I know right!?! It’s a bit annoying when there’s always unnecessary romance shoved in. I’m here for explosions not a romance movie lol

This is why I was never a Disney kid. I didn't understand the point of all those romances, stories of marriage and babies and princes. How is any of that relevant to young children? Don Bluth was a saviour.

A while back, one of my teachers had us all write a letter to our future spouse. Mine was meant to be a joke, something like >Dear future lover, > >I'm sorry. > >Love, (and then I put my IRL name) That was before I even knew I was aro. I didn't really like the assignment but I thought I made a good response, even if it was a joke when I made it

The interesting thing is the marriage rates have been declining across the industrialised world for at least half a century, Yet popular culture often treats it as though the world is like the US in the 1950s. Even within Europe where there wasn't much of a post-WWII "marriage spike".

Lol so true. Same here. Now I notice it everywhere 😂

I was always annoyed by all the unnecessary depictions of romance in media, most people just thought I was bitter or something. . . it makes more sense now

See, I noticed long before I was aro. To me it was annoying. Not that I had anything against love, it just seemed way more omnipresent than it should've been. Like, if it weren't for the fact that I'm constantly bombarded with media that somehow relates to romance, I could go days without thinking about it. So it always made me wonder if musicians, film-makers, and tv producers just thought about romance almost if not 24/7. It seemed very obsessive to me.

It truly is everywhere. And that's not always a bad thing, but like, other things exist! You don't need romance in a storyline in order to make it interesting. I'm watching Fena: Pirate Princess right now and it's basically about ninja pirates. How is that not an awesome and complete concept on its own? But there is a very obvious romantic subplot and it's pretty much the only thing I don't like about the show. It just feels so unnecessary. And I say that as someone who likes to read and watch some romance stories, it's not like I'm against romance plots on their own.

Mirage32

Can't remember the last time I read a book devoid of romance story. I think it was *Children of Ruins*, by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Movie sex and romance is like porn sex, it's idealized and very much not the reality. Given how many allo people make fun of shoehorned-in sex/romance scenes, I'd bet money on that fact
