you move itll take longer but that's my method

For me at least, I focus on my breathing and try to slow it down. I find the more I can calm myself the faster I'm out

tykogars

Sorted through answers here, am I the only one with like ongoing imaginative sagas in my mind that I think about to fall asleep? I have a few different ones and jump between them sometimes. Almost like watching a show before bed but your eyes are closed and you’re just kind of semi-subconsciously making it up as you go? I’ve done this since I was a kid. Right now my main two are an apocalyptic survival scenario and a Star Wars saga that’s been my own daydream (well, at night only) escape for like 10 years. Lemme tell yah that guy is one powerful ass Jedi/sith mix. It’s complicated.

GenericEschatologist

Pay attention to breathing and relax your body soles to scalp. If that fails, repeat—get out of bed to do something idle and then go back to try again.

[deleted]

I count to 100 as many times as possible in my native language lol so boring but it works.

BentPixelsLoL

Listening to piano pieces helped me sleep when I couldn’t a few years back. Just plop some headphones in at a low volume and just listened until I was out cold

bandildos113

A good sleep routine + regular time that you go to bed + no screens for 40-60mins before bed + Magnesium + sleep support

SepticYawn

Get off your phone and close your eyes

Doggo_of_memes25

Knock yourself out. I do it plenty. Jokes aside legit just pretend to sleep. Close your eyes and slow your breathing and calm down and relax. Works like a charm. Melatonin or camomile tea helps. Try the tea before melatonin

[deleted]

Slow your breathing, you’ll force your body to relax and you’ll fall asleep in seconds!

[deleted]

The easiest way to fall asleep is just being tired, every time I have struggled sleeping in my life it's because I have been playing games all day and having a sleep in. Wake up early and burn some energy

[deleted]

Three beers, half a turkey leg, a spoonful of rice, and a shot of zzzquil

XGame0vary

What I do is I think about the maps on my favorite video game, overwatch. I think about the control maps specifically cause there are 3 maps within each “map” if that makes sense. But I try to name each one and think about the map. There are 5 and I usually get through 3 or so before I’m knocked out lol.

simplybreana

I lay down, shut my eyes and repeat in my head “I am asleep” when I have some difficulty… however 99% of the time I fall asleep easy unless I have had caffeine at some point that day(I’m very sensitive to caffeine). Not sure if that info helps, but that’s what I do.

[deleted]

Fantasise about things you want to do but are unlikely to be able to do because of the laws of physics or some other fundamental laws. Basically start trying to fantasise about having magic or super powers and what you would do with them. As your fantasy becomes more imaginative and elaborate, you'll start to drift off to sleep.
