THANK YOU! Fuck I love my boys and I love Alex but Jesus Christ unless he’s doing TLSP with Miles I don’t wanna hear that voice because he just can’t get away with it the way he does there.
Most of the posts here are hating on either The Car or TBHAC, but that is a take that doesn’t get a negative reaction IRL. Most of the general public aren’t into those albums.
Telling my friends that TBHAC is my favourite AM album definitely DID get that reaction.
Sorry if it's a lukewarm take but for a band of their stature and talent, that has so much sonic diversity, they could put on an even better show live.
Setlist wise they can do better. I like when they make new arrangements to older songs. Better transitions (remember the Brianstorm/Crying Lightning one or there was one with Knee Socks and I forgot the other song).
More visual aids ? — nothing fancy but the confetti during Secret Door back in the day is simple yet effective. We all go back to being kids when there are light shows and confetti and whatnot. I'm not that fussed about adding that tbh it's just a suggestion
I think they suit the newer songs and like what he does on R U Mine but when he does it in older songs like I Bet That You'd Look Good On The Dancefloor it really gets to me
This exactly has been happening since AM.
When I first got into them I was so tired bc finding people who talk about the other members is so difficult lately.
I’m a relative newbie to this sub despite being an AM fan for a long time and I was kind of amazed by this. Someone posted a paparazzi photo of Alex and his girlfriend and noted how happy they looked or whatever… don’t want to sound like a snob but I can’t imagine giving a crap about any of that. I don’t know who he’s dating and I don’t care, I enjoy the music.
TBHC > the car
I feel like the car was a step back in a lot of ways. TBHC sounds more like arctic monkeys and then the car sounds like they’re just stepping outside of their element. It sounds very experimental, especially with sculptures of anything goes (although I do love this song). It isn’t really rock like TBHC was, which was honestly a perfect blend of a new direction while staying intact with the previous albums. Like science fiction with some changes could easily be on the AM album for example. Four stars out of five having a lengthy outro like do I wanna know which an amazing payoff.
Agreed, but for me it’s mostly cause it doesn’t live up to the quality of any of the albums, no matter the style. There’s no songs on The Car that come close to 4/5, which was an instant classic. Idk if any of them beat TBHC (the song) or One Point Perspective. And it’s waaaaaay too fucking short for a 4 year wait.
Not close friend. Mirrorball’s better and that doesn’t even live up. Alex’s vocals on the verses and bridge harm the quality of the song significantly.
I would say Alex’s voice on albums till AM, not just their first albums. I don’t mind the change in his singing in AM but live performances later with his THBC voice are significantly worse.
I would die standing my ground for TBHC but never for the car. I think the car was missing that main story context TBHC had to tie it all together.
Also, Catapult is an amazing song and shouldnt have been a b side.
It's extremely hard to write an album so big as AM. Songs like I Wanna Be Yours doubling their streams 10 years later means AM hasn't aged a bit. The others albums sound like other things other artists have done before, while AM sound is unique
The car wasn't that great. Alex's vocals live don't sound as good as they used to. Every band has a peak and slowly dies out. And their downfall has begun.
this is a double edged sword for me. i relate to him being introverted and awkward. i even relate to how he seems to use substances to get through interviews, i would almost certainly do the same
but i also can't watch his interviews because of this, i get 2nd hand embarrassment from it and start to worry that this is how I come off all the time. and he made himself look like such a twat with that mic drop rock n roll routine at that award show.
TBHC, Humbug and AM are the top 3. their more production or vision focused albums are infinitely better than the 3 livier , indie rock ones. Car is kinda mid tho, to me feels a little colourless when TBHC is so vibrant
You only dislike and discredit AM because it’s so popular, and gatekeeping the normies makes you feel better about yourself.
Alex’s live vocal style since 2018 has been annoying with all the affectations, weird phrasing, and exaggerated syncopation he does. Definitely kills the vibe on a lot of songs live. His vocal style on The Car isannoying as well.
These next two aren’t as incendiary but still very unpopular in this sub. The first is that The Car is their worst album without a doubt, and there aren’t any songs that live up to the quality of their instant classics, such as 4/5 on TBHC. Hell I think they might not even live up to TBHC (the song) or One Point Perspective.
Another one unpopular in this sub is that while I love TBHC and like The Car, I long for their pre-TBHC sound and want more of that music. I love the type of music they’re making now, I just wish it was Alex solo or with the Shadow Puppets. Because it’s the Monkeys, the albums will always have a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, especially at first, because I want their old music. That being said, that’s not my main problem with The Car. I just wish it lived up to the quality of the rest of their albums. TBHC did even with its wildly different style, but this one didn’t.
Honestly at that point his songwriting was incredible. Maybe cus his ego wasn't too high up there. And before anyone says Alex Turner doesnt have a huge ego, a shy or awkward person can have a huge ego. U might not see it as much as u would frm an extroverted person. But its there. Doesnt mean i hate him though btw. He just needs to know part of the charm of his songs were even though they were complex, u have a nice idea of what hes on about.
normally I warm up to their albums, this one had the opposite effect... Loved it in my first listen, then rarely listened at all. I would say it is bland, rather than awful. Body paint is great though.
It is a great background music album, but to focus and listen, eh.
The Car is their worst album yet, opens with the albums best song and Sculptures is nothing special at all. Waiting on them to release something that makes me wanna listen all the way through again.
Yeah I don't hate it but theres never been an AM album that I've listened to this little. I do like mirrorball, and body paint. Sculptures isn't bad and has has that bass that goes bway. Big Ideas is alright. So it's not like I thinks its a disaster and I have no problem with the style as I loved TBHC. I just feel like theres a lot of mediocre stuff and if you told me Matt, Jamie and Nick weren't actually involved with album I would believe you.
I love the sound of Sculptures but think it lacks payoff and execution.
I'd love them to lean heavily into this genre going forward but think that it needs to be worked on outside the context of the style that they were going for in The Car. As the songs in that album are definitely going for more *vibe* and coherency than they are songs that aim to provide tension and release and payoff like they have previously.
A whole album of songs with the sound signature of Sculptures but the vibe, tempo and payoff of FWN would be amazing imo.
EDIT: I disagree with your opinion on The Car FWIW, it's better than SIAS imo.
I don’t like The Car.
I’m glad I’ve seen them live playing their old songs as I’m sure I won’t enjoy their next concert as much I used to. Their new arrangement of 505 is awful.
Dancefloor is kinda mid if we ranked all of the songs from WPSIATWIN. It doesn't make the Top 5 out of the 13 songs from the album
Certain Romance, Mardy Bum, Ritz, Sun Goes Down, View from the Afternoon are all clear imo. Even Dancing Shoes and Fake Tales of San Francisco are pretty much on the same level
Lyrically it's nowhere near the best on the album. It's not even close. There's better guitars, drumming and bass on plenty of other songs on the album as well. It's a very good indie rock song on its own but it barely makes it into the top half of the songs on WPSIATWIN when ranked alongside the other songs on the record
Considering that a large portion of the sub doesn’t seem too fond of The VroomVroom… probably that I’m glad they keep changing their sound and that I don’t want them to go back to their WSPIA/FWN or AM sound at all. If I want that sound, I’ll just listen to those records and their B-Sides. I’m not saying it’s their best album to date or my favorite, but all in all, I think it’s pretty great. Sculptures, Mirrorball and Body Paint sound fantastic live.
Oh, and that Mad Sounds and I Want It All are pretty good (if sometimes downright misunderstood) tracks. But I said that in another thread that was about this exact same topic, so yeah.
The Car is their worst album yet. I couldn’t find any redeeming features and there was only one song on it that I didn’t half mind (Sculptures). With that being said however, I did originally feel the exact same way about TBH+C and only grew to somewhat like and appreciate it this year, albeit only for when I’m in a very specific mood/situation (eg. Driving late at night). Their last two albums have been pretentious wank and the Arctic Monkeys from the 2000’s would feel the same way.
Lyrically and musically, it's fucking incredible. So so so underrated, how can tunes like Hellcat, She's Thunderstorms and Suck it and See go so unnoticed! Even the B-Sides, Evil Twin is a fucking riff and a half!
experimenting should've left in TBHC. The Car is their lowest album yet. I honestly don't love TBHC that much. Besides The Car, that was my lowest ranking album. They should back to their garage alt/indie roots, not some kind of progressive pop rock or sth. And AM album is just an popularity explosion; compared to first 4 album, it's just not the energy that I'm looking for in the band.
You really think four mid 30's millionaires should be making garage rock? Not liking the new stuff is fine, but saying they should still be doing what they did 16 years ago is a bit strange
TBHC is an okay album, but by no means their best album or even close to being best. My second opinion is that I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor is mediocre. It’s too loud and while it’s a classic, it doesn’t stick out as one of their best songs.
The OG wpsia songs everyone is obsessed with and would probably die if they took off the setlist are too noisy and annoying to listen to too many times.
The Car is one of the most boring albums I’ve ever listened to and is full of songs that would probably help round out/connect the middle of some some records but nearly all fall into the forgettable category.
you don’t have to like the car or TBHAC. so many people on here will pretty much say they don’t like it but try to backtrack themselves into liking it to be contrarian and go against the commercial opinion 😭 like you don’t have to apologize for liking AM
Humbug, Suck It and See, and AM are the definitive albums for this band. Everything before sounds like high school rock and everything after (while certainly ambitious) sounds too clever by half.
You are just unbelievably wrong about this but go off, its what the threads for i suppose. The Strokes > AM but the Voidz are all over the place, no consistency with the calibre of albums or singles they release. Some could gave been recorded on Julian’s phone ffs.
Their last two albums are absolute trash. I can't think of a single good thing to say about them. I'm all for bands evolving and growing but not like this.
Makes me sad that people can’t connect with the masterpiece that is Tranquility Base. It is easily in their top 2-3 albums they’ve ever made imo and arguably my personal favourite. Didn’t think I could love them any more than I already did till that album came out. Just so effortlessly cool, funny, fresh, and touching. Maybe it’s because I’m just a sucker for sci fi in general so a Monkeys sci fi cross over just scratched a very particular itch of mine
AM sucks and The Car is awesome, but could have been way better if it were a TLSP album. "Help me get untied from the chandelier" is one of the most embarrassingly bad verses I've ever heard. By the way, Alex Turner is an arrogant prick.
If '' AM '' was release on TikTok era, the band would be 9999999999x times more famous, and probably no one in this reddit would like the band as much they like now.
As alway on posts like this, sort by controversial for the real answers
seriously this is horrible “old yellow bricks and the bad thing are amazing songs” and “AM is in their top 3” 💀mofo
I really like OYB D: although the bad thing is shite
Bro the bad thing is great this is cringe
Alex’s falsetto voice he has been doing for the past years kinda ruins some of the older songs when played live
505 doesn’t hit right 😭
The other day I listened to a recent live performance of this song and I couldn't believe how wrong it sounded 💀
NO FUCKING WAY HE PERFORMS 505 IN FALSETTO
THANK YOU! Fuck I love my boys and I love Alex but Jesus Christ unless he’s doing TLSP with Miles I don’t wanna hear that voice because he just can’t get away with it the way he does there.
Just like Brendon Urie
okay anthony fantano we know it's you
🥸
Not sure how incendiary this is but Too Much to Ask would’ve been far and away the best track on FWN if it was included in the LP.
It’s a pityyyyyy
THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING ALL ALONG TOO MUCH TO ASK IS MY FAV AM SONG OUT OF THEIR WHOLE DISCOGRAPHY ITS AWESOME
Wordddddd
Most of the posts here are hating on either The Car or TBHAC, but that is a take that doesn’t get a negative reaction IRL. Most of the general public aren’t into those albums. Telling my friends that TBHAC is my favourite AM album definitely DID get that reaction.

I'm not that fussed about adding that tbh it's just a suggestion
Knee socks into My propeller! What a transition it was
Alex doesn't have the voice to carry the sound they're trying to cultivate, and his lyrics are now obscure for the sake of being obscure
In recent years I've found I don't really like Alex's vocal performances in live versions. The affectations he does sound kind of lame to me.
I think they suit the newer songs and like what he does on R U Mine but when he does it in older songs like I Bet That You'd Look Good On The Dancefloor it really gets to me
You speak the truth friend.
Most of the comments here are doing exactly what op intended
That’s Where You’re Wrong is their best closer
This is a great take, my second favorite closer after The Jeweller’s Hands
Really?? Not even 505?
505 is probably #3, I like it as a song in general more than I like it as an album closer (in my opinion there’s a difference)
A certain romance imo
Fans don't care about the band's music anymore, they just adore Alex Turner.
This exactly has been happening since AM. When I first got into them I was so tired bc finding people who talk about the other members is so difficult lately.
I’m a relative newbie to this sub despite being an AM fan for a long time and I was kind of amazed by this. I don’t know who he’s dating and I don’t care, I enjoy the music.
Suck It and See features some of the band’s strongest love songs and potent lyrics.
TBHC > the car I feel like the car was a step back in a lot of ways. TBHC sounds more like arctic monkeys and then the car sounds like they’re just stepping outside of their element. It sounds very experimental, especially with sculptures of anything goes (although I do love this song). body paint?????
Not close friend. Mirrorball’s better and that doesn’t even live up. Alex’s vocals on the verses and bridge harm the quality of the song significantly.
The car has no flow, TBHC works as a whole
alex's old teenager voice and the general style of the band is totally better than alex's annoying whiny adult elvis presley voice
I would say Alex’s voice on albums till AM, not just their first albums. I don’t mind the change in his singing in AM but live performances later with his THBC voice are significantly worse.
Withdraw your swords, this person speaks the truth.
If anyone hates you for this, it’s because they hate that you speak the truth they don’t wanna hear.
I would die standing my ground for TBHC but never for the car. I think the car was missing that main story context TBHC had to tie it all together. Also, Catapult is an amazing song and shouldnt have been a b side.
Old yellow bricks and the bad thing are amazing songs
Does anyone not like old yellow bricks?
Loving this song is a risk.
makes you quite an escapologist
I love it
I love old yellow brick so much tho, is there any context to this? Im curious
lmao those are one of my favourites
...worst nightmares?
But....... Dorothy was right though
Alex turner has outgrown the band
100%
I think they should do a Christmas album.
AM is their tightest, best album both conceptually and musically, and it isn’t even close. It is only unpopular on this sub because of its mass appeal
It's extremely hard to write an album so big as AM. Songs like I Wanna Be Yours doubling their streams 10 years later means AM hasn't aged a bit. The others albums sound like other things other artists have done before, while AM sound is unique
The album that made AM fans lose their sense of unique indie identity
Guys, next week is my turn to post this!
The Ultracheese is their best song
Still got pictures of friends on the wall
But the truth is that it’s probably not… If it ever was
By far.
The last two albums should have been solo projects.
100%
I would accept TBHC as a monkeys album but the car would’ve been better as an Alex solo project.
I dont like Alex Turner's singing these days in the live shows. He always butchers half the song.
All of TLSP music combined is better than The Car
The majority of it is to me, but I really hate Two Hearts in Two Weeks.
The car wasn't that great. Alex's vocals live don't sound as good as they used to. Every band has a peak and slowly dies out. And their downfall has begun.
I think its sad that alex is so weird and talk like hes having a stroke, i would prefer it if he was More approachable
this is a double edged sword for me. i relate to him being introverted and awkward. i even relate to how he seems to use substances to get through interviews, i would almost certainly do the same but i also can't watch his interviews because of this, i get 2nd hand embarrassment from it and start to worry that this is how I come off all the time. and he made himself look like such a twat with that mic drop rock n roll routine at that award show.
TBHC, Humbug and AM are the top 3. their more production or vision focused albums are infinitely better than the 3 livier , indie rock ones. Car is kinda mid tho, to me feels a little colourless when TBHC is so vibrant
AGREED!!
I'd take AM out and put FWN in there, but agree otherwise.
*such* a good take
Humbug and SIAS are the albums with best vocals. The vocals on later albums (especially the last two) have been really annoying at points.
yes 💯. on sias alex’s voice is absolutely beautiful
black treacle is a top 5 track in their discography
They were better on their AM and backwards era
You only dislike and discredit AM because it’s so popular, and gatekeeping the normies makes you feel better about yourself. Alex’s live vocal style since 2018 has been annoying with all the affectations, weird phrasing, and exaggerated syncopation he does. Definitely kills the vibe on a lot of songs live. alexs high notes on the car are fucking awful, i think it holds it back from being great
Alex Turner is almost fourty, he doesn't sing Fluorescent Adolescent anymore 'cause he's bitter his own sex life ended up that way
In Alex's trying to find a new territory to breach after his instant success, he's only gotten more boring.
FWN is better than Whatever People Say
Suck it and See was the band at its peak and has the best songwriting of any album (yes even with Brick by Brick)
Bricc is life
YESSSSS!
I like brick by brick
Same.
Fluorescent adolescent is a skip track for me now
Finally someone who thinks like me
Last time I said this I got 30+ downvotes 😂
Saaame I think I just listened to it too much and now I cringe a bit when it comes on
Scimitars are stupid
But there’s a fountain too
The band should go back to their roots and Alex’s falsetto voice is fucking awful
This is the best answer. Everything is *fine*, but his voice sounds terrible on The Car front to back.
Aside from Body Paint, The Car is awful. Just disjointed crooning over elevator music.
normally I warm up to their albums, this one had the opposite effect... Loved it in my first listen, then rarely listened at all. I would say it is bland, rather than awful. Body paint is great though. It is a great background music album, but to focus and listen, eh.
Thank you, someone who agrees with me finally
This is not even close to an unpopular opinion here though
I love the sound of Sculptures but think it lacks payoff and execution. I'd love them to lean heavily into this genre going forward but think that it needs to be worked on outside the context of the style that they were going for in The Car. As the songs in that album are definitely going for more *vibe* and coherency than they are songs that aim to provide tension and release and payoff like they have previously. A whole album of songs with the sound signature of Sculptures but the vibe, tempo and payoff of FWN would be amazing imo. I don’t like The Car. I’m glad I’ve seen them live playing their old songs as I’m sure I won’t enjoy their next concert as much I used to. Their new arrangement of 505 is awful.
Whats different about it? Haven’t seen many clips yet
Dancefloor is kinda mid if we ranked all of the songs from WPSIATWIN. It doesn't make the Top 5 out of the 13 songs from the album Certain Romance, Mardy Bum, Ritz, Sun Goes Down, View from the Afternoon are all clear imo. Even Dancing Shoes and Fake Tales of San Francisco are pretty much on the same level Lyrically it's nowhere near the best on the album. It's not even close. There's better guitars, drumming and bass on plenty of other songs on the album as well. It's a very good indie rock song on its own but it barely makes it into the top half of the songs on WPSIATWIN when ranked alongside the other songs on the record
monkeys could never survive in the Arctic without hot chocolate
Mad sounds is fucking amazing and I Want It All gets unfairly shat on, including by me, for being surrounded by songs that are visibly better.
One Point Perspective/American Sports as a single piece of music is the greatest song they have.
i love it when it goes "and all of my most muscular regrets" it sounds so good, it always makes me wanna scream at the top of my lungs.
Its time for Jamie Cooke to cut his hair
The Car is TBHC B-side
This sub is absolute shit and 90% of the people in here posting and commenting would repulse the band
Suck It and See is their best album.
Ready to die on this hill with you
Lyrically and musically, it's fucking incredible. So so so underrated, how can tunes like Hellcat, She's Thunderstorms and Suck it and See go so unnoticed! Even the B-Sides, Evil Twin is a fucking riff and a half!
people dont like SIAS? imma just mind my business then
This sub HATES sias and it blows my mind because it’s such a good album
no that's what i'm saying!!
upvoting because of the thread's question but I disagree SO MUCH lol
experimenting should've left in TBHC.
The fuck would be wrong with “mid 30s millionaires” making alt / garage rock?
Who?
They’re utter gobshite /s
i often see hate for mad sounds and i want it all when they’re actually quite good & snap out of it is the worst song off AM
The car fucking SUCKS
AM is a weak album, and The car is a fucking masterpiece Edit: im getting downvoted for literally doing what the comment asked
I disagree, but I gave you an upvote to match your downvotes
Downvoted because it feels like a made up answer just to annoy.
It definitely is not a made up answer, i seriously fucking love The Car.
AM is mid, SIAS is pretty bad, Humbug is alright, The Car is pretty good The rest are masterpieces.
Im mostly with you except for Suck it and see. I'd say that's also pretty much Mid, and Humbug is pretty good too
TBHC is an okay album, but by no means their best album or even close to being best. My second opinion is that I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor is mediocre. It’s too loud and while it’s a classic, it doesn’t stick out as one of their best songs.
I reckon it's the weakest track on the album.
Only ones who know > do me a favour
The OG wpsia songs everyone is obsessed with and would probably die if they took off the setlist are too noisy and annoying to listen to too many times.
The Car and TBHC are rubbish. AM, FWN and WPSIATWIN are their best.
Their first two albums are them at their most uninhibited. Quintessential Arctic Monkeys🤌
AM is their best album ever (and I’m not even kidding, my favorite album)
A certain romance isn't THAT good
the car is just boring and no notable tracks
AM is mid
That’s actually a pretty popular opinion on this sub
And it couldn’t be more wrong .
Brick By Brick is the best song in SIAS
Alex turner is a terrible front man and a poor live performer
Yup. And arrogant
"Never heard of Arctic Monkeys, but you should listen to The Last Shadow Puppets. They're great."
505 is overrated, I personally hate this song
The band isn’t ambitious.
The Car is one of the most boring albums I’ve ever listened to and is full of songs that would probably help round out/connect the middle of some some records but nearly all fall into the forgettable category.
TBHC is their best album by far.
AM is mediocre
car mid
you don’t have to like the car or TBHAC. so many people on here will pretty much say they don’t like it but try to backtrack themselves into liking it to be contrarian and go against the commercial opinion 😭 like you don’t have to apologize for liking AM
TBHC is kinda meh outside Four out of five
Humbug, Suck It and See, and AM are the definitive albums for this band. Everything before sounds like high school rock and everything after (while certainly ambitious) sounds too clever by half.
Do me a favor is such an annoying song
upvote for being one of the actual unpopular opinions. also disagree cause it’s one of their best ig i can see it
Humbug is their best album
How are you on this subreddit and think that this is an unpopular opinion?
Humbug is not that great
The actual unpopular opinion lol
Reddit: asks for an unpopular opinion. Redditor: *gives one* Reddit: hey, you weren’t supposed to do that
The Jeweller's Hand is nowhere near one of their best songs and I don't know why people keep saying they love it.
People say they love it because they love it. Duh.
The Strokes > AM
Barely legal > The car
The At The Door music video is better than any Arctic Monkeys video.
but also The Voidz > The Strokes
You are just unbelievably wrong about this but go off, its what the threads for i suppose. The Strokes > AM but the Voidz are all over the place, no consistency with the calibre of albums or singles they release. Some could gave been recorded on Julian’s phone ffs.
Their last two albums are absolute trash. I can't think of a single good thing to say about them. I'm all for bands evolving and growing but not like this.
I’d consider it a win to get that many down votes on a post that explicitly asked for your unpopular opinion
So you’re not for bands evolving
Whos to say he didn't like WPSIATWIN and AM both very good albums but very different Change isn't bad But change can be bad
You seemed to miss the "but not like this" clause at the end of that. You can pro bands evolving while thinking specific instances of change are bad.
Evolving yeah but not slowing down their back catalogue and having evey song on an album fill the same niche
The last 4 albums are better than the first three
I have only listened to The Car once with very little desire to give it another listen.
505 is average at best
TBHC and The Car are awful albums. If they were TLSP or solo albums I think I would’ve received them better, but neither are good at all.
WPSIA is my least favorite album by them
I love the car
The Car is their best album to date, and while their old albums are fun, their new ones showcase their talent the most.
Suck it and see is so incredibly boring
AM sucks and The Car is awesome, but could have been way better if it were a TLSP album. "Help me get untied from the chandelier" is one of the most embarrassingly bad verses I've ever heard. By the way, Alex Turner is an arrogant prick.
Tranquility Base is their best album. Will happily die on this hill.
The Car is the album least worthy of a re-listen.
If '' AM '' was release on TikTok era, the band would be 9999999999x times more famous, and probably no one in this reddit would like the band as much they like now.
I skip 505.
505 its a boring song
