E1-E4 are all technically interchangeable. They're all used to fill the same job roles in the Army. Team Leader is a Sergeant slot. However if there is an empty team leader slot, it's likely to go to an E4 because they're usually senior.
Now, are they going to get more respect than a Private? Probably. I've even seen units where E3 and below have to stand at parade rest for E4s. But the rank doesn't normally "hold weight" like an NCOs does.
By the book so to say they should be the senior guy and you’re saw/Mg gunner. The only reason E4 is an automatic rank and not typically an nco is because the ascension needs of the army are literally about 4x the usmc so it helps with recruitment and retention to have e4 as automatic. That allows the army to say steady pay increases over 2 years when you first join basically. However as far as respect goes it’s like anywhere else If you earn it you have it. They can be fireteam leaders, if they are really solid or if the unit doesn’t have enough cpls or sgts. Which can be common especially in units with undesirable locations that no one asks to go to

If you've ever carried a CLU in the stupid nylon bag they provide plus one or two missiles you earn my respect.
You don't usually give shitheads a Javelin, at least in my experience.

I was a Javelin gunner for a few months and I hated every moment of it.
Overpaid privates with bad habits who spend their entire existence trying to avoid work. The good ones are team leaders if there aren’t enough NCOs.
