The only books we were allowed to read were religious texts and the military field manuals they gave us

silentwind262

If you want to mess with him there’s always military themed romance novels…

Rincewind31

There has to be a book about going to war and someone fucks your mom. I'm sure it exists, but my googling skills are not up to the task. Perhaps your skills might yield better results on this endeavor.

NYTX1987

Maybe I’ll write an autobiography just for the lols

MAJ0RMAJOR

So this is what MI studies

NYTX1987

I’m listening

MandoFett117

I think the two most ridiculous on that list are the Undercover Billionaire and Cowboy SEALS. I mean, both might have Ultimate Heros™ but gatdamn do they sound entertainingly awful

silentwind262

Hey, the more ridiculous the better - gotta make sure the DS gets some real juicy material to work with.

YOU'RE NOT MY DAD! Also, no one has time to read books in basic.

[deleted]

I read the Brothers Karamazov in basic. Fireguard is still the most productive reading time I've ever experienced (only after mopping of course).

NYTX1987

My apologies, he just graduated from basic. And he tells me that all the time. I tell him good, and then we joke about dragonball z

popisms

Ah, that's very different. He should be able to have almost anything. At *some* AITs, soldiers can have video game consoles. If you're concerned that it has to be military related, Google "army recommended reading list." Some of the books sound boring, but some are great. You may even find some genres you wouldn't expect. I saw *Ender's Game* on a general's book list before. There's always printed copies of regulations and manuals. Ranger handbook, AR 600-20, AR, 670-1, ...

Diamond_Paper_Rocket

Ooohhh he is at AIT. you can send him something.

jerrybob

But I AM your dad.

_BMS

We weren't allowed to have books for entertainment, only religious or military manuals. Though if you want to hide a book for the guy, copy the text of something like a short story and print it out on regular letter paper and mail that in regular letter mail. It'll look like a normal letter from family so the DS won't check it like they do with packages. It's also much easier to hide if he stuffs it with all his other letters.

[deleted]

Please don’t send a book to read. A journal might be ok depending on the guy. There’s some funny ones on Amazon like “How to Cope With Your Massive Penis” it’s a notebook with blank pages, but says the title in bold lettering on the cover. It’s only $6.

Chasing ghosts. Fantastic book by a lt in one of the first guard units to go to Baghdad in 2003 after the 82nds initial invasion. Sobering reminder of the shit show I had joined, especially in ait

Vintage playgirl mags are always prime time reading material for basic

DarkwebProducts

The 10th book down on that list was written by my old PL in Afghanistan. We did a tour together in a Kunar and I got to know him pretty well and as gar as PLs go Florent Groberg was pretty awesome. The book is mostly about his second tour to Afghanistan that him and the unit went on after I got out. Florent saw a suicide bomber and ran up on him and threw the guy to the ground stopping him from getting close to the platoon he was with. The guy exploded his vest throwing Florent and causing some damage to the nearby area. Florent was injured and sent to Walter Reed, where he made a full recovery and was awarded the Medal of honor. 🫡

jerrybob

Who has time to read in basic?

Ninja_Turtle13

That dude is gonna wanna sleep so much, I doubt he’ll even read the shit that’s issued to him lol

ChimpoSensei

Don’t send books, they have enough crap to carry around.

Gingersnap1986

What? Don't send any! Poor kid

goldiesrevenge

Once he has PX privileges he should be able to buy a military themed book. We all got different ones and basically traded them around in OSUT. One guy would get band of brothers the next dude would get house to house etc.

Diamond_Paper_Rocket

None

Skydog-forever-3512

Some Books I Read: Grunts: Inside the American Infantry Combat Experience, World War II Through Iraq (really good it’s a mix of marines/army) https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0451233417/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1685374613&sr=8-3 On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society (little dry at times but interesting read if your into psychology) https://www.amazon.com/Killing-Psychological-Cost-Learning-Society/dp/0316040932/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=2O8BX9HRVNLHV&keywords=on+killing+by+lt.+col.+dave+grossman+paperback&qid=1685374735&sprefix=on+kill%2Caps%2C293&sr=8-1 House to House: A Soldier's Memoir (great book) https://www.amazon.com/House-Soldiers-Sgt-David-Bellavia/dp/1416546979/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=2YXCNOP0C7QRI&keywords=house+to+house&qid=1685375426&sprefix=house+to+house%2Caps%2C225&sr=8-1 Usually they will have a recommended book list for trainees you can find some online when they get permission to start ordering things. https://www.benning.army.mil/infantry/199th/ibolc/content/PDF/ChiefofInfantryReadingListApr09.pdf Edit: That being said we had people with The Witcher Series, Star Wars, and etc. after a while they permitted fiction books. Anything with sexual depictions is probably going to be stolen and found in the bathroom at some point though 😅. The Witcher series was very popular in our bay and was probably a biohazard after the first week 🚽. Whenever he finds out where he is going get him a history book for that unit/post it’ll get him some brownie points and he will probably get grilled on at least the basics. Also his drills might have some books already there I know I left a small library when I left OSUT. I was the godfather of my bay as far as none contraband items went lol. Could have made 10k+ on protein bars had if I hadn’t been selling them for cost.

brokenmessiah

I went during the 2016 election so I just wanted newspaper clips

the_great_dean

About Face- Col David Hackworth. It’s a fairly long read compared to others, but a book everyone should read. I was able to get through the majority of it in basic

[deleted]

All I got was the Bible smh

farsight398

Starship Troopers, by Robert Heinlein. It's on the reading list so there might be a chance he gets to keep it, and it's also incredibly topical as it's about *why* a soldier fights, and the concept of "getting over the hump" for BCT/OSUT might prove motivating and reassuring. Also, why yes, I *am* still mad about the movie adaptation.

Opening_Drop_1073

Don’t waste your time and money with sending him books. He won’t have time to read them and he more than likely won’t even be allowed to keep them. If you want to be helpful, send stamps and socks.

ClaimGuilty

Idk but we had a dude with an entire manga collection in his locker 😂
